Perfect timing and great video as always, thank you! My little one is almost 6 months, she sits at the dining table with us at lunch and dinner time every day and is showing lots of interest in food. We will be starting with purees and as we gain confidence may add some finger foods. As a first time Mum all these different developmental stages have been nerve racking (and exciting), but your great videos have made it so much easier and smooth sailing. Thank you, Emma!

When my baby turned 4 months, her pediatrician said she could be introduced to solids 3 times a day. I didn’t think she was ready. So I waited until she was about 5 and half months. At 4 months I just started adding baby cereal to her milk. She’s almost 9 months now and I still spoon feed her with purées I make from steaming vegetables and blending them with some water until they get to the consistency I know my baby can eat it. It’s a process, as Emma said in the video. And if your baby doesn’t want to eat, don’t stress out! They are just exploring in the beginning. Their main source of nutrition is milk until 12 months of age. So just go with the flow! 🙂❤️ Thank you, Emma! Your videos are better than my pediatrician’s advices sometimes. 🤭
Our baby's doctor said the same thing. She took to solids pretty quick. She is almost 6 months and she is up to a whole tablespoon of oatmeal every morning and eating one whole container of puree of a fruit or veggie for lunch or dinner.

Thank you so much for this video! It honestly helped me so much. There is so much information out there I was really confused. This has simplified it for me and I now know some of the things I was doing wrong, and I feel more confident now about feeding my baby solids :)
I tried starting my baby on solids at 6 months but she just wasn’t interested and it made me get very discouraged. It took a long time for me to just let her go at her own pace. She’s 19 months old now and if I would’ve just been more relaxed about it, I would’ve seen that eventually she would come around when she was good and ready. Now I’m pregnant with baby #2 and I know what I need to focus on for myself.
It can be very stressful with baby #1. There is a lot of information and pressure to overcome. I am sure the experience you gained with your first born will make it easier and less overwhelming with baby #2. Wishing you all the best!

Good morning! Thank you so much for your guidance and videos! I have a question-my sweet boy started showing interest in food at around 3 months, so at his 4 month appointment his pediatrician gave the green light to start introducing solids. He LOVES them. It’s been so much fun to watch him enjoy new foods. I always nurse him before he gets any solids, and right now I’m giving him two solid meals a day (he is 5.5 months old), one late morning, and one after his last nursing of the day. My concern is that I’m giving him too many solids… I offer about 4 TBSP at each meal, and usually that’s plenty in the morning, but in the evening he is still open mouth wanting more. I haven’t offered more because I am afraid of giving him too much-should I follow his lead, or should I continue to limit how much he gets? (His evening meal usually has sweet potato, avocado, maybe some eggs, green beans, squash, some combination of this with added EBM just because I want him to have enough milk.) He is actually a pretty lean baby, and he is super active, rolling, bouncing and inch worming all over the place! I just want to make sure I’m doing what’s best for him. Thank you for your input!
My daughter is 4 months old and everyone keeps asking why she isn’t eating food yet.. I’m so glad to see this I felt like I was doing something wrong bc everyone says their kids were eating by 4 months.. she’s definitely not ready for foods yet
Hi Emma, we watch and love your videos very much. I have a question which I could not find reply anywhere. Our 5 months old baby has started to poo less frequently since he became 4 months old. Before that he was normally passing 3-4 soft stool per day, but since the day he became 4 months old, it became less frequent like once in 2-3 days. Our childcare service suggests giving fruits like pear, but we want to start solids when he is 6 months. Thanks!
Babies decrease the number of stools per day when they grow out of the newborn (0-3 months) stage. My pediatrist told me it's normal for my 5month baby to do 1 stool a day to
Hi Emma, thank you so much for all these very helpful uploads. My daughter is 7 months old, and we started introducing solid foods about a month ago. However she showed her rejection of the food by keeping her mouth shut or turning her head away, every time we tried, whether it was puree or finger food. We also tried BLW a few times. She would grab the food but would not try to put it in the mouth. If we eat in front of her, she would look at the food and reach out for it, but again she would not put it in her mouth and would reject our attempt of bringing the food to her mouth. Does this mean that she is not interested in the food?
