- This is just a short update on my status after my motorcycle accident. Itchy Boots is not the only one to break bones after a low-side motorcycle accident. This one really hurts and there is a long road ahead.

Do you plan on buying a motorcycle airbag vest?
A few days ago I bought an airbag vest from AlpineStars, the TechAir 5.
Definitely considering it now.
Hey, Rembo! Zeitgeist here. Glad you’re recovering, brother!
Vest? Yes, absolutely. I’m wearing a Dainese Smart Vest. Won’t ride without it.
Got tech air 3 as much lighter airbag cover spine so back protector is redundant
I have owned a Helite Turtle 2 airbag vest since 2020 and use it every single ride. My son is about to take his MSF Basic Course and I bought one for him as well. Also wear a modular full face helmet, armored shorts and knee and shin armor under my pants and motorcycle boots and gloves. I too live in South Florida (Miami) and even with the heat I gear up every single ride, no matter how short. Knock on wood in 30 years of riding I have yet to crash or go down and really only have had a couple of somewhat close calls that with defensive riding and situational awareness avoided being accidents. I have a ‘20 Scout Bobber and a ‘23 Yamaha XSR900. Once you recover and are ready to ride give me a shout and will be happy to ride with you. Heal up and thank goodness you will be OK.
Been riding 44yr, still at 68. All crotch rockets. Been down once...1984. My head went into the curb....and my helmet saved my ass. And face....since I wore a Bell full face. No broken bones, but my fairing was a mess and I was sore as hell from the bike landing on top of me. Still have the exhaust burn on my calf!
Ouch. A permanent reminder
A testament to ATGATT and physical conditioning. God speed.
Rembo, I’ve kicked around the idea of an air vest for two years. The cost and added hassle kept me on the fence. After watching your videos over the last two weeks, I’m off the fence. I decided on the Dainese Air Vest because it doesn’t require tethering, and it works if rear-ended. I ordered my vest on line, and should be here tomorrow. If this vest ever saves me, I’ll have you to thank. If I never need it, the peace of mind it will provide will make the money well spent. Looking forward to more RUclips from you in the future. Get well my friend.
Great choice. I wish I had one on.
Sorry for the low side man. Great advice on the vest. Brave of you to upload the accident respect to you Sir.
Glad you’re okay Rembo. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Hey, thank you very much.
Really sad to see you go down. Wish you a speedy recovery Rembo.
Thank you
That was the most devastating, violent video I have seen . .. a gentle ride going 28mph, calm, no traffic, plenty of road space... my air vest will be purchased... thank you
Please buy one
So sorry to hear Rembo, heal quick! I’ve been wearing the Alpinestars Tech Air 5 for 3 years now. When I witnessed my close friend hit a deer in front of me, I decided if I were going to continue to ride, it would only be with an air vest.
Thanks. Tech Air 7 is my choice
After watching your video - definitely went out and got a vest. I'm a new rider and was already on the fence about getting one, but your video helped the decision.
Hope you have a speedy recovery!
Glad I could help!
Glad you and Noraly (Itchy Boots) are both healing. Both low speed crashes.
Yes, both low speed low-sides with significant injuries.
@@RemboUSMCHearing both of you in pain really scared me. I've been with people in pain. It's harder to hear when I'm not there. Heal quickly.
Shoutout to Rib #4, the goat for staying unbroken.
Glad to see you on the mend Rembo, but so bummed to hear of the nature of these injuries. Yikes.
What's better, the airbag vests with the cable that connect to the bike or the ones connected to the phone with the accelerometer connection?
Be well
My concern with the tethered airbag is that on a hard low side, you may not be far enough off the bike for it to deploy. Electronics are getting better and have really proven themselves, so I am putting my money with the electronic version of deployment.
@@RemboUSMC That's what I thought too. Doug agreed. Hard to tell from your footage for sure, but I do wonder if you would have come off the bike enough to pull the tether before you hit the ground.
Heal soon, man.
