I love this video! I’m a nutritionist and I have a 20 month old boy. I tend to feed him lots of fruits and veggies since we started solids and he loves them. I make sure he’s getting plenty of nutritious foods from all foods groups. I get people asking why I don’t give him high sugary juices or candy or junk foods and I always say because the food I feed him the first few years are for his growth and development. It sets the tone for his life. A sugary juice isn’t giving him any nutrient. I’m not saying I won’t ever let him eat it but right now isn’t the time.
I’m about to buy one, I had it in the back of my mind to buy and I just saw ur comment and I’m gonna go ahead and purchase it right now, ur comment was my go ahead 😂
Please avoid sugary foods for as long as possible!! Even when your child is 2, avoid vitamin gummies, fruit snacks, dried fruit, etc. they cause cavities so quickly in little baby teeth. We learned the hard way 😢
Most people in Nigeria don't go to the dentist all their lives and their teeth remains perfect. I was so surprised when I moved to America and someone was shocked I have never seem a dentist. She said it can't possibly be with that teeth. Not giving my life any sugars until they can take it themselves. I didn't know sugars existed as a kid, most of us in Nogeria didn't. Most packaged foods were for special occasions while day to day was natural / home processed foods
We’re starting our 4th on solids at 7.5 months (didn’t feel the need to add one more thing to our already busy lives any sooner than necessary 😂), but it’s been 6 years since the last one, so this is a good refresher! Thank you!
Stressed because our baby is 10 months old and we haven't been giving him enough solids. Starting with this list and will definitely work our way up. Thanks a bunch.
Keep in mind that in the first year the primary source of nutrition is breastmilk/formula. Starting solids during this time is about exploring different flavors and textures, introducing allergenic foods slowly to reduce the risk of allergies, developing chewing skills etc. You can start with one meal a day and gradually 3 times a day.
I’m on a roll here as a (hopefully) future mom watching all of your videos. You guys are parenting style goals!! I’m an info junkie so I love that you are well-informed, balanced, practical, and easygoing. Thank you so much!
Man you guys are truely amazing ! I love watching your videos ! I’m pregnant with my 2nd baby and i feel like i need a refresher on everything because my first is already 11yrs old ! So i feel like a noob starting all over again ! Thank you guys for all you do ! I appreciate it greatly! 🥰
Congratulations! I totally understand! My oldest just turned 13! & I just gave birth to my son 4 months ago. It’s definitely like starting over & there’s so much new information & resources that we didn’t have 10+ years ago. Good luck 💞
Great info!!! We're starting preparations for our 4.5 month old and we can't wait to get started! Do you think you could do a video covering basic infant choking-rescue/life support??
Oh my goodness - I let my baby try some canned beans I was eating with dinner tonight and had no idea about the botulism risk. THANKYOU and I will be sure to be more careful from here on.
Thank you guys! You are a great team. Was watching you through out my pregnancy and now with my baby. I really appreciate that I have an opportunity to get reliable information without going to the doctor. Thank you. You are the best 😊
If I could go through the screen and give you guys a hug I would 🥹🥹 I’ve been feeling so guilty that my baby is 7 months (6 corrected ) and I barely started solids.
Baby lead weaning is so scary for me. baby is 6 months gave her avocado and she choked so bad. Definitely starting with pures! Will definitely use the foods recommended though :)
In Europe, in particular in Sweden, pediatricians insist, yes, insist on giving babies liver. Yes liver. Because babies need a lot of iron for their development. But according to American pediatricians school, baby body can’t extract nutrients from the food. Which one is the right one?
This is helpful thank you but I thought babies cannot have any dairy products until they are one, you suggested yogurt at six month! Now I am confused and I am getting ready to start my 6 months old on solids here in a week or so
Start with veggies …..I don’t give baby and fruits for the first month. ( starting at 6 months of course) I like to get baby used to veggies before they prefer fruit due to higher sugar content.
What about iron-fortified cereals, like cream of wheat or oatmeal, for breast-fed babies? I was planning on using breastmilk instead of water or milk to cook those foods.
Thank you so much for the video!! When it comes to reducing the risk of choking, what sizes (avocado, banana, squash) should be avoided, and is it better to make foods less mushy, or more? We introduced steamed squash, however, our 6month old would squeeze the large crescent slices into much smaller pieces and I’m not sure if that defeated the purpose of the large slice to begin with.
great video, thanks so much for sharing! it’s especially good to see you promote whole foods and variety of flavors rather than the conventional highly processed, bland or sugary foods. in case it might be helpful for you and others here, i found “first bite: how we learn to eat” by bee wilson especially insightful. thanks again!
