Yeah when Barbie came out lots of people thought they were heavy-handed with the messaging. But I think that's necessary for a general audience. Most people aren't as progressive as we'd like to think. For lots of people this might be the first time in a long time that they're being made to think about the issues faced by marginalized folk
I disagree, that’s sort of patronizing. Treating audiences as if they can’t understand complexity causes them to expect less, to challenge themselves less. Then the entertainment industry comes out with more and more simplified narratives to meet the audience. Given today’s trend of dismissing anything left of center-right as radical, a simplified centrist narrative that discrimination-is-bad can be easily slotted into the “radical” label and scorned. For people to “understand the issues facing marginalized folk” through storytelling, they need to feel that they have something in common with the character(s) representing marginalized people in a given story. This point of relatability should be based in *vulnerability.* That’s where the Barbie movie fails. Certain key characters are not written with proper emotional depth and a chance for the audience to feel their vulnerability. The movie doesn’t do the work to convey its message, so the supposed message has to be spoken at the audience. A movie like Parasite doesn’t require one of the poor characters to stare into the camera and say, “look at these conditions! Being poor is very hard and causes people to do bad things.”
@@Kam_i_unfortunately comparing Barbie to parasite is apples and oranges. I loved both movies for different reasons but one is a major Hollywood studio with a multimillion dollar production budget and who knows how much spent on marketing. I agree with everything you’re saying though, the gen audience shouldn’t be spoon fed or hand held but I fear the gen audience are not the same people flocking to see parasite. Most people don’t want to critically think let alone are capable of it. Barbie did so well because it’s an easy sell and I bet a lot of people who walked into the theater didn’t go in expecting a movie with heavy feminist themes/messages. There were kids/families at my showing lol. I think Barbie has a lot of pitfalls but I honestly didn’t expect anything crazy from a movie of that stature and that’s simply the reality of the industry rn
My best take on glindas last decision is that could be about survival , wether that's like the interview strength in realising your best path or realising your not capable of the other path and communicating it to not suffer through it , glinda says don't be scared to elphaba because I think she is also scared but this isn't elphabas first time it's just on a bigger scale she knows she should just leave. Glinda has a chance to go back to school and live whatever plan she had for herself , she wasn't supposed to be there, I think she's hoping to go back to normal.
Hey Divya! I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your visuals in all your videos. Even when they are not design-center topics you always choose/create really great graphics to go along with the video.
i have not much to add to the conversation cause good vid. but the marketing department sure held space for defying gravity as i saw "the illustrated lyrics of defying gravity" being sold in the shops for $19.

i love the internet nitpicking every little thing about the promo and trying to make wicked into SUCH a controversial thing because it’s just really not😭 omg crying during interviews!! how terrible!
no fr, this literally happens all the time with literally everything so i'm not surprised. people are bored with their ordinary and basic lives so they have to go out of their way to nitpick every little thing to feel whole/feel a sense of purpose ig?
Yup 100%. The internet really cannot stand watching a group of coming together to share their love for a passion project that they’re a part of…. Cynthia cried during an interview? Such a drag. Ariana was being overtly nice to the interviewers? Pretentious! We really cannot stand non polished, sensitive human emotions and expression on these platforms atp.
about glinda leaving with elphaba, to me, it looks like glinda was about to do it but she got caught by the people and she couldn’t break free from that. it’s an allegory for wanting to take a stand and being compassionate but not wanting to sacrifice what you’ve worked for and your comforts. it also shows in act 2, that she’s just an ally behind the scenes.
Completely unrelated but I love your hair did you dye it yourself? I would love to know the colour it's actually stunning I couldn't stop staring at it throughout the video!
11:50 Now I'm wondering if the production team also wanted to replicate the effects of using film cuz someone mentioned that they filmed digitally, which explains the constant usage of lightings/back-lighting and color grading to make the movie seem more natural and whimsical, but if you noticed from older movies (look how vibrant the original Wizard of Oz film was) using film, they actually don't loose their colors and are just as vibrant as digital captures now. 🎬🎥 In this movie however, because they kinda applied the effects like a filter all over the videography (alike batch editing photographies), most of the scenes looked really washed out and unnecessarily muted (cuz not all of the scenes fit this filter so they def need some tweaking and pre-editing) that tbh I'd argue would be against what they were going 12:12 reality color grading, as in actuality our rl world are very much colourful, so much so that we even invented color television to bring it on screen in the first place 😆📺🎞 Just because we feel sad/depress or may have other negative feelings doesn't make colors in eveyday objects go away and in fact we can't escape colours in reality no matter the reasons 🌈🤓 but of course in media we can edit the recordings so I'd agree their reasoning is probably BS 12:23 🤣
Divyaaaa, needed this vid!! Loved your detailed analysis of Wicked - one of my fave vids youve done - love the visuals!! Also you plug the best sponsors - Kittl im cominggg!
This movie is tragic and to market it as a fun family activity is nuts. All marketing buit around how wonderful main actresses are and their friendship instead of the main effing message of the movie. Ari's take on glinda is just omg
@@gokuvegeta1167then you shouldn’t have watched the movie??? The color purple movie is based on the musical and not the book but ofc people like you went to see the movie and were disappointed when it didn’t meet their expectations
After watching this film. This movie was a bland Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and Harry Potter rolled into one stretched out film. People complaining about the "wokeness" aren't exactly wrong. It is one thing to discuss inclusion, but then eliminate all the little people from munchkin land, and cast them in roles for the background carney dancers or voice over for animals. However this did make very deliberate nods to LGBTQIA crowd repeatedly. Its like Oz is this magical place that has every rainbow spectrum of people, so we must just insert them all in the same frames. It does nothing for the story.. but we just roll with it. The story itself has some minor conflict, however very little resolution... other than the odd drawn out silent dance and then poof she's accepted... there is little to no conflict resolution.
Great analysis, thank you! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
I feel like the whole behind the scene mess is fitting since the Wizard of Oz itself is known to had an almost deadly production
The books are literally just straight politics I'm being so serious when i say that, so alleging that the movie was too political is absolutely WILD ✨
did you guys remember to hold space for defying gravity

Don't over analyse else you get into the unnecessary mess.
The movie is just a watered down version on the book hashtag not my wicked the book is way superior than that trash movie
You know it’s not supposed to be representative of the book but rather the updated script adaptation of the musical itself right?
