Gotta love how they had a plan going in the making of New Vegas. Ulysses was mentioned early in Primm and throughout the dlc’s.
Most of the major characters and ideas from the DLCs were originally developed for Van Buren. That allowed Obsidian, which was helmed by people who had worked on Van Buren, to approach the game with a relatively expansive pallet of characters and ideas.
So was Joshua and Zion, talk to Ringo at the Crimson Caravan Company if you didn't kill him.
Joshua Graham was a companion in cancelled Fallout Van buren( prequel to New vegas)
@@mrgabest Yeah I hate to say it but we really got "struck by lightning" with an unforgettable game that likely won't be repeated anytime soon. New Vegas is a game where not only did they have ACTUAL WRITERS on staff, but most of those writers had about a decade to ponder about their ideas and refine them. The game itself took 18 months to develop, but the script and major plot points had spent a decade being refined in their heads and imaginations. Making another Fallout game as good as it....? I hate to say it but I don't see it happening.
@Aviator Ranger where did you know that?

New vegas will forever be the gold standard of how to handle DLC content, it's not showed in your face,
but if you look for it, the DLCs are referenced everywhere beforehand.
Interesting, I always felt as if Fallout 3 handled DLC the best. For me, Anchorage and the Endgame DLC were both masterstrokes. Both games DLCs were sublime mind you, but New Vegas' DLC ended up plodding at times. The stories were good at the end, but the journeys to them weren't as good.
Even Fallout 4 had some alright DLC though, for example, Far Harbor (or was it Point Lookout--whichever one was F4) was absolutely excellent as well.
@@detectivephelps9805 I respect your opinion but I have to say fallout 3 dlcs were more about action, I liked the island dlc but other than that it was just fill xp bar
@@detectivephelps9805 fallout 3....with the main quest cut away in half, to become dlc. I do enjoy the hell out of F3 dlcs, but it doesnt tie into any story from the main game(except the main quest dlc because obviously)
I think people that would say NV handle dlc best, say so due to how the dlcs were mentioned and referemced all over the main game and other dlcs. Their story all tied in one huge plot, about the past that affect the mojave.
(Some of NV dlc is pretty bland though. Can really use some more spices.)
While F3 dlcs, feels like a random addition.
Dark Souls series also did the same
@@detectivephelps9805 I always felt the exact opposite: All of F3´s DLC had vast potential, but with the exception of Point Lookout in my opinion, they all fell kinda flat in terms of execution in one way or another:
- Broken Steel outright feels like it was supposed to be main game content that was cut and sold separately and perfectly highlights the nonsense that is the karma system in F3 with its "Choose who to nuke from orbit" ending.
- Operation Anchorage did not really take much advantage of its setting and despite allowing non-linear progression, it has the most "on-rails"-feeling of all the DLC for me and is way too short.
- The Pitt was in a similar way too short and has a rather unsatisfying conclusion no matter who you side with,
and
- Mothership Zeta was just an unfocused mess.
Interesting. So if we piece Ulysses and Joshua’s stories together, the Courier must have brought that last package into the Divide some time before the First Battle of Hoover Dam, which means, ironically, that if the courier hadn’t done that delivery, the Legion might have been exterminated by NCR due to their reinforcements gong through the Divide, and changed the entire course of the Mojave history.

I don't think he's ice cold at all. If anything I think he struggles the most of any character in New Vegas with things like fury and wrath, he might be extremely controlled but I think that's more just a consequence of his past in the Legion rather than him being cold.
The end dialogue with Salt-Upon-Wounds reflects this the most but it also demonstrates his character in a really clear way. He is a man who is really trying to be a good man with the knowledge of a very evil past that he is trying to atone for.

Yeah. F4 has the best gunplay out of all of the fallout games, and weapon customization rivaling that of Gunsmith COD MW, yet FNV has the best story, a very fleshed out one where we can believably fall in love with any faction, as most of the major factions have good and fleshed out reasons for doing what they do.
Love his angle on House. Him and Caesar are essentially the same person just with different ideologies. They're both ambitious visionaries with their own idea of the future for the wastes, they both see Pre-War America as something to abandon unlike the NCR, and they're both want some level of societal change in the west. It's just that House wanted change through innovation and futurism, while Caesar wanted change through self-destruction and regression.
And they both run on arguably one of the most flawed and easily sabotaged systems of the old world; Autocracy.
And much like Caesar, if Mr House dies under any circumstances, then all those promises and plans get shot down with him.
