      @sweeze don't worry about speed if you're a beginner. The more you draw and paint and the better you become at the fundamentals the quicker you'll become also. However if you already have a good grasp of the fundamentals but you feel that you're still too slow then you should consider optimizing your work flow. A good way to do this is to see how other artists work and their full process (make note of what they do differently than you and why) and also take a look at how industry professionals draw when they have to meet tight deadlines.
      However remember that being more efficient does not mean being super fast. For some artists, their pieces will still take 10+ hours even if they're being super efficient. It depends on the complexity of your piece, your style and many other things. Instead of focusing on the hours focus on how smoothly you're making and executing decisions, that's what truly matters.

    "Every painting has an ugly phase" that really blew my mind! Despite watching countless speedpaints, etc, I never thought about that when it comes to my own work.
    I usually just give up with very simple cel-shading simply because I don't have much direction or not sure how to take my art to the next level. Thank you for these nuggets of wisdom, I've been in a rut with my art for the last few months and I think your video helped me figure out why I've felt like my work has "plateaued" in terms of quality.

    Having a tight sketch made me feel really restricted. I usually do a very, very loose sketch that lays out my proportions and plan. The painting is where I begin to render and define the shapes I created. I found that allowing myself to fix mistakes at any point was very freeing. I also noticed many professional artists I personally admire also did very loose sketches before going into their desired medium--ink, paint, etc. James Gurney has a whole video about painting and the correction vs chaos engine

    • @botousai
      @botousai 3 года назад +4

      100% agree. Most professional digital painters I see do very loose sketches and then start painting and "chisel out" there shapes, then add details.

    Lots of great points here! I will say that there is a capitalistic urge for constant improvement evident in this video. You can be proud of your work and enjoy your own work without constantly striving for something new and better. What is the point of making art for you? Is part of it enjoyment, self-care, meditation, etc? Well, that’s valid. You don’t always have to be hustling.

    I've been doing digital art for one and a half years, and I improved so much! Age doesn't matter because Im 12 and skill before you start doesn't either because I could barely draw anything right and I improved a lot. What I did is that I started a comic, it can be nonsense or have a storyline but it forces you to draw a lot of stuff you don't normally do and you start to draw faster if you are posting it somewhere.(but you don't have to) Like I really struggled with backgrounds especially ocean scenes and anatomy so I made a comic about mermaids underwater. I also struggled with drawing vehicles so I made another comic with the main character being a car. You should try it, you'll be surprised by the results even after a month! Hope this tip helps anyone reading this.

    With the fourth tip, I can assure y'all that it will be worth it even if you don't think you can do those or feeling lazy. And it is useful for both digital and traditional drawings. Recently, I drew my gf as the queen she is, so I wanted to give her a dress that gives off that gav eoff that vibe. She said she liked embroidery, at first I was like: "I'm so lazy to draw all those patterns" but I did it for her. When I was done with the patterns, holy shit guys, it was so worth it, it definitely looked better than me making a lazy embroidery. So try it! I swear it'll be worth it taking your time with details you want to give

    1. Start with a thumbnail sketch that has notes of what you want to do. (I already do this.)
    2. Have a good clean sketch before you begin painting. (Anatomy etc)
    3. Be purposeful with your choice of colors and think of the mood you want to convey.

    5. Paint consistently and learn from your bad paintings. Improve.

    Two tips I would give for any creative process as well and one that is actually kind of a counter point to part of this video. Is be proud of yourself. Don't beat yourself up bc you feel your work isn't perfect or as good as the reference or artist you look up to immediately. Perfection isn't achieved overnight and you won't start there. But whilst I agree to strive to improve with each piece dont constantly nitpick either. Make sure you highlight what you like about each piece you've done and find an aspect to be proud of. The other tip. Would be to enjoy yourself. If you aren't enjoying a certain style. Try a different one. Creativity should be fun and you will create much much better pieces if you are are passionate and like what you're doing. Don't force yourself through stuff you don't enjoy. Life has enough of that, let creativity be an escape

  • @savannahv6185

    Sara, I noticed you got kinda uncomfortable when you mentioned yourself after talking about artists that inspire us. When you went "not that I'm saying *huff*" I'll tell you right now that I look up to you as an artist so you don't ever have to hesitate again! You and your art inspire many of us that are subscribed and even people that stumble across your videos, so say that with certainty!

  • @hbczk
    @hbczk 3 года назад +2

    This video is full of really good points, but I felt that the part where you said "don't sit there being happy with where you're at" could be quite discouraging and toxic to those who are starting out and are insecure with their work. If you don't give yourself a pat on the back every once in a while, it's just a spiral of satisfaction because you'll never feel proud or content with the work you're doing.
    Striving to improve consistently is super important and commendable, but not allowing yourself to just sit back and think "wow this turned out badass" EVEN IF you can see bits that need improvement is like a one-way ticket to burnout.
    Keep up the great work:)

Years passed and now I am so thankful, I don't know how but somehow I start to draw again. I want to improve my drawing skills. I have a courage to look at my previous artworks and see on what parts that are needed to get improved. Now my hunger is expanding to get to know the world of painting too - doing it digitally. I’ve had friends tell me I am a fast learner when they try to teach me stuff despite my mind telling me it’s just for the sake of cheering me up, I am still learning. Yet, I still have a ton of insecurities and hesitations especially when I have surrounded myself with incredibly talented friends. It’s a headache, but I do hope to get there.

