- The ultimate goal is to get to a point where I can ceramic coat our new C6 Corvette. There's a lot of steps to get there and we are on the clay bar step. Thanks to r/AutoDetailing on Reddit and Larry at AMMO NYC for all the help.

True. I started using clay with a mix of 10% liquid glycerine (5 bucks a L.). This way the liquid stays a bit more time there. Now I use just plain water, just keeping in mind that I have to wet the surface more.
great video, I've been using water for years but I keep my hose on mist while claying
Thanks! Much appreciated and good idea.
i just use cheap window cleaner for great results
good to know we can use the clay bar with water, nice try and really helpful!
Great video
I was wondering why couldn't we use just water when clay baring , the main reason is they making money lol they also say if you drop your Clay bar in the floor you should throw it away and never use it again lol yeah so we can buy more clay bars lol dude it's like when shopping at the grocery store theres over 1000 different types of cereal yet their pretty much all the same lol
Just a bunch of companies selling us a bunch of shit lol
True story
I just claybared my truck using only distilled water as a lube. It worked great. I dont know why anyone would use anything else. Like you, my mind was on keeping the surface clean of slick stuff and other contaminates before putting down a sealant. I didn’t think the sealant would adhere well to Quick Detailer.
Awesome! Glad it worked!
Good video,I do the same just my cars,I use pretty much the same 32 oz sprayer you are using with some distilled water from Walmart plus about 10 ccs of car wash soap in that bottle, works good for me,the bit of soap is just for lube if you get minor streaks do not worry because your compounding will take care of that.
Awesome thanks! :)
Yes! you nailed it here... save the detail spray wax stuff for touch up/missed areas only. Cost effective all the way.
And! You dont add unnecessary junk to the paint!
I think your right about the water, corporations just want you to buy buy buy! It may be a little better with their line but I think I could live with the difference. Good vid and thank you.
I’ve been using soapy water. But I also have that detail spray I use it for when my paint is dusty I give it a nice wipe with a clean microfiber towel is has lubricants so that u won’t scratch anything
Amazing. Got drunk and thought the same exact thing. Why pay the 7 $ for spray, maybe alil ultra dawn and warm water do the same.
Hell, not even dish soap some times is fine.
god damn i am drunk a shit
Just a heads up for anyone reading this. Dawn or any dish soap will break down your clay bars unfortunately, so I wouldn't recommend it. To the people complaining about marring the paint... If you're going to use even a mild claybar on anything other than silver or white you SHOULD be polishing the surface afterwards anyway.
Medium/ Heavy on most paint colors will marr the painted surface even if you have little baby soft hand pressure as well so yeah.... Water alone will do the trick. No need to add ANYTHING else to the mix unless you're in extremely heavy heat/ direct sunlight. A couple of drops of VG (vegetable Glycerin) to a 32oz bottle will be enough lubricity at that point.
I think the part about "adding chemicals to ur already custom wax mixture will harm it" idea a little loosely based . I mean professionals make this stuff ... u dnt think they account for that in Thier formula? however I do think water is good but u shld be using distilled water. less contaminants than tap;) 1$ gallon at Walmart
Yes ! This makes so much sense. A gallon of distilled water is $1.
I think that soapy water helps to degrease, glide and dry less.
yes, but it adds things back into the paint, not really helping it clean.
Not really much new ,, i knew this stuff for the past 20 years pretty common knowledge... You could even add a little soap to the water very little to help lube it..But I would use water only
Thanks for sharing
Did my car when it was lightly raining (was summer time).
Great video

That is 100% true. I bought my clay bar kit and came with the exact same quick detailer and I get through 3/4 of the car and I was like, ah. Well what would I use now? Shortly after it started to rain I was like, I wander if I could clay bar now when it's fine rain? That worked amazingly well. So then I tried tap water in a spray bottle and it works the same.
Yessir!!
So wash, clay bar, polish then ceramic coat.
Does the polish wax have to be stripped off before putting the ceramic coating on.
Buffing and polish wax are not the same thing. Buffing requires you to remove the compound. Do not add wax.
