Michael knew that he stood on the shoulders of Jackie Wilson!! Michael always honored whose shoulders he stood on. That's why he covered all of Jackie Wilson's Medical Bills after he suffered his stroke, that's why he paid for David Ruffin's Funeral, and it's why the first thing he did after buying the Beatles catalog was give Little Richard the rights back to his own music that had been swindled from him decades earlier! He was the epitome of homoring those who paved the road you walk on. And Jackie was most definitely one of them!
Along with Roy Orbison the most distinctive and far ranging male voices in pop music. Also you got the dance moves from Jackie when he performed. Fabulous.
Yeah... that's messed up...no way that man with that gift shoulda wound up having to wait for a headstone because of being ripped off all those years by greedy individuals who instead of royalties he earned payed him with Cadillacs and silk suits
Before the Jackson 5 was signed to Motown they used to play in a lot of clubs where Jackie Wilson was also performing. A very young Michael Jackson used to stand in the wings and watch every move he made.
@@lynnejamieson2063 Totally! I've heard the story. Seen it, actually. I'm not from the UK, I would have never known who Jockey Wilson was, and I would have been in 1st grade when it came out, but RUclips has a few year-specific Top of the Pops specials, and one of them told a bit about the backstory there. It's a shame that the little funny stunt may have stalled their chart success by getting them a BBC ban.
M. Roy Clark I don’t think there was a BBC ban and it was a top 5 hit in the U.K. so it was pretty successful. I was only 7 at the time, so it wouldn’t really have registered on my radar (at the time Elvis and The Beatles would have been the only music I actively listened to) but having a brother who is 7 years older than me, I probably did see the episode of Top of the Pops when it aired. I do remember seeing it on ‘The Young Ones’ though, which was another BBC show (this one a comedy)
@@breckrichardson390 Actually, Michael learned 'The Backslide' which became known as 'The Moonwalk' from Soul Train dancer and Shalamar group member Jeffrey Daniel. He also later did some choreography for other Michael Jackson projects.
@beesee Will At the Grammys in 1983 (I think) when MJ won 8 awards for Thriller (& the ET storybook), he acknowledged Jackie Wilson in one of his acceptance speeches.
Such a gorgeous voice. I have loved Jackie since I was little, I had such a crush! Such a handsome guy! So smooth.....and sexy. This song was a late 50's song.
Yay!! Finally some Jackie Wilson! This cat had a 4-octave range! And he’s got the moves, too, as you can see! This song was originally released in 1958. Check out “Higher and Higher” next, releases in 1967!
It is so about time. Jackie was the IMO, the greatest vocalist of the rock and roll era. He could sing just about anything: rock, R&B, pop, light opera or gospel. Everyone stole what they could his stage act from James Brown to Michael Jackson. He was the first to do intricate things with the microphone stand. Listen to him doing "To Be Loved", "She's Alright", "Doggin' Around", "Baby Workout", and "That Is Why". Also his version of "Danny Boy" is really special.
Hello Jayvee. I could tell your reaction was very sincere , and it's a good thing you were wearing high quality headphones to best appreciate Jackie Wilson's voice . And you should know that no video exists that shows what Jackie Wilson was capable of.....most videos merely show 25% of the true reality . In any case try listening to Jackie Wilson's original recordings of "I JUST CAN'T HELP IT" and "PLEASE TELL ME WHY" and "MY TALE OF WOE" and "ASK" for the real deal from JACKIE WILSON. And also check out the "Live" video performance of "FOREVER AND A DAY" by JACKIE WILSON on the "ED SULLIVAN SHOW" . And my compliments to you Jayvee for your genuine appreciation of the most talented and gifted rock and roll and rhythm blues recording artist that ever lived.....JACKIE WILSON. Sincerely Mike Vallen.
This was one of the first 45 RPM records I bought in 1959. I started my music obsession when I was just 7 years old. Such a great song and singer. He left us way too soon at the age of 50.
Jackie Wilson was so unique in his vocals. I remember my Mom playing this 45 record every day. She was mad that she couldn’t dance like him!! I liked “Higher and higher” as referenced in the Commodores song. Thanks for playing it.
