As someone who hasn’t seen the musical but who read the book some time ago: it’s odd to me that there is a possible interpretation of Wicked that ISN’T political? I almost think of it as a game at this point, to see the discourse around Wicked with my perspective being only informed by the book.
Tbh I feel like the reason why The Wizard and Morrible particularly read as Democrats to me as opposed to Republicans or other standard fascists is their two-faced nature, the way they portray themselves to be against injustice and feign the inability to do anything about it while also actively holding up the oppressive systems and cracking down on resistance efforts.
But republicans do that , pretty insidious actually, like th ewizard did a purge on educxation which, yeah more republican. How are republicans not twofaced, like to the people that listen to them too busy to care, yeah republicans do sound good.
“Frankly I don’t know who this video is for.” Me, 30 seconds earlier, seeing this video pop on my home page with only 266 views: “At last! A video made precisely for me. The algorithm is growing stronger each day.”
Glinda is a moderate, whatever side of the aisle you see her on, Glinda is the reality of trying to maintain Civility in politics while in an extremist regime, even fascist society. Glinda is the epitome of those in politics who care more about maintaining civility in politics rather than the actual harm abused power causes. She's young, priviliged, understands how power is less about quality and more of a status of popularity, but she's also naive in thinking all conflicts can just be talked through, and that she can make a difference in an extremist-controlled regime by being "one of the good ones" in the room. In reality she just becomes a complicit part in tragedy and the very system itself.
Always thought Wicked was inherently political. Like, that was almost the whole point of it lol. Thought this was a really cool video, appreciated hearing your thoughts.
I think we are agreeing, but i cant be sure ( in today's world)....Elphiba is a leftist , Glenda is a centrist /liberal ( I don't see much difference in the two) The wizard is far right... anyone who can't see this has a very ignorant view of what the characters represent.
the musical's version of Glinda is more complex, because although she looks like she's a good person, she still chose her own self interest over what was truly right. Although I do get her perspective since there will never be a perfect system and she can't truly change anything, it's still disappointing
Glinda's heart is in the right place but she is co-opted by the status quo. But by the end of the musical, we are supposed to assume that she has genuinely changed through her friendship with Elphaba. I don't think the comparison between the Wizard and Joe Biden works. The Wizard is supposed to represent the right-wing. Oz is supposed to be an oppressive (maybe even fascist society). The musical was written after 9/11 and the Wizard was modeled on Bush Jr.
Hmm, I would love to learn more about your perspective! My Interpretation of OZ I think stems more from the original with Dorothy and I do look at from a dream perspective. Oz is the only other human than Dorothy that arrived to OZ. And Kansas was in gray scale for a reason, I believe humans are morally gray and everybody has good and bad in them. When Oz lands in the city is he is treated like a legend by the people. He became a symbol that he could never live up to, similar to all the celebrities and politicians. He knows he can’t grant the citizens their hearts desire but continues to give symbols to them for them to step in their own power. Which his integrity is compromised on trying to get them on this journey . Dorothy had to go on the journey herself to heal her CPTSD and want to return home for the right reasons. In my opinion Oz and Glinda genuinely wanted Dorothy to succeed. However, in Wicked Elphaba rebels and becomes an anti-hero lacking in her healing process and is ultimately destroyed by guilt and shame. She also completely hurt everyone that was close to her. You can argue she didn’t accomplish anything but she had good intentions. Also, the message in wizard of oz is if I only had a brain, heart, nerve is symbolic to the CBT triangle or the trinity in Christianity. Thoughts, feelings and actions and how they all need to be balanced for inner healing. Arguably the OZ does good but showing people they had everything they needed in the first place. Mortals long for immortal longings and Oz was the hope for people to keep going on their journey. Everybody is morally gray to me in the story which I think is beautiful. “Imagine what we can do together” However, if I just saw wicked and didn’t see the wizard of Oz I would see OZ as more sinister.
It's the most obvious interpretation of the story, but I'm glad someone is talking about it. Hope this video gets more views. It's well-edited. Reminds me of that scene in "Better Call Saul" where the judge tells Kim to stick with her high-paying job and just donate to charities, even though it becomes very clear later why she can't do that. I think you should make that video responding to the conservative think piece. I would watch it.
Also, hello! I just stumbled across this and found your take fascinating. That ending was perfection, and I look forward to checking out the rest of your channel :)
honestly my take is that voting doesnt take that much time anyway so voting for the least bad option is pretty non intrusive and you can attempt to invoke change from outside the system too. And the consequence for voting for someone that is going to do less bad things than the other person who will do the same bad things plus even more bad things is too big to have personal ethics and high minded idealism into it.
The purpose of "reading" a work through a different lens is not to definitively say "this is exactly a 1:1 analogy in these ways." I am offering my opinion on how the work can be viewed through the specific lens that I define throughout the video. There's nothing to say you couldn't read it any other way, such as the one you described. Consider, for instance, the fact that literary scholars have done analysis of Shakespeare through a Marxist lens. Shakespeare never had any knowledge of Marx because he died 200 years before Marx's birth. And yet, there is something so fundamentally human about a lot of art that properties of a newer work can be applied to older ones. Know that we study art and literature because stories are valuable outside their immediate context!
@@xsepphie It really doesn't matter. You're free to think what you believe but it's ironic because the Nov elections take place the first week of Nov and the American public would only have access to the woke propaganda on Thanksgiving when it's too late to change their minds 🤷🏻♂️
There is no way that Glinda is a liberal on any level, because she spends the second half of the play cozying up to FASCISTS. Equating Joe and Kamala with the Wizard and Madame Morrible is utterly absurd
It's you people who don't understand the liberals have long move to the right that are absurd lol. The democrat party is as right as it can be in this time of age and y‘all are perfect examples of Glindas. You think you're the good guy and call yourself "the left" while supporting fascists wearing the good guy facade (Biden) as you betray actual leftists. The lack of self awareness and self reflection from libs is astounding, especially when the video has spelled it out for you like this

@Soulofan_Angel this is exactly my understanding. You can even make a point to trump having no magic at all and just being dare I say a showman.
Hilarious because in the novel Glinda is very much a republican. And extremely elitist and very racist
To be fair, a lot of leftists draw basically no distinction between liberals and republicans.

That makes Elphaba MAGA. Demonized for no reason and wanting things to go back to the way they were before 😂