Thank you for all the informative videos. Please can you give info re the time line for weaning. Our 11 month old is eating a variety of food, but very tiny amounts and when it suits her. She has had very severe acid reflux and still struggles with digestion. What is an acceptable time period for her to adjust, we prefer letting her lead us, but would like guidance and reassurance as we are not comfortable with the current trend of reducing milk to force solids and having baby on mainly solids by the first birthday
Hi! The time line to wean your little one really depends on your preference. At this age, I would suggest that you offer your little one solids before you offer her milk as she may naturally start to have more solids and then naturally gradually reduce the amount of milk she is having. I hope that helps!
The first food we offer them will have to be the consistency of breastmilk? As someone over RUclips was telling this. Plz suggest first few meals to be offered and its consistency
Could you do a video on how much of solids should a baby consume in a day and what are the timings, like after having milk or before. I am following a mixture of both the approaches, but my baby who is 7 month old seems to be just having two or three spoons and as we are not supposed to distract or force feed them Question arises on whether the nutritional requirements are met or not And yes wanted to add Your videos are really good and very helpful Keep doing the good work 💕💕
My baby has all signs of readiness except she keeps pushing food out with her tongue. We started purees at 5 months and she is 6 months today. Is there any advice on helping her reduce her tongue thrust or is it just something she'll learn over time? I'm not convinced she's getting much food at all because of this 😅
Hi Emma, I love your videos. They are very informative. Thank you. My twin girls turned 6 months old few days back. My doctor advised to start solids twice a day- one at lunch time and other in the evening. He has given a diet plan and i am following that. My babies have not yet started sitting on high chair. I am spoon feeding them solids by making them sit on my legs. Please advise if that is ok. I let them sleep for about 14 hours in the day. Is that ok too? Thanks
Hi Mikki! If your little one is showing these signs you still don't have to start solids straight away. I would recommend holding off until the little one is 6 months of age, as their oral motor, fine and gross motor skills are generally more developed at this age and this makes it easier to introduce solids.
This video was brilliant. My 23wk old twins weren't satisfied with their bottles anymore and were watching me eat and mimicking me eating so I've just started spoon feeding to see if they were ready. My son is, and his sister is interested but her tongue reflex is still not quite there but I'm giving her a little to get used to it. Going to start the baby led weaning once they get the hang of the eating motions. Did not know about bottles before though, was giving bottles after 😅😂
Hey Emma ! I am 24 with my first. My baby is 5 months and I’ve been giving her carrots and apples , just a little at a time. Could you please tell me when I can start introducing meats like chicken and beef in purée form ?? Also , I really need a recommendation for her constipation because she’s solely on formula and not breast milk 😢 we don’t have prunes here where I live and pears aren’t in season , so I could really use some guidance ! Thanks doll
Thank you so much my baby is 5 and half and after 6 month i am planning to start bottle or formula milk for first time can you send me some tip about measurement…….
My son is 14months old and still taking semi solid food like porridge and cereal, he can bite any food but he doesn’t know how to chew it so every tiny bite he keeps 5-10min in his month Even he has almost 14teeth in his mouth including molars. So we are doing feeding therapy classes but still situation is same he doesn’t want to eat semi solid food and purée also and with solid food he is unable to chew it. I don’t know what to do🤦♀️
here is a tip: save your breastmilk. its good for them when they get sick. also use the breastmilk to clean their faces. when you finally do feed the baby, a little squirt of breastmilk in the food.
I'm in some mom groups on Facebook and so many of them think that just because their baby is interested in food they're ready. That's it. It's so frustrating because there's so many other things indicating their baby isn't ready and then I see the posts "what am I doing wrong?" Oh Idk....you didn't wait long enough🙄
well I have child nr4, he was ready at 4months, as his siblings, all idicators given. Not every baby is ready, but some are. Y'all think you know what's best for another persons child, you don't bcs you do not know the baby. exceptions confirm the rule.
My baby does have all the signs for readyness but... sometimes he wont open his mouth for the spoon and sometimes he would oush the food out with his tongue...(pureed food or cereals) is blw then a better option? I feel so overwhelmed and confused and just unsure on if im doing something right or wrong...
Hi Emma. I have a 6 months old he does not show any of these signs of readiness for food including not being able to sit with minimal support. Can you advise if we should nevertheless start w solids or wait it out?
