  • From the Walter Vaughn WIL-AM/FM archives, St. Louis, Missouri - two telephone interviews with Hank Williams Jr. done in 1973. (First interview is from August 15, 1973, and unfortunately the tape ends prematurely; the second interview is undated but is presumed to be from the same year due to the records discussed by Walter and Hank.
Taken from Mr. Vaughn's archive tapes and presumed to not have been heard since originally broadcast on-air.

There are 3 basic reasons that I love this interview. The first reason is that it proves, as I have said for years, that Hank, Jr. had a completely different voice before the mountain fall. Many people have told me that I was crazy when I told them that the mountain fall changed Hank Jr’s voice. My second reason for loving this is that it shows Hank, Jr. at a time before the mountain fall when I believe he was happy. The wife that is referred to in this interview is Gwen. Gwen is Hank 3’s mom, and Hank 3 is the little boy that he is talking about. Many people know that Hank, Jr’s, and Gwen’s marriage was full of mountains and valleys. This interview seems to have been done at a time when they were standing on a mountain. My last reason for loving this interview is that it proves that Hank, Jr’s personality really didn’t change much after the fall. Hank Jr still loved the country, to hunt, and to fish even before the mountain fall. I feel obligated to say that I have all of Hank, Jr’s MGM albums and that I prefer his MGM stuff to the later stuff. The interview also mentions the song The Last Love Song. There is little debate that Your Cheating’ Heart was Hank Williams’ masterpiece. The Last Love Song is, and always will be, Hank, Jr’s. masterpiece.

Jr. changed his voice on purpose when he went outlaw. On his Friends album (pre fall) he had changed his sound. He can still sing exactly like his daddy when he wants to.

@@LT1HILLINGHOE His was the same on Frieds as it always had been. You can tell the difference in his voice on One Night stands; which was the first album he recorded after the fall.

Yeah, I am a die-hard Hank jr. Fan, so this recording is in 1973.
This is the same year he was in Montana on top of Ajax mountain, when he was crossing a snow shelf when it collapsed. Following 500ft, hitting the jagged rocks as he fell his head and face made significant contact with the mountain's edge before coming to a rest. It was a miracle but he was still alive and conscious but he knew he was and serious serious trouble. He knew his eyes , nose, and mouth were all out of place, his jaw totally out of place, when his friend finally got down to him he could see that is skull was cracked open and could see a part all of his brain. This is all true and documented.
This is why after a long long time of recovery he started wearing the cowboy hat, the shades, and the beard, so he could hide the scars. He sings about it in his songs.
Hank jr. Had 17 reconstructive head and facial surgeries, 2 years of recovery learning how to talk, chew, and sing again.

Actually, it's two recordings combined. And I'd forgot that was the year that all happened. Did that happen before or after 'And Friends' came out?

Before the accident, but he wrote a lot of music 🎵 while he was recovering from his injuries. Listen to the song,
