- The type of iron shafts that you use can make a huge difference in how your clubs feel. But does it make a huge difference in how they work perform?
We put the KBS Tour X130 Shafts up against the KBS R80 shafts. The club of choice was a Takomo 301 CB 5 Iron. The results really surprised Tim and might be a big surprise to many of you as well.

I don’t often see a player who should be swinging a stiff or extra stiff shaft using a regular flex, but I see A LOT of players who should be in a regular flex playing stiff or extra stiff (a lot of ego involved in this game).

Honestly not a bad plan! Shaft weight is the bigger deciding factor so if you prefer the weight of the KBS 120s then it’s probably the right call.

for someone who is strong and has a higher swing speed, ya really need to have an easy tempo with regular shafted clubs because if you get a little quick, left it is lol. i do feel like i see too many club fitters fitting people with stiff shafts when they should probably be at the regular or regular +. even though the difference wasn't so huge as far as numbers go, it all has to do with the players swing speed and overall tempo. awesome info and sweet video!
Not surprised one bit. Mark Crossfield has been doing these test for years.. Like you said it’s more of a feel thing. IMO it matters more for the weighting if seniors or women are using them. They can swing a lighter club faster and sometimes more accurately to hit the sweet spot

I’d be curious to the see the ones you filtered out. The good shots are going to be pretty much the same, it’s the bad shots with each that would sway me one way or the other.
The bad shots were largely from going between two shafts that felt different in weight. So it took some swings to get used to them. If I only hit the R80 shaft and got used to it then maybe the misses would be a good thing to worry about. Could be a good idea for a future test actually. - Tim
It makes a bigger difference for the person who needs and uses the lighter shafts. I can absolutely smoke my wife’s irons with 40 gram Project X Lite flex shafts. But she can’t hardly swing my 125 gram Stiff Aeroflex shafts. Interesting results regardless 👍🏻
Ya the shaft weight can definitely make a big difference for golfers. The weight of the x flex shafts would definitely make them harder for some golfers to use. - Tim

Interesting - I also thought they would have been a bit more of a difference.
It was primarily a feel difference. But I was genuinely surprised at how well I hit the MAX R80 shaft. Definitely could play them. - Tim
Those cooper ones are sexy as hell, how are they holding up in long term. I know they are somewhat new version

Off those groupings I’d say you might want same weight with less stiffness. Should net you same yardage consistency with better grouping.
Not a bad thought! May have to experiment with that once some new swing changes I’m working on have gotten a bit more engrained. - Tim

What was the difference in flight, launch angle, etc ?
Forgot to check the launch angle but the peak height was super similar (R80: 105ft - X130: 109ft) and the spin rates were basically identical so the flights were very similar.