Also that House recruited the tribes in much more nicer manner. Essentially came to them, and like "Guys, how about working for me as casino staff, doing whatever the fuck you want, all on term that you pay me 50% percent of earned. Oh, and I also give you a lot of guns."
Hell, Tops guys are really happy with their life, White Glove is nice too (except Mortimer and his gang), and Omerta is Omerta, being dicks is their moto. Better than "you're a femboy now"

This is interesting. AFAIK, this is the only reference to the God of our alternative universe that exists in the Fallout Universe. Elsewhere, particularly in FO4, the only deity mentioned is Atom. If so, this means that someone at Obsidian made sure this concept survived the war. The Followers don't seem to talk about God. Nobody seems to. It's just glossed over as either completely unimportant or as hokey. The fact that this is even in the game, assuming of course that it does, says a lot. What I cannot say, but it says something significant given the obsession in every game of the series with wielding power, whether it be in caps or nukes or "settlements" or technology or slaves or chems or in hegemony over a territory like old world counterparts. Everyone is obsessed with power, but those obsessed with worship are still usually worshiping power (nuclear power anyway).

Ironhide in *TF: War for Cybetron* AND *TF: Fall of Cybetron*
Caesar's Legion might have been a good faction had fate been reversed with Joshua as the leader. Joshua could have modeled The Legion after Constantine's empire rather than the empire of Augustus. Caeser believes in absolute order even if that order is crippling his rule. He will punish an entire army over the actions of a single unit. "Every tenth man steps out of line and is beaten to death after failure".
He will burn down entire groups of people to send warnings when really he is wasting resources and manpower at that rate. "I killed every man, woman, and child in that tribe". He believes that individuality is a sign of weakness while we learn it is a sign of strength when we look at Ulysses and Joshua. President Tandy herself was a very unique individual that made NCR a world power in the Wasteland. Roger Maxon created a world power known as Brotherhood of Steel by being an individual and using power for good rather than evil.
Rome was the most successful when under Antonius The Pious. Rome had no wars for over 20 years, the economy and society was very stable, Antonius ended up retiring to a Villa at an old age. He was a philosopher that believed in words more than swords. People were respected and he had statues of Abraham, Jesus, and others on his desk alongside a prayer chamber. He didn't see himself as a god like most emperors did. He ended religious persecution under his reign. Caeser isn't as smart as he thinks that he is.
All that thought put into considering how 2 armies move and fight, where the supply lines would be and giving you an exact idea of what it's like outside the play area in the setting's world. More thought put into it than anything in Bethesda's writing
The more I learn about the divide the more I worry how much we fucked the wasteland as a whole because of it.
Not only did we utterly demolish and obliterate a section of america that was forming into it's own community beyond repair, we inadvertently caused the war between NCR and the Legion to drag out by cutting off a rendezvous point, which ended up costing the wasteland even more lives and resources it's already nearly deprived off.
The place itself is also a hell-maker factory, the marked men are even more hostile than a feral ghoul and still have the capacity for weapons and armour making them a worse threat.
And if that weren't enough we woke up an extremely violent and voracious subterranean species capable of wiping out deathclaws by themselves and based on what Ulysses says, are capable of massive breeding potential, possibly spreading out and taking over more than just the mojave and could take out many more communities with very little to hold them back.
There is a mod that expands on that one ending slide where they do expand into the mojave

Courier six: you called?
This is just the devs hyping Lonesome Roads and Ulysses.
(Spoiler) The greatest irony is that Ulysses created the White legs.
In several old testament books there's stories and rules about the Israelites military conquests, how to take slaves and sex slaves, when to spare no elder, women and children of an enemy tribe, how to make animal sacrifices. All of this with God's blessing. Sounds more like the Israelites, the Gods favorite people, were just like the White legs or Legion.
I wonder if Graham or Daniel told these stories, if their Bible contained these stories or if they just pretended to not know it.
As the Senate would say: Ironic.
More proof that these text were written by people of their time. "The spoils of war" was as normal as breathing. Of course it's with God's blessing. Because I want to believe that it is. Of course we're God's favored people. We're us.
@@PapitoQinn I'm not sure I understand your response.
My point is why the White Legs needed to be stopped while the Israelites are the chosen ones? Aren't the Mormons also self proclaimed God's favored (as Graham would say)? What makes the White Legs "bad" and the Mormons "good"?
Is being the strongest being right? "Might is right". Well, that's something Shishio would say.
