    Thank you, Triton ... I approached this method is severe panic and trepidation. Frankly, I always avoided Memtest for fear of the 'drama' it requires of me. Thank you for removing the mystery behind it all. The odd thing is that my Memtest came with the image file, which I had to remove and copy to another drive location before I started the imaging process otherwise it would not start. That's the part you missed on your otherwise excellent video. Thanks again!

      Hey thanks. Your system should run at the settings you have it set to. So if you have xmp enabled it should run at full clock speed. It shows you in the software what things are set to so it would be obvious if it wasnt normal. Its a very safe software as the creators are geniuses when it comes to memory manipulation. So my guess is that you need to up the voltage if it was seated properly but.. if you aren't familiar with overclocking you might just leave it alone. Try to find a forum post on your cpu/ram and see if they have suggestions for ram. It might only need another 0.05V to be stable at overclock.

      I would just buy two new sticks. Different batches are binned differently. They match pairs that perform the same and they clock them the same. There is a whole process they use. Its the best way to ensure long term stability.

    If anyone has downloaded a Linux MX or arch and burned it on a CD or DVD, you can boot from your CD and use Memtest from the CD- you dont have to make any changing in BIOS- only Boot from CD is necessary.

    Aren't you supposed to select one of your RAM sticks by clicking in that list so you know if there's errors, which stick has the errors? Then how do you know WHICH stick in your actual PC case is the stick you are testing? I'm going to try this because after installing 64GB (4 sticks) and a 4070 TI graphics card, I'm not getting random BSOD events. Thanks for this vid. Nice to see the steps.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Год назад

      Hello thanks for watching. Bsod are so random sometimes. It could be an overclock. Could be the power supply. Could be a faulty gpu driver. Testing ram is a great idea. Do you have xmp (if intel cpu) enabled for the ram (or the amd equivalent)? My understanding is the memory address would tell you which stick it is. You can always boot with 2 sticks then test twice to get all. Then do one at a time to narrow it down for sure. Their website (in description) has more info on different scenarios. Hope this helps. I was able to RMA a stick that i didn't get around to using for almost a year and get a replacement set. I would also do all updates on hardware and commonly used software. So gpu drivers and windows updates to start. Some newer samsung ssd's have bad firmware from the factory too!

      @@TritonTv69420 I have ASUS Prime X299 Deluxe II motherboard and I7 or I9 Intel CPU (I forget...) and I just wanted to upgrade the graphics card from the 1800s to something modern so I got one that is pretty new but not the $1600 one. Bout half of that and I had to carve out a spot in the case for it to fit across. So, I decided why not up the RAM too. That motherboard can do up to 128 Gig of RAM so I have 64 G. I took that thing apart SOOOO many times trying to get the memory INSTALLED in the right slots. You have to put them into the right config based on how many sticks you have. So.... breaking that PC down and doing 4 mem tests... man, that would be a royal pain to unplug all the cords and haul it to the bedroom, remove 3 sticks, reassemble, run memtest... film the result page with camera each time. But that would definitely eliminate any change of not knowing which stick is bad if errors show. But this whole dual-stick may be in error but single may not.... that's beyond my ability to understand. If there is a bad circuit in a RAM stick (even one of the bits), wouldn't an error display in memtest? oh well... it's a bit beyond my knowledge but if memtest gives ALL errors such that it lists some memory range they are in, then maybe you can calculate which stick but then that's too much for my brain. I know hexadecimal but still... This RAM is from Kingston so that's a good brand but there is SOMETHING different now. RAM or my graphics card because those are the only things I did different. OH, I DID overclock the BIOS stuff for a while (like a week) but I set it back to normal so I am getting BSOD without overclocking anything and I have XMD set to ON. Thanks for your fast reply!!! My BSOD seems to happen when I'm moving my graphics pen upward at a fast speed toward the X where you close windows. Happened last with FireFox browser open and I was moving upward then POOF.... BSODoom.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Год назад

      Interesting. I would definitely start with testing the sticks. Make sure they are seated all the way and the lock is on (never touch anything inside unless power has been fully off for mins). Update all the other stuff. Check out my video where i overclocked my i7 7700k to 5.0Ghz. It shows some of this stuff and how i documented the changes. That motherboard should be top of the line. I would for sure test in the 4 stick configuration and go from there. You should be able to remove dimm slot 1 and 3 after the 4 stick test and do a 2 stick test (only if errors on 4 stick test), the manual should say the preferred slots for 2 sticks its usually 2 and 4. Also the built in windows calculator has a programmer calculator in it. Should be easy to figure out the ram address of each stick using that. In the menu it shows what addresses are being tested so you can put that into the hex calculator and divide by 4. You can switch between decimal and hex, oct, binary do calculations then switch back. Also you should be able to remove ram sticks without touching anything else. Not sure if you have a glass panel or metal on the cpu side.

