The original uses completely proprietary tactile switches (that have a larger housing compared to most small form factor tact switches today), so that's hardly a surprise tbh. Though it seems 8bitdo did make custom switches to the same size/shape of the original, but the button itself is different (as well as the side of the plunger that actuates looks slightly thinner). The originals seem to have a bad habit of failing quickly, so I'm wondering if these new switch designs are more durable...? Guess it's only a matter of time to know, lol. Still, looks mighty yummy. Yuri? Hell yeahhhh I lover her. Kyo and Iori are cool too! I kinda suck with Terry though. Funny thing is that even though I'm good with Yuri I seem to play like as§ with Ryo or Robert considering they play ver similarly 😅 go figure!
@@Sarumaru, Ryo and Robert are my SNK Ken & Ryu equivalents. Terry Bogard is the first SNK fighting game character I became good with playing the original Fatal Fury back in the 90's when my friend got NEo Geo for Christmas. We played the hell out of it lol. Yuri is just a cute little badass!
I think that seeing you, who knows how to rock a KOF game, speaks honest volumes on how good or not this is. Freakin awesome Sarumaru-san! BTW, whats better in your opinion - an MVS, AES, or CD library? (and why)
Thanks for the great comment! I appreciate it. Now, answering your about which library is better... that's a hard one! The Neo-Geo arcade is always something that was a part of my life growing up as a kid who spent so much of my in the arcades up until my adult years. So you would think I'd say MVS. However, the Neo-Geo CD is my favorite (even with it's limited library and horrible load times!). Actually, I have a complete Japanese set of Neo-Geo CD games. The MVS though is amazing and I want to get more MVS carts! I play those on an OMVS. Of course, when it comes to collecting Neo, AES is king. But, many games cost many that only a long could afford 😜. Hopefully that gives you a little insight on my overall thoughts about the Neo-Geo. I am making more Neo-Geo related content soon. Thanks again!

Nice to see a company get the layout of the neo geo controller right and put an effort to have micro switches in the control stick when SNK said it was hard is nice to see. I have mixed feelings about the artwork on the controller. I love the artwork itself but it looks like something I worry about about wearing off over time. Here's some bacon. 🥓🥓🥓🥓🥓🥓🥓🥓🥓
Right! And it feels real good too which is a huge plus. Especially when. You compare it to the garbage Neo Geo mini controller 😖 and yeah, the artwork isn't something I'm crazy about but it was one that delivered within a day. The plain one was two weeks out yet 😅 Now feed me pork strips!

Great review. Got the black one coming in soon. Does the slightly cheaper feel affect performance compared to the OG controller, or is it just a matter of adapting? I am not expecting good durability at all, but the M30 and modded joysticks are more my primary controllers for emulated games (or old style modern games). I will use this one heavily when I get it to test durability though. Normally its more of a specialised controller that I love for certain games, especially fighters with fireball type motions (nothing with double taps like MK, or running moves in beat em ups). Reason I said I dont expect this controller to last long is because I kept purchasing the PS2 SNK controller version and the OG controller (with an adapter) and none of them lasted more than a few months. They were pre-owned but I havent had that issue with membrane pad controllers that I also bought pre-owned. The stick just becomes mushy and you dont feel the distinct clicks anymore, rendering it as trash. When I was buying these controllers I was paying 100-120 a pop then re-selling them as broken and buying another. This got old and expensive to maintain, so I gave up on them. The Versus fighting pad by PDP also tried this, but those controllers were shit. The rubber was melting off all of them and the stick felt extremely imprecise. Loved the dpad/stick on the SNK ones though. Its too bad they didnt incorporate the 6 face buttons of the PS2 version, but the inclusion of turbo is awesome and something I always wanted on this controller. Id be willing to pay 35 dollars every 6 months if the controller lasts atleast that long, but time will tell. Maybe a new one will last slightly longer than the used ones I got. I doubt they fixed the original quality issues. I saw a tear down and it looked identical to the OG insides.
