They were both breathing hard, it sure looks real like they are really going for it. Kareem was my original basketball hero, even from the UCLA days. Once they get within ten feet of the basket Kareem's height and technique is too much of an advantage, Julius just has to hope he misses. For everyone talking about the size advantage, look at Kareems speed, staying infront of Dr J on every defensive possession, that is by far the biggest factor in this matchup. Kyrie vs Mcgee 1v1 would show you that size isn't a problem if you are much quicker than your matchup.
Size matters bro. Skill matters too. Wtbs. Mcgee is an olympic gold medalist. NBA champ. 7ft tall. He might get crossed up. But he would prolly beat kyrie

You make a good point but a little man's biggest advantage is his quickness, and Dr J not only looked slow (understandable since he was way past his prime) but in terrible physical condition, he looked winded really quick even though he made a bit of a comeback. You don't lose height as you age, you do lose your quickness though.
1stMANoldtestLastPROPHEToldtest Yea, but MJ is so much younger than KAJ. Plus he had an outside shot. Dr J never had a consistent outside shot. The few times he did shoot it, it looked as awkward as can be. He was all dunks and layups. If the Doc could shoot from the perimeter he would have had a better chance in this contest. But this was a good match up though because they were only 3 years apart in age. The bottom line....the good big man will almost always beat the small good man if all other things are equal.
@@marioguti9887 Agreed, however, if you put Doc in his prime, you put Kareem in his. I grew up in Philly and loved Dr. J, but you can't deny Kareem is GOAT. Even Dr. J says that about him. It is what it is.
I can't believe years later, this man still makes those hook shots better than anybody. Can somebody tell me anybody in today's game, who has a good hook shot like Kareem?
Wish it was Jodran against Kareem so once and for all Kareem would show the world that the sky hook is a machine which created dynasties in high school, college and pros..............6 league mvps, 6 world championships, 3 college champs, high school champs....and the most points ever in the history of professional basketball...........(Lebron still chasing it)
What Dr J did on defence was already consider illegal in today's standard, YET no matter what he did to Kareem, Kareem's fundamental sky hook is purely unguardable. Pity no one is using this skill anymore.
You really don’t need that much skill when there is a big height advantage. Notice even when Kareem missed, Dr j still had trouble rebounding a miss from Kareem.
Kareem just came of retirement a year or 2 ago. Dr. J retired 7 years ago before this event. Kareem is 7'2". Dr. J is 6'6". That is 8 inches in height differential. Growing up Dr. J was my favorite player but he didn't have a chance on this one-on-one match with Kareem. I'm 5'10". It's like me playing one- on- one against 6'6" NBA player...don't have a chance!
This was supposed to be Kareem vs. Wilt. A rematch of sorts as Kareem beat him b4 one on one in his college days. Wilt's ego got in the way, he chickened out to avoid another ass kicking. This is all in Kareem's book btw. His beef with Wilt, etc. anyways, Doc filled in for Wilt, showing class and guts to get the butt whupping meant for Wilt Chamberlain.
Dr J was at a disadvantage here though. What's a smaller player's biggest advantage over a big? His quickness and this being a way past their prime 1 v 1, KAJ absolutely had the advantage. Now if they played this game in the 70s, I think the game would be more competitive.
it would have been worse in the 70s. Kareem in the 70s was the most unstoppable player in the league. He could very well have had 7 or 8 mvps alone in the 70s but they got tired of giving him the award.
More competitive? Kareem is OLDER than Doc J by 3 years. Kareem would have been far hungrier in say, 1974 than he was when they played this debacle. Kareem would have crushed him at anytime. Kareem was not only bigger, he was better.
They were both way past there prime in this game. And there is only a 3 year age difference. And what about Kareem’s quickness? He wasn’t exactly a turtle when he played.
They might have been older but the game still played out the way it would have. Both guys CONSISTENTLY got to their spots where they could score effectively
@@donshults7772 You're misinterpreting what the individual is saying. Dr.J would have been far more athletic and quicker than now to where his competitive advantage would have been his athleticism and quickness. As you get older, that declines much quicker than what Kareem would have lost at an older age. So this was basically a taller guy in Kareem competing against a smaller guy who had NO advantages at all due.
People need to stop disrespecting the Capt. He was the best player in every single level of basketball throughout his life. He was the best player in High school, college, and nba for 3 decades, the capt was the best player on the planet during his prime.

You know I really didn’t understand how great Kareem was. To me he was just a one trick pony with the Sky hook But now I see his incredible touch and skill. It’s quite amazing.