Could you guys please address choking? I just want to feel more confident in baby led weaning and how I can help my baby if they indeed do choke on something.
Very informative. We started out on purées for two months using Yumi to get a variety of fruits and vegetables in. Especially since the time of year we started, the fresh fruit and vegetables were not great. Have since moved onto food and at 9 months, he’s doing great. He’s allergic to milk and salmon so far. With a sensitivity to bananas. So finding any form of yogurt with no milk that is not too thick is awful. It’s either super runny (basically purée which he hates now) or too thick. So we use the organic yogurt mills from a company that uses coconut milk instead. Overall he loves all food so far. We did offer blueberries and grapes at 7 months cup up and smooshed, and he loved them. So just kinda working and finding what is good for your baby. But very informative for next time when I want to start out with just BLW.
Good luck! We so offer felt lost too, so know you’re in good company. Just keep offering new things - tastes, textures, and temperatures. Baby’s interests in certain food are going to change a lot from day to day too, so have fun!
Thanks for this! I was always told we had to do purées and I’ve been making purées my little guy is 6 months so I’m going to give your suggestion a try!
My older daughter when she was about 1 1/2 choked on a banana. Like couldn't breathe had to do baby CPR in public choking. It was really scary. I had no idea that could happen. At that age too, she had enough teeth.
I live in China and our baby eats a version of whatever we are eating. Eating with hands here is kind of frowned upon as being dirty, so many small items are just mixed in with a rice soup. He gobbles down everthing in front of him and has the most awesome daily shits that don't really even stink. Lucky me!!!
Mom watched my first born when she was 5 months and I walk in the house to see my daughter chewing on a chicken bone lol I panicked good to know it’s doctors approved
Opinions on introducing potential allergen foods like peanut butter and eggs at 4 mo? I’ve heard there’s a shift in thinking and that if you introduce them sooner rather than later they are even less likely to have an allergy?
Thanks for the information and well presented approach. A link to all the products you mentioned would be great. The spoon, the bib, and i see someone has mentioned the app already.. Also the link to the difference between gagging and choking would also be veey helpful. Thanks
What about using those pacifiers that have little wholes in them and you can put fruits and stuff inside them for the baby to kinda suck the juice out of it without choking.
Whenever you feel comfortable and baby can show they can swallow. Not everyone uses purées it’s not needed unless that’s easier for you. You can go straight to solids. Ask your pediatrician what they recommend though.
We actually didn’t use purées much at all. By having age-appropriate preparation of foods, babies can often start with many common whole foods. We loved the SolidStarts app for information about how to prep foods to be safe based on age.
Thank you for this informative video. One of our main concerns is baby having allergic reaction to food. What would be your advice and if you have any video on this?
Thank you for this!!! My son has taken a while to become really interested in table foods. He’s loved purées, yogurt ,and unsweetened applesauce for a while. He’s almost 8 months and crawling and he just woke up one day wanting to eat! He crawls over to his high chair and reaches up when he’s hungry lol. Heading to the grocery store for some bananas :)
Hello! Thanx for posting this amazing info. When baby is eatih solds should we lower the milk intake? By how much? Love you guys and fingers crossed for baby no 2 to come soon 🤞
I read that in the beginning that food starting out should be mainly for tasting and they won’t be getting too many calories from it so to continue regular milk intake until they are eating more
Up until 9 months of age, the solids are just for tastes and learning to eat. Almost all of their daily nutrition should still come from breastmilk/formula. After that age they start to be eating more and their desire for milk may start to drop off a little. After 12 months of age, milk consumption should ideally be only about 16-24oz a day max.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on a vegan diet for my infant. I was vegetarian for 10 years and have now been vegan for 5 years. It’s something that is very important to me and ideally I’d like my baby to have a vegan diet as well. My plan is to keep her on a vegan diet until she is old enough to make her own decisions about what she wants to eat (I just don’t like the idea of feeding her something I wouldn’t even eat myself). She is 7 months old. Is it okay for her to follow my vegan diet, or does this decision hinder her development in any way?
Thank you so much for this series! I appreciate your honesty (always, but especially) with baby gagging when starting solids. I'm thankful to be CPR certified - I hope to never have to use it.
