It's been a long time coming! I've been wanting a movie since it debuted in 2003. I'm 41, so I've been waiting half of my life for this! I'm so excited. :-)
It would be really smart for them to dive into more content from the book for the second half of the story! There’s a lot that happens there behind the scenes and it’s fully fleshed out.
Why didn't Dorothy just take the train? For the same reason she didn't just use her slippers to get home from the very start. It was the journey that was important. That's the lesson that Glinda was trying to teach her.
That sounds vaguely familiar! I haven’t seen the stage show in YEARS, *but* the tour is coming to my city this summer so i think I need to see it again…for research purposes…
My favorite part was seeing the silver shoes with the BLUE socks and seeing Nessarose in the corner. I think the clip with Fiyero and Elphaba (based on how she’s dressed) is from right after releasing the lion cub and perhaps the cub scratched him as it burst out of the cage. The only thing that worries me is making it far too dark and no longer safe for kids to see. The book is exceedingly dark and inappropriate and I heard they are going to use more from the book.
Oooh you’re right, it’s totally the lion cub scene!! Hmmm I wonder how dark they’ll be able to go….I would love to see it get a PG-13 rating. I’m thinking of finally reading the book this year to prep for the release, I want to see how much was actually retained for the musical!
The train is in the stage show. We see the steam of the train and the conductor shout "all aboard!" when Elphaba is saying goodbye to her friends before going to the Emerald City.
Amazing analysis on the teaser trailer! I’m SUPER excited to see Wicked movie this Thanksgiving!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 I never seen Wicked the Musical in person but fortunately I will definitely see the movie adaptation this year!!
I LOVE seeing the crew from the OG Wizard of Oz, something so nostalgic about it. Also, I believe that at the beginning with the tore up yellow bricks that Elphaba puts her hand on that you were commenting on at the beginning of the video, is probably after Glinda sends Dorothy on the way to Emerald City and it’s the aftermath of the tornado/Nessarose’s death
Regarding the Fiyero clip, I’m pretty sure that’s the releasing the Lion clip from right before I’m Not That Girl, and I have a theory that the Glinda wedding dress scene is Elphaba daydreaming during INTG. I also have theory that they are planning to make visions an actual aspect of Elphaba’s power, which isn’t even in the original book so it’s completely new for the movie, and that she is going to have at least two, if not three, visions in the first movie. That would also explain why we see Dorothy and the gang so early.
Also, regarding the issue with the age difference between Erivo and Grande, the book explains that Elphaba had to help raise Nessarose since her deformity is more severe, being that she was born with no arms. Elphaba was not able to attend Shiz until Nessa was old enough, and she really only went there to be Nessa’s attendant. Elphaba was at least an older toddler when her sister was born, thus she can easily be significantly older than Glinda. I have always seen her as roughly 3-5 years older.
Finally, regarding the split movies, John M Chu is on record that the reason for the split is because they could not justify removing any of the songs or scenes from the musical to meet the original runtime they were given. Instead, they are taking the opportunity to flesh out the second act/movie with storylines from the original book Wicked. As someone who is a big fan of the book, I am SUPER excited to see what they decide to include. The book kinda goes nuts in the first half, but in the second half it gives some really good context to the “Wizard of Oz” part of Elphaba’s overall story.
Oooh….I would love if they actually visualized her “vision almost like a prophecy” and kept it as an ongoing thing throughout the two films. Although I do kind of hope there’s an actual wedding scene, it would amp up the stakes in the Elphie/Fiyero relationship in (presumably) movie 2…similar to Disney’s Aida with Amneris finding out about the affair right before the wedding ceremony 😬🥺
@teacupforone You hold SO MUCH enthusiasm for the Wizard of Oz universe it is AMAZING! You remind me of my own feisty ZEST for Oz and Wicked altogether! I'm an Oz Extremist and Collector. I would give anything for you to DIVE into MANY Oz videos that I could watch. I am ADDICTED to the lives of L. FRANK Baum, Judy Garland, and the 1939 Oz Cast as well as Wicked, Stephen Schwartz, Gregory Maguire, Kristin Chenoweth & Idina Menzel. BTW, Glinda is ACTUALLY from the South (Quadling Country), NOT North. The 1939 movie combined 2 good Witches into 1 ❤
The book has so much y'all don't mention. I had never seen the play, but I read the book. It includes so much history about Oz and the other areas. Also, about her life when the play sounds like it started from her in college. It's a lot they can add to this movie that the play couldn't.
in the books Dorothy's slippers were silver... but the 1939 movie was one of the first big movies done in color and they opted to make the slippers ruby slippers...
💯! The ruby slippers have such a cool history, I have a whole video from a few years ago about the various known pairs in existence and the journeys they’ve been on…though I may need to do an update since the stolen pair was recently recovered!
I wish we would also keep in mind that although yes they are paying homage to Baums Oz they are doing that with the skeleton Gregory gave them! Maguire did his research when world building and creating. I doubt we would have those details like Munchkinland being the “corn basket” of oz if it weren’t for Maguires writings.
The train can still work when it comes to Dorothy. Remember GLINDA tells her to follow the yellow brick road so Dorothy can meet scarecrow/tinman/lion to teach her about wisdom, heart, and courage. If Glinda had said just get on a train, she wouldn't have learnt nothing about herself or the power she had all along within herself
Sorry, but if they don't start off with the Dragon growling and blowing steam in the opening, I'm slapping tf outta somebody!! 😂😂 but I see where you come from because Idina's hat is the first thing you see on stage back when the musical was new. So you made a good point with that!! 👀🪣🌊
💯 I think the hat is a great visual opener both onstage and onscreen. However, I am very interested to see if/how the incorporate the time dragon in the film!
@@TeacupForOne True! It would be a more dramatic opening! Also where you started talking about the Fiyero scene, I think that's that part where Cynthia is about to sing "I'm not that girl", because he had a spec of blood on his face which would've been from the lion cub scratching him.
Haha, valid point! I think it boils down to me not wanting to see Dorothy, and with the lion I could go either way. But I’m so curious as to how they’ll handle the “reveals” for the other two
Yes! So many things I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out in the movie, especially things that are pretty clunky on stage (due to obvious reasons) like the baby lion escaping.
I feel like a lot of you should really read the wicked series. There’s a LOT of missed context and things that you’ll wonder about in the musical that are either different or more fleshed out on the page.
I’m glad to see an Oz fan who is excited for this there’s some people who are saying it’s destroying the original story when it’s a retelling of it and the Gregory McGuire wrote the book research the old books heavily so he knew what he was doing when he wrote wicked and the musical is great on its own And it tackled really serious issues like racism scapegoating somebody and oppressive government, and what that could lead to it felt like it was expanding on the oz universe, not destroying 😑it and I probably would’ve read the rest of the series of not for wicked
Agreed, I’ve been amazed at the reactions from some Oz fans! It’s way too early to pass judgment on the film since we’ve only seen a minute of it, but the visuals on this alone should be enough to thrill any Oz lover!
I’ve seen so many discussions about the train over the past few days! The two popular opinions seem to be that it gets destroyed before Dorothy shows up and/or Glinda wanted Dorothy to take the long route so she could learn her lesson…Im personally hoping it gets destroyed because I don’t think Wicked’s Glinda is overly concerned with teaching Dorothy anything. At least, she has other things to worry about compared to the 1939 Glinda
Is the great and powerful Evanora & Theodora are the original wicked witches of the west and east and then came Elphaba who was not evil like the afore mentioned which was a prequel to the 1939 movie. This will be the movie for all the awards in 2025 and 2026. Especially the latter. The Movies are all intertwined and for me a new version of the 1939 classic needs to be rebooted. Cynthia looks stunning as Elphaba 💚💚💚💚💚💚, Ariana as Glinda is amazing too 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 and those silver shoes
I am SO interested to see how these movies perform at the Oscar’s…especially because the second film would, in theory, be the one to get the bigger awards as it closes out the story, similar to ‘Return of the King’. Buuuut I have a feeling part one will be the stronger film overall 🤔
*MATT'S MUSINGS:* What was YOUR favourite moment?!
Omg finally someone who is as obsessive about this movie as I am.
It's been a long time coming! I've been wanting a movie since it debuted in 2003. I'm 41, so I've been waiting half of my life for this! I'm so excited. :-)
I am so excited for it!!! It may become my whole personality for the next 9 months.
It would be really smart for them to dive into more content from the book for the second half of the story! There’s a lot that happens there behind the scenes and it’s fully fleshed out.
Oooh like what?? Actually no don’t tell me, I need to read the book and find out for myself!
Why didn't Dorothy just take the train? For the same reason she didn't just use her slippers to get home from the very start. It was the journey that was important. That's the lesson that Glinda was trying to teach her.
Everyone was asking why Dorothy would walk when there was a train, I think the explanation is super simple: the tornado damaged the train system 😂
I like this explanation!
The Fiyero scene is from when they Rescue the Lion Cub.
Ah yes that makes sense! 🦁
If I remember right, Elphaba and Glenda take the train to Oz in the show right before One Short Day. So excited for this movie.
That sounds vaguely familiar! I haven’t seen the stage show in YEARS, *but* the tour is coming to my city this summer so i think I need to see it again…for research purposes…
Don’t worry, I’m crying right along side you! Incredible interpretation of this trailer! Fantastic job! Still crying!
Thank you so much!!

