The fact they were BOTH within a mile radius of a "cash for gold" store proves she wanted nothing but to take advantage. And seals it that she still has the items even in a box.

My great-grandma who is 97 would not fall for this type of scam. She keeps up with the current event and socials. She might be an exception to people around her age. If it were real gold, the scammer can sell it to the jewelry store or pawn it himself. That's a RED flag.

This scam takes 2 greedy parties to tango. The people that take the gold think they are taking advantage of the “stranded” person. She didn’t think to take down info because she had no intention of returning the jewelry.

Exactly! This happened to me. I was greedy & thought I took advantage of the family. When I got back to work my coworkers & I even laughed about me taking advantage of them. I didn’t realize the gold was fake till it started to turn. That’s what I get. Heart in the right place my foot. I wouldn’t have gave them more than $20 till I saw that gold & that little old lady was the same way. This scam told me something about myself. I’m ashamed. Not cause I fell for it. Because I’m no better than the people doing the scam. In fact I’m worse. God help me

I was just sitting here, trying to compose a way of saying, delicately, exactly what you said, this is greed and the persons that get scammed kinda deserve it, with this particular scam because the mark thinks they've scored a win fall and can take advantage of circumstances and I know it's a sweat older woman, but she would not have gone to the ATM and given away 400 bucks without first believing that she had 4k in valuables, to begin with.

Seems to me that if they're rich they have lots of fallback options-other rich friends and relatives. They don't need to ask complete strangers for help. So the logic fails right from the start. If some disaster happened to me traveling, I'd report it to law enforcement who would probably refer me to a traveler's assistance program, if a big city, or a church, if a rural area.

Most of the time, people allow themselves to be scammed out of their own greed. They often think they are taking advantage of a situation, and end up being taken for a ride. I don’t like that they took advantage of this elderly woman, though. I do think her heart was in the right place.

I don't think pawnshops take items without an ID, and supposedly their wallet was stolen? Pawnshops have to comply with laws because people use them to dispose of illegally obtained items. Law enforcement can trace unique items that are the fruits of a crime because they've had to produce ID and a fingerprint, at least in my state.

This was very similar to a scam I almost got involved in here in Beaverton, Oregon, off HWY 26. On the entrance ramp, this guy was waving, spoke broken English, told me he lost his wallet, ran out of gas, had his kids and brother In the car, (sitting idle a few yards away) and had to get back to California so I picked up the guy. He looked Arabic. We drove to an ATM. I was going to give him $100 for one necklace, but he said he needed more like $500. But since I didn't know if the rings were worth anything, at that point, I only offered to then take him to a local gold dealer where he could get more cash. He then said no, that would not work. Then he just suddenly left my car and took off.

The bible says it's *better* to be cheated, than to be a cheater'. Just give your money to someone in need without them asking, that way you won't feel stupid, or stingy, or racist, or insensitive!

The scam happens everywhere and it can happen to anybody. This happened to me at a gas station in Atlanta. I was just about to leave the gas station and this man pulled up next to my car saying he needed gas and started taking off jewelry saying it was expensive and and he needed cash and he would give me the jewelry in exchange. He kept talking really fast and spoke with an accent. Luckily I had seen videos on RUclips about this scam so I wasn't fooled. They try to get you to put your judgment aside and let down your guard.
