He does a damn good Nero in Devil May Cry- but he's just a damn good every voice lol. I wouldn't have known that he did Adachi as well previously but he makes it work really well for the parallels. If they ever try to make a remake in the same vain as P3R, I honestly hope they keep the same English dub voices. They don't have any drama as bad as Junpei's voice actor did, so hopefully Yukiko's actor keeps it in check for the cast to keep their roles. While Teddie's replacement voice actor isn't all that different, I couldn't bear thinking about Chie getting a 3rd voice just for the English games lol
@@littleguystar Amanda Winn-Lee (Yukiko's voice actress) supported Putin. On the possibility they'll actually keep the voice actors but still switch others, there's no way she'll maintain her spot. The same thing happens with Makoto Yuki, in the movies he has a very good development and complexity as a character, but being in the game a character to which you give your personality all that is lost, I would like Atlus to find the balance of making a silent character with development in some way.
I’d like to politely disagree with the latter. In my opinion, Atlus does a pretty good job at integrating personalities into the silent protagonists via dialogue options, idle actions and animation during cutscenes. I do agree though that going forward we should see *more* personality from silent characters or just have future main characters outright talk depending on which dialogue option you pick (like in the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio)
Not really the third dialogue options in the persona games are more life less and they don’t show any emotion however as you go on the choices make you feel more involved in the game
Beautifully done, persona 4 the animation will always hold a special place in my heart because that’s what go me into persona and Smt as a whole. Thank you for giving me the chance to see that
I like how each game gives the MCs a personality, but it’s up to the player to make the right choices within that mentality. Naoya is awkward, but honest and kind. Tatsuya is naive but tough and old fashioned. Maya is clumsy but has a good mentality. Minato/Makoto is rude but stoic, Yu is a little too confident & outgoing at times. Ren is a dork with a flair for theatrics. Each protag has flaws that are in line with their character, and the message of each game reflects how they grow up. Naoya quits being so reclusive Tatsuya grows into the man he wanted to be Maya becomes a more mature woman Minato starts showing more affection for others Yu becomes more chill and learns when to tone it down. Ren actually does the opposite of most of them, and becomes more eccentric and showy.
I think something interesting that could've been explored with Ren is the idea that his theatrics is just a part an act. A facade that he puts on to distract others and mask his pain over his situation. It would fit his original Persona Arsene, who's a gentleman thief who puts on a theatrical show to entertain others, but is ultimately putting himself at risk for his sense of justice. Think about it with the casino scene. Once you go through the game and have the full context behind the situation, you realize that Ren's life is in massive danger and yet he's smiling, taunting the police and putting on a performance. It would've made for a more interesting protagonist and there's a lot you could do for his relationship with the other characters, especially Akechi, who is his foil. It would've been interesting for Akechi to spout on and on about how Ren couldn't understand him because he puts on an act to be accepted, but then show how Ren would ABSOLUTELY be able to understand him. I would've loved it if his character by the end of the story is that he's still very theatrical, but it's now out of a genuine sense of confidence rather than using it as a mask.
There's also a really good moment in the P4 Manga that characterizes Narukami further and shows why he cares so much about Nakako There's a flashback showing that he was a lonely child, their parents left him alone in the house a lot of times and they praised his maturity, but in reality he was sad and lonely and he does not want Nanako to go through this awful experience, that's why he wants to always be by her side, he understands her feelings of loneliness
The anime is sooo good, completely agree that it's one of the best adaptations ever! The way they took the lunatic options from the game and then spun them into Yu's off the wall personality was so funny and well done. I love that you pointed out that we can still get personality traits off the silent protags just based off their interactions with things, that's one of my favorite parts of a silent protagonist.
I just finished both the game and the anime a few days ago and i'm so glad that they decided to make Narukami his own character in the anime and you describe perfectly why it was an amazing choice, nice analysis!
Narukami is my favourite character in all fiction. The anime fleshed him out so perfect. Even in the manga he's just as good. And it makes games like P4AU even better since we get to see his character development. Here's hoping Atlus stops making protagonists silent, feel like the stories are so much more interesting when the protagonists are actual characters and not just silent.