I have some detail spray left only a little , what if I mix the spray with water to make a full bottle of lubricant??
You can but it will still have contamination
Not sure if you mention it, but can I use the Maguires quick detailer for lubricant and use the clay bar instead of water ?
Yep, you can. The reason I mentioned water is that it won't introduce anything else into the mix like quick detailer would. Waxes and other stuff.
Excellent video man! I got natural spring water to use. Gonna do this to a few econo cars we got
Look at you Mr fancypants
Dude thankyou this is the only vid I could find that wasn't filled with marketing and your right detail spray does contain wax type stuff and that only leads you to another chemical bro product you would need
Sure thing, glad I was able to help.
Sweet!
Subbed I was hoping I pushed your channel to the ten K mark but you are close
Thanks! its VERY close! :)
Now What if you mixed the bottle of product with a bottle of water ?🤔
You begin to dilate time backwards
Deionised water would be best especially as my water is heavy in lime.
Yep, distilled would be best overall, but I'm cheap
What was step 3 and 4
also another idea is buy a gallon of distilled water at you grocery store i get then for a dollar
Also decent idea for cheaper than the cleaner spray
Polish step required for a brand new car? I wanna go straight from claybar to ceramic coating
You might be able to with brand new paint.
Hi, thanks for the great video. Can you use water with a clay cloth? Thanks.
I'm not familiar, perhaps?
peigeons i know thats u bro
👍👍
I use No wash and some RO water. It helps to have some slide in there.
good to know
wow you saved me alot of monies and trouble!! thanks!
Any time. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video
No problem!
Thanks for the video and tip about water - it makes infinitely more sense to me than dealing with the overspray of a "detailer" type product. And as you say, you're usually claybaring in advance of a wax, so what put another chemical between your freshly cleaned paint work and your expensive way product. Well done.
You got it man. If you have time, a sub would be nice :)
Can i keep the clay into water after use?
You could, but not sure why you'd want to.
Crazy I got a black c6 too z51 ls3
Nice! Black is tough to do. I do love my Z07 :)
Honestly, Optimum No Rinse is very cheap, and it is easy to throw a capful in a spray bottle of distilled water. It is a polymer and leaves very little residue if left to dry and it provides plenty of lubrication.
If you're serious about detailing and vehicle care you are doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't have it on hand. It will change your life. 😁👌👍✌
I'll check it out thanks
great explanation bro really helpful!
anytime!
Use plumbing puddy for clay bay it cheaper and does the same thing
I always see clay bar systems sold with some sort of clay lube or quick detailer. But if I want to polish after claying wont the wax additive in the spray create some sort of barrier between the polish and the clear ?
Correct. Which is why I use water
Never use detail spray with clay baring use water or clay lube the detail spray is just building up what you want to take off for the ceramic coating clay lube is way better by chemical guys
There's almost 47 seconds of non-babble and useful info here. Sorry, but get on with it...
Water and Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.. just a cap full to a spray bottle.
Wouldn't that leave contaminants?
Ppl just go on and on instead of talking about how to do the job ffs
What about soapy water like Dawn and water
Soapy water still has junk in it from the soap and other things like wax. I wouldn't do it.
Dish soap like Dawn damaged a cars clear coat.
So my questions is: If you use a mix of soap and water, do you immediately rinse it off and wipe with a micro-fiber towel prior to it drying or flashing, or does it not matter of you covered an area and leave it , (as it will dry) to finish the rest of the car and then rinse it all off? In other words does the soap leave a residue if you move onto a different part of the car or will it wash off even if it has dried on? Thanks
it will eventually dry and get washed off over time but straight water is better because it doesn't have all the extras like soap does.
@@GearheadDaily I thought you had done an 1-8 soap/ distilled water mix?
@@jeffreinardy7570 nope just straight water
So plain water and clay-ing is acceptable for most panels ?
Yep!
@@GearheadDaily I tried the tip trick this Sunday it worked so well . Just highly dilluted shampoo and plain water 1:50, I put inside a empty window cleaning spray bottle . And used for claying
Awesome! Glad it worked :)
