  • I’m about to shatter your childhood illusions. You know those creamy pumpkin pies you chow down into each Thanksgiving? Well, it turns out there’s no real “pumpkin” in them in at all.ruclips.net/user/edit?video_id...
    Recently, I was researching the best pumpkin varieties for eating when I decided to look into Libby’s pumpkin purée. It has great flavor and is what most people use to make pumpkin pie. What variety is it that they use though? I was more than a little surprised to find out that it’s actually a squash.
    The Dickinson Select squash more closely resembles a butternut squash than a traditional pumpkin. It’s a trademarked variety so you can’t buy seeds to grow it yourself. That got me to thinking though - what would a pie made with butternut squash taste like? It turns out that it tastes exactly like a delicious pumpkin pie.
    Here's my recipe: lovelygreens.com/2017/10/pump...

    Mennonites in Central Pennsylvania make their pies using squash. Looks a tad different but it's on another level of pumpkin pie. It's phenomenal

    I’ve been making them from scratch with butternut and I think they taste better than with the little sugar pie pumpkins.

      It actually makes sense to use them -- butternuts are known for being sweeter and more even in texture. I still can't get over it though. Pumpin pie out of squash lol

    Well pumpkins are a type of squash so it's all the same thing really. If you grow pumpkins next to squash, they can cross pollinate and produce hybrids because they're so closely related.

    My mother grew her own garden and years ago started doing this but mixing half pumpkin and half Butternut Squash. Delicious! Because it's just my husband and myself I don't make pies, it's just too much to eat. I make a pumpkin butter with Port Wine for year round eating and Christmas gift giving.

      Melt your butter before adding it. I use crushed ginger snap cookies to soak up the pie filling and it's amazing. I don't use can for anything homemade. Try it with the ginger snap cookies. Your family will love it. I promise😉🙌😂

      Don't forget your pumpkin spice and cover the edges after 20 minutes. You might eat the pie by yourself.😂

    in australia we call them butternut pumpkin but we also don't eat a lot of pumpkin pie. its not a surprise though as butternut pumpkin/squash is quite a bit sweeter than the other pumpkins they sell, here at least.

      Lovely Greens • Garden Living & Making not really as they're the same family as pumpkin, but i can't figure out why they're called a squash when the flesh is firm like a pumpkin, theyre the size of a small pumpkin and they seem totally different to say scollap squash which are small and very soft even before cooking. i don't supose you are able to help me understand the difference? language can be a funny thing between countries. please don't think I'm being stuck up, this might sound that way but i do love to learn about languages and hear the difference between what different countries call different fuit, veggies and herbs,

      Bernadette Garcia , I might be able to help. "Summer" squash is often immature, and softer fleshed than "winter" squash, which keeps better. Often they are from the same plant, but sometimes the winter squash is a differnt species or variety.

  • @kirstenwhitworth8079
    @kirstenwhitworth8079 5 лет назад

    In the South (USA), many pies are also made with sweet potatoes and yams - they are often mistaken for "pumpkin" pie.

    My uncle worked in a Libby's factory in Illinois, and they used butternut squash for their "pumpkin" pie mix.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 года назад +1

      Pretty much! The 'pumpkin' that Libby's uses is called the Dickinson Select, and it's a trademarked variety. It looks a lot like a bloated butternut squash and has the same flesh density and color.

      @@Lovelygreens when looking up Libby's pumpkin pie mix on their website they show a top of the squash, but nothing else. They don't want to give up the secret to the general public. Lol

    Spice it up with steamed yams/Kabocha squash!! Should probably add more egg or flour or both for stabilizer (yams are v moist)
