I reckon The Kinks songs still sound fresh and are holding up very well. Their harmonies are very good and tunes were written by a very good songwriter in Ray Davies. Also, not forgetting brother Dave's songs. A vastly underrated group who will still probably be remembered far longer than some of today's so-called superstars!
His particular singing style rhe rotchy scratchy kind if voice made his voice really soft throughout the years and remember he was only 17 in the 2nd interview
THIS is why I tried to watch THE MIKE DOUGLASS SHOW whenever I could in the mid 60s to 1970. You could not see an interview with THE KINKS anywhere else in the U.S. with only 3 network TV stations back then. I saw this show!
Mike had EVERYBODY worth watching. Sherri Lewis...& the Standells? Wow. Barbara Feldon & the Electric Prunes?? WOW! Many. His list of guests were equal to none.
“Mike Douglas” was on every afternoon at 4pm in USA. it got such high ratings that it would get some very big music stars on it say plugging a new album. When John Lennon faced deportation he was on every day for a week in order to gain the American people to stand with him and not be deported.
Ray was better than most song writers. His lyrics remain relevant decades later. Not all lyrics from other British Invasion bands have fared as well as long.
I think that if the Kinks had had the producer and the manager of same talent as the Beatles had, Kinks would have been of the same caliber in music and fame as them
I think you make a good point regarding production & management. And being locked out of the U.S. for a few years hurt them. But, the Beatles had two really good songwriters and a good third one (who got better over time), while the Kinks really just had Ray. (I know Dave wrote a few and they were good, but he didn't even match George Harrison's production -- I am talking strictly quantity, not attempting to compare the two in terms of quality.)
They are really quite strange. There songs are devilishly good - and they're my favorite band regardless if I listen to them alot or not. Every Ray and Dave is a star I believe Crowley said that.
I know!!! Leno and Carson were giants. Leno was younger and hipper so I can see them both agreeing to do his show. I wonder how they would react to today's cretins of late nite tv.

Wow, I had no idea Dave's voice was so soft. Especially how rough and tumble he is, especially while singing
Dave has a very high sweet singing voice. Usually in the background singing high harmony. His speaking voice is *exactly* what one would expect.
@@Better_Call_Raul Say that again?

Dave's a soft and special little boy
I miss that band. They were great!!!
They may not be done
I♥️the kinks
That Billy Crystal kept his Humor when Dave pulled that stunt😂

This was actually from 77 so you must have continued to watch past 1970. The famous week that Lennon co hosted was 72 as well.
0:39 tbh I think that Ray was way better looking than Mick Jagger😂💙
Miss Music anyone is ❤️👍👍😂😂🤣
No comparison-- Ray is extremely attractive!!
Mick always look like Don Knotts to me, not eye candy 🙄
It was a joke!
So did, does, Ray. Hence the eye roll.

OMG! He's talking about sausages to Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicelo.
Good old Billy Crystal!
Mick Jagger said he thought Ray Davies was a much better song writer than he himself was
And it's true. But Mick is a better performer, a real powerhouse on stage
Ray was better than most song writers. His lyrics remain relevant decades later. Not all lyrics from other British Invasion bands have fared as well as long.
He was !
Pete Townsend said that too
God I miss the Kinks...
I love these guys and they are pretty close to get a new fan who already listens to ”old music”
Posiblemente el compositor contemporáneo mas inteligente y con mas ingenio de pop y rock. Enorme compositor y de las voces mas chulas del rock.
la voz de Dave es tan suaaaaveeee
Actually, ray and Dave both together is exactly my personality 😅
That poor interviewer in the first Dave clip didn’t know what to do with that information
I think that if the Kinks had had the producer and the manager of same talent as the Beatles had, Kinks would have been of the same caliber in music and fame as them
Maybe, at least around the size of the Beach Boys or something
Maybe that's their appeal, they're, "Not like Everbody Else!"
I personally preferred Kinks over Beatles in the pre-Revolver days. The British invasion was amazing, but there is no England now.

though tbf it's also a positive bemuse unlike those bands, they weren't americanised, and can focus on genres like music hall.
Wow ......it's well established The Kinks were indeed somewhat messed up.....like any artist should be.
"Normality" ...out the window.

Mike Douglas was 2nd rate, shoulda been on the Merv Griffin show that would have been "Mervolous"!
@@philt1771 Not really, anyone who was anyone went on Mike Douglas, that's for sure, plus think he pre-dated Merv, and Merv had that weird style..
Frankie Avalon had no business interviewing anyone. 🙄