@Xadion I see. To that I say: War, war never changes
Let it be known that the Israelites had a habit of forsaking God and his law all throughout the old testament and participated in all kinds of activities contradictory to his will. For this God punished them but gave them a road to redemption despite there rebellion.
Problem: The Mormons have 4 holy books, not one, and one must read and understand the complete "standard works", as they call them, to understand the Mormons. Their view on life more closely resembles the Nephites of the Book of Mormon than then Israelites of the Old Testament. Jacob, the second prophet in the Book of Mormon, told the Nephite people that many practices of their fathers, the Israelites, didn't apply to them, and the God forbade them from practicing them. Slavery was one such thing. Also, the Nephites only ever had God on their side when they fought defensive wars. If they fought a war of aggression, God would not strive with them, and they'd be beaten back. But the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price are also important books of scripture to understand if you're going to try to tear the Mormons apart. The simple response to trying to use the Law of Moses against them is them telling you that the Law of Moses was fulfilled by Christ and cannot be practiced anymore (this is even said by Christ in the New Testament) and that the Law of Moses and everything in it was but the "lesser law", which God gave the Israelites to punish them for the golden calf. According to Mormons, Christ brought the "higher law", which supplants the lesser law, rendering it moot.
idk man, I know Vault Dweller is revered as a Wasteland God
but compared to Vault Dweller, Chosen One, Lone Wonderer, and Sole Survivor..
The Courier sounds like a Mailman out of this world bro....he/she is too strong
They're like the Green Berets of mailmen
We're talking about a guy whose jobs is traveling through hostile wasteland carrying valuables that he has to deliver on time and without damaging it.
Someone who can do that by themselves is guaranteed to be OP.
Damn, love this game so much of the writing is just gorgeous prose. Played it on and off for over ten years and still finding new stuff and so many different ways to play and still haven’t gone through all the DLC 😂😂😂😂
You're gonna have to at some point.
makes me wonder what route kellogg went when he left california.
@@bigphatdingus2687 hard to say what was around at that point but it couldent have been an easy journey.
We've seen Deacon reference Vegas, so considering how he and Kellogg were pretty badass super spy type guys it must have been hard.
Joshua Graham is a certified badass. I remember playing on my maxed out character and I shot him. He fucked me up quickly with light shining in darkness.
Joshua Graham could convert me to LDS
Joshua Graham has this intimidating aura when he talks. Gives me chills everytime I hear his voice. Keith Szarabajka did a wonderful job with this performance.
“Any society that derives its power and authority from the will of man alone lives apart from God and will crumble in the end.”-Summarizes most western societies
A fictional Mormon describes my politics and beliefs better than any politician or priest
1:48 that background noise combine with what Graham was saying kinda give me goosebumps
Man the Mummy really got his act together
When does he mention The Divide and Big MT? I never heard this dialogue, and always felt this dlc was more standalone. That's really cool to hear him mention what happens in The Divide before we get to see it ourselves, and hear Ukysses' account.
I think the first we ever hear mention of both the Big MT and the Divide is in the first DLC, Dead Money. When Christine gets her voice back and you speak to her.
@@PapitoQinn no I mean, when does Graham mention them?
@@GhostLink92 Oh, when does this scene happens? A little bit after he moves to the Sorrows camp. Keep checking in with him.
The original New Vegas game was barely planned, they didn't have much time to make the game. Once they had been allowed access to make the different DLCs years after the original game's release, they sorta surrounded the story around Ulysses and built out from there. The Maps, Zion, The Quests, Father Elijah, EVERYTHING.
Personally I like playing New Vegas just for the hunt of acquiring all the unique weapons and unique armor without needing to kill the npc's, it leaves the map unvillivied and allows locations to not be as hollow or empty when you fast travel. (Even if you never talk to the NPCs) Then, once all weapons are acquired and I become unbeatable... then its time to make a seperate save and just have some fun clearing out caves, the Deathclaw Promentory, the back hidden walkway full of cazador nests behind Redrock canyon, the unbeatable swarm of Mirelurks sitting in a little slew directly across from Cottonwood Cove, and I'm sure there are other locations. But if you're reading this and you have New Vegas, check out those areas. I promise you, you won't regret it. There's areas on the map that have pretty fun nests that NOBODY TALKS ABOUT. Use this text you're reading to go look for yourself... unless you're chicken 👀
But as nice as the treasure hunting is... my damned companions always end up dropping random items through the playthrough smfh...
