    I gained 4 stones in a few months and can't shift it. Feel highly uncomfortable and look terrible. I look pregnant or like a massive beer belly. You're the only person who has ever explained things to me. You've made so much sense. Stress/ anxiety has been a huge factor. Even stressed looking in the mirror at myself. I've never snacked between meals and lately I'm constantly hungry. Thank you for the advice. I'm on it. X

    A. Vogel UK: Menopause belly fat & how to lose it
    NOTES:
    Cortisol stress hormone production increases as progesterone hormone production decreases during menopause. This creates storage of fat in the belly. The body thinks you will starve & needs to store your energy so the body stores fat as a "spare tire". We need to fool the body.
    What to do:
    Take magnesium supplements & magnesium rich food.
    Take B vitamins.
    Take calming herbs (aveno calm, pasiflora, hipericum)
    Avoid foods that trigger the nervous system-- coffee fizzy drinks high salt & sugar foods
    Daily proper relaxation. Give your nervous system the break it needs. 30 mins meditation reduces cortisol.
    Eat well (Eat high protein, cut carbs, loads of veggies, some fruit, nuts & yoghurt for snacks. Snacks balance nervous system.)
    Be active. Walk. Do short bursts of exercise. Do HIIT exercise routines (High intensity interval training). No long exercise routines.

    I did this..ramped up exercise and cut calories and gained weight. Talk about depressing, and I ended up flaring my arthritis.
    I am doing what you suggested now, keeping active throughout the day as my body can handle.
    I am 50 and almost out of perimenopause. Its been a rough ride. I have found I am less hungry now.
    Its so hard to figure out sometimes. I got remarried at 45, moved far away from friends and family and had a hard time coping with all the changes as it was.
    Life is an adventure. Glad to have you here to guide the way!

    Weight training is so important to help prevent fat gain, I'm 46 and for the first time in my adult live my weight is sable and I am happy with my figure, going plant based as well has helped with this also.
    Great video, except for labelling all carbs as bad, whole grains help and are healthy, avoid refined carbs definitely.
    I love to do at least 15 mins of yoga everyday at home, following RUclips yoga, this helps keep me calm and focused, as well as the physical benefits yoga. Sometimes I use the guided mediations too, when I get stressed.

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  5 лет назад +3

      Hi Vickie, thank you for your feedback. I totally agree, unfortunately for many people the focus is on the wrong type of carbs and reducing refined options can often be a good start point for many of us, whilst of course, not forgetting to include some good quality wholegrains. Thank you for the tips on yoga too which can be a great tool for helping to relax our minds!

    Excellent tips! I would add that sleep is so important at this stage. At 46 I now need to go to bed an extra hour earlier to make up for the lost sleep from middle of the night hot flashes along with a quick bathroom break. This means I have to give up some time with extra hobbies in life which is difficult but it’s either keeping those hobbies or my health suffers.

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  2 года назад +1

      You're right Deborah, poor sleep can impact on so many menopause symptoms so it is really important to get enough. Some women do find, though, that once through the menopause their sleep improves and they then need less, so this may just be a phase for you.

    You’ve made more sense than anyone that I’ve tried to get info on lately. I’m 68 but I’ve been in Menopause for many years. I’m doing core and strength training every single day-I’m reducing my calories- and yet my scale keeps going up. I am going to take all your info and use it in hopes of ridding myself of this horrible spare tire, that I can’t get rid of. But my question is-how many days a week do I do the HIT?

    That’s so true. I’ve just come across your channel and I’m so glad I did. 4 years ago I started putting on weight, it seemed every other day I had put on an extra kilo...14 kilos all up, to be exact. I would walk 7-16 kilometres everyday (depending on my day) and the weight remained the same. It was so depressing.
    This year, I started eating vegetarian, not strictly, but mostly, and generally feel so much better.
    I still have my occasional fried food (meat & fish), feta cheese and goats milk in my coffee (can’t give that up yet, but have it down to 2 cups a day max). Although I’m working on eliminating all dairy as I’m told dairy is a real problem with the hot flushes and insomnia.
    I do relax and take out time for myself everyday. All my blood tests are 10/10 (my Doctors exact words).
    And the weight is practically melting off. Without really doing any exercise, apart from a short 20-40 minute walk a few times a week. I’m so surprised and very thankful, I’ve lost 6kilos without really trying. However I do suffer from the hot flushes 24/7 and have insomnia, which started 3-4 months ago and couldn’t work out why. I’ve always fallen asleep straight away in the past. I’m a bit moody but snap out of it straightaway. I’ve decided to go on Premisil as of tomorrow, as it’s a natural herb to combat these symptoms. See how I go. Thankyou for your advice and video. You’ve helped me understand what’s going on with my body and mind. It all makes sense to me now. I’m definitely subscribing, to learn more. Many blessings to you.

    Thank you so much for all of your wonderful advice and videos. How do you feel about intermittent fasting?

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  5 лет назад +3

      Glad you enjoy them, thanks! Although there is now lots of research on intermittent fasting I am wary of recommending it in the menopause. We do know that blood sugar regulation can go awry at this time and any big surges or dips can trigger adrenaline or histamine. These in turn can often cause or make worse the usual symptoms. Also, at this time the adrenals can often be in flight or fight mode practically constantly and if the body feels lack of food this can switch on ‘famine mode’ which results in a slowing down of the metabolism.
      However, probably, once a week for most women shouldn’t be an issue as long as you don’t exercise hard on these days. I guess it is a case of trying to see how you get on. If symptoms get worse on the fasting days then you will know that your body is not happy!

