came back to see where it all began... I learned how to RC from your vids...l Thanks Ed for your videos! 7,8-10 years later... Now my entire family is into RC ( :
For the people from Euro-Land: This method also works nicely with 6mm Depron or any other cheapo floor or wall insulation foam without an outer layer of paper. Just pre-cover the outside of the Depron/foam with tape *before* bending. Armin wing style. Then deeply score the insides where you want the depron to bend and form the corners Use edge of a cd, empty pen, popsicle stick etc.for scoring. Use hot glue, Uhu Por and activated cyanacrylate for glueing. Result ist very stiff, robust and, due to the absence of paper, absolutely water resistant.
I have plenty of Exp with balsa building and was wanting to get into Depron building to increase my skill base. This vide was what I needed! Very well put together with great info , Thanks!
Awesome video so great you took your time to do a tutorial for this, just bought 10 sheets of readyboard from dollar tree and planing a build, I also want to note you can order black readyboard from dollar tree but you must pick up at store no delivery.
Nice video showing a good method as well. I have just one suggestion, possibly you may have already tried it -but BEFORE folding over your sides to join the split would it be easier to glue your inner support first (to one side only) while flat and then fold & glue closed? Hopefully you can picture in your mind what I am saying. It would allow easier access to the inner support for applying glue & positioning then lay flat and clamp down? Btw - I have been doing this method of building with Depron (& foam board) for several years & before I ever seen it on You Tube it is also the method that I used to join and seal the joint when I build. I will try your method next time it might be a bit easier-either method should, will work good -Thanks for posting
Hello, first of all, I want to tell you that I see your videos and I find them very interesting. Thank you. Could you tell me what type of material you use... is it depron? And how thick, could you tell me so I can find it in Spain. Thanks again
gorilla glue and UHU POR are not alike. Gorilla glue, when activated by water (fine mist/spray) will foam out and expand, so it's absolutely vital that the parts to be glued are well clamped in place to dry. UHU POR is a contact adhesive that requires an even thin coating on both parts to be glued, you allow the glue to dry for 10 minutes, then firmly press the pieces together, they'll pretty much instantly be bonded. Hope this helps
I'm building your fuselage design with Elmers foam board. It seems to have heavier paper, but it is going together very well. With one sheet I'm going to be able to make a 38 inch fuse (30 + 8) with the 2 inch paper measurement on the inside. I made a set of 7" chord wings, 60 " span. I do not know how to place the wing for center of gravity.
Hey Ed, for joining those two halves at the bottom of the tube with hot glue, could you hot glue the joiner to one half, then apply hot glue to the other half of the joiner and put the other side into place, instead of clamping with that extra piece as you showed?
Hi Ed, Currently building the AXON and have a question on how you butt up the 30in standard tube with the 12in angled piece for the lower body main tube. Do you use anything on the inside to keep the tube pieces square or just butt them up.... tape and use the 12in top chamber tube to help keep it in place... have you had any shifting of the nose part?
The boardfoam I was using wont peel off and was so frustrating..I ended up scoring the bending parts with ball hammer(ball side). It worked but took me longer.. Any advice how to deal with unpeelable foam? Thanks and I really appreciate your time sharing your videos.. REPLY
my next build i will use the score meathed its faster and makes a stronger tube because sometimes when cutting the paper you cut into the foam and it makes cracks in the corners thanks ed
HELLO: I have cut and lined with tape, the 5mm depron to mount the fuselage, but I can not bend it. I have seen the videos where it indicates how to make the fuselages, but I can not understand how the folds do. If I could clarify it, I would appreciate it. Greetings Vicente
2020- late :>(...only take the paper off were you glue the inside bottom down (former) .. extra piece goes in bottom the split... glue on paper wont hold/ cause paper will tear! all the ducked tape is on the 1 side all papered/the inside is all paper ..except the bottom .
As in my country I can not get Adams foam bord, i have only kind of deprom 4mm. I have tried your way of just compresing the lines, but find out that its either breaks, or sqush the depron while bending. So no luck for me. Unless I use the tape on other side, but then its hard to glue something on it. I have noticed the flite test way to cut small 2 lines on fold and remove the depron, then glue it together. Removing small stripe provide enough apace to depron to bend, but as using a glue it adds to a weight, and I guess is less as strong as straight folding method. So as experinced experimental airliner airplane builder ;-) , can you please advice what is the good way to achive nice square fuselage using just depron. Im aware that materials used by you an here in EU are differen an I may have to find my own way. But any help is appritiated. By the way, love your channel and keep up the good work. ;-)
I use depron as well. I first apply packing tape or even better document laminate (which you can apply with a normal iron). Then I cut all four score cuts on the side without the tape. Then I bend/break the foam on each score cut and make a "double bevel" (like flite test does on leading edges) by cutting 45 degree towards the score cut. After cutting use some fine sand paper to finish the bevel. Then you use a straight edge or a long peace of wood to bend the foam in tube shape. Bend it 90 degrees and further (around 135 degrees) so that it stays in 90 degrees without much strength when it relaxes. Then you can put glue in the bends one by one (in case of hot glue) and hold it against a straight edge until its cured.
@@the_real_foamidable hi, would really appreciate if you upload a video of that. Many countries have no depron but no dollar tree board, so would help a lot of people!
colored duck-tape / very recent bought alot from $ tree in lillian ,alabama... wasnt much on each roll . but i got several colors and few each 1 :>)......Bangood/china carrys alot
TAPE IDENTIFICATION? i have tried to find colored tapes under various headings. vinyl/plastic/duct all are horribly expensive! only clear package tape as you originally described can be found and it is not colored! exactly what type of tape are you using? its not packaging tape that only comes in clear!
im late 2020 :>) - but the flight test /a an b folds are much easier/seems stronger! basicaly all sides be 2 inch.. then leave last side 2 ..1/4... ..leave same thickness as foam(1/4 inch) will be remove all but last piece paper! watch a flight test .com build ..on youtube :>).. will unerstand! comes out perfect square! everytime
Has anyone else tried the Super 77? I just tried it but when I untaped the fuselage tube after 24 hours it just came apart. I took the paper off the joiner piece, sprayed it with 77 in the garage, walked it inside and clamped it in place. Really I did everything just like in the video. I've used Super 77 for foam board planes before but for those I sprayed both surfaces and it went together very securely like contact cement. In this case you can only spray on one surface. Anyway, I'll try again with the white gorilla glue.

