The point from the executive class is to make progressives look bad by giving conservatives something bad to point at and say "see, this is what woke ideas give us". The executives at Disney don't care if Trump wins because if he does he's already promised them as a wealth class *massive* tax breaks.

Most of them are at their positions due to political opinions and DEI, not because of their talent. As hacks (KK and Filoni included) they are unable to judge quality. One thing that bothers me about Disney Star Wars that isn’t discussed much is how strangely amoral it feels. Lucas Star Wars always had a clear moral theme and the new stuff either seems to step on it or ignore it. In the OT it’s clearly shown using anger for power is wrong (most clearly when Luke beats Vader with it but then tosses his saber to reject the emperor ion ROTJ) and the good guys win through their friendship, but in ST Rey uses rage in most of her fights and never suffers from it as though it’s a good thing that she just angrily overpowers everyone. In the OT Han Solo shows maturity before he gets into a relationship with Leia as he needed to grow up and have some values, whereas in the acolyte Osha is attracted to the murderous and manipulative Qimir and it’s portrayed as a fulfilling event. It’s just bizarre, it’s like the writers are snarking portraying themselves as more moral than the original creators through hamfisted politics and vapid diversity but the actual core message their stuff gets across is the opposite.

    • @PhilippeC-o1f
      @PhilippeC-o1f 3 месяца назад

In Disney Star Wars, all men are portrayed as week, mostly useless and in need of feminine guidance, always. To the point where a Jedi Master, former general, war hero and council member, need a ten years old girl to tell him what to do😮‍💨. So, women should be portrayed as super beings by comparison but instead, they are shown to be murderous, lying, disloyal, manipulative and treacherous, but they are still the heroes of the story and all their actions are justified. So yeah, it's clear that the persons that make this kind of story are highly immoral people.

    • @Valen-mh9fh
      @Valen-mh9fh 3 месяца назад +13

I don't think they understand SW.
For example, making Qimir/Osha the 'misunderstood' heroes is silly as the goal of the Sith ideology is dictatorship and space-fascism i.e., what the Empire is in the OT.
Disney seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Jedi and Sith are meant to represent. Or they get it and the writers have questionable morals. 😅

There's been a long running natural cycle in entertainment that swings back and forth between stories of clear black/white morality and morally gray. However some where along the line we transitioned to just the acceptance of immorality.
Somehow people can't distinguish with characters being the hero of their own story and being actually heroic.

I think you just summed up why I really never got into Andor. I know it's a more realistic look at how rebellions work, but I really didn't feel like there was a good dude to root for. Sure the Empire did horrible things in the show, but it was in response to borderline terrorist activities. Saw, Luthen, and Andor are all fairly self serving and only work together because of a shared hatred. Jen Erso says rebellions are built on hope, but all Andor shows is that rebellions are built on hate and a desire to shift power.

What frustrates me most about the people defending disney star wars isn't that they like something I don't. They have every right to enjoy somewhat mediocre to outright bad writing just used as a vehicle to drive pretty looking fight scenes. I have my guilty pleasures too. A lot of people don't admit that is all they care about in star wars, the ones that do are relatively rare and I tend to actually respect those people.
It is the people that try and act like I am a bad person for wanting well written, compelling stories with coherent lore in a francise I have loved for as long as I have had conscious thoughts that I have an issue with. The acolyte seems to draw this kind of person in so specifically for whatever reason.

But, that's the trick, Fictional character's DON'T have a will of their own because they are fake. It's up to the storyteller to TRICK the audience's perception of disbelief into believing what they are seeing or hearing could plausibly be real people. In order to do that, I think one needs to be able to think a lot like other people, and have a basic sense of empathy.
But modern writers like Leslie Headland are so far up their own gender fluid posterior that all they can see is themselves in everything else.

The biggest and most glaring reshoot is the tracker rat ripping out the space ship wiring.

I realize the most writers/directors take inspiration from other places; characters in books, movies, TV, etc. But the more that we hear about Headland's inspirations, all she talks about is taking them from other things she has seen. It's like she can't have a new thought of her own. Yord was a AD&D character, for example. That makes sense on so many levels, from his AD&D name 'Yord' to the way he acted. As one who played AD&D for years (and was a DM for much of it) I can say with nearly complete certainty that Yord was a Paladin. I had friends who HATED paladins and always wanted to portray them as do goody-goody idiots. I used to drive DMs crazy by mostly playing paladins. But I recognize the biased view of paladins and Yord seemed to fit that stereotype perfectly. Arrogant, stupid, brave but foolhardy. There is nothing wrong with re-imagining AD&D characters into SW, but if that is the depth of your creativity, then perhaps you should find others to write. Putting Yoda into this story-line was an extremely bad idea. He would not agree with making an innocent Jedi look guilty, even to save the order. It's different than when the order let Ahsoka stand trial -- she could defend herself and actually had a trial (and was proven innocent) whereas Sol will eternally be portrayed as a murderer, if Vernestra Rowh tells Yoda the truth and he becomes a party to it. I would think George Lucas wouldn't like Yoda wrongly portrayed. While he has no way to stop them from using Yoda, if he was to go public and speak out against his use, that would be a huge embarrassment to Headland and Kennedy, I would think. Someone needs to speak up, but so many of the 'critics' are gushing over how awesome The Acolyte was, though most of the fans don't agree and the numbers of those who watch concur.