I wish we could see more of in between the divide an big empty
0:26 This exactly what's wrong with the United States and pretty much all countries today (and throughout history)
From the way he was written to the astounding vocal performance of Keith Szarabajka, Joshua Graham is a character I could listen to endlessly and not get bored.
He is so insanely well spoken and captivating, yet never arrogant or flowery in his speeches. Godamn, Obsidian. Hats off.
I wish graham and ulysees brought up more about the big MT. Its clear Atleast Joshua knew of and had seen big mountain.
But he says that he knew of Big MT from what the legion's explorers reported.
@@PapitoQinn fair, fair, one could have only hoped more was to be said
I like that he compares House to Caesar. A lot of New Vegas fans miss how similar the two characters are.
House is a self described Autocrat, and his version of enslavement is much more insidious (Through Capitalism lol). The only difference is that House isn't afraid to use Robots and Technology. Give House about 20 years, and he'll just be the new Caesar, the new Tyrant of the East.
Funny because I would have supported Caesar if not for his distrust of medical technology (that he ironically needs).
i just love how all the dlc's are all related and that some character know about the existence of them and even visited them
This game has/had some of the best video game voice actors of all time.
I feel like this dude's whole ideology makes no sense when the basis for his character is that he used to be in Caesar's legion.
How did he come to the conclusion that Caesar's legion is correct? Did god tell him to do slavery? Then again, i guess there was slavery in the bible, so maybe his ideology actually makes perfect sense if he's reading the bible entirely literally, disconnected from modern day orthodox christianity (cherrypicked) since there's no churches or similar cultural effect to mellow his views. Still, makes it hard to see him as a 'good' person.
I think it was a case of losing then rediscovering your faith. Joshua mentions that Edward (Caesar) was intelligent, which may mean that Edward conditioned Joshua to believe what he was doing with the Legion was righteous. Or, more likely (as it's mentioned that before his burning, Joshua had a fair bit of vanity), Joshua got caught up in the power given to him.
Joshua mentions that he started translating, then giving orders, then leading battles. This leads me to believe that Joshua got caught up in the power (ironically, mirroring Julius Caesar). This explains his belief that he was "born again." This also lines up with the Christian belief that fire is purifying.
Joshua was baptized in water, became a missionary, lost his faith, became a legate, failed Caesar, and was then Baptized and cleansed by fire, regaining his faith.
I agree. His philosophy almost makes it seem as if he was never apart of the legion, and him viewing the NCR as better than the legion makes no sense for a guy who was literally a founding member of the legion. Ulysses was handled much better in this regard which is a shame because ulysses has more reason to hate the legion, having his tribe conquered by the legion. Joshua's philosophy seems to be more the result of the circumstance of losing the first battle of hoover damn and being punished for it than anything else.
@@RedemptionDenied666 Thats what makes him a fantastic character. In the ending slides is shown that the only ending where he gets a bit of mental peace is the one where the tribal Gobledigook guy is spared.
Joshua was reborn in his faith again, but he undeniably has a lust for power and killing. He is still completely molded by his Legion time and he seeks the feeling of killing for something he considers righteous again. If Caesar gave him the option to redeem himself by achieving a great victory for the Legion, he would have kept believing in Caesar.
He resents the Legion, thats why I roll eyes when people use him as authority when he says the Legion is doomed without Caesar. Yeah bro, not personal at all.
They nailed that voice actor. Makes Joshua the best character
As a non-believer, Joshua Graham with his words and charisma tempt me...It makes me feel....disquieted. But only just.
Sir, this is a wendys.
Nah, he’s right.
Honest Hearts came out first right? It's pretty cool that he alludes to expansions that arent out yet
Honest Hearts was the second expansion. Dead Money was first. Third was Old World Blues. Final one was Lonesome Road.
We need more Joshua’s in the world
New Vegas lore is insanely well fleshed out
Ok so we can assume Big MT is in fact near the Mojave. Idk im just trying to find all the rough locations of each dlc.
IIRC they say Big MT used to be a mountain that got bombed or something, so its probably situated in a mountain range
There is a map on the internet where pretty much all locations of every fallout game are compiled on one big map and I think I remember seeing Big MT being actually very close to the Fallout 1 map
@@snekans554 that makes a lot of sense since Lobotomites were planned for Fallout 2 but were cut from the game and they appeared in a loading screen for Fallout 1. Its almost like the Big M.T's location is a reference to what could have been included in Fallout 2.
How amazing is this dialogue. Fuck I wish fallout 4 had this level or writing. Oh well at least we have mods.