Kareem had a very soft touch, sky hooks from everywhere, some very large 2's, great footwork, extremely strong to get near the post and shoot all net 3's too.
This is really nice. Imagine if they would include that in the all star competition. I would like to see Shaq against Barkley or Jordan against Karl Malone.
Two veteran warhorses clash in the twilight of thier careers. Kareem with superior height and size won. Julius showed flashes of brilliance in spite of that. Dr j is still my all around favorite player, he elevated the game.
Legends tournament. Eight 'Legends' in a tourny. Play to 11 over the ASG Weekend. Start Fri end it on Sun before ASG. It would garner more attention than the ASG itself.

Actually these two had played one on one before when the NBA had a one on one tournament. They were both in the league at the time and Jabbar beat Dr. J then also. I believe Jabbar won the tournament. The NBA had the one on one tournament a couple of times.
Kareems hook shot most of the time is preceded with an elbow to the chest from the off arm. He also does this every time some one tries to steal the ball. Got by with it his whole career
It was a pleasure to watch these greats after all these years this was a friendly exhibition from two classy men and let it be understood a young Jordan against a young Kareem or wilt would probably fare worse
Nah, Jordan was far superior to Dr. J. No way he let Kareem dribble/back up all the way from 3point line into the paint and MJ was MUCH stronger. Talking late 80s to 90s MJ. The Doctor was great but not as strong a defender as MJ. Plus MJ had that turnaround fadeway which was the equivalent of the unblockable skyhook. Still in a serious prime one on one I'd expect the 7.2 Kareem to win against a guard. Jordan is even a bit shorter than Erving. BUT if ANY guard has a chance it is hands down MJ. Love this clip by the way ! ! !

And in a one on one aint´t nobody feeding Shaq so he gotta actually dribble...I know he has some handles but not enough to blow past Hakeem. Hakeem is also faster and has range to his shot . Dream is also one of the best shot blockers all time. According to Kenny Smith (very recent interview on Draymond Green´s podcast) , Hakeem would make 5-8 three pointers outta 10 attempts (all positions) and also run through all the guard drills with Kenny and Sam Cassel. Kenny said: Dream, why don´t you shoot 3s in the game ? Hakeem: Why should I ? Only Robinson and Ewing are any challenge for me inside, would be stupid to take a three pointer ;-) !
Yup, I looked it up and Kareem was 1 for 18 in his career. (It came in a game against the Suns, a long offensive rebound bounced into the corner and Kareem tracked it down and then shot it. Jabbar and Wilt are GOATS. the rules of the game were changed to go against them. for Jordan the rules were changed in his favor. I would have like to see Jabbar vs Wilt during this time
The editing makes it look much better than it was. As I recall both were ice cold as if they hadn't played for years early on. Kareem started hitting, Dr.J still wasn't able to and then towards the end Kareem made zero effort to contest his jumpers to make the score look a little better for Dr. J. A good big man always beats a good small man. Wilt would have crushed Michael Jordan one on one.
Why man ? This shouldn't have taken place .Two legends, having their dominating careers disrespected like this. A old retired gunfighter ,shouldn't be pressured to a gunfight.
No wonder why KG dominated 1 on 1 in team USA camp. The height advantage takes a big role in it. And KG is one of the complete big man in history. Now that will go to KD I think
Yeah it's not really a pretty sight watching old legends play. But the nostalgia makes it bearable but I'd rather not see them in that state. Unless they've been pretty active. Cuttion Mobley, baron Davis were still pretty good around their 40s. But Dr J and Kareem , you could see they've stopped playing for quite a while.
@Ant Ham It is embarrassing cause "The Doc" thought he had a chance. Ppl play to win and if you lose by a large margin it's embarrassing. Ask any competitive person in the world.
I remember watching this on PPE. They had a tournament style one on one between other legends before. I know that Rick Barry beat Archibald in the finals I think Iceman was one of the other players I can't remember who else.
size difference is magnified when playing one on one....only way for the undersized player to counter act this is shoot 3s but this was a different era
I would like for the nba to try something new during the all star weekend. For example replace the dunk contest and have a one on one or a two on two tournament.
@Bryson Reins I think players would come up to the challenge. Like I would love to see Devin Booker v Jason Tatum. I think the problem would be that owners wouldn't want star players to play for fear of the players actually going hard.

@@Mikeygru The met in their primes and Kareem beat the Sixers 3 times out of 4 I believe. Up until the Sixers got legendary Big Man Moses Malone....then they got their ring. Fans believed Kareem was washed up.No problem, Kareem hit the gym and bulked up, adding another 5 years to his career. Then at almost 47 years age, he beats the Doctor again, with Jordan watching as his hero gets a serious whooping.