What are your thoughts about starting rice cereal or oatmeal at 4 months? My pediatrician said to start the rice cereal at her 4 month checkup, but since then I've seen a lot of mixed reviews and opinions about starting that early. I have tried a very runny version (mostly breast milk) of the rice cereal and oatmeal and maybe half of it ends up actually eaten (the rest ends up on her or the bib lol).
Hi @Jennifer Reynolds as your little one's ped recommend you start at 4 months of age I would always follow their advice (as they saw your little one in person). f you are feeling uncomfortable starting at 4 months I would recommend you discuss this with your ped. And you could also ask why they recommended you start with rice cereal as you can start with any pureed food (which might be a little more tasty for your little one). If you do decide to start now, then at 4 months of age your little one is definitely going to need support (rolled up towel etc) to sit upright for mealtimes. So do make sure you check out this video to find out how you can set up the high chair to best support your baby: ruclips.net/video/ewM5oQaxcZM/видео.html.
My little one will be four months old next week. Last week our pediatrician said I could start him on food now. I've started with the powdered rice cereal. In the mornings he gets a very liquidy version mixed with milk in his bottle. We wanted to see how his body took to it before giving him the correct ratio of powder to formula. So far no alergians and poops seem fine. So now we add a 1tps serving spoon fed in the evening with a drink bottle to help "wash it down" between every couple of spoons. So far he loves it, get's excited, mouth wide open and chomps down on the spoon. If I wait too long between spoonings he grunts and gets grumpy and reaches for the spoon lol. He had yet to eat the full 1tbs, he does let me know when he is finished with it by his gestures wether he is full gets board, or just wants the bottle now. There was a neurologist on the morning news last week that is done a study on the connections between nutrients and the babys brain development at certain stages of development. She says babys should be having dark leafy greens/broccoli/zucchini etc because of the lutein for eye/vision development starting at 4 months. As I've been reading and searching for the est things to start with there is just so much varying information between specialist/doctors and countries standards.
Hey Emma hope to have your thoughts on this. My baby is 4 months and is showing all the signs according to this video. Her pedia advised to give her juice and water. Can we do so?
HI Mikki, juice is not something that we recommend in Australia under the age of 12 months of age. But in saying that, I always recommend checking back in with the Paediatrician to check why they are recommending juice as your Paed sees your little one in person. At 4 months of age you could introduce your little one to water using an open cup or straw cup, but it is mainly just exploratory at this point as formula or breast milk will provide their fluid intake. If you do decide to introduce these I recommend you watch this video to ensure you have the high chair set up appropriately, as 4 month olds generally need support to sit. ruclips.net/video/ewM5oQaxcZM/видео.html Hope that helps!
You mentioned giving an open cup, what are your views of a sippy cup, especially outside of meal times? Also I know that babies should still be drinking breast milk or formula for at least the first year, but how long should they be drinking from a bottle?
Hi @Zee I have a video on the different types of baby cups, including sippy cups which you might find helpful. Here is the link in case you would like to watch it:ruclips.net/video/KJddjcDLagU/видео.html
I just started my little one on solids but I gave her the food 1st then the bottle you suggested bottle first how long after should you give the solid?
My child it's over 5 months one teaspoon when start solids isn't enough. I started vegetable first but she is so hungry. I am afraid to increase the amount. What should I do? Thank you
why is it here in Norway its pkay to start at 4 months .. especially introducing potential allergens.. my baby is 4,5 months and cannot sit properly bjt is very steong in the head and can roll from back to tummy .. can i start a taste test? and when i do , should i put him in a high chair tho he could just support his head but not sit yet ?
My baby hates being strapped into anything so that means car seats and high chairs he is not inclined on being in (makes car rides fun lol) So when I feed him his mashed carrots (since we are just starting food) he is in my lap. I guess what I would like to know is if any other moms had trouble with this and how did they get their baby to not protest so much being in something that requires baby being strapped in.
We started solids a couple weeks ago! Baby is doing great (6.5 months old). We are currently using the Upseat with a tray attached instead of a highchair. The website says this is acceptable, but I'm wondering your thoughts! Love your videos!
Hi @Leah Kathleen so great to hear your little one is doing great with eating the solids. My preference is always using a high chair because when in a good high chair the feet are supported by a foot rest, there is a 5 point harness for safety and the bub can sit at the dining table with all the family. Hope that helps!
