One must check the portfolio of the small cap fund because if a small cap stock commands higher holdings in a small cap funds portfolio the concentration risk goes up. SIP is a very good way to approach equities to get the right asset allocation in one's portfolio. If stock markets are falling it presents opportunities to get quality stocks at lower prices which must not be missed. If one has extra money to invest then they can even invest a lump sum amount. Over the long term growth and value investment styles give similar returns. Value Funds can be a part of a mutual fund investor's core portfolio. If a large cap fund has picked quality mid cap and small cap stocks at the right valuations then chances are the fund may perform well.