For baby has eczema, and eczema easily triggered when they touch on stuff. Would you recommend trying baby led weaning method or parents feed for the first 3-6 months. Does baby's first food has to be puree food like rice cereal or oatmeal cereal if my rice is an important food in my culture but not in my family? And does it matter if i introduce rice cereal for 3 days, and then switch to other first food introduced in this video?
Actually banana and avocado didn’t work for our daughter as a first food. She was vomiting a lot after eating those. Cooked food worked just great. She was able to digest banana and avocado several months later, closer to a year.
This is what I used to do with my baby 10 and 7 years ago but with my 6 months old the doctor said to avoid banana and all the sweet potatoes and sugary veggies and fruit and start with meat for protein. Yay or nay?
Thank You My 7month old is about to start finger food eating ... and Can I just take a lil guess- the way you keep gwting tired while speaking, can it be because u are already pregnant ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊If So God Bless You all!
I know we want to avoid added salt, but is there a threshold for what’s acceptable? Like if we’re diluting a little nut butter to introduce the allergen, does it have to be completely salt-free? Thanks so much for these videos!
Small amounts of additional salt can be okay, but try not to make it a regular habit or to use a lot of you can. Diluting nut butters with water is usually sufficient. We also found using powdered peanut butter “PB2” was a nice option for this. You can also dissolve peanut treats like Bamba to make a slurry for early peanut exposure.
Yep my baby doc said that too my mother in law is pushing rice formula when she gets older so she doesn't waste her money that I didn't want or asked for I was thinking about asking tomorrow about the baby oatmeal I would feel better with that then rice I feed her mostly breast milk
Some people grow thier own veggies etc and then use canning equipment to can them at home - if done incorrectly it can really dangerous (think coma and possible death or brain damage)
We use solid starts and love it. It’s $99 which can seem a bit pricy, but it’s an amazing resource and meant that we didn’t end up spending money on pre-prepared baby foods!
@@TheDoctorsBjorkman solid starts also has a free food database! You don't have to get the paid version but the paid version can be helpful if you want to track foods that babies have ate!
My paediatrician said that I need to give iron fortified cereal as first meal as baby needs iron. I want to avoid giving food from a box / non natural food as a start. What do u think?
So nervous to start our little 5 month old with solids because he already has his two bottom teeth so giving him “big chunks” as suggested makes me nervous that he can bite pieces out. Have only given him homemade applesauce . Would the same guidelines apply to 6 month old babies who already have teeth ? Thank you !
True! My 4-month old doesn’t have teeth yet but has a really strong gummy bite. It’s hurt my finger before! Lol I’m nervous to give her big chunks she might be able to break apart as well.
Arent they supposed to bite them in order to eat them ? Seriously asking. I've read that the chocking hazzard is greater when spoon feeding since they cannot control it.
Don't think your baby will choke on the little pieces they are able to bite off. My lo has a very strong gum bite, so I gave her raw carrots and apple slices as early as 4 months. Not to eat, but to get that mechanism working. Always closely monitored, of course. She's older now, won't eat baby food, but she can chew and has never choked. Lol
How bout foods like welll cooked beans/lentils? I fed those to my youngest daughter, but she didnt get solids until 10 months and had teeth by then. Graham crackers, cheerios, the puffs and biscuits made for babies by gerber and other baby food companies? Where do those foods lie? In the first foods, or more advanced eaters or the foods best avoided? They were recommended when my older girls were babies but allot of recommendations have changed since then (14 years ago).
I would avoid all processed foods for babies. I confidently gave my children meat. It’s especially good for developing their jaw. (Look into narrow jaws and malnutrition vs wide jaws in tribes and their diets) mushy foods are relatively new to society and explains why more people are developing narrower jaws and more crowded teeth.
What age did you start to your baby? I started 5 month and 5 days, he likes the food but he doesn't know how to chew properly, he push the food outside with the tongue. Today was the forth day. Am I to soon for him? Will he learn how to chew soon? I'm a little worried
Hiii Please let me know what should I avoid to my 10 months old daughter She is having allergic bronchitis What type of milk should I give to her?? Besides breastfeeding.
Hello Doctors! Really amazing the way you explain. My baby is 12 months old now and I’ve just started the BLW method. Shall I have to start with the finger foods that are suggested in this video? Please guide how can I make him eat on his own. I really need help and guidance. I’m so stressed and depressed as he is not eating anything and if eats with a lotta effors
What about cooked canned items? Such as black beans or any type of beans that were in a can but cooked on the stove then mashed. Does that pose a risk for botulism?