It's not just Episode 4 that dropped out of the top 10: with Luminate's data, the Acolyte is nowhere to be seen for Episodes 7&8, with the lowest show this week pulling in 228 mmw (million minutes watched). That means that the finale to a Star Wars show was irrelevant compared to every other show out there, even with those abysmal numbers. Also, though Andor started slow, I've seen a graph (for the life of me I can't remember where) that showed it gained traction and actually ended its run as the 5th most watched Star Wars series (beating out Ahsoka). The Acolyte is heading right to the bottom, but sadly I don't think even that will wake up Disney. Unless Bob pulls a Willow and is so disgusted with the numbers and costs and just deletes it from D+, which, while unlikely, would be hilarious.

I’ve tried to be optimistic about Star Wars, but starting last year especially I’ve started to lose hope. I was so excited about the Acolyte, I remember on one of ur polls (I think) I voted it as the Star Wars show I was most excited for- I got into the High Republic books so that I’d have some understanding for the setting of the Acolyte, and I thought “this is gonna be so cool, I’ve been wondering what the Sith were up to rn”, but then the show came out and although it’s got good moments, it just that MOMENTS. I feel like this franchise is dying, and it makes me so sad, I’ve seen all the movies in the theatres (rereleases for the OT and prequels), watched TCW when it was on Netflix, i remember trying to find a way to watch Twilight of the Apprentice. Idk, all the sw content I’m rewatching/rereading nowadays is TCW, Rebels and Timothy Zahn’s newer Thrawn books

The damage that this series has done has been enough for me to walk out of Disney EU for good (as I'm sure it has for others) and actually return back to the original EU. Some will say that The Last Jedi was the beginning of the end, but Season 3 Mandalorian really eroded it. I think some people were hoping that Disney would quietly retcon or redo the sequel trilogy to fix the problems (It was discussed), but that wasn't going to happen. Instead, they're doubling down on Episode 10, which might turn out to be Indy 5 or the Willow series.
In fairness, I enjoyed SW Rebels and Bad Batch for their simple storytelling and for being mostly consistent with their stories/lore. Rogue One is still very good. But I don't picture Disney going back and admitting that they made a mistake with the Acolyte. Instead, they'll likely double down on it. It's now going to become a question of how much longer it will be before Disney sells off the franchise, seeing that it's not getting them anywhere. It's just burning their money up unless that's what they want.

As someone who watched The Acolyte, I give it a 6/10. It's not the best show, it's definitely not the worst. Fights look cool, story is awful. Some characters are cool, the two main characters are awful. It's the definition of a mid show for me. And that made me wonder why Disney decided to release The Acolyte when they did. This week alone, I watched the final episode of The Boys S4, this week's House of the Dragon episode and the first part of Cobra Kai's final season. Why did they release this at the exact same time as especially the first two shows? You're not going to beat those, especially not with a product like this. There have been instances where movies have been rescheduled to make sure the competition wasn't too big, even if I can't think of any examples right now I vaguely remember there being at least one Marvel/DC example, why weren't they smart enough to pull something like this with this show? It might have saved some of the streaming numbers.

With a few exceptions (Rogue One, Andor [via a friend]) the Disney era just hasn't matched the quality of story telling of what came before and where they have succeeded (see above) it is because the boundaries are already clearly drawn. Such a shame.

I couldn't even get through the first episode, however. Rosario Dawson's fight choreography is awkward, slow, clunky and not believable, and then there is just a parade of feeemale lead characters aside from him, Ahsoka, Hera, Sabine, Nightsister Lady... 🙄 🤢
Then they're searching for a Map McGuffin (where have I seen this plot point before?)

There are people who are so easy to entertain thanks to lightsaber duels. The problem with the Acolyte is how the lightsabers weren't touched up with FX and looked like the LED toys that they are. Choreography was laughable with telegraphed dodges and swings. Inconsistent skills and usage of the Force. And most of all, it tried to outclass the Prequel duels instead of being inspired by them.

