You won't find a bigger re zero fan than me, as it is my favorite story that I have ever experienced but that doesn't mean I don't have problems with re zero. Its pretty clear that Nagatsuki-sensei is at the very least somewhat interested in lolicon and that's uncomfortable and to the detriment of Re zero's reach. It shows in some of the designs like Lilianna and Capella. And the creepy jokes about the mayor being attracted to Lilliana is not funny, just gross. Their designs are so out of place in a story that takes its writing very seriously. I ultimately can chalk this up as anime bs and just go along loving re zero but most non anime fans will be put off by this. I wonder if Nagatsuki-sensei is too blinded by otaku norms or his own fetishes to realize that his story is too special and compelling to risk losing so many potential fans. That would be my number one criticism. A good portion of characters revealed in arc 5 and onward have designs that amount to a bikini which is just lazy and utterly pandering to otaku. Are the lessons Subaru learned about relying on and believing in Emilia's strength and capability and respecting her autonomy something that Nagatsuki-sensei even truly believes? The whole point of re zero is to criticize how otaku see the world and themselves yet these designs directly contradict those themes. Its very unfortunate.

Re:Zero still my top anime every since I watched it in 2016 and am waiting for it to return this February. Many anime just can't capture both the fantasy and realistic and psychological aspect of Re:Zero of an average dude fighting to survive in a fantasy world yet somehow surpassing the odds. my main criticism with rezero is that Emilia fucking sucks and is insufferable. She drags Subaru into situations that break his mind, and her naivety and ignorance is never punished by the narrative. She never loses a limb, her deaths are swift and not drawn out, and she is unworthy of becoming the queen of millions of people.

Bruh 90% of MAL reviews are walls of text critiquing the most minor things that the reviewer just hallucinated into existence because they don't actually exist in the show.

Really enjoying your content on Persona. Akechi is one of my favorite characters in the franchise, and I think you better enunciated why I like Akechi and think he's an interesting character than I could. Whether Akechi is romantically interested in Joker or if it's platonic I don't think isn't super important in the end. The close bond and love that was formed plays out the same.

Haha, I often come across videos like these on my recommendations or when reading certain Reddit reviews about various series. It's disappointing how many of these "reviews" are shallow and unhelpful, making you wonder if the reviewers even watched the show. Maybe they're just rage baiting or chasing engagement, but it's hard to believe someone would write a long, hateful review purely for imaginary internet points. If you're looking for fair and honest critiques, it's best to seek out fans of the series itself. At least then, you can reasonably expect they've taken the time to understand the story-hopefully!

Another good video. Thank you for these. Not to repeat myself from my comment on the other video, but as a Persona fan and someone who has had long term MDD I think you covered Kotone well. I agree with your take on gender. (In general) Men are expected to be more reserved in showing emotion outside of maybe anger, and women have an expedition of being friendly and emotionally available. I think that commonly those societal influences influence how people deal with depression as well. How people express and manifest depression can also vary in different circumstances and points of life. I feel like sometimes, especially when I was younger I leaned more towards Kotone and later more towards Makoto. Both expressions can happen regularly of gender, and men could have a 'smile' presentation more on the lines of expressing traditional masculinity, humor, or many other ways too. It's much like people such as Robin Williams often was outwardly happy, friendly, and warm to most who knew him but he deeply struggled inside. I'll also mention that people like Katone and Robin aren't 'faking' those positive parts of their personalities as some people may suggest - I think it's more that they lean into those parts of themselves more than that's healthy to mask or cope with their inner struggles. Again, my opinion based on personal experience (and years of therapy). I'm not a psychologist. I can also relate to the conflicting need to want to find genuine connections and escape loneliness, while also grappling with the intense negative emotions and internalized low self esteem and pushing people away. I think the musical number you referenced was a good example of that and I find it completely believable that Kotone in that moment both wanted to connect with Yukari for a genuine connection as well as pull away from her, feeling it would be painful or difficult to handle being open with her, possibly fearing rejection or abandonment. Another random thought I had recently - a lot of people criticize Kotone's social link with Ken. I think that's understandable why. Although if Kotone struggles to connect with others but finds she is making a connection with Ken is more easy, I can see how she may lean into that and hold onto that connection, even if it may not be the most ideal or healthiest relationship. So while it's kind of uncomfortable seeing that relationship, I can see why that social link is plays out in a bit uncomfortable way. (Although also to be honest I don't remember much about that social link; I probably should watch a video on it sometime)

Good video. I agree that people who think that Kotone doesn't fit P3 aren't looking at her beyond a surface level, and she very much fits Persona 3. As someone who has dealt with Depression for a large part of my life it's easy for me to recognize what Atlus was going for with Kotone, but people less familiar with Depression may miss it if they don't look beyond the surface level. This is a shame because while there are stereotypes and ideas of how depressed people should act and behave, it's not universal. Like "smiling depression" some people still behave upbeat, outgoing, friendly, and social, but they are still struggling with the feelings that most depressed people do, such as the feelings of hopelessness, poor self-esteem, loneliness, etc. The description at 1:38 overviews that well. Some people also behave outwardly in ways to mask their turbulent feelings or in attempts to fake-it-to-make-it or out of desperation to break free of their constant depressed mood (like you mentioned). I've seen this in others myself. While Kotone does change the tone of P3 on the surface, she still very much stays true to the themes of the game. I think a lot of Kotone's dialog and interactions with others shows this. I am glad these parts of depression are represented because I think it not only makes Kotone an interesting character but brings awareness to the different forms depression takes - which may all look very different on the surface, but just as impactful, important, and serious. Speaking personally, I think that being depressed can sometimes put you in the mindset of "I'll do this to help others. It doesn't matter if I get hurt. If other people's lives are better, it'll be worth it. It'll be worth my hurt," It's a sense of selflessness, but not a particularly healthy one. I personally call it a "I'd jump into traffic to push you out of the way of a moving car, even if I die." feeling, for a lack of a better more concise term. Part of it may be projecting, but I can see that in Kotone (and Makoto), and them picking up the evoker and shooting themselves is their "jumping into traffic" moment. She is faced with an insane situation and doesn't hesitate to put what she thinks is a real gun to her head and pull the trigger because she thinks it will help others.