For everyone talking about the size advantage, look at Kareems speed, staying infront of Dr J on every defensive possession, that is by far the biggest factor in this matchup.
Kyrie vs Mcgee 1v1 would show you that size isn't a problem if you are much quicker than your matchup.
I think Javee McGee could beat him….. not saying he’s better but he’s a 7ft freakish athlete that would score almost every time on Kyrie.
Smart man.
Size matters bro. Skill matters too. Wtbs. Mcgee is an olympic gold medalist. NBA champ. 7ft tall. He might get crossed up. But he would prolly beat kyrie
@@ChuckGnarlyTV THATS NOT FEET SLIDE ITS CALLED WINGSPAN. WILT HAVE BEST IN HISTORY AND FOR SIZE PIPPEN AND KAWHI ARE 2ND BEST EVER. I DO AGREE MCGEE IS TOP 10 PLAYER EVER BUT CONNIE HAWKINS HAVE SAME LIKE MCGEE. U CANT DO MUCH VS BEST WINGSPAN PLAYERS.
Never seen nor heard of this happening wow!!!
Supposed to be 7 other one on ones also but stern forced those players to cancel or face 1 year suspension... Mj vs magic.. hakeem vs Robinson barkly vs malone and a few more. They had commercials on tv for it .. it was cancelled a few days before except this matchup since they were already retired
War on the Floor: Shaq vs Hakeem supposed to happen in Spring of 1995 but cancelled because Hakeem got injured during practice.
Just like the saying goes, a great big man will beat a great little man. Jabbar beat the brakes off-of dr. j.
You make a good point but a little man's biggest advantage is his quickness, and Dr J not only looked slow (understandable since he was way past his prime) but in terrible physical condition, he looked winded really quick even though he made a bit of a comeback. You don't lose height as you age, you do lose your quickness though.
Mario Da Cunt Yea I understand, whenever kareem hooked it, it was clear he didnt get as high as he usually would
Naaaaw...Doc didn't have any off the dribble moves, quickness or speed it seems! If that was Mike, he would've got pass him every time
1stMANoldtestLastPROPHEToldtest
Yea, but MJ is so much younger than KAJ.
@@marioguti9887
Agreed, however, if you put Doc in his prime, you put Kareem in his. I grew up in Philly and loved Dr. J, but you can't deny Kareem is GOAT. Even Dr. J says that about him. It is what it is.
👌🏾👍🏾👌🏾 I watched this with a Big smile on my face, two LEGENDS at work here
They should bring this back. Iverson vs. Marbury, McGrady vs. Carter..
And they say big men back in Kareem day can't shoot 3's. His shot looks pretty effective to me.
Vince Carter is like their age or close to when they filmed this....Crazy
Kareem with his skyhook skills and tall stature is way too big for Dr. J
Kareem retired at 42 in 89 and this was made in 92 3 years later.
Vince Carter was born in 76 . Dr j was born in 1950 while Kareem was born in the 40s. Not close
@@kyleelliott1442 The age carter is now is and still playing is what he was saying, he is right. They were in their 40s in 92 and so is Carter now
Yes u right, I just think the same
I can't believe years later, this man still makes those hook shots better than anybody. Can somebody tell me anybody in today's game, who has a good hook shot like Kareem?
Me
1 word answer " NOBODY".
No one, because big men rely on 3 point shots now😂
Two of my favorite players of all time. Plus, Kareem is the GOAT!
Don’t think he’s the GOAT but he makes a damn good case
Jordan
Jordan make a good case
Wish it was Jodran against Kareem so once and for all Kareem would show the world that the sky hook is a machine which created dynasties in high school, college and pros..............6 league mvps, 6 world championships, 3 college champs, high school champs....and the most points ever in the history of professional basketball...........(Lebron still chasing it)
@@sherrodmacs3472 1 of those mvps were given to him while he missed the playoffs. Makes u go hmmmm
Kareem just let DrJ have his outside shots without contesting them; a very admirable thing to do.
Dr.j 6'8 Captain 7'2
Kareem is 3 years older than Dr. J
4:03 🐇😷 at the age 40 something on a legendary 7 footer 👀
My wish, the footage was clearer and I had discovered it long ago.
I was at that. In Atlantic City around 1991 or 92?
People need to stop disrespecting the Capt. He was the best player in every single level of basketball throughout his life. He was the best player in High school, college, and nba for 3 decades, the capt was the best player on the planet during his prime.
