I don't mean this as condescending to Blacks, but they do seem to have generally better singing voices, and I wonder why today's Black kids are making rap, instead of using their natural abilities, more? Have another soul wave.
(You've Got) The Magic Touch, One In a Million, I'm Sorry, You'll Never Never Know, The Great Pretender, I Love You 1000 Times, My Prayer, Enchanted, Twilight Time and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. One of the all time great smooth groups. What a great voice of lead singer Tony Williams. RIP
Tony William’s voice was a gift from God and we were lucky that he shared it with us. I was in high school in the 50s and absolutely loved The Platters. May they be Resting In Peace! 🙏
Whenever the Platters came on the radio we all stop and listened! Tony Williams was one of those great lead singers and we all knew it was him when we heard him. Great Group! Can the popular music of today even come close to this talent?
Nice. My parents loved the Platters so I got to listen to them as I grew up. Now I am 60 and they still delight me. Glad to see a young man enjoy and appreciate them.
The Platters were incredible in the 1950s. Glad you are learning that there were plenty of black singers and performers before 1980s. Happy music traveling.
This was a TRUE "blast from the past." One of the most classic, beautiful songs ever recorded! I haven't thought of the Platters in so long. It was GREAT to hear this again. (I had no idea the song was as old as it is. I thought it was recorded in the 60's. But I wouldn't be born until a year after this came out. Wow!) Their music was on the radio a lot through the 60's, as I recall, but I don't think I heard anything about them, too much, after that. What a shame. They were SO talented! Loved your reaction!
What voices, so smooth, harmony's fantastic, wonderful wonderful music , even a bit before my time , loved them , also smoke gets in your eyes , the great pretender , once never forgotten 🤩.
Take a look for the movie, "American Graffiti"....this was one of the amazing songs in the movie plus you got to see how people lived back then and how this music fit into their everyday life. Enjoyed this reaction, Jay.... it was fun. Take care and be well. Peace.
Tyrone Tucker I watched American Graffiti with my son about 15-20 years ago. He was a teenager then, and he loved it. His fave movies to this day are AG and Blues Brothers. I’m one proud mumma! Hehe
The BEST group ever. They’re my absolute favorite. That’s when music was made by people with phenomenal voices, no auto tune or anything. Please do Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
One of the best groups there ever was!!! I could listen to Tony William’s voice over and over and over again. In fact, I have! 👍🏻👏🏻🌟🎤🥰‼️ “The Great Pretender” is a marvelous song by them.
They sound way too perfect because they are. Do listen to more Platters. This is the best slow dance with your bestie EVER ❤️❤️🌻🌻 So glad you liked them, loved them. You’re so cool!
You should definitely do I Only Have Eyes For You by The Flamingo's. Probably one of the most hauntingly beautiful and ethereal love songs of all time imo
Thank you JayveeTV, This was my hubby's and my song. We saw the Platters twice, once before we were married 51 years ago. And the second time for our 30th anniversary. He passed away this February, but this will always be our song. You put a smile on my heart. You may also try "Enchanted" The Platters.
@Jean Miehm So sorry for your loss. You were so lucky to get to see them twice and also to have one of the most a beautiful love songs EVER written to remember your husband by. I'm sure you made so many wonderful memories in a marriage that lasted over 5 decades together. That sure is a lot of love to cherish, and I'm sure he was one in a million. ❤
Wow ! You really went back on this one! The Platters were Black royalty, along with the Ink Spots and the Flamingos back in the '50's and had unparallelled crossover success which, undoubtedly inspired Berry Gordy to strive for the same with his Motown artists! The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four number-one hits. The Platters are one of the first African-American groups to be accepted as a major chart group and are one of the most successful vocal groups in the world! As you said Tony Williams' voice was clear and operatic and you must also experience their "My Prayer", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Washed Ashore."
I have been into music and collecting records early on 1949 to date it makes me so glad that people enjoy the music of past era's and realize what we enjoyed !! music is a passion for me , stroke has made it the only thing that I'm really enjoy enables me to move my arms and legs and try to dance
The Platters were incredible! This clip is from one of those 1950's movies where they had a little bit of plot and a lot of popular musical acts' performances strung together. I think the featured artist in this movie was Bill Haley and The Comets (Rock Around The Clock).