This is the first time I've ever come across someone that can really teach. Thank you.
Some of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. Nothing is left unexplained or knowledge assumed. Great Job.

How do you get the depron to hold its shape? Mine is under a tremendous amount of outside tension, even after scoring and bending.
Just built one it's flying sweet, with park 450 motor I can do loops and rolls in the sky.
The airplane glides forever with throttle down. Thank You!

Thanks a lot, all the other channels glossed over the details but this was great!
I've been designing a twin otter using your methods and I've found that for the most part, your fuselage tube works as a very scale fuselage

Thanks much, your information will keep me entertained for many of the following months doing the mischief I love so much.
Your videos are very informative and very professional in quality. Thanks.
I know that film is from 2013 but its awesome! Thanks for fantastic video that teaches you'r techniques. Sub on the way!
Another very informative and very well produced video from Ed.
BUT I did miss the usual 'EA' video intro
I wish we had access to foam board over here!
Awesome Ed! Thanks for doing Depron too.
Gostei muito do seu aero e estou aqui pra dizer que o Brazil está assistindo seus vídeos

Great building method you have. From your fleet, can you recommend a plane suitable for a beginner. ( Very forgiving with lack of flight experience? )
Thanks Ed for update!
Awesome video tutorial ED very well explained thumbsup
How about a GWS Slow Stick build using the Armin wing , and fuselage method ? With details on parts used for great flights ...
yaa another video im always glad to see a new experimentalairlines vid in my subscription's keep up the good work ed

Cutting two 45° angles( just like the relief cut for control surfaces) on the insides would make a cleaner corner.
It would indeed....
But he wants softer, rounded corners.
I think for small planes it doesn't add much weight to a fuselage if it is solid

spray spirit or alcohol with water (1:1), let it dry and peel. swoosh Magic.

2020 late ,but you basicaly put a presure mark with the end of barbeque sqeer.... dont cut it.. makes a weak spot.. so bends there!
Do you take the paper off then put the tape on? or put the tape over the paper? Iv tried watching your videos cant tell. ( dollar tree foam)

i just made a fuselage using your technique its 4 inches tall 6 inches wide and 35 inches long. its going to be a cargo plane.

Tanks for the information
Please could you show us how to make an armin wing in depron.

I had the same results with the Super 77 so I went back to his old process and used Hot glue. It works well.
Also, if you don't mind me asking, and I by no means mean to offend, what happened to you left hand? Was it an accident or were you born with it?
I don't want to be mean but what happened to your left hand?
Amateur pyrotechnics for skydiving + many surgeries = funky looking hand, with index finger transplanted to lost thumb position.
Why not tape the tube once its in the correct shape?
I tried a small piece of depron and it broke.
I can't wait to build one !!! and crash to
smokster0604 Crash and build more! Cheap and easy.
ExperimentalAirlines what size of foam board do you use and or where can I get some cheaply as I'm in the UK?