Higher and Higher is great. Some of his other good songs are: That Why (I Love You So), Doggin' Around, I'll Be Satisfied, Baby Workout, Night, To Be Loved, along with Reet Petite. In my book, Jackie Wilson is one of the greats!! Beautiful Soulful voice!!
Live performance. One of my favorites in my early teens. Most videos of this nature were live on TV. So talented. No auto tune just God given talent. Loved to hear Marvin Gaye too.
Jackie Wilson was a contemporary of Sam Cooke. They toured together on many occasions, each time there was an internal competition about who would close the show. I consider Jackie the "hard sell" and Sam the "soft sell." Both were terrific in their own way. I would suggest "Stop Doggin' Me Around," "Baby Workout" (personal favorite and highly recommended), "No Pity In The Naked City" and "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher." You can't go wrong with any of these.
James Brown! I always think of his early 1960's version of "Think" - and how Led Zeppelin lifted the horn riff of that one to become the guitar riff for their "Bring It On Home". James Brown then came out with a new version of "Think" that showed he didn't even need the horn riff to make it a great song! Anything by James Brown is THAT good!
OMG - This is my FAVORITE SONG by Him!!!! Thank you, thank you!!!❤ This is from the 60's!!! Sounds sooo good!!! Great entertainer he was!!! He died young, he was on stage when he fell ill and never recovered😥!!! Loved your reaction, as always! Your energy is the best!!!
No matter what anyone says, the best Jackie Wilson song for me is: "To Be Loved," I will watch the movie Coming To America, just to hear a part of it and Eddie Murphy tries to sing it!! Please, please listen to this one. BTW, Jackie Wilson had a four octave vocal range!
Unbelievable voice and entertainer for me, for that time ` he`s number #1 ! He influenced so many people` Michael Jackson Elvis , Van morrison ! many others ! Mr Entertainment is his moniker !
He's one of my favorite vintage artists. He actually had a really sad life from some research I've done. 😔 But this is my favorite performance of his! 😊✨
When I was a kid listened almost exclusively to music from the 50's and the 60's and I LOVED this song! Jackie Wilson is one of the all time greats. Everyone should hear him.
One of my favorites is Alone At Last....I have all his recordings on vinyl. Michael Jackson dedicated one of his albums to Jackie...it was this iconic performer that influenced Michaels dance moves and he taught himself to Moonwalk by watching iconic Bill Bailey because he invented the moonwalk and was always his exit off stage after every performance.
He was a favorite of mine for years, ever since I heard and saw him for the first time when in my early teens. He's the total package: an astounding voice, good looks, personality., stage presence, etc. However, there is another like him: his son, Bobby, who performed impressions of him, not realizing he was his son (he now knows). Although there can never be another like him, his son does a believable imitation. He inherited his father's talent.
Jackie Wilson was SMOOOOOTH! I remember that incredible voice coming from my parents' stereo when I was a toddler in the 50's! Dude had the moves, too! Love the "Nicholas Brothers'" drop to the knees and then rising back up with no hands. This brotha was the epitome of COOL. RIP JW!

Besides having an awesome soulful voice and knowing just how to use it, Jackie was a sensational live performer. As soon as I perfect my time machine, he's near the top of my list of people I would love to have seen live.

Jacki Wilson's Danny Boy...high range!!!

Michael Jackson, Prince & even James Brown owes everything to Jackie Wilson. That man had moves and major swag

1959. What an era in music. Unfortunately we don't get music like this anymore.
Jackie Wilson had so many hits "Reet petite", "Higher and higher" and "I get the sweetest feeling" are three of my favourites.

Oooooh Reet Petite is awesome! Also recommend That's why I love you so and You're love Keeps Lifting me Higher
Absolutely, these song are a must when listening to Jackie.
You left the fire burning - fantastic tune
Mr. Excitment. Elvis was a big fan and friend and helped with his medical bills when he got ill. "Higher and Higher" is a big classic of his.