They were on at the club I went to Madi Gras Liverpool in 68 .Small stage with DJ playing music and local band singing soul in front of dance floor ,then they did 2 sessions after 1st session they came over to corner where we stood drinking beer with us .They were brill ,wish we'd have had cell phone for selfie ah well
@jayveetv Hi J, I spent so many hours listening to Doo-Wop with my Dad. This song was one of his/our favorites and it brings tears to my eyes. My beautiful Dad will be gone 3 years this August. I miss him terribly. Hearing this music is comforting. Glad you enjoyed it! God bless.
This video was pulled from a movie, I can't remember the name of it but the guy who introduces them is Alan Freed. His is famous for his early rock and roll shows. He was a DJ, and is credited with coming up with the term "Rock and Roll". Yes...their music is incredible. "Perfect" is a good word to describe the harmonies and the way the lead carries the song along...perfectly.
The Platters were one of my Dad’s favorite groups. He would play their records and got me to love them as much as my parents did. They have a truly classic sound.
Great reaction! I was born on 1970, but the music I listened to on the radio was music from the 1950's and 1960's. The Platters, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and sooo many more. This was singing at its best. Just pure voices and beats that were simple yet memorable. Enjoy this ride because these are the legends of music!
Tony Williams had a beautiful tenor voice. Very unique and special and clean. That “uh-oh” became the hallmark of his songs! Every young person and teenager bought their records! They are all brothers, sister and cousins. I had the great opportunity to meet them when I was about 7. Sadly, Tony committed suicide in his 30’s.
You found the Platters, YAY! Garsh, I'm old. Actually I consider myself lucky. I remember hearing the Platters, Nat King Cole, etc. I used to hear big band music and swing; Count Basie, Benny Goodman, etc. even though my teen years were late 60s and 70s, Beatles and stuff. But, there's a 20 year span between myself and my oldest sibling, so I got to hear their music and loved to watch them dance the boogie woogie in the living room
I was 2b in 1955 and remember this playing on the radio, Mum loved the Platters and I do too. The lead singers voice is wonderful, so controlled and emotional plus you can hear every word so clearly. Your reactions are so lovely to watch Jayvee and they looked like they blew you away. Peace and love to you all, God bless you Mary-Ellen UK
Yes! Now reaching into real early history of great music. The guy that introed them is the great DJ Alan Freed who played this great music against the acceptance of the radio stations of that time. He gave black singers an open chance to show off their greatness against the grain. He died young also.
I use to play this record on what my Mom called the stereo. It was one of her favs. Also smoke gets in my eyes. Thanks for the memories. I wish I could listen to this again with my Sweet Moma.
❤️. Beautiful. I grew up hearing the Platters. They were from mum and dad’s record collection. I know all the songs and all the lyrics. This reminds me of mum and dad, it made my heart smile. One of my favourites is ‘when You return’. ❤️❤️❤️
This is a classic. Another great Platters song: Smoke gets in your eyes.
Yes Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is a masterpiece
It must be next. Such a great song.
My Prayer is excellent!!
Love that song. It was used in a movie too.
And "The Great Pretender"
And now you have to listen to The Great Pretender. My favorite of their songs.
Yessssss💯💞💯👏👏👏
Tony Williams was one of the best lead singers I’ve ever heard. They sing like that because it’s called talent something that you don’t hear anymore.
The Platters killed it, don’t make music no where near this today.
I don't mean this as condescending to Blacks, but they do seem to have generally better singing voices, and I wonder why today's Black kids are making rap, instead of using their natural abilities, more? Have another soul wave.
@@kentclark6420 agreeable
@@kentclark6420 why is it condescending to say they have better singers. I agree they have better singers for the most part. It’s a compliment
Not even close , 💕
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is Platters masterpiece
Listen to Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, a classic. I was 3 years old in 1955.
RIP
I was 3 also Debbie. I heard these beautiful songs probably because my sister was 10 years older and just hitting her teenage years.
That was 20 years before I was born. Yet it’s one of my all time favorite songs.
I was 3 in 55 also. I guess your mom must have like Debbie Reynolds too. My class was full of Debbies!
@@user-jn6bi7mn4m great

They WERE absolutely amazing! This was first recorded in 1954 and released in 1955. Why can't today's music be like them?
No such thing as Romance these days...
Nice. My parents loved the Platters so I got to listen to them as I grew up. Now I am 60 and they still delight me. Glad to see a young man enjoy and appreciate them.

This group was doubly blessed with a great lead singer (Tony Williams) and manager ( Buck Ram) who also wrote songs. (Only you-The great pretender)
"Man, this is just way too perfect." These groups were awesomely talented.
Jayvee- I'm 78 and had the great fortune to live thru all that fantastic music ! All others, not my age-you missed so much !!!