I’m confused though, is my baby considered 6 months at 6 legitimate months like Aug 9->Feb 9. Or when she hits 24 weeks? Are these guidelines based on 4 weeks per month or actual months?
You can look up how to calculate your baby's months by looking it up on Google. There's a couple of websites that you can put your baby's birth date in and it will tell you all the months from there. Sorry if this response is late but this could be useful for other people asking the same question.
Hi Emma, My baby is turning 6 months old tomorrow and is been recently started on solid foods. I am giving one thing a day and only in small amount for him to taste and feel the solid food. I want to start with finger foods instead of purée but bit concerned if it’s a chocking hazard or might make it uncomfortable as larger pieces might break from the finger foods especially since he is just introduced to solids and might not have a good coordination for swallowing except for liquids. In case if I start him on purée how difficult is it for babies to transition to finger foods from purée. Thanks! Pranita
Hi, new mom here got a 5.5 month old girl premie.Started solids recently but my biggest concern when spoon feeding is we start out fine but occasionally gags sometimes producing spit up. Getting a little discouraged here since she has the milestones, could it be her adjusted age? How can I help her to less gags during mealtimes?
from what i've heard gagging is totally normal. what is your babies adjusted age though? i have twin preemies and i'm pretty sure its suggested that you introduce things like this at adjusted age.

Wonderful video to new moms. It's help me a lot to. Can you please do videos on baby food chart for 6 months baby
Great suggestion!
Thank u so much. This video reduces my anxiety a lot…
Could you do a video on how much of solids should a baby consume in a day and what are the timings, like after having milk or before.
I am following a mixture of both the approaches, but my baby who is 7 month old seems to be just having two or three spoons and as we are not supposed to distract or force feed them
Question arises on whether the nutritional requirements are met or not
And yes wanted to add
Your videos are really good and very helpful
Keep doing the good work 💕💕
My baby has all signs of readiness except she keeps pushing food out with her tongue. We started purees at 5 months and she is 6 months today. Is there any advice on helping her reduce her tongue thrust or is it just something she'll learn over time? I'm not convinced she's getting much food at all because of this 😅
Hi Emma,
I love your videos.
Thanks
My baby loves watching us all the time, especially when we're eating. She's 7 weeks old 😂, interest alone is not enough to be ready for solids
Hi do you have a complete video on the preparation for the first feeding items? Like the kind of storage bowl, pot and etc.?
I was about to do research about this.... Thanks 🌼
I hope this helps!
Hi Emma, super thanks for this video. I am stressed over the moon because my baby is showing all the signs before 5 months!
Hi Mikki! If your little one is showing these signs you still don't have to start solids straight away. I would recommend holding off until the little one is 6 months of age, as their oral motor, fine and gross motor skills are generally more developed at this age and this makes it easier to introduce solids.
Hello Emma thank you so much for this but please what if your baby doesnt want to eat any solid food at all. No purees or mashed foods at all
My baby is 3 months old and already at this stage starting food as soon as he hits the 4 months line
Hello, Emma! The background music you used was quite fun. This is out of topic but may I know what is it?
Nope sorry - our amazing video editor choose this for us!
Is it ok to start your baby with bone broth?
This video was brilliant. My 23wk old twins weren't satisfied with their bottles anymore and were watching me eat and mimicking me eating so I've just started spoon feeding to see if they were ready. My son is, and his sister is interested but her tongue reflex is still not quite there but I'm giving her a little to get used to it. Going to start the baby led weaning once they get the hang of the eating motions.
Did not know about bottles before though, was giving bottles after 😅😂
Glad you found the video helpful!
I don’t know what to do🤦♀️
The way you have been with me since I brought my newborn home! 🥹 I know there are so many people grateful for your videos!!
here is a tip: save your breastmilk. its good for them when they get sick. also use the breastmilk to clean their faces. when you finally do feed the baby, a little squirt of breastmilk in the food.
Thank you for the useful video
Thank you so much 🙏 colleagues were encouraging me to force my baby to eat...
No worries at all
i got the munchkins metal like spoons with silicon around the spoon part. is that acceptable spoon?
thank you Emma for the education
Omg I needed this I really have to take my time
Hope it helps!
Gave birth 2 months ago and have a 6year old and I’m a bit rusty haha thanks for the vid! Appreciate it
Congratulations!! 🎉
God bless this woman❤
Thanks!
