I made this mistake as well. I used garden soil for potted pepper plants. I added perlite thinking that would make it less dense and provide airation to let the roots breath. Once i transplanted my pepper plant in less than an hour all the leafs were droopy meaning the plant was suffocating. I ended up mixing the garden soil with some potting mix that I had made up primarily of peat moss. I mixed in the peat moss and made the soil become less compact and more loose. I transplanted that same pepper plant in the new soil mixture and it works. The plant revived and has new growth.
Partly correct. I found an excellent topsoil and added perlite and a tiny bit of peat and my pants did better than ever. Garden soil is primarily peat and forest products, potting soil is too.
Shiznit. All i have is potting soil and just spent a ton on outdoor flowers. Dont want to go back and spend more. Glad i found this video though. Thanks❤
The best thing you can do is home compost! Keeps biodegradable scraps out of landfill (where they would decompose anaerobically and produce methane), makes your trash less heavy/gross, and produces lots of lovely FREE compost for your garden. Bagged compost like this uses lots of fuel to ship it around and lots of plastic to bag it up. Home compost is a win win win for the environment and your wallet. As well as vegetable peelings and law clippings, you can also compost tissue, used paper towels, and even pizza boxes or other greasy paper. The paper and card actually helps balance the heap. Good luck with composting, everyone!
@@marykay8587 Make a wooden frame and start pilling any garden waste (lawn clippings) and kitchen scraps (not meat, just vegetable peelings) in there. Add cardboard to help balance it if it looks too wet. And then leave it for a year and the worms will do the work!
Made that mistake too buddy and always have to let people know the same thing if I see them trying to buy garden soil for potted plants, no one seems to read the label and question it
You are only partially correct. You can use garden soil in a pot. Just make sure you use two part of dirt to one part of garden soil. You save a lot of money by doing simple mixing.
Sure, you can mix it with some perlite & peat moss. Peat moss is very cheap for the amount that you get, and it will help stretch the garden soil. The job of both is to make the soil more fluffy and to help with drainage. I did this with most of my vegetables earlier this year, and they did just fine. When I had them potted in pure garden soil, it was way too dense and wet, so the roots couldn't get ample oxygen. Hope that helps!
The other issue is that compared to compost it's much lower in nutrients, so you will find that you have to apply a liquid feed earlier than you would if it was a compost mix.
Idk how I got here, but this is incredibly helpful thank you

I'm going to give that a try as I made the same error. Thank you.
No I believe the plant was just in shock
Thank you! I want to start growing my
Own veggies!
Thank you. Makes so much sense. I have watched so many videos trying to understand the difference

I remember back in elementary we just mixed dirt with the garden soil and are plants grew in cups

Thank you! Was shopping as we speak for my first giant plant and I was just eyeing the garden mix! Good looking out!

It would likley still work that direction
This wassss super helpful!!
Thanks for differentiating them
Oops!! 🤣🤣 thank you for explaining!
A perfect example of some of the things in life that you had no idea you needed to know. 🤷
Wow very good soil
If you accidentally buy the garden soil, just add/mix sand to it for drainage. 2 parts garden soil and 1 part sand.
flower beds outside, my native dirts tan sand( NW louisiana)
tan clay and red clay.
only about 4 inches of top layer brown
Thanks for that information
I did the same thing last week.... Then I saw this lol
I have the MG garden soil and made the mistake of using it in pots 😬 def going to use it outdoors mixed with dirt, but my pots are in shamblesn😂
thanks! wondered that myself recently, and if it was just a marketing gimmick.
Pretty much what it says on the tin!
Wooooo!! Thank youuuuuuuu🎉🎉

Thanks for the info
Any tips for a beginner who would like to start composting TIA
how does one compost? I would gladly do this. I just don't know how to go about doing it. I got a new house with a really big garden

Vermiculite is helping both lighten up.
Do it come with sticks that you use to barbecue with

Dirt as in?. Peat moss or compost
.
thank you!
Thank you!!!!!!
You can put potting mix on your soil. But you can't put garden soil in pots.
My potatoes did just fine using it in a container barely any perlite
How much simpler can the label be? It says what it is for right on the front of the bag.
Lol made that mistake also. Didn't realize it until my plants died. Haha
That's why it has a title gloves or for hands socks or for feet lmao 😂😂😂
I thought everyone knew this already
So is potting soil used for planting seeds?? I’m thinking to start planting some simple veggies but I don’t know anything about soils.
did you ever got an answer to this question btw? im in the same position here..i know nothing about soil either
Can you mix them both together?
This. 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🙏🏾🙏🏾💜💜
What if I grow it in the pot with potting mix and transplant in the ground, can that be done?
Not me discovering this lesson the hard way :(
Yep
If I bought garden soil for container planting is there anything I can do to help it drain better? Is drainage the only issue?

Just made that mistake. Thanks 😂
Oh my lad no wonder all my produce is dying all of a sudden :(
Where can I get the garden soil from?
What can I add to the garden soil? I purchased garden soil instead of mix. How do I lighten it up? Coir?
Buy potting mix or top soil and mix it together.
use peat moss and perlite along with the garden mix
Bro. Garden. Pot. Deductive logic.
Garden soil बनाने कैसे
It tells you in the bag what it’s for. Garden soil 😅Potting soil
Science
Fox farms soil - happy frog. Doooo it ❤💚❤️💚💚
Common sense
You won't have problems with drainage if you drill holes in the bottom of your containers
These had a lot of bugs in them and gross
No no no! No dang MG it is crap!
Brand is absolutely shit! Don’t waste ur money on that.
It’s all bad
Thank you