So your comment addresses one of my major concerns about this pad and that is the longevity factor. I feel that in terms of the micro switches, I feel like they'll become worn with use. But I'm hoping that it takes it at least more than a year of regular use before it gets to that point! Maybe I am being to hopeful but like you said, time will tell. Not, the pad itself does feel like a downgrade in terms of quality compare to the original pad, but not to the point where I am noticing it during gameplay. I'll be playing it side by side with my original on the MiSTer (using the SNAC USB adapter) to see how they compare. By the way, thanks so much for this engaging comment and for watching the video. I appreciate it!
@@Sarumaru Appreciate the detailed response. No Problem, really enjoy the breakdown you gave. Thats good to read atleast. Performance would be my main concern, though its always nice to have that nice feel too. Sounds like the controller still has a nice clickiness and feel, just not quite as substantial as the OG controller. Maybe the click isnt as pronounced. Ill really have to test it in fighters with fireball motions, as that was where the controller really blew me away. Loved it on some platformers too. For shooters and some other types of games I felt I was faster with a pad like the M30 or a modded stick, so it wasnt my main pad, but the most enjoyable pad to use, feel wise. I found myself using it even when it wasnt optimal for certain games, for me. For 35 bucks Im willing to replace them if I can get atleast 6 months of on and off use. Still kind of shitty, but I might be willing if it feels close enough to the original feel. Be nice if it actually lasts longer. One of my M30s lasted me about 2 years and probably over 500 games beaten, before the pad was basically crushed in with very undefined responses. So they are pretty durable too. Still waiting for Saturn support on the Mister, but definately interested in checking it out. Too much input lag on Saturn emulation, especially for shooters.
@@theconsolekiller7113 I sure hope that it lasts longer than 6 months! The M30 has lasted me over 2 years and it's still going good with it. Hopefully it doesn't die on me anytime soon. Good Saturn emulation on the MiSTer is something that I hope happens soon! That's one of the main reasons I keep going back to the Polymega (that, and the excellent Neo Geo CD emulation). Hopefully that's something that happens for the MiSTer sooner than later.
Nice. Hopefully it lasts you longer but atleast the M30 is cheap for a few years of use. When I was playing newer consoles heavily Id be lucky to get a year out of these analog controllers before getting stick drift. I started embracing emulation heavily around 1999-2000. Sold all my old consoles and games when emulation was up to my standard. At the time I was hooking a PC with video out to a CRT and my stereo, though at the start I had a shitty PC and played some games on the CRT monitor with no sound, or running them too slow and using a very shitty gravis game pad. Things improved pretty quickly though. By 1999-2000 emulation for alot of older consoles was quite good, even PS1. So when it comes to the old games emulation is really the only method for me, as my collection is gone. Saturn is really the only thing that seems to have that input lag, for some reason. @@Sarumaru
@@theconsolekiller7113 Nice! I never dabbled in any PC emulation in the past. I was always a pretty hardcore console guy here. But nowadays that's changed with the Advent of tmsome new emulation consoles like the Evercade, Polymega, the Miyoo mini RetroPie and things like the MiSTer. And it's not because I was a purist or anything like that, it's just that I didn't like to tinker with stuff but now it's been made so easy. The only time in the past I really played the crap out of emulation was with the first Xbox which was an emulation powerhouse for the time! Ahhh those were good times :)
Yes! I wanted to know your opinion on this since hearing about it. So I haven't had an original controller but I did love the micro switches on the neo geo pocket. Trustiubbbubbb!! The Neo-Geo Pocket definitely feels best, but comparing it to that might be unfair on my part. But just comparing to the OG NG pad, it feels pretty good, although not AS good. I'm just hoping it stays responsive for as long as possible! Thanks for the love Trustyburger! ❤
The Pope blesses your new Controllers. I love 8bitdo but the 2: controllers I had from them just sort of died on me. Both cases the battery draining killed their ability to sync with anything. I hope this is something they've fixed. They are otherwise fantastic controllers.
