      @@isitwasit8756 --I DID NOT know David Bowie personally, & I know this stuff about him too. He put himself out there, & then ended up having all those attributes, & more. I did get to see him in an amazing concert once. SO, I will say:"ME, & David Bowie spent some time together once." OH, OH! 1 of my many nieces saw him, & his group in a club in South Africa once. She was there for 'Semester At Sea'. She was appalled when some dumb guy in her group went to his table, & interrupted BOWIE'S group. He gave this guy his autograph, & was very GRACIOUS about it. 1 of the biggest Rock Stars in the world W/ his wife, & friends! Meanwhile, WE have a bunch of self important Movie Stars, who would have punched the guys 'lights-out'. How's that for proving what "standenberg" said?!?

    For the memory of the great David Bowie I was at the same show in 1963 he mentions when I was sixteen which was at Hammersmith Odeon not Brixton and Mick and the boys opened the evening to a rare luke warm reception with their first release 'Come on'. Bo Diddley and the Duchess were there - fantastic - and a great performance by a young and wild Micky Most who played the guitar while rolling on his back. Gene Vincent also made a guest appearance hobbling on after a recent motorbike accident. Little Richard was amazing and danced on the piano ripping off his shirt into throwing it into the audience while singing seemingly unending choruses of a Whole Lot Of Shaking Going On. Absolutely wild performance. The whole audience were standing on those old cinema seats jumping up an down and screaming along - I remember the dust, smoke and sweaty atmosphere and that electric performance never to be forgotten. Rock and Roll!

    Bowie a true British rock 'STAR'.
    He refused an honor, even Jagger couldn't help stick his nose in the monarchy trough. But David had morals, he was worth what only his peers could give. Praise for his dynamic energy, inventing new characters, ground breaking, ability to see beyond the norm.
    British inventive brilliance.

      Keith Richards did the same as David Bowie. Keith said to Mick something about all those royalty types wanted to do was put us in jail as they looked down their noses at us all the while they were taxing them to death. Keith was pissed at Jagger for accepting his knighthood from the Royals.

      Well if Keith Richard's did refuse an honor good on him. What happened to being against the establishment, free speech, not accepting gold from the royal coffers? Living or dead John Lydon, Lemmy, The Proclaimers, Bowie, Keith Richards and Lennon will always be rebel's.

    I was a huge Bowie fan when he hit America. Listened to him constantly through 77 or so. He was in a bad way about the Diamond Dog time. Almost looked dead in interviews, then miraculously fixed himself in the 80's, 90's and beyond. It's a huge success story on another level coming back from drugs.

If that song was the favorite of anyone in the audience, he must have felt awfully teased and disappointed.

      I think it's hard to say he was the "mastermind" or even THE "architect" of R'n'R, as Chuck Berry and Elvis were releasing their first hits simultaneously with him. They are certainly the architectural triumvirate of the genre, head-and-shoulders above the others.
      And if we look closely at them, we'll see these release dates:
      ELVIS:
      --"That's All Right" in July-1954;
      --"Heartbreak Hotel" in Jan-1956;
      --"Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel" in July-1956;
      --"Too Much" in Jan-1957;
      --"All Shook Up" in March-1957 (all of them but the first one reaching #1).
      The first one never charted, and so the other two pioneers could be placed ahead of Elvis chronologically, but the song not too long after would grow in esteem and significance.
      CHUCK B.:
      --"Maybellene" in July-1955;
      --"Roll Over Beethoven" in May-1956;
      --"School Day" in Mar-1957;
      --"Rock and Roll Music" in Sept-1957;
      --"Sweet Little Sixteen" in Jan-1958;
      --"Johnny B. Goode" in Mar-1958 (all but the second one in the top ten, three of them in top five).
      Significantly, it was Chuck's unique sound and style of guitar that quickly became the signature sound of Rock and Roll, I would say.
      LITTLE RICHARD:
      --"Tutti Frutti" in Oct-1955;
      --"Long Tall Sally" in Mar-1956;
      --"Rip It Up" in June-1956;
      --"Lucille" in Feb-1957;
      --"Jenny, Jenny" in June-1957;
      --"Keep A-Knockin'" in Aug-1957;
      --"Good Golly, Miss Molly" in Jan-1958 (four of them in top ten).
