Everyone is now running off to see if their breather is connected now
Do it!!! 🤣
Hahaha. I just did it. 🤣
Same here.
Don't know much about them, but going to have a look to see if it's possible to add a long pneumatic line to it and a breather. Like you do for your diff breathers.
Though you do get diff breather kits that are for your diffs (2) as well as transfer case and gearbox.
Deadset done my clutch today and it was off😂
@@AussieArvos thing wrong with the 80,, is the 90 kw.. there a dinosaur engine. reliable, but gutless. watch vids on bmw 3.0 tdi. 2012.ish. ditch the butterflies, single turbo, 300 hp..bmw wreck for 3k. cheap engine.auctions. grays, manhiem..
This is why I like manual shifter and manual hubs in my truck
Yeah. What is Toyota thinking. How dare the part break after ONLY 30 years? 🤔
@@HammerRocks its about reliability and fixability, one time is all it takes
@@ryantunstall9572 Yeah. It's so unreliable. It broke down after 30 years of off-road use.
@@HammerRocks
But that one time was when he was stuck in a dangerous situation in the side of a cliff.
That's the problem with electronics.
@@Robert-cu9bm I get what you mean, but a part(s) failing once in 30 years of hard off-road use is not unreliable. Most likely it will still be working if water didn't get in there. I'm sure if the disconnected breather tube was spotted by Pat prior to his trip, this would have been avoided. Speaking from experience, not even military designed parts last this long without breaking (ie. Unimog etc). But you can have the best vehicle prepared ever, and things could still break when used off-road.
Thinking about this a few hours after watching this video. what happen is that when you cleaned the actuator, that smoke you saw was actually a short circuit that cooked the main relay for the diff lock, it is probably why you had so much of a problem finding out why nothing was working after you fixed the actuator.
Good thing his fuses (which is what I was screaming through this entire video for him to check) blew first right... oh wait....
never, ignore smoke..
Agreed. First though was ‘ef… what did that just cook’. Might be worth throwing a fuse on it….
Someone give this man a medal!
Honestly one of the best 4WDing videos I’ve seen. So great to see the troubleshooting process, slowly eliminating the things it could be until you found the problem(s). Truly keeping to the direction of realistic budget builds, and so awesome to see you fixing a catastrophic failure with a bit of elbow grease and the repair manual and not that much money. Keep it up!
The feeling of self satisfaction and pure joy of getting a job like that done, long outlasts the pain.
Well done fellas.
Thanks mate! Was such a good feeling when that centre diff lock light came on!! 😍👌
@@AussieArvos and I bet you’ll smile each and every time it comes on in the future.👍
Good to see you actually finding the problem and showing us, own an 80 series me self so if it ever happens I know what to do.
That's it mate ! Thank you!!
Nice work boys well thought through. It’s great to see young blokes having a crack and not giving up til it’s sorted, and gaining some valuable skills along the way👍
I had the same problem with my 80 series, im a mechanic, with a bit more knowledge I was able to diagnose that it was the relay and got a wreckers one for $10 !
Massive props to you guys for your method of diagnosing, you definitely got a tricky one ! Both components failing! Well done boys
I am an automotive diesel Mechanic who did his Apprenticeship in the 1970s part of our apprenticeship was rebuilding Starter motors. etc. I recently had one of my sons mates come to me lamenting that his starter had failed and there wasnt one available in our city. I told him to bring it around, half an hour later he was fitting it back to his car and drove off. all his other mates some of them mechanics all said he needed a new starter.... it was in fact a broken wire connector! Sadly we have become a throw away society where it is just easier to buy a new one! parts cost was about 20 cents which I didnt charge him for because I took the connector out of an old orange repco connector grab kit I had for the last three decades and well it was mates rates for the Labor.
Great to see someone repairing rather than throwing away. I've done a couple of alternators over the years, usually $10 instead of $300. Fairly straightforward repair.
What a great watch. Can't stop smiling after seeing you get the new relay in at the end. Good on you for pulling everything apart and trying to repair it first, best way to learn.
Thanks lemons! So glad you enjoyed it mate! It was a mission but got there in the end!!
Man your tenacity in finding the root cause is admirable! Well done
Building up a heavily abused and neglected 80 just now and the center diff lock is one of the many probs that require attention. Thanks for this vid, you have saved me a fair bit of head scratching cause I now have an idea where to start looking when I get to this particular repair. Great vid mate, keep up the good work. Benno
great info guys, so glad sometimes that I went down the poverty pac and just added the GXL features I wanted...lol...
What a great episode! Love the persistence to find the problem and fix the problem in true “have a go” style. 👏
Thanks guys! Really appreciate it! :)
Well done fellas 👏 Great work diagnosing the issue, and being resourceful in getting alternative fixes. So far no issues with my LC80's CDL (touch wood) 🤞
Thanks Fatman!! Good to hear! Cheers :)
Well done Pat! Good on you for persevering !! The only way is through!
Wow what a mission to fix it. Good on you for sticking with it!
Good to see you go through the whole system step by step and resolve your issue.
