A lot of art like this is down to observation, and learning what you are looking at, so it's easier to just do. I personally use photos for reference, and other artists work just for inspiration. If you do use other artists work, make sure you aren't copying it. Use it to get the feel for what you are trying to achieve, pictures of spooky forests or whatever, but then use it to learn, and to inspire your imagination, don't use it directly :)
Very nice piece, you have some great works under your belt. I've been a pencil artist for a long time and just finally got a drawing tablet. Hopefully I'll be putting out some work of this caliber soon. Keep up the great work.
10 sounds about right. I can't recall at the moment. I usually have a base canvas layer, two layers for sketch/refined sketch, the background is one, sometimes two layers, an underpainting for her hair and skin tones, and a few layers on top of the sketch layers for the majority of the painting. Her face markings are on their own layer, probably the collar, too.
@ehlin88 It's called being polite, love. It's not sugar-coating. When you critic someone, you're supposed to be nice about it because you can offend the artist, who most likely put a lot of work into the piece. Yes, the proportions are off, but that doesn't mean you can be a prick about it.
Amazing work, I love this video and I often turn to it for inspiration when I'm finding myself frustrated. You make it look so easy. Could you possibly take us through the types of brushes you use, namely for hair and skin?
Thankyou. And do you ever find you're stuck for inspiration as to what the final piece should look like after you've already begun.. as in.. when to stop, and what to do if it starts going somewhere you didn't anticipate?
Just because you've not seen them before doesn't mean that Photoshop is a better program. I've used both for digital painting, however I definitely think that Painter is a better program for painting than Photoshop. At least with the way that I work.
hmmm...I tend to find each piece is very different. Sometimes I start off with a specific image in mind, and that's what I end up with when done. More often, however, I find paintings tend to take on a life of their own--and I tend to change my mind A LOT, experimenting with different looks, styles, colors, shapes. I also tend to stop too soon... there's always something that I wish, later, I'd gone back and done. But I usually also know when enough is enough.
Practice. I've been painting faces for a long time, now, and while I still can't get perfectly realistic results without referring to a photo, I can get close enough. This one is done without any reference, and I think it shows. Her nose is a bit too flat, her cheekbones not dimensional enough. The angle of the face is a little distorted. But if you practice, study from life, and you know how to build facial structures, eventually it becomes second hand.
Nice work! I also started experimenting with corel painter. I just have a quick question about printing resolution. What resolution works fine to print out your work on a 8 x 11 inch photo paper?
Damn. I forgot paintings can only have one light source. I'm so dumb sometimes--I gave her two to heighten the emphasis on her face. Which, yeah, is somewhat skewed, but hey, one artist to another, what do you do when you don't really notice that till the video is done?
@DeltanBubbles The reason why I haven't got any videos is because I'm too lazy. And I have a deaviantartaccount and my own webgallery. Just because I don't upload awesome videos of my art does it mean I don't know shit? Fuck that. I have this account mainly for finding music and gurus. I'm honest and I will tell someone if they suck at what they are doing.
@DeltanBubbles I'm not saying this sucks.. I'm saying it's not as wonderful as everyone thinks. Not everyone can learn how to draw. Not everyone can see the flaws. Not everyone can understand it. And, wtf does it matter if no one knows who I am? Am I not allowed to say what I think if I don't have similar videos to show? I don't get it.. I don't get why everyone sugarcoats everything.
ooooo niceee, but why not photoshop? its way better for this sorta stuff i think.. havnt seen hany corel paintings on youtube, but still, goood job man :P 5/5
mm, very pretty :p I dunno if you noticed because my friend isn't really a youtuber and she's kind of shy about making new contacts, but your videos inspired her to do a similar one, I think. Her username is onnachance, you might check her out sometime if you like. Okay, gonna watch the rest of your videos now!
@ehlin88 It saddens me that you are judging another persons creativity. People that are born with the talent should be able to express themselves freely without judgement. Every individual is allowed to have their view on the painting but for you to put down an artist because of your disagreements is incomprehensible. Please, before you stab any other artists in their hearts, develop a sense of understandability and realize the perspective the artist may be trying to portray.
@ehlin88 If you wish to critique someone, honor them with the ability to type in an acceptable manner at least. After you have accomplished that much, why not help them rather than insult them. It makes me sad that there are people like you in the world who cannot admit that someone did a good job, even though there were a few mistakes. Did you notice Mercuralis' use of atmospheric perspective, or how the slight distortion of proportions makes the character seem more alien? I did.
@ehlin88 First: this is an old, flawed painting. It remains here because people liked it. Second: What money? I'm a self taught, piss-poor artist who learned in her spare time. I don't make money off these vids, and I don't make much off my art. Third: There's talent and there is skill. Talent is something you're born with, but without training... it's worthless. Skill is what you get by learning. Every piece I do: I learn. I'd rather try & make mistakes than be a bitter, armchair critic.
this is really interesting to watch. i love seeing the way other artists work! thanks for sharing.
I love her hair and the butterfly tattoo on her face! awesome work

Il software è Corel Painter IX. Il formato della pittura è 2400x3600 pixels e 300 dpi. Grazie.

Photoshop doesn't simulate brush strokes, therefore i say it is the better digital "painting" program. I like both equally though.
Great Painting
@celestialsunberry you can see they are useing around 7 layers on the bottom right there

Amazing!
What u think is better?
corel painter IX
or corel paint X?

Very cool.
wow! u're great! it seems harder than draw it in paper

@Mercuralis
Plus, it's not human.
good work mate, wish i had painting skillz/talent.
im only awesome in the web design area..

@celestialsunberry it is beautiful just experiment with different brushes~
Wow.
Yes. I use a Wacom Intuos pen tablet.
Or maybe the landscape behind her is higher than the ground she's standing on? A hill or a rise? Or perhaps she's kneeling.
It's beautiful, but she uses a 'tablet' instrument to draw?
How many layers were you working with please? I counted 10 on screen at once, but it seemed like there were others.

While program is used for these painting videos and while resolution has his canvas? please reply me

I don't get it.. I don't get why everyone sugarcoats everything.
what program do you use to capture the process?
ooooo niceee, but why not photoshop? its way better for this sorta stuff i think.. havnt seen hany corel paintings on youtube, but still, goood job man :P 5/5

@ehlin88 In soviet russia, everyone thinks they're a critic.