A Pope blessing!! Things are looking up again ❤ thank you sir 😃 Man that sucks to hear. I had a similar issue with two of my RetroBit controllers (both Saturn, one wired and one wireless) randomly dying on me and the third wired one I have is starting to fail now as well. I wonder if sometimes it's just the luck of the draw with some defective controllers. Thankfully, none of my 8BitDo controllers have crapped out on me! *Knocks on wood* 😅
Nice video, Saru, as always. And it's a nice follow up to the one Ron did the other day. Looks like this controller will definitely be in my future. I personally don't have any familiarity with the original Neo Geo CD controller, but the next best things I DO have is the Neo Geo USB pad for the PS3/PC and my faithful Camo Blue Neo Geo Pocket Color. The USB pad has a nice 6-button layout and L & R triggers and was hoping they could have brought that layout back, but I'll take what I can get. I'm going to nab 2 of the regular controller varients, although they'll be for other people who stop by and as a backup should this PS3 controller decide to not work for some reason. That controller (and the PS2 equivalent) go for some mucho $s & ¥ now a days @_@
Ceruleon! Thanks for the comment and support as always 😃 You know, I never really played with any of those PS2 or PC variants of the NGCD pad but I did hear that they were flimsy. Was that true? Does yours still work? 😲
@@Sarumaru To be honest, there was SOME truth to that. For a time I thought my pad was broken, but after opening it up one day and not seeing anything wrong, it performed as good as new ever since, haha!
Look, I've had plenty of trips around the sun, and I was playing Neo-Geo games in an actual arcade, in the actual 1990s. Here's what I wanna know... is that clicky stick as good as the one on the Neo-Geo Pocket? Because that thing was checkmate in an argument about high quality controls on a portable. I'd like to play Neo-Geo Pocket again, but I can't do that on my Switch Lite because the D-pad is such a lost cause. If the Neo-Geo Pocket had a controller that was absolutely perfect for fighting games, the Switch Lite has a controller that's absolutely miserable for everything. It sucks for fighting games, it sucks for arcade games, it sucks for VISUAL NOVELS, it sucks for every genre of video game currently in existence. It sucks so bad it even sucks for touchscreen games.
I'm not sure why I found your dismay for the Switch D-pad so humorous 😆 But yes. It sucks as§. And no, the micro switches in this are definitely not as good as the ones you would find on a Neo Geo pocket and no where near as satisfying to use. With that said, it's still pretty solid. BUT, the Neo Geo mini pad set the bar SO LOW that I feel that even the smallest improvement is celebrated 😅 I do like this pad though and still recommend it even though it isn't as satisfying to use as the OG controller or NGP.
@@Sarumaru I just got one of these from Woot. It's all right, but the throw is massive... you can push the click stick a few millimeters in any direction and not have it actuate. This was not the case with the Neo-Geo Pocket, which was much more sensitive.

Definitely want to get one for myself to try.
Ahhh makes sense. Thanks again for the info!
Got my Mai edition yesterday which surprised me because I forgot it was coming out that time. My standard Neo Geo still hasn't shipped. I got these for my Retropie but I haven't tried to use it yet. 8Bitdo gets enough of my money but obviously I needed these. Anyhow my favorite KOF team depends on the game the only 100% sure thing that it includes King and Yuri. I'm not actually a big fan of Mai. In 97 I'll replace her normally with Chizuru.
I wanted the Mai one and a base color pad but neither of them would get to me until later in the month so Kyo it was 😅
As far as your KOF team goes, and this is gonna sound crazy, but Yuri and King are always in my main team (except for the times King wasn't playable 😢). Thanks for watching and the comment!!
11:25 First try, baby!!
I can't wait for mine to come it. I got the plain black one.
Haha yaaasss!
I also originally ordered the black one but said it was coming later in the month so I switched it to Kyo (Ioribwas the only other choice that would arrive today so Kyo won!) And I was really surprised! Than for watching Moonjellies!
My favorite King of fighters team is Felicia, Chun Li and Rogue from Mortal Kombat 2. :P
Lol wat!
Es compatible por Bluetooth en steam deck??
Can anyone confirm getting it to work with a Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro?
Someone in the comments earlier said it didn't work? I'm not for certain since I don't have one of those to try it out with 😅 If I find out anything, I'll come back here and let you know!
Great review! just ordered one of these. Also, is that an ASUS VG275Q? friggin AWESOME monitor for retro gaming and emulation in particular.
Thanks! Let me know how you like it after you use it 😃 The monitor is the next one up I think? The Asus VG259Q. It's great! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Oye Saru, gran video.

I dont have a neo geo cd but that controller looks cool!