This show sucked so badly. I really wanted to like it as I’m a big fan of all things Star Wars content. Thor, how about you rewrite this story and share it with us like your old “what if” videos? I think you put a great story together on what could have been. Love your content man and you are right on target with your commentary. Osha killing Sol for me was probably one of the most ridiculous things to happen. He was heartbroken and I honestly didn’t see him make a huge mistake besides not telling her about killing her mother who was turning into a smoke monster. Venstra was a terribly written character. Dang it I could go on and on!

But as the years have gone on since Disney took over the franchise, I became less and less interested to the point where no I haven’t watched the Acolyte and I don’t plan on ever watching it, I don’t buy memorabilia or collectables anymore and I don’t watch the movies/shows on rerun and spend any other free time I have watching RUclips videos or talking to people about it. Sol died because he struggled with the English language. He couldn’t explain things with enough clarity and thoroughly. Who knew a Force choke is a way to kill a Jedi without a weapon? Nobody was predicting this prior to when it happened.
I would read stuff from Reddit and I’m surprised a number of people enjoyed The Acolyte. Even giving it a score of 8.5/10. I’ve seen it being ranked as the 3rd best SW on Disney+ behind Andor and The Mandalorian. Not for me but more power (of Manny) to them. Toxic reviewers who rage bait divides people.
It’s Saturday morning and we’re still talking about The Acolyte. Maybe over time, it will get appreciated more? Prequels were the perfect example of “I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it." Maybe in 20-25 years, people will look at some of the Disney Star Wars a little more fondly?

I’ve never seen Dune 2 and don’t have any urge to. I know that’s what most people will put at No. 1. I found the first one way too bland. As Maggie from deepfocuslens said, she finds these Dune movies very sterile. Extremely slow and boring.
The Acolyte might be dead last, but I do think it’s overHATED. Some of the undeserved hatred comes from not only review bombing but people who’ve never seen it. They just parrot what other people say about it and go along with them.
Going to rewatch Fly Me to the Moon a third time in the theater. I’m not into rom-coms, but this one I first saw the other day after watching Twisters, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the vibe it brings and the 1969 look. The story is actually pretty good. Probably the most fun NASA/astronaut movie I’ve ever seen.
Pacing is good. Music is good. ScarJo has charisma and charm like Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan in the 90s. Channing Tatum has grown on me. I’m very much into comedies because it offers the highest replay value for me. I don’t think Fly Me to the Moon is the best movie of the year. It just happens to be my favorite for being so charming and it never feels slow. It has a historic background story that I find interesting for a rom-com.

So I was ranking all the MCU movies with the exception of The Marvels as I haven’t seen that yet on my Letterboxd app. I think Thor: Love and Thunder and Iron Man 2 are some of the worst films of the franchise but I surprisingly enjoyed them. Love and Thunder is really a bad movie. Maybe a top 7 worst movie from MCU. But it doesn’t mean I hated it.
Maybe that’s how some people feel about The Acolyte? Sometimes being bad doesn’t prevent people from still liking it. Enjoy what you want to enjoy and don’t listen to others telling you not to enjoy it. I don’t think these dudes really cares what SnarkyJay says or thinks. They just want to see her show some cleavage. Slick move by Will Jordan to wear shades while he’s indoors.

To me the trick to making star wars fights, or really any fights good, is to use the Shonen secret sauce. You don't need to have perfect visuals for a fight, as long as there is an ideological subtext fight going on underneath the surface. It requires set up and well thought out writing, but there's a reason everyone remembers Naruto v. Sasuke (2) and it's not cause the fight looked cool

Dune's visuals were absolutely stunning, though it MEANT something because they were thematically significant. Dune was 2 for 2. The Last Jedi, on the other hand, obviously strived to give us stunning visuals but they were confusing in terms of story/writing. Instead of drawing us into it, they pulled us out of it. WHY is Crait red with a white dust cover, again? There is a soldier who specifically licks the dust and says "Salt!" just to make sure the audience can understand why the white ground is turning red, though this property of the ground affects the story in NO way - it is strictly there for visual effect to the extent that the story itself bends backwards to explain it with that soldier's one line in the film. TLJ is full of examples like that. Disney Star Wars in general keeps trying to chase the "looks cool" factor in greater priority than "makes sense for the story".

Netflix tends to drop all theyre season episodes at one time so its unfair to judge it against a one (rather short) episode per week show. Thus episode 4 was the slowest and mostly a transport episode to "the big reveal" whom was not as interesting as the next episode whom has the big battle.
It was also at the hight of the negative debate about the first four episodes and it might have scared a few viewers away. It got much less aggressive after episode 5. Plus I think a percentage of the viewers wait until they can bing watch the entire season - Specially with those episode being so short.
But I am aboard that Disney need to stop choosing "bragging rights" over good stories. They need to understand that inclusion is not an excuse for good stories and that we can have both inclusion and good stories at once. (And I am all for inclusion in series and movies and respect all.)
