Creality CR-Scan Lizard: An easy-to-use 3D scanner for 3D printer owners?

- Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Today, I will review the Creality CR-Scan Lizard. If you’ve been following my channel for a while, you may see that I’ve reviewed quite a lot of 3D printers, some laser engravers, and CNC machines, but I don’t have any experience with 3D scanners. So, like most people who are deciding on buying their first 3D scanner, I have no idea what this thing is capable of. I will just use it right out of the box and see how easy or complicated it is to make this 3d scanner works. I would like to thank Creality for sending me this scanner to review, and with that, let’s get started.

I kick-started this. Had one for quite a while. You need to turn the detail up. The slide with the number 400000 is the number of triangles. Jack that way up and you'll have more details. Your processing time will go through the roof though. I have a 5600x with 32gig of ram and have had the processing take a half hour. The size of the scans will also get huge. I had 9 scans of a Xbox controller shell and it was over 20gig.
I would have thought the instructions should have outlined the adjustment of the scan resoloution, also I have noticed some other scanners come with a model to assist with scanning tutorials, Creality being fully aware that the unit would be purchased by quite a lot of novices should also have included a scanning model and some tutorials, It seems they have fallen back on their old trick of relying on the community to educate the user on the use of their product.
I kick started it as well and I’ve had nothing but trouble with it. It’s been sitting in a box for the past 6 months unused.
@@sq3rjick Ebay it to sell it? I'm sure someone would like a reduced and used scanner to play with. Good luck.
Got this as a Christmas present. You're amazing! Been trying to figure out how to amp up details.
I appreciate the “out of the box review “ and your methodology of comparing results. Very organized and detailed review with thoughtful recommendations to the manufacturer.
i kick started this scanner, but they never shipped it and eventually gave the option to refund, i am glad to see someone has one and is happy with it.
I thought using a Creality 3D scanner to scan a 3D printed object to then 3D print it on a Creality 3D printer is a sure way to open up a wormhole.
But great video. I think the results will get better as you learn more about how to use it.
Thank You very much. I wanted to buy this but my wife suggested i wait. I already bought a scanner that was pretty poor 3 years ago for $700. You show how the average person might approach the scanner but i do think there are numerous optimizing actions that can be taken to help. I wanted to scan Model Trains and migrate the images from HO and O scale into S gauge. It seems we are a little ways off yet. Good review, you and your team do a great job in the videos. Thank You, Dennis

Small details, you need to scan out more then one direction, like scan on top, 22 degrees, 45 degrees. The scanner works just like our eyes work, if you scan from top it does not see the high or low points(depth), if you look 45 degrees on small things it is possible you see more high or low points. Scan out more then one angle on the objects.
Yes scanning will take longer. Also check for to high of light, from scanner or the room where you are scanning, just the lights of your room could be bad for scanning.
Hi Aurora, great video but prices will have to drop considerably before I consider buying one😃👍Happy New Year to you and your family.
Adding a spray powder to Spiderman would probably help with getting better detail. It makes a huge difference on my Einscan SE.
Why not just use tempura paint? It's easy to clean off hard surfaces. Wood can just be left our side in the sun and it will easily come off with a soft brush.
For the price, it's not bad. I used to use a Faro scanning arm at work. It cost tens of thousands of dollars, and the results were not that much better. The advantage to it was that it handled much larger scanning jobs.
I love new tech like this, its like magic. Thanks for another solid review!
It's not new. They 3D scanned Andy Serkis' face back in 1997 for the Lord of the rings movie that came out in 2001.
It's amazing that tech that was once only available to professional production companies is not accessible to a hobbyist. Like early computers, expect the price-point has also dropped as ease of use has improved.