    Just adding an update to my previous comment. I have since stopped all dairy apart from the almond milk in my occassional latte (1 or 2 a week). I drink 1 cup of dandelion tea each day and pepermint tea every day an hour after my meals. Ive stopped eating meat except for fish. I have also started drinking 1 tblspn of apple cider vinegar with the mother in 8oz glass of warm water upon waking every day and my hot flushes dissapeard the same day! Premensil didnt work neither did other herb based teas and tablets. My daily 24/7 debilitaing headaches stopped as well. Im sleeping has gone back to normal as well. Try tge apple cider vinegar ladies, you'll be glad you did. It works!

All those chemical flavours are designed to make you crave more and the more you have the worse you feel.

    Are there any foods or supplements one can take to help increase progesterone levels during menopause ? If the progesterone level is increased, won't it help to combat the increased cortisol level ?

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  2 года назад

      Hi Alexa
      Yam seems to be quoted as a 'progesterone' food but I am not sure how helpful it may be. It is said that eating a good varied diet contain plenty of fresh foods can help the body to produce progesterone naturally but this can be hindered by adrenal stress. High cortisol can affect oestrogen and progesterone production so anything you can do to calm and support the nervous system can often be of benefit.

      Hi Mary
      You would need to ask your doctor this question as they need to take your age, symptoms and general health into account before deciding if it's appropriate for you.
      Maybe also ask them to check your thyroid function as poor thyroid function can often appear in the menopause and this can cause weight gain and also make it very difficult to lose.

    Is Intermittent Fasting benificial for women who have reached menopause?

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  2 года назад

      Hi
      It does seem to help some women but blood sugar control can become very unstable at this time. Leaving huge gaps between meals can cause a major dip and this can trigger severe sugar cravings, headaches, binge eating or even weight gain.
      If you wish to try it, I would suggest doing this for a couple of weeks and see how you feel. If you feel energetic and you don't feel hungry and in need of sugary foods then it should be fine to continue. If, however, you feel tired, crave sweet/carb foods, binge eat or gain weight then it is advisable to stop.

    I am 8.7 stone and very petite . Have not had a period for over a year now so I am in menopause.
    My hot flushes and night sweats are a real pain and so is my sleep which used to be a full 8 hrs and now it’s 5 hrs on and off .
    So I can just deal with that but my real problem is that menopausal muffin! I am now an apple shape and because I am small it’s looks ridiculous and it’s hard to find tops that look good. I know some of you ladies out there are probably scoffing at my 8.7 stone but seriously I look stupid with a huge big gut and then thin arms and legs.
    So a week ago I decided to do something about it and have taken myself off sugar and limit my carbs. That is no bread or pasta and limited amount of carbs. I try to keep down to 100 carbs a day. It’s been a week and my stomach has become much more flat, so instead of pinching a big handful of flab, it is now a couple of inches. Seriously whether this will last I don’t know , but I will update in a few weeks. Also make sure you are not constipated and keep things flowing
    I don’t want to do the full keto diet but I am sure that cutting down on your sugar and carbs will help to get the belly fat under control . Once your body gets low on carbs for energy it will break down the fat stores and this is how you lose weight.
    Just to say that it is not easy to stay low carb , but I am sure it is good for my health .
    Good luck ladies xx

      That's a brilliant result Anna and thank you for the encouragement. I do find that a basic low carb diet can work really well, I'm not a big fan of the Keto as it can be really hard to stick to for some of us!

    Please can you explain why the left breast is bigger than the right breast during menopause, does it have something to do with menopause? I have my head beat in my head, it is just like heartbeat but this time I am having it beat in my head & I cannot get to slaap. I cannot get into the deepest stage of slaap. If I even get some slaap I go to slaap with headbeats & I wake up with headbeats.

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  2 года назад

      Hi Meo
      Breast size, shape and density often change during the menopause and some women do find that one breast can be a slightly different shape to the other, however, it is important to get any breast changes checked out by your doctor as well.
      Headbeats could be caused by a number of issues such as stress, high blood pressure, dehydration or even too much coffee or fizzy drinks. Again, this should be checked by your doctor for a proper diagnosis first.

      I actually stopped going to any doctors. Since I am in UK 90% of the GPs are searching in their screens on Internet for any, I repeat , for ANYTHING so they can answer your questions. I am still in shock - I can also search like that in the comfort of my own home. Most of the GPs I have been they do exact;y that - searching on Internet. This is soo wrong. I wonder if any of them have been in a proper Medical university,.. For my menopause they put me straight to HRT without any questions. Only 2 months on HRT and I gained 10 kg my breast was ready to explode. One of my GPs also told me to cut carbs and etc. Well I am not so crazy to do it. I am also vegetarians and our body need carbs, all the rest is absolutely crap ! All those diets are soo wrong. Since I cut HRT and continue feeding my with loads of veggies and fruits I’ve lost those 10 kgs. From the HRT . And I train hard at home - no more gym . I use both kettlebells and dumbbells,. Still have hot flushes from time to time but I consume “the golden paste” from turmeric so I am ok for now.

    I feel tired after doing exercise my body pain a lot how much exercise should we do in a week

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  2 года назад +1

      Feeling tired or sore after exercise often indicates that too much has been done so maybe try doing it for a shorter time and make sure that you have a rest day regularly. I would normally recommend cardio exercise of some kind 3 times a week and on the rest days do gentle yoga or go for a walk.
      You may also find having a small snack about an hour before exercise can help, fatigue can often be caused by a sudden drop in blood sugar levels and make sure that you are drinking plenty of water as you exercise to avoid dehydration as that will cause fatigue too and hinder muscle recovery.