I priced a new one from Japan for $700 a while back before i started overhauling my driveline and progressively replacing the worn components.
Great vid. Awesome work. Diagnosis is by far the hardest part. Especially with driveline stuff. It sucks but when you finally solve it. Damn it feels good
Good job on repairing it, awesome video of the ups and downs, keep up the good work!
Wel done. Great to see you and your mate working through the problem.
Well done mate! Great to see the process you went through! Awesome video.
Total Respect .... I Drive a GU and i work on it by my self... I know the frustration untill you pin down the exact problem ..
But at the end, a massive knowledge is gained with a massive saving in the pocket.
Awesome work guys!
Just had a similar failure. No breather, deep water, cooked armature.
I found that in the natural unlocked position the actuator is actually about 2 teeth rotation off of hard unlock or 5 turns of the armature (set by the contacts and relay) The little contacts in the actuator tell the relay exactly where the locking mechanism is. By setting it up at hard in the off position when it is later controlled by the relay it may not actually fully dis-engage the transfer. (only by 2 teeth) It could be that it is enough to click it all in/out but that is not the way is was originally setup. The factory manual is terrible at spelling it out simply.
I had to to do my factory diff locks a while back. (very similar motor actuator) and the manual in this diff lock section has a much better explanation of setting up the actuator.
Thanks for taking to the time to make this video.
A serious bit of advice, the gasket goo is not going to seal it properly, use some silicone before you go bush again. Toyota put it on there for a good reason in the factory.
I'm giving this video a like for your resilence and determination in fixing your centre diff lock problem, I was saying to myself early on in the video you need some 3rd world expert mechanic!! Old cars can be very frustrating.
Thanks Luke! Means alot! And yes! Ahha !
Bloody roller-coaster!
Top job getting it back running, you blokes are doing good things. Keep it up
great video buddy! So glad you were able to get back up and running!
Nice work. Such a good feeling when you work through a problem and turn the key and it’s fixed.
I actually have this problem at the moment and this is the most in-depth video i could find on how to fix it.
Awesome work man
Good to see you guys back. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks Brian! Means alot!
great video loved it! glad you got to the root of the issue without just buying a replacement! imagine that was very satisfying.
I love watching your travel/4wding videos but love these workshop videos even more as I also own an 80 series and learning more about them is so good!
What a journey to get this fixed! Kudos for figuring it out and persisting through!
Such a great video - one of your best! Love the persistence guys, great work!
Thanks Aaron! really appreciate it !! Cheers! :)
We’ll done boys!! Good problem solving.
Good on ya’s!!!! Always awesome to watch 🤠👍🏾🍺🍺
just love you guys now i know what I would do if such an issue came up in my 80 series lc
Huge effort! Fantastic job! Very informative! Cheers boys
Thank you!!
Great video mate! keep up the good work
Enjoyed watching. Thanks.
The relay is just a switch and would have been overloaded by the shorted coils, but just in case, check inside. Might be repairable, and if you're lucky, it might even have a fuse. Certainly needs one.
Well done mate...I'm not 80 owner...but I understand what you did and it's a great achievement...it's definitely helpful for a lot of people...you people are awesome
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode going through process of finding the fault. Usually when a motor shorts out it takes other components with it. You have learnt a lot and you gave it a go. Proud of you 👍
Thanks Chris! i really appreciate you saying that mate, it was such a good feeling getting it going again! and great that i learnt alot along the way! and that's whats its all about! thank you! :)
Hey young fella nice to see your interested in repairing and not throwing away. Excellent way to go... just so you know, 'rewinded' is not a word. Try rewound. Keep up the excellent work boys. Cheers
great outcome. alot of times the actuator can get hung up from lack of use as well. a good practise is to engage / disengage when stopped at lights or on a gravel road to keep things moving. Mine was not working for a while however managed to free it up on a gravel road by driving slowly turning the wheel lock to lock. Once it freed up i engaged/disengaged numerous times and its been fine ever since.
*Kudos, nice application of patience & diagnostic skills/procedures* 👍
great video ! througly enjoyed all the technicals ! great to learn the unexpected mechanical issues of your vehicle ! . so next time if it happens or to someone else out on the tracks u'll know what it is ..
Well done mate, I didn't know any of this and it's good to know when out bush! I'll go check mine now aha
What a wild ride! So glad that you found a solution to your problem
I had the same issue! So I also pulled my actuator apart! And fixed the problem! I always find an answer!
That was epic, well done for seeing it through.
Good job mate. I have to admire your tenacity and determination to get to the root of the problem/s. Great problem solving skills. 😊👍👍
Well done for getting it sorted!!
Try a reputable shop to rewind the armature.
I live in South Africa, we do repairs here too.
Watched the rest, and kudos to you for thinking of repair rather than replacing the old part.
If you still have the Paj why not swop the transfer case to the 80? The gearbox in the Paj is a Toyota unit and the transfer case should bolt right up.
Great job fellas
You stuck to it and nutted it out
Your diagnosis skills are second to none !
Great Video ! Well Done !
Superb effort on the diagnosis and eventual resolution.. well done.
