Love Carlos's "jump straight up" advice; had to figure that out myself. I realized it was a pretty basic "preservation of momentum" physics problem. Since you're traveling forward at the same rate as the board, you'll continue to move forward at that same rate as long as you only apply force vertically (not forward or backwards). Forward momentum is preserved for both your body and the board, so you'll stay aligned with the board.
It's the same thing as jumping while on an airplane flight. Nobody expects the airplane to shoot forward at 500 MPH once you jump. Both you and the plane are already moving forward at that speed, and your vertical hop will land you at the same place in the plane, even though the ground below is screaming past.

I love Carlos. He understands fear and how to deal with it. He'd make a wonderful coach too. Plus I love Jenise. She's so sweet and vulnerable. I saw her trying this on her channel and I was so excited to see her get to deal with her fear with Carlos. You should follow her. She's about to go through surgery on a blown knee that kept her out of the Olympics in snow boarding.
Also I think Carlos would be a good counselor for abused kids. He provides a safe space to open up and grow. He's the bomb.

The best thing Los does when he teaches, is showing people how to control the skateboard. Just making peeps understand body mechanics and critical steps shows how much he loves skateboarding.

if you still need advice with that here is what helps me overcome hasitation:
drink beer.
i'm not talking a lot of beer, i'm talking just one 0.5L bottle.

I swear this sort of stuff is sick. It's so awesome seeing people learn stuff for the first time. It's what skateboarding is about. When the scene is rife with people talking about "posers" and "fake steeze" it's refreshing to see videos like this. Bring it back to the roots. Skateboarding for life.
Carlos focus more on teaching Jenise, while Gabe tries to teach Jenise and the viewers at the same time in a way. For such a mental exercise that this trick needed, Carlos' style was the way to go :) Really inspiring to watch, and Jenise is fun to watch because she's so serious about learning it. Great video :)

Carlos is such a good teacher, I kinda don’t struggle with hesitation because I’m really stupid and try’s shit without thinking and I start skating like a month ago and I guess I found that being stupid is actually good😂

Learning this now, I have the same problem where going at normal speed I pretty much struggle or don't commit. I actually jumped and sent my board rolling to the other side of the path I was practicing on 🤣. I think I just need to remember the previous hippie jump tutorial video and maybe this one since I was pretty much fresh off the tutorial when I tried before my last session.

yea he is certainly looking at her lower face there.
might be because he is wearing ear buds all the time (can be observed in other videos) dude probably doesn't hear very well, so looking at a persons mouth helps a lot.