Rembo:Thank you for sharing that unfortunate and painful experience with us. Greetings from Bogotá D.C. - COLOMBIA 💪🏻 🇨🇴
Muchas gracias
Just happened to catch this video. I had an accident in 2020 a car ran (60 mph I believe) a red light way late and I was going 40mph and no way to avoid hitting the rear side of the car. Witnesses said I flew 100 feet. God and my Helmet saved my life. Full face helmet is essential in my opinion - bare min! I see so many with no helmet or those crappy half helmets. Protect your entire head and face. Had 12 compound fractures (bones sticking out) my left arm, two compound breaks above my left knee and one break below my knee, fractured ankle, six broken ribs right side and my right lung filled with blood and fluid had to be drained going in through my back. Broken left shoulder and wrist and fractured right shoulder and the bone in my upper right shoulder was warped and still has a bulge to this day. My helmet had similar scratches and I had a brain bleed but all in all after four surgeries and rods and pins Im doing pretty well considering. I used the pain meds and my trauma surgeon and doctor slowly tapered me off. No way I wanted to feel that pain every day no way especially during physical therapy days. 30 days in ICU and another 30 days in hospital then they moved to therapy hospital 30 more days in recovery and therapy followed with three months in a wheelchair staying with my Mom and Step Dad they had to build a wheel chair ramp before the hospital allowed me to stay there (thankfully my step dad was a carpenter aluminum ramps cost a fortune to rent or buy) I was lucky they took me in vs having to go to an assisted living care home with elderly and demensia patients hollering all day and night. Had a friend who had to go to assisted living after his accident and he said it was horrible there. Finally 8 months of physical therapy. Helmets absolutely save lives! I dont really ride much now but I agree the vests are a good idea. Too many people distracted on their cell phones and running red lights I see every day now. People seem on edge and aggressive especially toward motorcycles. I guess the stunt riders ruin it for the rest of us just wanting a peaceful ride. Glad you are okay and not in worse shape. I just saw another channel (Moto Giant) a guy had his sleeping bag get caught in his back wheel and high sided lost his right foot and two toes on his left foot. He said he was doing 80 mph too! Riding is serious business and you never know but make sure gear on the bike is secure and wear gear and always keep a sharp lookout especially in all intersections!! things happen so fast when you least expect it. Finally, last rant, when I was in the ICU another rider was admitted the nurse told me has was 60 years old on his first ride with a new harley and had an accident with no helmet first ride. Nurse said the man will be in a nursing home with brain injuries the rest of his life! I pray often for those trauma staff and first responders they are true heros and see all this madness every single day! They told me several stories about motorcycle recks every spring it always ramos up! Be careful. God Bless be safe yall.
Wow @sailgoal what a traumatic experience that must have been. That was certainly a very long road to recovery. You are definitely lucky to be alive. Thank goodness for your helmet. We as a group often overlook or even brush aside the danger because we love the feeling of riding a motorcycle. It is when you are reset with injuries from a motorcycle accident that safety gets put back into the correct perspective. Thank tyou so much for sharing with us. What an amazing story.
I wish you swift recovery, Rembo!
Thank you
Thanks for the update Rembo. And glad that you’re doing better-little by little right. You are doing the motorcycle community a great service by sharing your experience. Sadly but true there are many out there who believe it will never happen to them. Just today I saw someone wearing a helmet, jacket and shorts. Obviously he favors his upper torso. BTW…the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 fits over the shoulders, not a vest. I’d wear one on the track, but probably too restrictive for street riding combined with a jacket. The Tech-Air 3 is a vest but you will have to provide your own back protector.
I have the Tech 5 and ride under my leather jacket on the street and its not bad at all. The back piece that the canisters sit in protrudes a bit and you can feel it but the rest of the jacket is pretty low profile. I'd say well worth the added protection it gives than the vest only version.
Great info. Thank you for your words.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
Thanks for continuing to share these updates and glad you are doing better 🤙
You bet
I'm glad to see you better...Patience friend, time flies and in no time you'll be back on the bike...👍🏻🤟🏻💪🏻
Hope so!