I think it's better when the protagonists are silent in the games, because it feels like your the one interacting with the characters around you. Part of the reason P4G is so good is because it plops you in the place of Yu Narukami. If they were to make him his own character and fleshed out inside the game, it feels more immersive, as you feel like you ARE yu narukami. But in the spin-offs and animes that you can play/watch after you finish the main game, seeing Narukami as his own character rather than you (the player) its really cool. It's like a whole new character you get to see, plopped in with the rest of the original P4 cast. What im saying pretty much is, the protaganist being a blank slate in the games, but a fleshed out character in the spin-offs, anime, manga etc works better due to being like a whole new character almost. Altho I do think your onto something, the story could be more interesting, but it would also take away something that makes Persona what it is.
@SkittleWave Feels like Naoya and Makoto were the only protagonist that felt like being silent was a part of there character. But they very clearly wanted characters like Tatsuya, Maya, Narukami and Joker to have personalities. So I'm guessing they're sticking to them being silent just for the sake of it at this rate.
@@silvershudo7093 It's funny, because Joker is barely silent in Persona5. He talks a lot in the animated cutscenes, battles, and even doing normal stuff like ranking up a social stat or going batting at the batting cages. It feels like the only point where he's actually silent is the dialogue options themselves, XD
Unlike Yuki Makoto whose past is tragic and makes him an edgy loner, Yu's past is mundane, lonely, and empty. Not only are his parents too busy with their jobs, but Yu has made no connection with his past classmate in the anime version.
After the Shadow Mitsuo fight, the gang celebrates with eating watermelon and that episode ended with Yu and Yosuke calling each other without any suffixes like -san. In Japan, this is a big deal as this is only done with family or very close friends. This moment cemented that Yu and Yosuke had become best friends, and is my favourite moment in the anime.
I’m glad the anime sometimes does a better job of portraying the themes. After you deal with mitsuo in the game, you just do nothing but spend time with ur friends for a whole month until naoto shows up This is also true with p3’s anime after a certain someone dies the whole team starts doubting if they can stop * * * and regress downwards. I hope in the future we get to see the group again after the events of p4g even if it’s just in a spinoff game and without the dub VAs
Hot take but they should just make all persona protagonists forward have dialogue in the games, occasionally giving you dialogue choices that are also voiced. While atlus does a good job at giving a good idea of what their character should be even when silent, playing series like final fantasy, trails, etc, will make you realize just how much character you're actually missing out on, a character that you can only get from watching the anime experience.
I think making it anime-exclusive is a really cool experience. Like it gives you something to look forward to after playing the game. I was ngl… pretty sad after finishing Persona 4 Golden but having the anime with not-silent Yu Narukami felt fresh and exciting.
After playing P4 I learned to make friends and those friends are all in my PS2. I am sure everyone in the comments and on Reddit would agree we all have friends bc of P4
Amazing video !! This really made me think about how valuable adaptations can be. This perspective of the story is not possible in the games and thats just so cool!! I feel the anime knew exactly what it needed to change to tell the same story but at the same time change everything.
I’m on the opposite end of your spectrum. I like the self insert with little explained, things implied between the lines, and your interactions throughout your specific gameplay making the personality. But there are things I like in the anime that were done well.
personally i'm tired of getting silent protagonists in these games when we've had multiple examples that prove they're far more interesting when they're allowed to be actual characters instead of self inserts for the people playing as them. both the P3 movies and P4 anime are the examples i'm referring to.
Then stop playing them. These games aren't supposed to have the Personality of the character. Hell, the Anime was created SPECIFICALLY to show how he's supposed to be Contextually played as. But, you don't HAVE to play as them. Especially because in the Anime they use specific Personas. Like, Makoto Yuki uses Sarasvati in the Movies during the Fuuka rescue mission. When in the game you don't get access to that persona until your level is at 32 at the most. Or, you're on NG+
Full hard disagree. Controlling a player-character with a specific character type sometimes takes me out of the role-play element. For example, I'm the timid non-confrontational defensive and closed off type. I will pick timid sounding choices and be more receptive interacting to confident and louder characters. If I'm given an abrasive, confrontational, "i hate everyone i meet" player-character I get a disconnect especially when there are no choices that make them stop being so abrasive. I dont want my choices to be A. Yes (Flirt) B. Yes (Flirt), C. Yes (Flirt), D. Flirt!