This was a very comprehensive overview of the Creality scanner. I think if this scanner works as well as you have shown it to perform it should be Ok. " 12:05 I am soled.". I think the idea is clear when you look at something from the prospective of the Chinese. "It is better if you can achieve something good, even if it is not great, rather than nothing at all." The point is; "if I can get the scanner to produce the quality you got of the Banchy I can clean the model up manually in Blender or trac the scanned model in Animation Master, or Design Spark Mechanical. Any good 3D CAD software should inable you to clean up your model. So, this scanner looks like it can prove to be very useful. When you louse a file of a model and have to recreate it from scratch this scanner can save you a major headache and time on recreating a CAD file from an existing model. 👍
Thanks for an honest review. So happy i backed out of the kickstarter
Happy new year 2023 Aurora, and thank you for all your videos.
Very informative video, thanks for your great reviews!
A very informative overview. Is great to see 3d scanners being added to the Aurora Tech knowledge base.
Would be useful if there was a way to suggest areas of a model scan where greater level of detail was desired. Perhaps even scanning at different speed, or resolution.
Just thinking/typing out loud, as have not experience with scanners, but would think to be useful feature.
Hope Aurora Tech enjoys experimenting and learning more from the capability of this 3d scanner. Seems scanning and then editing in 3d cad tool would offer some balance of getting detail desired while saving time on designing a 3d object from scratch.
Great reviewer, and I appreciated your your honesty opinion 👍
I dint know you had to move the saved items. But it works great.
Happy New Year @Aurora!!!
🖒👍🖒
(Looking forward to see more videos)
Thanks Aurora. I have one of these I paid for, it's garbage, but I'm curious to see how it works for you
got mine from the kickstarter (Backer #1) and it was pretty rough to use at first so it’s been in a cupboard. maybe it’s worth digging it out and giving it another try
Very interesting product and great review.. It'd be interesting to see how this compares with some of the cellphone-based photogrammetry solutions out there. The results are definitely decent, especially on simple geometry, it has a lot of potential. I think it's way, way over priced though.
What cell phone photogrammetry are you speaking of actually? I'm really looking for an app that actually works
@@davidgesell I've heard good things about Polycam but most of the better ones use the iPhone's lidar sensor which I'm not able to test.
@@circleofowls Cool thanks I'll check it out
The performance at the price point is really good, but I believe Creality screwed over some patents to get it in production, so not sure I would buy or promote this before the matter is settled.
Congratulations 🎉👌🏻💯
Great review informative and straight out of the box just like some one else would handle the experience. The price is a Hmmm for me. I was waiting for the bloopers but I think this was an earlier production clip. : (
I've watched a couple of your videos and I am impressed. Now my question: Do you really need the turn table if you are primarily needing to scan small (under 8x8x9") objects in geometry mode?
Also, I noticed you used the CR-5 s1, but it's not in your list of best printers. I almost purchased this yesterday but didn't' because this. Seems creality has very good deal on sale for full bundle. Eeek! which to choose? If I could I'd get both the Cr 5 S1 printer and this scanner... but thinking about it, maybe it makes more sense to master scan and cad software before going to the print stage.
Great job as always! Thank you.
Great overview, thanks.
Would be nice to see how it scans miniature figurines from D&D or warhammer…
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful
the way shes says one when she starts the list count, makes me imagine the creality engineer's heart skipping a beat! 😂
I would imagine that if you had used the scanner in handheld mode that you might be able to get more of the details inside of the benchy. I have used an older NextEngine Scanner which will automatically pivot on different axis points, but still has issues with areas that the laser beams can't reach. That is why I wondered if "moving in" would get that detail.
Very nice 👍
Nice review, thanks! I'm learning my scanner from your video. But there is a question: in what mode do the LEDs around the scanner camera begin to work?
You can use a solution of alcohol and baking soda or foot powder, spray it on as a temporary coating on shiny objects.
Great video!
I have some experience with scanning with Hexagons scanner with it you would be able to get an accuracy about 0.1mm. So your results are not that bad. You might be able to improve your model with some frosted spray and scan the spiderman statue longer.
Hi there, great videos! Have you reviewed the snap maker 2? I only trust you and your brother. Thanks!!
712 dollars is just a few hundred dollars? Is there a discount somewhere that I'm missing or is the link wrong?
when i got it on Kickstarter it was closer to 400..Theres a whole history with this thing..