+ he kick Bruce Lee ass
Kareem is too big for the Dr. But the Dr did pretty well Considering., like the Introduction says ; Kareem Abdul Jabbar , 6 NBA Championships , 2 NCAA Titles , 6 MVP's, 17 All Star Selections , NBA All Time Scoring Champion , 30,000 points
Damn I love basketball I'm 37 and my first time seeing this is in 2021 damn I suck but this video is awesome the sound effects these 2 legends have will get you a teck in today's game
2:29 Damn Kareem head near the rim at the age of 45
CHEAT CODE!!!! 🤣
Perfect block too!
@sha broussard it is cause he's 45
You know I really didn’t understand how great Kareem was. To me he was just a one trick pony with the Sky hook But now I see his incredible touch and skill. It’s quite amazing.
Only a fool like you thought Kareem was just Skyhook.
You definitely don't know anything about basketball.
Two of the Greatest way after their primes put that in perspective.
Agreed!
Just seen this for my first time ever it was a dream.come true just amazing
Kareem Abdul Jabbar is and has always been, The Greatest Basketball Player. Period.
Kareem had a very soft touch, sky hooks from everywhere, some very large 2's, great footwork, extremely strong to get near the post and shoot all net 3's too.
Yes that’s why he is the leading NBA point scorer of all time! By the way, the videos on the playlist on my channel might interest some people!
What the hell are "very large 2's" ? 😂
I remember when this was on pay-per-view!!!
Even in their 60's, those 2 gentlemen are still in greater shape than most everyone else.
They were probably in their late 40’s at this point. This is 1992.
45 to be exact
This is really nice. Imagine if they would include that in the all star competition. I would like to see Shaq against Barkley or Jordan against Karl Malone.
I love Dr. Jay but I know he can’t mess with Kareem one on one
That's Shaq against Jordan. The bigger man will dominate
eh, if it went longer Dr J would have caught him. Once both are tired, the quickness will become more of an advantage.
its Dr. J. not Jay. who the hell is jay?
not in the half court game

This proves you cant teach height I love the doc. But I rather seen wilt
This is one of the more incredible things I’ve found in the past few years
It was entertaining, but both players were bast their Prime. it. have been more interesting to see them play at their Peak
Youre a spoiled little man
outcome in their prime would be the same
@@starchildarryl not to sure j had been out of the game several yrs kareem only a couple
They should bring 1-on-1s back and allow people to vote which NBA player vs which they want to see..
que duelo lindo de se ver. Duas lendas!
In their prime other than Wilt the Dr J was one of the only
person to Block Kareem’s
Sky Hook during a NBA game
while doc was younger (42 vs 45 yrs old), kareem had been active more recently (3 years retired compared to 5)
Kareem was just too big, the doctor couldn't keep from getting backed down
Kareem has always kept himself in top shape even now in his early 70s.
And Dr.J was put in at the last minute when Wilt backed out so Doc didn’t have much time to prepare.
Doc was in shape though, that had to be hard work checking Kareem
No excuses... get out of here
EXCELLENT 👏🏿✊🏿👏🏿✊🏿!!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I aint even a sports fan, but I have been binge watching the old sports, mostly basketball and sometimes football 🥰!!!
Actually these two had played one on one before when the NBA had a one on one tournament. They were both in the league at the time and Jabbar beat Dr. J then also. I believe Jabbar won the tournament. The NBA had the one on one tournament a couple of times.
What a Gem thanks for posting I love this
Kareems hook shot most of the time is preceded with an elbow to the chest from the off arm. He also does this every time some one tries to steal the ball. Got by with it his whole career
He knew how to use every tool to create space.... That's what made him a genius in the post.
Ive been a big basketball fan for like 10 years, and yes this is the first time i discover this!!!
@@thedudeunchained7583 that’s a respectable and knowledgeable take from what I understand it was supposed to be wilt instead of doc Never happened like when shaq and Hakeem did those commercials I took Hakeem in that one
@@ricogonzalez7508 Thanks 🙂 and fully agree, Hakeem would kill Shaq with his footwork on offense and has the defensive presence to make it hard for Shaq to score.
Wow! Nice to see them both playing again . Hard to guard Kareem . So tall, so good .
You know what would’ve been more interesting
Magic Johnson vs Michael Jordan at the United Center or maybe even Madison Square Garden
Mj already smacked him in the USA Olympics practice
They actually tried to set this up in Vegas but Jordan backed out and the. Used the players association as an excuse for not playing
Duncan vs Olajuwon
Rick Barry vs Larry Bird
Gary Payton vs Allen Iverson🤗🏀🤗. And we could throw in Magic vs Bird too!