Thanks for the update! Glad to hear you are on the mend. It's amazing how a slow speed crash can mess someone up so much. Pavement is not forgiving. I wear the Alpinestars Tech 5 air vest. I've needed it twice in the last 2 years while doing some Club racing. One of my crashes was at 70 plus miles an hour. I low-sided just like you, and walked away with no upper body injuries. I somehow managed to break my right hand, and finished off my left hip, which is already degrading due to an old Army injury. But I have to say that the air vest did its job. You have my two thumbs up on using that vest! Heal up quickly so you can get back on that bike and finish that review. Nothing kicks an old Marine's ass!
I am happy the vest has worked for you. Ride safe and thank you for posting.
Feel better, thanks for sharing your experiences
Thank you too
God Bless Stay Positive Brother !!!
Thanks, you too!
Glad to see you back on the ‘big screen ! OORAH, JarHead out!
Thanks brother
I have an airbag vest and slowly stopped wearing it. I will now use it 100% of the time. Thanks for sharing!
Is it not breathable? Uncomfortable? Which one do you have?
Glad it was helpful!
@@Yanas_Olyah I have the Dainese airbag vest. Air doesn't pass through very well and it's a bit cumbersome. But, I'd rather have it on that not.
Feel better
Thank you very much
Hopefully your recovery will go smoothly have been thinking about a vest myself for some time all the best Ged
You’re doing amazingly well. As a veteran of broken ribs, it’s hard to describe to people exactly how much it limits you.
Yes, it’s a very different type of break because you’re constantly breathing-ist Ing, moving and trying to just function like normal. The ribs do everything.
Hi Rembo, happy to see you are day by day better (hope my English is understandable)
Yes, thank you. Your english is good.
Glad your ok, tough break for sure and its amazing how much damage can happed under 30 mph... I live in south florida and I rock the alpine star air tech 3, I like the coverage and I try not to ride without.
I appreciate it. Ride safe down here.
I hope you get well soon Rembo! Regards from Brazil.
Muito obrigado
Glad you’re on the mend and the aftermath wasn’t worse. After your video, I immediately went out and bought a Dainese Smart Airbag Jacket. They should give you a commission.
I am glad they are doing what is best for your safety. Thank you for posting.
just fyi.....You mentioned in one of your videos about looking into getting an airbag-vest. Was on a ride this morning and 3 of the guys had the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5. All were happy with it but all 3 have not yet crashed in it. Pricey but probably well worth it.
I would say it is worth it after crashing recently. The pain, hospitalization, time lost at work and rehab time is worth a lot more than the cost of an airbag vest.
I wish you a speedy recovery man!
Thank you very much
Glad you're back on your feet. Dang five ribs! Hope you heal up quickly!
Thank you very much.
Glad to see that you are recuperating well. I am on my first trip using the AlpineStars Tech-Air 3. As they say: “It was all going so well..until it wasn’t. I feel that the risks of these out of the blue low speed get offs far outweighs the cost of the airbag vest. FWIW, the TechAir 3 is comfortable and reasonably light weight and can be packed away on the bike if need be. Heal up soon!
Agree as a trauma medic got rid of my ixon too hit heavy hit tech air 3
Thanks for the tips!
We should have a discussion because I spent many years as a critical care flight paramedic on a trauma helicopter.
I just saw that Noraly, “Itchy Boots” had to abandon her Africa trip due to a low speed get off causing a broken collarbone. Clearly, there is ample justification for using an airbag vest!
First, definitely buying a vest - leaning toward the Dainese as I want to wear it outside my jacket. Thank you for sharing your experience, I think you are doing a great service to riders that don't apprecaite the value of having gear in a crash. I used to race cvma, wera and wsmc, so I've had my fair share of crashes. The one that messed up my neck was pretty bad and what helped me in recovery - sorry to offer unsolicited advice - are two supplements. Magnesium Citramate by Thorne - helps relax your muscles and with sleep. Ligaplex II by Standard Process - its for broken bones and damaged joints. Its no miracle cure, but every little bit helps. Take care of yourself Rembo and wishing you a speedy recovery.
That’s some great information that I hope everyone finds helpful. I appreciate you posting this information and sharing with the group.
Looks like your doing well
So far so good.
Hey Rembo, slowly does it getting recovered. These days, it really is slow process. Rehabilitation is priority now. Leave the bikes on charge & focus on your body. Take care, heal up & looking forward to your opinions of air bag vests👌
Thank you for your words of wisdom. I appreciate it.