Same!!! I knw someone who started feeding her baby by 3 months gosh she can’t wait!!!!!
well I have child nr4, he was ready at 4months, as his siblings, all idicators given. Not every baby is ready, but some are. Y'all think you know what's best for another persons child, you don't bcs you do not know the baby. exceptions confirm the rule.

Same feeling 🥺 my baby is 3 month old
This is false. My sons pediatrician and dietician both said if baby is showing signs, they can try to eat purées.
Thanks..... Right at time!!!!
Me too!!
So glad! Hope it helps!
If you do decide to introduce these I recommend you watch this video to ensure you have the high chair set up appropriately, as 4 month olds generally need support to sit. ruclips.net/video/ewM5oQaxcZM/видео.html
Hope that helps!
Thanks a bunch!! Super appreciatr your response =)
Dear Emma if the baby was premmie are we still start at 6 months or at the adjusted age
What type of solid food I should give to my son?my son is now 5 months 25 days old and I will join my school soon , please suggest.
Love your channel !!helped me understand so much things thank u 👏👏
You mentioned giving an open cup, what are your views of a sippy cup, especially outside of meal times? Also I know that babies should still be drinking breast milk or formula for at least the first year, but how long should they be drinking from a bottle?
Hi @Zee I have a video on the different types of baby cups, including sippy cups which you might find helpful. Here is the link in case you would like to watch it:ruclips.net/video/KJddjcDLagU/видео.html
@@EmmaHubbard Thanks you!
I just started my little one on solids but I gave her the food 1st then the bottle you suggested bottle first how long after should you give the solid?
So grateful for this video. 🙏
My child it's over 5 months one teaspoon when start solids isn't enough.
I started vegetable first but she is so hungry. I am afraid to increase the amount. What should I do?
Thank you
"Such a helpful and informative video! Thanks for sharing your expertise and making the journey of feeding little ones easier and more nutritious!"
Thanks so much!
Thank you. Very helpful!
No worries!
why is it here in Norway its pkay to start at 4 months .. especially introducing potential allergens.. my baby is 4,5 months and cannot sit properly bjt is very steong in the head and can roll from back to tummy .. can i start a taste test? and when i do , should i put him in a high chair tho he could just support his head but not sit yet ?
Hey ……is it safe to give porridge that contains 12% sugar content for a 5 month old baby .thank you
Great video!! Thank you
Hi Ma'am
My baby is 4month old and not drinking milk. Our doctor suggested to introduce solids to him. What is the best solid food to introduce??
I don't need a splash mat, I have two dogs.
😂 our Golden Retriever is quick to catch anything that gets dropped as well
Good timing, my baby girl is 5 month old so soonish we will start solids and the info is very helpful :)
Fantastic! So glad this is helpful🙂
Such cute babies🥰
Where are the videos for the high chairs?? I feel like my son is not comfortable on the chair and it’s the second chair I tried.
My baby hates being strapped into anything so that means car seats and high chairs he is not inclined on being in (makes car rides fun lol)
So when I feed him his mashed carrots (since we are just starting food) he is in my lap. I guess what I would like to know is if any other moms had trouble with this and how did they get their baby to not protest so much being in something that requires baby being strapped in.
Do you recommend mixing puréed food with breast milk or formula?
Starting solids with my baby this week and mama is very nervous .
@@EmmaHubbard it does, thank you!!
This was so helpful ❤thanks so much
You're so welcome!
my baby is showing this sign at 4 months but I am still worried
might wait at 6 months
I’m confused though, is my baby considered 6 months at 6 legitimate months like Aug 9->Feb 9. Or when she hits 24 weeks? Are these guidelines based on 4 weeks per month or actual months?
You can look up how to calculate your baby's months by looking it up on Google. There's a couple of websites that you can put your baby's birth date in and it will tell you all the months from there. Sorry if this response is late but this could be useful for other people asking the same question.
Pls when can I start purée?
How long after the meal can I give him milk again?
My baby 6 months. He doesn’t like to eat. Even not opening his mouth. What should i do?
Want to wait or ??
Hi Emma,
My baby is turning 6 months old tomorrow and is been recently started on solid foods.
Thanks!
Pranita
Hi..so want did u introduce..pls help...my baby is also 6months now but m giving me only rice water
My son is doing this already at 3 months especially staring at my food and crying but I’m going to wait until 3 months
