Russian and Ukrainian are similar but not the same. In Ukraine there live also lot of Russians, many Ukrainians have also Russian ancestors as it is the case of Zelensky (russian jews). Zelensky was comedian before becoming President and worked also in Russia

The Kievan Rus' is the predecessor to both Ukraine and Russia. It's basically Ukraine plus Moscow and a bit more. Ukraine gave Moscow it's charter, over centuries the nation moved east. Eventually they became different nations but shared some language. It's like the USA and England if the USA was Russia.
Ukraine is a bilingual country, regardless of the Russia-Ukraine war that's happening now, historically, Ukraine studies Russian language like how Americans have to learn Mexican language, or how Canada has to learn French.