Fallout NV is the best game, but with the worst fans
How so?
@@PapitoQinn more often than not will insult (insult is an understatement, more like writing a whole damn poem just to demonstrate their superior taste) people for not considering NV the best game ever created or for "daring" to enjoy "vile" games such as FO4
>Joshua
*Elder* Graham. Dying be disrespectful to the lord's very emisary.
I could never really get invested with NV because of how much there is to do in that game but the dlc's are awesome. Obsidian really did a great job with that game.
Joshua Graham for President
This was the Fallout series at its prime, the dialogues, atmosphere makes the game so unique. It sadly can't be found anywhere in Fallout 4 and writing is just plain bland and boring.
Far Harbor was pretty cool
@@rileymccreanor6492 Yes, I agree. It was even better than the main storyline.
It’s nowhere near as good as fallout new Vegas relentlessly jerk it off as
Bethlol did their absolute best character work with a lot of the companions for Fo4. That's a low bar to clear, sure, given the Adoring Fan (Oblivion) I-Am-Sworn-To-Carry-Your-Burdens (Skyrim) Charon's Shotgun (Fo3). But they're far more interesting to talk to and some of them have interesting quests.
Still largely shite game tho.
fallout new vegas: deep philosophical dialogue with the "antagonist"
fallout 4: haha institute go kaboom
Who wouldve thought that alls mormons needed to be taken seriously was bandages, a gravely voice, and a .45
I love how the courier storyline is basic around the legion story and characters
From Rex an ex pet of Caesar
To Joshua and Ulysses
To vulpes
To Caesar
It makes doing a legion courier storyline worth doing cuz unlike the ncr
The legion is basic following you around everywhere and watching you = Vulpes
trying to recruit you etc
Man fallout without subtitles feels weird
This is interesting because I just started the Lonesome Road and only now realized how much foreshadowing there was in the previous DLC's
They're all connected in some way. Minus lonesome road, you're basically retracing the footsteps of Ulysses.
If Joshua was a faction choice of who to join I would've joined his instead of any of the other factions in new vegas
i absolutely hated honest hearts as a DLC. daniel was an idiot and the white legs were an incredibly boring enemy. joshua is the only part of the DLC i like and he's likely one of the best NPCs in the entire game. it's a shame they didn't make salt-upon-wounds an actual npc to talk and interact with.
this dlc i think have the least amount choice for us players.
we always have to fight the white legs(as far as i remember) while in other dlc we can side with anyone.
also a great waste that it has the least amount of importan(or not so important but still fun to talk to) npc
but i like the dlc quite a bit, the view looks nice(for that generation fallout anyway)
@@whoami1449 just imagine if you could talk to salt-upon-wounds and convince him joining caeser's legion would be the death of his tribe. you could then convince him to make peace with the other two tribes and end the DLC that way.
I want Keith Szarabajka to read books to me before bed.
More people could benefit from hearing this characters words than they know
Honest Hearts markets other DLC for two minutes and eleven seconds
I wonder if he keeps the bandages on his skin because it still bleeds and gets pused up from the burns or if he just doesn't want people to see him
The bandages are there for medical/sanitary reasons and I highly doubt he’s superficial enough care about what other people thinks of him lol.
I think he mentions he has to constantly replace the bandages. He lives in constant agony, but carries on like a badass.
@@samuellund1377 i think he mentions how he indeed still feels pain, and that drug doesn't help anymore.
so yeah he is badass
Severe burns never really heal. Not properly. That's why they are treated with skin grafts-- which don't always work. He wears the bandages because he essentially does not HAVE skin anymore. If your medical skill is high enough, you can ask him about it. HE tells you how he has to change the bandages every day-- and how exposing his skin to open air makes the pain of the burning come right back...
@@Himax9 thank you for the explanation
Does Joshua "Respects" caesar out of the fact that he spend years with him seeing that he wasnt a bad person or does it out of "Love the sinner hate the sin" mentality?
Didn't expect you to cover more than KOTOR
I cover games that I find have interesting writing.
So Joshua's main problem with the NCR is that they don't have a religion? Well, I can kinda see his point. Certainly a boring society to live in, when stand-up comedians have so little to work with
Wait, who dis?
Joshua Graham, from the Honest Hearts DLC.
''who dis?''
wtf you can't serious, did you even play New Vegas?
@@hikari014 thank you
@@Badookum Yes, in fact, I played it when it came out and did another play through last month, as for the comment above you, it is a dlc which obviously from my question I did not purchase.
