It is my hope that builders get creative and change/add as many things as possible to these designs. Landing gear is a great idea. It's a little hard to anticipate all the possibilities. I will plan a video at some point. In general I will say that using plastic gift cards glued inside and outside the foamboard fuselage tube makes a strong reinforcement and good landing gear attachment point.
That is a great idea for the very diligent builder. That is one of the corners I cut for this operation. I personally clamp the hell out of the fuselage joiner but if you were using less secure means then the glue squeegie trick would probably solve the issue.
Thanks Ed for another great idea .I have made 2 the original way now I will try a couple this way .should build my Ck.evidence enough to start a wing soon
One of my favorite glues for foamboard is wallpaper seam repair adhesive. Also Elmers Craft Bond Aerosol contact adhesive will not eat foamboard. It is available at WallyWorld and most fabric stores.
@gKadonoff Mine are a little bit squishy against the corners but never enough to cause a problem, at least up to the 4" plus sizes. Options include installing one or more square foamboard bulkheads inside the tubular structure or installing cross-members of foamboard inside from corner to corner, both ways. The cross-members are better if you need to pass through wires, etc. The bulkhead method is very strong but takes a little effort to fit precisely. You can always penetrate for wires.
You could, but have never noticed the need to in the Noob Tube. I have only noticed any deformation in the upper fuselage tube of the Axon, and added some gift card cross bracing.
I am building a 60" wing span, 45" long fuslage, twin motor fpv plane, using your techniques. Have you ever come up with a rule of thumb for coming up with the dimensions of a box section fulsage joiners like you used on the Peace Drone? I am joining a 30" 3"x3" to a 15" 3"x2" tail section. Thanks
Awesome tips, thank you. Any suggestions for a round fuselage? I'd like to build a fw190. Would be great if you have ever made a round fuselage video (link please). Many thanks.
It is called Readi-Board and is made by RL Adams Plastics in the USA, and sold mostly by The Dollar Tree stores here. See my Armin Wing videos for more details. A few other foamboards will work as long as the paper comes off easily just by pulling.
Have you ever put any kind of lateral bracing inside the fuselage tubes before you complete it? I have found that my fuselage tubes are strong length ways but not so when you apply any kind of force against the corners.
For spray glue try. Elmer's Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. Works on Dollar Store foam. Doesn't dissolve foam!. Can be found in some Dollar Stores for less then 4 dollars for 4 oz. can. Dries to permanent bond in about half hour.
There are some details in the main fuselage tube video. Just use different paper-removal intervals on each end of the foamboard, and when folded, the taper will occur.
I just built my first Newb Tube and I'm wondering about the torsianal rigidity. do you install formers or some other internal structure to stiffen the tube?
Is there a downside to just having 2 full-width bottom flaps that overlap all the way to the folds, instead of trying to reinforce the two-half flaps butted together?
Since I'm making a tapered fuselage that ends up quite small at the tail, I have to use smaller clamps. And for clamping, I'm about to use a 1/2 inch wide section of adjustable wall shelf support in place of the wider ally angle. The metal shelf support is very rigid and I will hopefully spread the pressure out sufficiently onto the scrap foam piece. Also, I'm going to have to cut the metal down a little in thickness at each end, so I can get my clamps in as far as I can.
Great work Ed.I was wondering were you get your packing tape compared to your Duct tape. All I can find is the brand name Duck tape.Is there a difference or am I just over thinking it>thanks for all your videos and work. John
@quickpix123 I buy from TapeBrothers, look under "carton sealing tape". There are several online vendors but these guys seem to be pretty good in price, selection, and service.
I do use plenty of Duck brand duct tape but the packing tape is a different beast - much, much thinner and lighter so better for pre-covering broad areas. I recommend Tapebrothers com or you can search for "carton sealing tape".
Actually no formula has ever worked out, I just have to figure it out each time. I have never done different sized sections either, so that could be interesting.
I'm about to build my first foamy, and your videos are a really nice resource. Thanks for taking the time to make them. On a side note, the clamping technique that you use in this video is very familiar to me- using cauls to distribute the clamping force lets me do glue-ups in my woodshop without breaking out 47 clamps and a brick. I have been using bowclamps for several years now; they are too stout for foamboard, but there might be a more suitable material to make cauls from. bowclamp.com
I want to say I appreciate your videos. I've been using your technique and building all kinds of flying contraptions.
Bless you brother..

Did it today for two fuselages. Works fine. The outside board I don't need if the desk is really smooth. Thanks, so I will go to the next steps.
Great video, Ed! The passion of your work always shows in the quality of your work.
Thanks for your recent video! As always, you do an excellent job of showing & explaining your work.
Hi Ed - Your videos are wonderful. Very informative, clear and understandable. Thank you so much for sharing.
excellent I really like your modifications to the process. Thanks Much
Good Idea on joining the fuse . Glad I looked at this before starting mine :-)

Would love to see some videos on your tapered fuselage's like that glider.
oh man im so glad you made this doing it the other way sucked! but this is awesome
Looking forward to trying the tube method for my next plane. Looks like you have it down pretty good. Going to dollar tree today to see.
Beautiful work!

You are a teacher
Did it this way came out awesome great tip.
Nice innovation and explanation. Thank you.
You're greaaat seriously great lessons

Great video as always but my fuselage tubes are already made so gona stick with them :) Making the axon now.

Great work .Would it be feasible to do a tapered fuse ?As in thinner at the tail ?
Awesome Tip. Thanks, and keep um coming
very cool method, thank you for sharing!

How do you taper the fusage lodge like. 2 1/2 up front and 1 inch in back thank you looking forward to more of your his Robert PS nube tube
hello, pretty cool vid, can you please tell me what kind of foamboard you are using?
thanks, grettings from peru.

@quickpix123 Grainger is also good if you have one nearby. That way you can pick it up at their will call add avoid shipping cost.

John
just a newbee at foam rc building. Want to build a NOOB plane. Was wondering what size fuselage is recommended. Thx
@experimentalairlines can I use 5 min epoxy to join?
@usarmyfl1 It's easy to do. Look into this video: "Foamboard Building Techniques: Fuselage Tubes Ideas and Variations"
That's perfect !
Good videos but what did you make for $1.00 US. " and packing tape. costs about US$1 per tube to make. "
@quickpix123 I buy from TapeBrothers, look under "carton sealing tape". There are several online vendors but these guys seem to be pretty good in price, selection, and service.
you could always use something like dove tails to make the join might take long but will be stronger but would use less materials
ExperimentalAirlines What is stongerand lieghter . . what your doing or fibre glass ?

@onetradgicstory Oh yeah, my kids bonk me on my head all the time.