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge Год назад

      @@TritonTv69420 Yeah, I was careful not to touch anything nor the pins of the RAM sticks. It was hard getting them seated. I was afraid to push too hard and you have to push very hard so I was careful not to push at any angle and tried to seat them slowly at first and push on the right side and a few times I got the left side seated well but right was not. So.. not sure if that messed anything up but I finally got them all seated properly and my PC says 64GB showing up so... I hoped all was ok but I SHOULD HAVE installed the memory ONLY and see how that went for say a few days but I was eager to get it all in at once and be done since I'd opened the PC so many times before with 32 G ram sticks and found later those won't work so....
      So removing a ram stick I have to unplug everything and take the case somewhere where I can see it and get to it better. hmmmm well, your idea of doing all 4 sticks in one test is one way. Let it run while I sleep tonight, wake up and see if ANY errors report. If so, then that might be the cause of BSOD at least. But does the BIOS settings affect the RAM test? I mean, I've got it set to XMD now so... does memtest BYPASS all that and test ram directly ...??? Should I turn XMD off b4 testing? argggggg. Computers... can't live with them... can't live without them! thx for the feedback and ideas. I wish I knew the best settings for my 4070 TI also. I'm starting to tinker witih Blender so... there's so many settings I think it's a miracle ANYTHING works.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Год назад +1

      Yes if you have xmp enabled it will test the ram at the xmp clock rate. This is good because this is what you want. You want to know if the system is stable at your clock rate. So it will test it at any cpu overclock as well as ram overclock. I would test it at that speed and if it fails try it on default settings. Then you can rule out if it was the clock rate or not. If you narrow down which stick/s it is hopefully they are new enough to RMA and get working sticks. You might be surprised to not have any errors but it's worth checking. My guess is with your cpu and that much ram it will take 4-6 hours to complete 4 full rounds of tests. I feel like sometimes even windows updates end up with memory leaks and weird kernel errors. Had one bsod like 6 months ago and never found out what it was. Could have just been a power spike. It's annoying trying to find out. Also for any type of gpu intensive program like video editing or CAM software or visual effects software you will most likely have better results on the studio edition of the drivers so I would switch to that for sure. Studio drivers run games fine in my experience. O yea it's insane how hard you have to push to get ram in... haha

      Hey! Hope the video at least helps with running memtest. Good luck on the new build. My advice would be run it as is let it do at least 3 passes of all tests. If its not using all ram do a complete power down wait 5 mins and short out the power button (press power with the back shutoff to drain the last bit of electricity) then swap out two sticks (double check they are seated first if you hear it pop test again as is.). I have had bad ram from the store. If the second two sticks work you can rule out the ram as two stick setups. Could be the duel channel part of the motherboard. Always make sure each stick is fully seated to where the locking tab pops. All manufacturers have defect warranties. If its two of your sticks or even one then you can RMA the set and get a new one. Use other ram in the meantime.

      Before I even ran this I reseated the second stick and tried to see what would happen when running a game, but same result, even before it was properly seated it was still being detected.

Boot into bios (usually spam the f2 button sometimes f12 on bootup) then turn on/enable legacy boot. As memtest isn't an OS this setting might not allow it to boot into the software. Hope this helps

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  3 года назад +1

      I'm sure someone smarter than me can write a python script to do this. However... programs like these run in lui of an operating system. You boot in to the program. There is no OS in the way hogging resources. Its just pure hardware and a very small efficient program to run on said hardware. Its really really easy. I have faith in you. Follow steps and feel free to ask questions. Be very careful when entering BIOS to not change settings you do not know about. Booting to a usb is pretty safe. I am not sure if the software will run in windows, mac os, or linux. I am willing to bet there are other things out there. The tests want to use as much as possible of all the rams memory locations. From what I remember my version of windows 10 uses about 4GB of RAM. meaning the test would probably have to shift around windows memory in order to fully test the memory locations. I am pretty sure this is why it boots into the software without an OS. Feel free to ask questions here. I will check this comment for questions on the next few days. I do believe there is a way to save the logs from the memtest86 software. I will double check later this week. Cya around. Thanks for watching.