Can review creality scan ferret pro
The spiderman figurine seems to be very shiny I wonder what the Result would have been if you had some of that 3-D spray or had you painted it Matt Finish. Before doing the scan. Can you tell me what the resolution is of the 3-D scanner's camera's?
Can you compare ender 3 s1 pro and BIQU hurakan 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can I ask a question? Can this scanner scan a baby head well? Thank you
How does this compare to Agisoft's Metashape? (which handles drone imagery and can do georeferenced photogrammetry)
The most shocking part about this video is that high power PC being "Outdated"
*Cries in i7-6700K-GTX1070 *
My I9-1200k with RTX 3080 should be able to handle it.
OMG, 64GB of RAM memory WOW , and I Happy with my 12 haha
I want one
If you have iphone with lidar camera it's the same
if the price for the scanner would be 100 $ the quality would be acceptable. but for that price the outcome is just a joke. it will take several more years for this kind of technology to be on paar with 3d printers and mass market.
.001 scan resolution but i misses 1/2 the texture lines? Looks like crap to me!
Did they settle their legal troubles? I thought they got in trouble…
Requesting vids on using AI to generate 3d printable models
👍
I am a little disappointed with the quality of the scans. Even the texture mode version lost much of the detail.
👍🏻👍🏻
715 Dollr for this thing?! Never ever, even 150 Dolrs would be too much.
What is the chemical used to make the mould?
I am sorry, I have been watching few videos, but the voice just doesn't fit the face. What is wrong with me? Is there any post-processing done? I am going mad!
Pretty fast? Your Old computer is blazing fast, probably 95 percentile on Steam aggregate stats. Mine is still from Windows 7 Era, 10 years old.
Hi guys what are your thoughts on this the All-metal Extruder Upgrade Ender 3 v2 FLSUN Heat Treated Metal Gear HRC60 OMGV2S F1 Set 3D Printer Part OMG V2s
found on Aliexpress
It would be interesting to scan the print of the scan, print it, and keep repeating that 10 times to see how it degrades into nothing, like a sort of Chinese whispers.
$700?????
Plot twist: she’s 28 years old. :)
You said it in the very beginning that the instructions tell you that you can't scan shiny objects and then you go ahead and start scanning shiny objects.
My go-no-go test for whether I'd buy one is can I can get reasonable results when scanning a real non-bald human head (while it's still on their shoulders of course).
"What is this part supposed to be useful for? Who in the world likes poor copies of things? The details are so poorly captured that I strongly doubt the accuracy of this product."
conclusion: this 3d scanner works. HaHa!
Great video. Saved me from buying this turd.
Hi Fakumadda, you're also suggested to check the following review video: ruclips.net/video/Jy0k99DSLxk/видео.html, this reviewer scanned a lot of different items and give some scanning skill suggestion, hope it could be helpful for you!
@CrealityEcosystem ...thanks. I'll take a look.
Just got the Einstar for car panel molds, Beats this is every way.
@3dkiwi920 ....to be fair, it's also almost double the price. I wonder how good an Xbox Kinect v1 and computer would compare with the lizard, though..
@@fakumadda1632 It accuracy over large parts is worth the price for me at least. The software is the best of any as is based on the software used for Shining 3D's $10-$20k scanners. Kinect is not worth the hassle, you'd be better off with SFM photogrammetry if you haven't tried that yet.
Keep your money, this scanner and software is not friendly user
I am so surprised that you would have anything to do this this company. After seeing your review I ordered from their store with an estimated delivery of a few days. A week later and still no tracking and not shipped, emailed, no response, now 2 weeks later still no response and I have had to register a complaint with the CC company. DONT BUY!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
More enthusiasm would do this channel a great amount of viewership.
Chapters would be helpful.
I don't see the point of turntable scanners any more. You can do that with free software and a phone. Too little too late. Creality underwhelming yet again.
Stop reading off of a script and just wing it. It would come out as more genuine. . .
yay! first
Does it scan texture too?
"IT is a bit out dated" 👀 bruh.