@@RemboUSMC I’m your age and we certainly now fall like a sack of potatoes. We just don’t bounce like yesteryears.
I’m 72 yo. This past winter I debated if it was finally time to hang up the helmet and stop riding. Let’s face it: at 72 if you go down you’ll crumble like a potato chip. Well, I decided to keep riding, but as a consolation to the rational side of my brain I decided to purchase and wear an airbag vest (Helite E-Turtle 2).
Your recent unfortunate incident proves that I made the right decision.
Yes Sir, you make the right decision. Protect what you can. Safe riding.
Im 52 and Im considering no more. Had a bad accident in 2020. A lot of ptsd. A bad crash is NO fun. God Bless be safe.
An airbag vest? I've never even heard of such a thing.
Hi rembo, ouch!! Sneeze man! that’s like the definition of pain in your condition , you must have just gone down heavy eh! I’m still looking into airbags man I appreciate your honesty and sincerity and I am praying you can recover / heal quick and LOVE your videos ,, keep trooping on bro 👊🏻 🙏🏼
Thank you very much Geoff.
Glad the recovery is going well with no complications.......I'm sure everybody and their mother is giving you advice, only thing I advise is (when you're able) do you PT and don't try to rush back to quickly.
Thank you for your advice, I actually really appreciate it.
Got an Alpinestars Tech Air 5 for track days, but since you are able to change the settings in the app from race/track to street, I also wear it while street riding. Being in Arizona, it does add another layer that restricts air flow for cooling, but worth it for the extra protection. Heal up brother!
Thank you very much. I appreciate you posting.
@@RemboUSMC Gotta pay those medical bills somehow! 😏
Glad your healing and on the road to recovery. You're thinking about Alpinestars Tech Air. I have the 5 and it is great except in the heat, I can't wear it in Texas. I am getting the E Turtle from Helite tomorrow and will be reviewing it.
Please let us know how you like the E - turtle
@@RemboUSMC I'll do a review soon and share.
I just posted my initial ride/review of the Helite E Turtle vest ruclips.net/video/glGvxE0LAuM/видео.htmlsi=v6o14ANWwJvYtT3O
Two unsolicited suggestions: Get an Arai Corsair X (Ducati has a great looking one) or the equivalent. I don’t think the side protection was very good on your AGV, given the relative low speed of your incident. If you want to ditch the muscle relaxers, try Aleve & two Tylenol, together, a few times a day. I used that, post surgery, instead of narcotics, and also use it to calm my rotator cuff flare-ups.
The Alpinestars Tech 5 vest (which I have) is good, but their more recent offerings are better, allowing the user to replace the gas cylinders.
Great info. Thank you for sharing.
You bet! And thank you for your service. That’s quite a harrowing experience.
I have been thinking about an airbag for some time.
Your's was a slow speed spill. An airbag would have helped immensely.
I may just buy one now. Get well soon. 🙏
Thank you for sharing. Stay safe.
Glad to see you are doing better, imagine wearing a three quarter helmet.... yikes... you would need a tube just to eat... wear your gear everybody...
Thank you!
I’ve ordered and tested several airbags in the last month or so. I was looking for the one with most protection while being able to replace the cartridges at home. The best ones are Alpinestars 7x and Off Road. The other offerings from alpinestars (tech air 10, 5, 3) need to be sent back to the factory every time there’s a deployment and it costs close to $300, aside from the down time. I ended up choosing the off road for 2 reason, it comes with chest, shoulder, elbow protection, and 3 ride modes (street, enduro, rally), while the 7x only has street and race modes, so you can’t use it off road.
Helites don’t cover shoulders and I don’t think their system is as good as Alpinestars with all their race experience. Having said that, 5:11 I also just ordered the new Helite Backpack. Not as protective as the Alpinestars, but way more practical, so I will never have an excuse to ride without an airbag, even on short rides.
I hope you get better soon and make a comprehensive video testing all airbags available since there’s currently none.
That is some great information. I don’t ride off road anymore, so I don’t know if that changes things. The Alpine stars 7X looks great to me other than the tailpiece that may affect riding the motorcycle upright and not in race mode.