      Dang that sucks. I would double check ram is seated properly. Turn pc off (full shutdown). Flip power switch off and let it sit for a few mins. Not sure if thos is desktop or laptop?
      Either way make sure ram is seated properly first. If that doesnt help try turning off xmp or expo. If that doesnt help start removing sticks when you test. If you have 4 now test 2, make sure you know which slots you motherboard wants for just 2. If same result try 1 at a time in the right slot.
      Its know that individual sticks can pass on their own but fail when in a group. If you can figure out which stick is causing issues see if you can rma the stick(s). Hope this helps.

I already know all four dimms work, but I need something to test the memory to make sure the timings are correct. Heyy!! Awesome video man but quick and random question for anyone to reply
    Having a buddy with constant blue screens and other things ive through rigorous testing concluded the ssd or hdd isnt a problem
    Having him take a memtest86 through usb he failed with 10k errors both 16 sticks in took roughly 3 hours
    Currently running it again with a single stick
    Here's where im confused
    We just ordered and bought all new parts parts include : new ddr - 3600 ram new b series 690 pro board -a new 12th gen cpu i5 a new gpu amd The only thing not replaced was psu ssd hdd
    Trying a run with only the ssd installed fresh os = blue screen after 15 mins in windows
    Same test with hdd? Blue screen 15 minutes in windows
    Okay...so what are your thoughts? Im now sort of leaning toward ram or memory module though i was thinking psu before seeing the memtest fail
    Running out of ideas any tips or help would be appreciated!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 this problem has persisted for roughly 2 weeks after this poor man spend 1500 cad on his new system 😭

      Sorry to hear. One thing that happened to a friend of mine. I replaced his hdd with an ssd. I dont remember the brand of laptop. To me it looked like the grounding pads where inverse of what they should be to take the shock to the case. I think a lot of laptops are finicky about electrical stuff. You are doing the right thing by checking one ram at a time. If you can it might be worth checking to see if the cpu has properly applied thermal paste. Thermal issues and electrical can be tricky to pin point if they are intermitant. I would check to make sure there are no loose screws, all connections are tight, all ground locations are properly secured. Failing memtest usually means hardware issues. Hope this helps a little. Just hit 1k subs last night! Thanks for watching. Hope you figure it out. Pc stores might let you swap to a random set or ram and run your test in the store...

      Issue is cpu I'd say is ruled out beforehand when the system was working and not blue screening every 15 minutes I had him run some heaven benchmarks for gpu and cinebench r23 for cpu Temps
      All of which were low Temps with decent wattage! 0 issues there!
      I actually walked him through the thermal paste and cpu cooler install on call so I can verify he's got enough for cooling+ hw monitor and cinebench told us 60-64c was roughly his max
      Not sure where else to go having him grab a new ssd+psu since those are the only two other old components not new and replaced
      If that doesn't work I guess we will be grabbing new ram sticks! Rough man! 😭 it's just hard to see his brand new ram coming in broken.

      You can RMA new devices. I think most have a manufacturers warranty of 1 year. I would either go to the retail store he bought it from or go online and initiated the RMA process. I had to do this with some corsair ram straight out of the box. Sometimes new hardware has issues. These companies know this. You should be able to do this for free or just shipping.

Also know which two ram slots are preferred for duel channel setup. Its usually DIMM slot 2 and 4. Check motherboard manual. Then if you do only 1 its usually slot 2 preferred. Ok so looks like two issues. Sorry for delayed response.
      1) if i were you i would shutdown your pc and turn the power supply completely off. Unplug if you want to be extra cautious. Let it sit for 2 mins or longer. Press power button to short out remaining electricity. Then and only when you are sure the entire system has no residual charge, disconnect ram and re seat them one at a time. Make sure you click the latches on BOTH sides of the ram. Do this for all sticks. Consult your motherboard manual to make sure you are in the correct slots for how many sticks you have. Then power back up and double check that you can see all ram. If windows isn't seeing it still i would contact the manufacturer and see if you can RMA.
      2) re watch how the device is formatted. Make sure you follow the instructions. If needbe reformat the device. If i were you i would unplug all other usb storage devices to make it easy to select. When you select which device to boot into make sure you are pressing the right button. My BIOS is enter some others may be a different key.
      Hope this helps. PC troubleshooting is all about going back to square one. Start with connections. Make sure things are where they should be. Then make sure you are selecting things properly. I have read of similar issues and it was not seated properly. Connected just enough for BIOS to see it but not for windows to use it.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  7 месяцев назад