That’s exactly what that it is I think! The line in the stage version had something to do with how he’s bleeding from a scratch.
Oooh you’re right, it’s totally the lion cub scene!!
Hmmm I wonder how dark they’ll be able to go….I would love to see it get a PG-13 rating. I’m thinking of finally reading the book this year to prep for the release, I want to see how much was actually retained for the musical!

Ooooh I vaguely remember this, it’s been years since I saw the stage show…I’m going to need a refresher before November!
Thank you for watching!! It’s an absolutely perfect “event movie” for thanksgiving this year, I’m so excited 🤩

Ooooh that’s possible! One way or another, I really hope we get to see a cool tornado scene!

This! All of this! Although my favorite moment was Glinda in the bubble. It is so iconic for me to see her in It!
Thanks Loren!!! I’m so excited to discuss the movie with you once it comes out!!!

True!
Wizard of Oz expansion at Epic Universe, yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.
I think the answer is just to see Wicked a bunch of times, and that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make 🫡

"We only see their backs". Well, unless they completely change the storyline, we would have to see at least 2 of them from the front :)
Haha, valid point! I think it boils down to me not wanting to see Dorothy, and with the lion I could go either way. But I’m so curious as to how they’ll handle the “reveals” for the other two

Kansas City is actually in Missouri :)
It is?!?! This is what I get for being a Canadian who doesn’t know anything about football 🤣
Don't worry most Americans don't know this either lol
3:15 😉that was adorable😊
Haha thank you!
Yes I totally agree that train is throwing me off, it harms Dorothy journey I’m assuming it gets destroyed it has to , to make sense

her name is pronounced Ari-ana not air-i-ana.
My apologies.
I am FLOORED by your passion for Oz! @teacupforone Just like me 🙂
Absolutely! I like to say Oz is my Middle Earth 😂