      @@bananasandmayo I haven't really progressed as much as I wanted to, since I've been really busy. But, recently I've picked up on practicing anatomy on traditonal art with pen and paper again starting with the hands before I go to hell with the studying the torso. I am graduating JHS, so my busy schedule is gonna eff me up somehow. I plan on taking Arts and Design track, and I am planning on practicing painting as well! My only worry is, I only have a poster paint and a brush. So, I might as well deal with it for now. I am planning on opening up commissions soon, if my art does get better. :>

    general suggestion for all draw/illustrate/paint artists: consistency across the whole piece. over developing one section can make a couple of problems: it can make you anxious about the rest of the piece and if you don't get around to clearing it up it looks like you abandoned that part of the piece. I like to think of my pieces like a heat map. every few minutes i think 'is this section getting too hot?' time to move. this will create a much more consistently developed piece.

    could you maybe make a video on how to stop your digital art from looking flat? (in terms of colour/shading/effects) i've been drawing for years and have no issue when drawing/painting traditionally but can't seem to get it to translate to my digital work for some reason. Also maybe on how you go about choosing your colours?

    I agree where you said that you should be able to draw well first to paint well. I pretty much drew since I was little (with traditional medium), and I wanted to be good in digital art when I was 14.
    Tried digital painting a few times, but never finished it because digital painting was so hard to me back then (I could only do some terrible line art). My mom even jokingly said maybe that’s not my thing. Didn’t do digital painting for almost 4 years ;)))
    Once I went to art school (18yrs old), I picked up digital painting one day. And this time I finished a highly rendered, cool-looking painting. To my surprise, it became so easy to me, as it wasn’t as hard as I used to think it is.
    Showed my mom and she was so shook. I think why I improved that much is because I watch a lot of tutorials and most importantly, I learnt a lot on how to draw better.
    Now I’m getting better and better these days;))) Digital painting is really something you can learn by yourself. Practice makes a lot of difference;))

    On point 2: usually I get around this by double-sketching. I have a really rough sketch that just kind of gets to the core of the layout, then I go over that with a more detailed but still rough sketch. It gives me the opportunity to fix any anatomy mistakes and do a bit more planning before I start with line art.

    I've been looking at your videos recently, I got a tablet the other day and was so frustrated that I was not as good as when I draw traditionally. I thought that with all those tools in digital painting I would be able to draw great things without any struggle, but actually I got overwhelmed by the amount of parameters you have to set up and all the brushes you can choose. Thank you for your tips it helped me a lot, especially the one about having a neat sketch. I was doing exactly what you said, since I didn't know what brush to use and couldn't find one that suits me, I just did a quick messy sketch and pray for the blending to fix it. I'll try to spend more time sketching the drawing and not start painting before I get a satisfying base. It's like learning to draw back from day one, even if it is kinda frustrating I'll take the time to upgrade my drawing without rushing and maybe one day I'll be able to paint such amazing pieces as yours.

    i have to say... it's not necessary to credit an artist for a color palette except as pure courtesy/to lead more eyes to the source of inspiration, unlike when copying an actual piece of art. color palettes aren't IP. like a good example is the zorn palette. it's helpful to see when artists cross ref and annotate these details, but there are hundreds of artists who use that color combo organically and don't need to credit zorn for that. the rest of your advice is lovely and this painting is lovely.

    Really interesting insights! I especially like what you said about the ‘ugly phase’ and pushing through :) Regarding your tip on always trying to one-up yourself: I see how that might induce growth, but when I tried to apply that mindset, I found that for me, it rather stunted ny growth. I felt it added pressure and fed into my already perfectionistic nature where I feel like I’m never doing good enough - like I was in a match with my past self and I always had to win that match. For me that was a losing game haha - I ended up avoiding making art. Also, somehow the emphasis I put on improving my technique made me opt for less interesting creative ideas. Good to hear what worked for you though!!

    • @basildraws
      @basildraws 3 года назад +15

      @@Nyitemare exactly. It’s less than no biggie, it’s not a thing. At all. Colours are colours. No one owns them. And a pleasing colour palette is bound to be stumbled upon many times by unconnected artists. Try painting a landscape without touching a dozen if the same greens and blues as every other landscape artist in history. Try painting a portrait without duplicating skin tones... and fabrics and hair colours and lip shades and and and. What a ridiculous concept that a palette requires credit. If so, then we best all credit Leonardo and Michelangelo an Rembrandt and Vincent and probably Ug and Grunt of the cave people too. Sheesh.

    5. Paint consistently (improve faster by working every week instead of every once a month)