      Hello. I would start with reading the documentation on the benchmark software website. When it says "expected" and "actual value", my understanding is those are the transferred values after each test. So if it is getting a different value it does mean it is failing the test. Wheather that is RAM or cpu or power supply ect, is the hard thing to figure out.
      The tricky thing is it could be so many things. Perhaps the cheapest thing to try is get another set of ram that is the same type (ddr4, ddr3, ddr5). If your system is fairly new, you should contact the RAM manufacturer and see if you can RMA. Its always worth removing both sticks of RAM and double checking all plug-ins. Blow things off with air and make sure everything is seated properly. Make sure BOTH tabs on each side of each RAM stick are seated. This is a common issue.
      Hope this helps. Also try to turn off xmp or the amd equivalent (overclocked ram setting). When testing you want to eliminate variables. So perhaps its not getting enough juice at the higher clock rates. Then you can tweak the voltage and perhaps get it working. Only do that kind of stuff after looking up guides for your motherboard bios though.
      Check out my "how i got my i7-7700k overclocked at 5ghz" video. There is some other info on testing with a different software called prime 95. Links for that stuff in description of that video.

      Hello good questions.
      So some computers use f2 some are f12. Some are delete.... just depends on the manufacturer.
      BIOS is BIOS. Its what your computer loads before the OS.
      When you exit memtest it should take you either back to the startup of your computer. So you can go back to BIOS or just let it boot. The boot priority list will dictate what it is going to do.

    • @615f
      @615f 9 месяцев назад

      Thank you for replying. If you don't mind attempting to answer one last question. Do you think that this test is particularly hard on the CPU? I'm trying to go through a step by step process to sort out which hardware issue I am facing and using the results to give back to my PC manufacturer/parts manufacturer. I have a 13900kf and am concerned the CPU will be very hot for apparently up to 10 hours since I have 32gb of RAM.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  9 месяцев назад

      This tests the ram not the cpu... its very easy for the cpu to run this test. All it is doing is passing info back and forth and other things. Its not really doing cpu calculations. It just does different types of ram info moving. That's my understanding. If i had to guess. Its like 2-5% cpu intensive. Its not a test for the cpu.
      If interested. I have a video on how i overclocked my i7 7700k to 5.0 Ghz. That explains more about what i learned over clocking the cpu. In that case you are testing both the CPU and the ram to the max.
      Memtest is designed to see if your ram retains values for a long period of time. Can pass values from blocks to blocks. As well as inverting and other types of memory manipulation. Read their about page on their website if you really want to know what it is doing. Very smart computer engineers over there. Its amazing its free. Hope this helps.
      My suggestion would be to download cpuid as well as prime 95. Check out my overclocking video in my computers playlist.

      Does the expected match the actual? If will say if the tests pass or not. XMP (intel cpu) or DOCP (amd cpu) can cause issues. Sometimes voltages are too low to keep memory stable. It tests all the ram you have installed on your motherboard. If you get errors see the log file. If you cant determine which stick it is boot 1 at a time. Usually the second slot is the preferred slot if just 1. Then try two at a time. 2nd slot and 4th slot is usually preferred.

    When I select to format, it erases the Memtest from the USB and I have time write it onto it all over again, and then it asks me to format it again.
    What am I doing wrong here?

    • @TritonTv69420

      hmmm. Follow the writing directions carefully. I would keep the imaging program on a different drive. If your usb is drive k lets say, put the imaging file on a different drive. When it images it it does format and rewrite it.
      If it keeps giving you that error at least try to boot into bios and run the test.
      When is it giving you this error? right off the bat when you are still inside the imaging program? Or after when you try to click on the drive? Don't worry about being able to use the drive for anything else other than memtest after you image it. You will reclaim the space by formatting it later on in video. Hope this helps.

    • @TritonTv69420

      I believe so. It could be caused by a bunch of different things. Is your cpu over clocked? Is your ram over clocked? How old is your motherboard? How old is your power supply? Its a good idea to turn everything off unplug and let it sit for at least 90 seconds. Then uninstall and reinstall your ram. If system is over clocked try resetting to default values. Also what test did it fail? It says the hammerhead test (I believe test 13 is the most commonly failed test) Their website has trouble shooting advice. If multiple sticks are installed you might be able to figure out which one has issues.

I remember reading something saying slightly higher voltage on ram can help stabilize it. Sometimes an error can happen when voltages are top low.

      If you can't get it to pass i always suggest buying two or 4 sticks from the same batch. They are "binned" for performance. Most manufacturers have 1 year or longer warrenties. They will RMA the device and issue a replacement. If your sticks are new i would start there.