Great work on finding the problem mate. There will always be something that needs attention on your 4x4. That is why we have them to I reckon. Keep us tinkering. Enjoy now and cheers 🍻
Well done boys for solving the problem
This episode was epic! Glad you got it sorted in the end
this was a good video. Very much enjoyed it.
Wow thanks for this, fantastic work Sherlock
Herb just bought a bigger house. Lol.
We need more Herbs in the world. Great channel fellas.
🤟☮️😎👍
awesome video guys ..and omg what a mission .....well done trying to fix stuff yourself very handy to know how to fix stuff on your 4wd image a mechanic labour doin it omg ... big thumbs up guys
Really enjoyed this episode, good job!
I will now check that all the tubes on my breathers are still connected. 😃 Well done in being able to sort it out cheaper. 👍👌
Loved you highlighting the Manual so we knew what you were speaking about!
Thanks Sam! Really glad you noticed! I appreciate it! glad it helped!!
Ditto. I appreciate the workshop manual illustrations.
Well done, your very persistent and detailed. My 100 series has a similar problem I've changed the actuater but still no light. The cdl will engage when placed under load ie going over sand. So the mechanic is getting it next well. He feels it might be wiring so you hint on the relay may be helpful. Keep up the good work, and I love your philosophical suggestions
Great video! Very inspirational part about the throwaway mentality of the 21st century.
this is the main reason i love the patrols, so much less to go wrong than the motors and drivelines in the 80s. no timing belt, no electric components in the 4wd system
regardless, solid effort figuring it out mate. i would’ve been pulling hair out 😂
The pov pack 80s have a normal transfer case with hubs
And so does the 105 series.
Well done.. you are gaining the groundwork to qualify towards Land Rover ownership..
Well done on sorting that out. It's always tough work when you have a number of contributing factors. I had a similar issue once where the actuator got installed out of time and it took me a while to work out why.
Wow that was a challenge. Well done!
Good to see you got it sorted. My 80 had the CDL go, turned out to be a dodgy connection on the switch under the car (that one that activates the light), and dodgy connection on the relay. But it was petrol, so it had electronics everywhere anyway.
Great video, really admire your persistence 👏
Well done lads. Appreciate the good info.
My 105 series CDL actuator armature was cooked as well, I purchased a unit direct from Japan, it cost me $650 aud and took about 4 weeks to arrive. It fixed my problem instantly, I could have used this video about 2 months ago 😂
Cool video mate. It kind of reminds me of the early days of MCM. Good content… Keep it up!
A great lesson on fault finding and perseverance mate
This video gave me anxiety, reminded me of all the times I couldn't fix something and was running out of ideas/money. Well done for persevering and getting it fixed.
Fantastic video guys!
Awesome job working out the problem lads ✌️
Nice work guys 👍
It is that kind of persistence that makes the unachievable - magically achievable.
Respect for doing a good job! 👍
Well, you definitely learnt something. Will be more valuable than you realise. Well done for the problem solving process and sharing your knowledge :)
You did well fixing that yourselves guy's well done.
As an 80 (full time 4wd) owner.....great stuff Patrick!
Well done guys!
you can always do a part time conversion, I believe Marlin Crawler sells the part
Great DIY video... Thanks...
time for a part time kit..? great vid. props for digging deep into the issue and not just throwing money and parts at it.
Awesome video!
Well done, many including myself would have given up and gone to a mechanic. You saved a lot of $ and gained some useful knowledge
Thanks Paul! That really means a lot mate! appreciate it! :)
Great work Pat.
Color me impressed! I’m mean damn! I know you guys are handy around 4x4s but that was amazing! These type of videos really
Inspire me to work on my own car!
Those sensors can be fixed sometimes by holding them closed and shorting the two terminals on a 12v battery in short bursts, the idea being that the heat build up helps remove the glaze that forms on the contacts over time. It worked wonders on my two faulty gearbox switches.
OMG Patrick! You have found a God! I had same issue with my heater blower motor and new one costs over $300. It was over heated because water had gotten inside like yours and eventually enamel of coil were burnt and shorted.
I watched same RUclips videos about repairing electric motors! I actually fully dismantled and removed all the coil measured length and leant pattern how to wind step by step from youtube. I bought coil from Electric hobby shop but in the end I did not succeed! I installed cheap ebay blower motor which is noisy but works better. Ended up spending about $300,,,,,,, I wish I can send my truck to those country with super skilled people so they can repair them all! Luckily my diff lock is mechanically operated ;-) LR Defender 300TDI! Oh no I just heard he is over 70???? Can you go learn everything from him? No much time left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????????
Good one you ! You have fixed! Brain power ! And Power of internet!
It happened with Holden Frontera. But It was electronics issue. It happened when I power washed under the car. I dislike car with computer!
epic, well done!
#44 on Trending! Awesome!
Well done for sticking to it and getting her done! The wealth of knowledge that comes from doing these things yourself will help you in life. Did you pull the old relay apart and repair it to try to recoup some money?
Wicked video mate, herb is going to get loaded with work now Brother, keep it up