Well, it doesn't work on a Neo Geo CD anyway haha 😆 but hopefully they will make it so it does work on an NGCD eventually 😃
that's also works out of the box with blueretro, it means neogeo
This is great information! Thanks for the tip and the comment 😃👍
Amazing video as always, glad to see micro switches back and not that awful neo geo mini controller
Matthew! YES! It's awesome to have microswitches back 😁 Thanks for watching!!
I won't hold my breath but hoping they release a Neo Geo dongle.
Hey! I hear some people in the comments are saying it works with that Bluetooth dongle that Stone Age Gamer is selling for the Neo Geo controllers?? 😳 If it does, that would be awesome! BUT ñ they're sold out womp womp :( I'll have to check back and hotel I can snag one. Thanks for the comment! 😃👍
My favorite teams are URI, Roy, and Terry or swap Terry for either Kyo or Iori. If Mr. Karate is a playable character dependent upon which edition we’re playing he’s on the list as well.
I bet it'd work great with the C64 core
But Mark, does it have enough buttons to play Ghost Chaser?! 😮😮😮
Why no lag test?
I was trying to get the video out in a timely manner but I may do a latest with a tool. I'm sure times will differ between BT and 2.4ghz modes. Thanks for watching!
The graphic looks really good on that controller 👍
Yeah it's pretty neat! At first I wasn't too crazy about the art but I guess it's alright lol. I would prefer s plain black one though. I'll have to get one of those later 😅 Thanks for watching Gizmo!!
The plain one was two weeks out yet 😅
Now feed me pork strips!
Was excited about the artwork till I looked further. Looks kinda more stretched than I liked and not thrilled with the quality.
Haha! Yeaaaahhh the pixelated fire is a bad look. The texel density between Kyo and the flame is just jarring. Then others features being printerd at different resolutions, I could have gone without the blocky flames lol
@@Sarumaruthat Neo Geo Mini controller has much more value than FX Unit Yuki, your terrible attempts at anime art, and your existence. Sandra should have broke your Turbo Grafx-16 and your Pokemon games when you were a teen. She's just as bad as a mother as Barbara Chandler 😂
Is it works on switch?
Out of the box it does not work. However, you can use the 8bitdo bluetooth adapter 2 to use it on the Switch.
Thanks for the attention. 😊

Excellent! Thank you!! 😃😃😃
Great review! Pulling of DP moves on it with ease is important for me when it comes to snk fighters. Just ordered 2 😂
Qué bueno saber que valen la pena
La neta que si. Están mucho más mejor que las que lanzaron con el Neo-Geo Mini. Esos eran una c@gada 😆
lets cross our fingers and hope we get that OG Neo geo dongle. that would be 10/10 lol
Hell yeah gurl I need me some dingle dongle action!! Who we gotta beat up?

The biggest issue with the 8bitdo controller is the weak springs leading to poor diagonal windows and long throws being necessary.
The original also has a long throw It's just part of the original controller design
It was the pocket that has the shorter throw
@@HollowRick I think the Original controller I have has 3rd party springs, as you only need to go 85-90% of the way to diagonal for it to register rather than thr 95-100% the 8bitdo one does.
I've honestly been shopping around for replacement springs to get it closer to those.
Good
Saturn emulation on the MiSTer is something that I hope happens soon!
Not the same feel kinda sucks and the sound even sounds different from your video. this is the review I was looking for! I'm for sure still getting one. Awesome job on this review! I love it! Saruuuzzz!!!!
Very good comparison/review.
So many controller reviews are so surface level and useless. Yours is one of the good one. Nice work. Thank you!
Thanks so much! I appreciate reading comments like this and am very glad liked the video 😃
Things are looking up again ❤ thank you sir 😃
Man that sucks to hear.
My Big 6 Retrobit will randomly pause at times. Saturn pad is still going strong.
Probably is just luck of the draw as you said.
Crossing my fingers this NG pad ends up being durable!
yeah if it lasts I might grab one myself
I wonder if it works on ps3?
Hi! It will work on PS3 but only if you have the 8bitdo bluetooth adapter 2 (20usd). It does not work with the provided adapter. Hotel that helps!
@@jessragan6714That's the difference between the pocket and the original CD controller