Very informative. Thank you. Are store bought frozen veggies okay to give to a baby once mashed or blended? Is 7 months okay to start a baby with solids or is it too late?

A lifevac travel and home kit is the first gift I asked for when I found out I was pregnant. ❤

That’s good as long as he is being breastfed.A baby can go without solids until he gets his first tooth or wait until he’s 8 months
My baby is 8.Curious question-how is he taking solids after starting late?
Honestly food the first year is for play
Keep in mind that in the first year the primary source of nutrition is breastmilk/formula. Starting solids during this time is about exploring different flavors and textures, introducing allergenic foods slowly to reduce the risk of allergies, developing chewing skills etc. You can start with one meal a day and gradually 3 times a day.

My son did not like avocado either he gags when trying it, I don’t even force him to eat it . I just keep giving him other veggies to try .
@@lisasisay3641my baby cries when I gave him carrot and zucchini 😢
This is what I used to do with my baby 10 and 7 years ago but with my 6 months old the doctor said to avoid banana and all the sweet potatoes and sugary veggies and fruit and start with meat for protein. Yay or nay?
Thank You My 7month old is about to start finger food eating ... and Can I just take a lil guess- the way you keep gwting tired while speaking, can it be because u are already pregnant ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊If So God Bless You all!
would you recommend all the first foods you are mentioning even when baby has no teeth?
Love your stuff!
Just FYI, I have always been allergic to citrus, even as a baby. All foods are potentially an allergen.
Love your videos! They have been so helpful with our little one. Thank you so much!
Thanks I got to see the video in the right time.
@@TheDoctorsBjorkman Oh, these are great ideas! Thanks so much!
What are preferable spices to use instead of adding salt?
Hello. Can you comment about water intake? Thank you!
My baby is having constipation after starting solid, He is taking avocados, pears, apples, rice cereals and Aptamil formula stage 2.
What are your thoughts on heavy metal exposure? Many pediatricians suggest reducing rice (like in cereal), sweet potatoes and carrots for this reason.
Carrots? Are you sure?
Yep my baby doc said that too my mother in law is pushing rice formula when she gets older so she doesn't waste her money that I didn't want or asked for
I was thinking about asking tomorrow about the baby oatmeal I would feel better with that then rice
I feed her mostly breast milk
Love your videos so much! Question on this one - what do you mean by home canned foods?
Some people grow thier own veggies etc and then use canning equipment to can them at home - if done incorrectly it can really dangerous (think coma and possible death or brain damage)
Can you do a list for babies with FPIES? Thank you 🙏
Which solid food app do you use?
I don’t know that they use but I love solid starts! It shows what age to introduce and how to introduce it
We use solid starts and love it.
I think you meant $9.99 right?
This video should be applied to adults too lowkey
My paediatrician said that I need to give iron fortified cereal as first meal as baby needs iron. I want to avoid giving food from a box / non natural food as a start. What do u think?
Do you guys recommend Ready Set Food allergen introduction pack?
Thank you so much for what you do! My baby is just a few months younger then your precious one… omg I’m following every single video closely.
Doctor from when we start giving non-veg to baby’s ? Like fish or chicken?? My baby is 6 month
What was the app that you mentioned?
What about their iron stores? Should fortified oat cereal be included?
I would avoid all processed foods for babies. I confidently gave my children meat. It’s especially good for developing their jaw. (Look into narrow jaws and malnutrition vs wide jaws in tribes and their diets) mushy foods are relatively new to society and explains why more people are developing narrower jaws and more crowded teeth.
What age did you start to your baby? I started 5 month and 5 days, he likes the food but he doesn't know how to chew properly, he push the food outside with the tongue. Today was the forth day. Am I to soon for him? Will he learn how to chew soon? I'm a little worried
Why not raw apple? And blueberries ? I usually mash/blend it in oatmeal
This is the first place I hear we should serve big pieces or stripes of foods to babies under 12 months! Who do we give the mushy baby food to then?!
For 5-6 months would it be better to make purée instead of cutting the food up,easier to digest?
Hiii
Please let me know what should I avoid to my 10 months old daughter
She is having allergic bronchitis
What type of milk should I give to her??
Definitely not too late
Too late? Do they miss their window to start eating real food 😆 better late than never
Would you guys recommend offering a dairy free yogurt if baby is on soy formula?
My husband is a mildly allergic to banana and avocado. Is it still safe to start our daughter on banana and avocado or should we wait?