I ride a Desert X and the 7x tail piece didn’t bother me. It didn’t stick much out of my Klim Baja jacket, maybe 1/3”.
I’ve the Dainese air bag jacket since one year and i can’t go for a ride without …now it’s a reflex
Let me know how you like it and what kind of coverage it offers you.
@@RemboUSMC it is worn like a vest and generally I put it under my motorcycle clothes. Wearing a vest frees me from the back protector and having already been lucky enough to have been protected during a trip on the circuit, I escaped with a small headache and an aspirin... despite the number of rollovers that I did... Nothing on the arm, nothing on the shoulder, nothing on the back and nothing on the ribs... I was probably lucky but in any case the airbag reduced the part of luck in my accident
I had a broken clavicle, 7 fractured ribs and punctured lung. The first three weeks were awful! This happened a year ago, so I'm also looking for a vest
Well, looks like you and I will both have some things in common and certainly will be wearing vests in the future
Check Rev'it vest, it's exactly like Alpinestar but the fabric is mesh, get better bro..... cheers V!
I'll check it out
@@RemboUSMC just tried the rev it at their denver store, very nice its actually a tech air 5 but their own version / collab
Currently shopping all options. Not an easy decision.
There are quite a few to choose from, I’m looking for whatever has the best coverage and the best algorithm to ensure that it deploy on a low side
@@RemboUSMC exactly. Also , some you can just recharge yourself
after deployment (Helite) and some you have to send back to manufacturer for a fee (Dainese). Some are under jacket and some over. A* is under jacket and Eturtle is over.
I have the Helite tethered Airbag vest
As someone who has had many surgeries, start physical therapy as soon as the doctors clear you. It's very important!
This Friday at 4pm I start.
Glad you are healing. That low side came out of nowhere.
Maybe I missed it in the video but were you wearing regular armor (back / shoulder / elbow protectors in jacket, hip and knee in pants)?
I was wearing motorcycle jeans, but didn’t have the pad in the hip which I regret. I had a REAX jacket with full armor, including a full back plate.
I haven't hit my head, but I can't tell if it's 2022, 2023, or 2024 either. :)
LOL Frankie, LOL
Yet another video to remind me of why, after a broken arm 6 weeks ago, I retired from motorcycling permanently. Not worth it.
Understandable
Glad you’re on the mend Rembo. Did your jacket have a back protector in?
Yes, I had a full back plate that I installed in the jacket
Can we see what upper body gear you were wearing?
REAX jacket with backplate, gloves, helmet as you can see and motorcycle jeans.
im in moab on my RS multi, wearing a klim badlands suit and a tech air 5 underneath, cant do it man its so hot to wear , i know i know but id rather drive a car at that point, took it off threw it in my buddied top case and felt so good with just the klim suit , idk maybe ill try a turtle but no way will i wear this vest in 85 degree weather its not fun at all
Makes it difficult here in Florida to wear one all year-round, but I think I’ll just ride less and not ride without one anymore
@@RemboUSMC yeah, understand. I'm going to look at other options. The tech air is sweltering. Or maybe a lighter jacket over it.
KLIM ai-1 will learn after every incident and update their software accordingly. If you purchase Alpinestars or Dainese, there is no learning period.
Interesting information
Were you wearing an air bag vest ?
No. Unfortunately not.
Can you tell us exactly what gear / brands you had on?
The helmet you see is an AGV - K6. I had on gloves that you could see in the video, my jacket was an REAX with a full back plate from Alpine stars. I had writing jeans on that worked well.
@@RemboUSMC thank you, I use a k6 it's light
Most of these vest have not spoken to trauma medics who ride there glaring errors in many designs
You know that’s a very interesting conversation to have. I wonder how much of the medical community was incorporated into the design of these airbag vests.
Not when I spoke to a major manufacturer they said their scientist didn’t feel it was necessary to protect the cervical spine
I think this is a conversation off line as I do not wish to name any brands
Drink milk....
That has the opposite effect actually. Milk is so acidic that it draws the calcium out of your bones. Countries with the highest amount of dairy consumption also have the highest incidence of osteoporosis in women and pelvic fractures in men.
