    Doyle Lawson is the standard for The bluegrass mandolin chop. When I was beginning to play the mandolin back in the early 70’s I tried to play the chop chords like Doyle.

      Right on Ron. I spent hours playing along with early DLQ recordings and Blugrass Album Band of course....

    Hey Wayne what loved the video. I know you are probably busy but I would love to see how you structure your breaks on different songs. I may be overlooking one of your previous videos on something similar.

      That's a tough subject to generalize but I do have several breakdowns of solos in my "Growing thru Bluegrass Standards" playlist. Check those out and let me know if it helps......

    Question Wayne i find myself using a bar chord sometimes like when we are playing out of b i will bar the 4th fret and use my pinky and ring fingers to make a b do you ever use that for a chop?

    • @wandering128
      @wandering128 3 года назад +1

      @grasser82 I do that shape almost all the time, chopping & sometimes to do a "swell" as he called it. Great question - I'm looking fwd to the response!
      Thanx Wayne - always excellent content!

      I do play that shape at times but more likely on a swell than a chop. That bar chord approach works great for minor and minor 7 chords.

    how do you develop licks that incorporate into the melodies of songs what are some basic steps to do this?

    • @waynesworldofmandolin3616
      @waynesworldofmandolin3616  3 года назад

      Are you asking about rhythm swells? I'm not sure about the question since it is in the comments of this chop video.....

      Listen to Tony Rice and Doyle Lawson play swells together and use it as a template for what you feel. "Swell" your rhythm between vocal lines and accent the beginning of solos other people play. This approach should get you started....
