  • An extremely rare piece of comedy history. Sourced from a VHS tape copied from betamax recorded on BBC2 back during its only airing in 1983

What a wonderful upload - thanks so much. Since the spectacular transformation of both London and the BBC into bland soulless products extruded from a weave of profitable public school connections and designed to exhibit an exclusive wasteland of luxury artless mediocrity ... it's nice to remember it wasn't always that way. And Alexei Sayle is the king of not that!

You're welcome. Was worried this gem would be lost forever.

Kinky John you used some fancy words there I'm gonna have to look up. Nevertheless, I like your comment. Spot on. Bring back the early 80s!

Great upload. I'll go so far as to say a crucial historical document. Of course I watched it when it was first broadcast but that was sufficiently long ago that it's as good as a new discovery. A long overdue reacquaintance with a best mate. The prospect of parts 2 and 3 will sustain me through the tedium of work tomorrow.

No problem. The real thanks go to my mate's dad who recorded this back in 82 when I think was the only time it aired. Shame we don't know where the original

I recall being turfed out into the glare of the afternoon sun as recently as the early '90s - practically yesterday. Hard, hard times.

Well done on uploading. An amazing find for us. I wonder if the BBC have the original? Or did they wipe over it as part of their disgraceful policy of not archiving our artistic & cultural heritage?

Thanks. You're probably right. They did seem to have a habit of deleting things. Seems strange how it's never been repeated. I would be nice if it does still exist and we could see a high-quality version. Although, I think half the charm is the crummy 1980s betamax quality.

Having read Alexei's 'Stalin ate my Homework', I thought I understood his teenage quest to get into pubs, but until I saw this video, I didn't realise it was a quest to drink something ordered as 'a pint of bitter' but served 0:50 as a pint of pale translucent yellow-coloured piss-water which must be lager.

I'm surprised Alexei didn't have a Fatwa put on his head for that Ayatollah joke at 6.10.

this is very weird for me. for years my dad suffered a compulsion to call all men john. he used it to hide hisprofound inability to remember names. now at last i know where he caught it from

Great isn't it - to look back 40 years and realise that the people , shows, etc you though were gut-bustingly hilarious weren't actually that funny and were quite boring. Ah, the sweet innocence of youth and the terrifyingly, cold, numb, true reality of old age.