They REALLY NEED to bring this type of competition back to the NBA, maybe a small 10 player “last man standing” tournament during All-Star weekend!
Kareem made more 3s in this game than he did in his entire NBA career
Best comment here!
Yup, I looked it up and Kareem was 1 for 18 in his career. (It came in a game against the Suns, a long offensive rebound bounced into the corner and Kareem tracked it down and then shot it. I thought he did it to beat the shot clock but actually the shot clock had re-set! ruclips.net/video/dQeW07wwbis/видео.html )
victorsixtythree yeah I saw that...didn’t need to shoot 3s because Wooden would’ve yanked him out of the game if he did...hehehehehe
I think this is proof if Kareem were to play in todays NBA, he could adapt and shoot the three. He'd just need to practice the shot more
@@markrabago6443 There were 3s in NCAA in 60s?
Jabbar and Wilt are GOATS. the rules of the game were changed to go against them. for Jordan the rules were changed in his favor. I would have like to see Jabbar vs Wilt during this time
1:12 and 5:57: for the people who say kareem can't shoot or doesn't shoot 3's
yawn
The editing makes it look much better than it was. As I recall both were ice cold as if they hadn't played for years early on. Kareem started hitting, Dr.J still wasn't able to and then towards the end Kareem made zero effort to contest his jumpers to make the score look a little better for Dr. J. A good big man always beats a good small man. Wilt would have crushed Michael Jordan one on one.
George gervin vs Jack Sikma
This is an awesome concept. The NBA should have instituted this!
In there prime that would've been PPV
It actually was
Why man ? This shouldn't have taken place .Two legends, having their dominating careers disrespected like this. A old retired gunfighter ,shouldn't be pressured to a gunfight.
Kareem was probably 8 inches taller but 3 yrs older, amazing level of play, he was my hero before Magic or Jordan.
cap
No wonder why KG dominated 1 on 1 in team USA camp. The height advantage takes a big role in it. And KG is one of the complete big man in history. Now that will go to KD I think
Where's the oxygen
😂😂😂😂
I recall footage from that era being crystal clear. Why is it so damn blurry now?
I was shocked how easy this was for Kareem.
shock? a center playing against a small forward and has 7 inches on him? you don't play much b-ball do you? the outcome should have been obvious
they should do more stuff like this. i'd rather watch youtube handhelds of a a minute of pro's playing each other than full games tbh
I wanna see Isaiah Thomas vs. Michael Jordan.
...in the octagon
KAJ crushed Dr.J. And yes, Kareem is the GOAT over MJ.
I remember being hype for this....turned out to be pretty awful. Both legends though
When this event happen?? This is the first time I saw this ?? Thank you for posting it.
The Doc!
Still made the greatest move of all tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime
This is so damn cool! Thank you for sharing this!
He is the GOAT SKY HOOK 33
That hook is ridiculously hard to stop for anyone
This was embarrassing for Dr. J... They weren't even playing make it take it.
he dunked on kareem face.. not embarassing
@Ant Ham You should have told Dr. J that before he accepted to play against him one on one on live TV.
The greatest center vs the greatest small forward
Dumisa,
1/2 right. Julius Erving is not even close. He may be the best dunker but certainly not the best small forward.
@THEWORDISMARCHD LeBron and Larry are better. No need to justify this .
@TheWordIsMarc not even close
@TheWordIsMarc Your right, Wilt no contest!
size difference is magnified when playing one on one....only way for the undersized player to counter act this is shoot 3s but this was a different era
😆 they was selling this hard . Goats
If the NBA really wanted an exciting all star weekend, they’d create a one on one tournament and find a way to make the games competitive.
Kareem is not even trying
Poor Kareem, he was short of breath. He was gassed.
Wilt Chamberlain would have been in his mid-50s. No wonder you didn't want to do it.
so nice, the sportsmanship of both are amazing
Kareem is goat
I would like for the nba to try something new during the all star weekend. For example replace the dunk contest and have a one on one or a two on two tournament.
@Bryson Reins I think players would come up to the challenge. Like I would love to see Devin Booker v Jason Tatum. I think the problem would be that owners wouldn't want star players to play for fear of the players actually going hard.
Great idea! I concur! Bring 1on 1 to the all 🌟 format!
There was a one-on-one tournament in 1972. Athletic/skilled and strong center beats guard for the championship.
Kareem's black belt martial art master, deadly elbows and unstoppable hook shot made him lethal....
Great to see two of my All-Timer faves, but they needed a closer matchup.
