As a guy who has been a Ham operator for 5 years now, have to laugh when you talk about how a lot of Ham guys hate those radios. Not all do! Love them or hate them, I believe they are responsible for a lot of the new growth we are seeing in the hobby today. Not everyone wants to spend $200 - $300 on a radio if they aren’t sure yet about getting into the hobby. These cheap radios provide a low cost way for people to listen in and see what the hobby is about. Just my two cents, enjoyed your video!
very true, and yeah technically theyre "illegal" because on HIGH mode you can transmit (power wise) above the legal limit on the gmrs/frs channels 1-14, but honestly the only people that really care are the sticklers who like to complain. Ive never had any problems using these
@@dylanmacias1288 they are illegal because they are not type certified. I love the radios they are a cheap and useful tool when used properly. Unfortunately people are using them inappropriately and causing interference. I experienced this just today as a matter of fact.
@@jrpeasley87 people have abused everything ever made and produced. Licenses don't stop that. However, people that abuse them get bored quickly and move on. Think about it. Kenney, It was good of you to explain how you gained knowledge from this stream to a better understanding of hand-programming the MIGHTY Baofeng. I am a very old Amateur Radio Operator and learned to make my own transmitter at age 16. I went to Navy OCS after college and became a radio and crypto officer on a Command Ship in 1962. Our gracious host on this channel gave one of the most reasoned intros to programming the Chinese ham radio HT's. Very helpful and useful way to get the most from your transceiver. Stay with this technical electronic radio to learn more and gain knowledge. Thanks to our Channel's gracious Host and 73 from John, KH3AE.
First of all, thank you. I’ve been looking into a comms setup for awhile now and it’s completely and honestly just annoying. This is the first video I’ve watched that was clear, concise, and actually gave me an answer. Thank you sir!
I think that's why a LOT of CBers and some Ham operators left transceivers behind when mobile phone became cheap and the call costs plummeted to either 1p or so a minute - or all included. (Virtually) infinite range communications with zero audible interference, dirt cheap handsets and no need to conform to "rules and regs".
1:39 On the contrary, I was actually enticed into Ham radio and passing the exam BECAUSE of these cheap Baofeng radios. I think they are the best thing to happen to Ham radio. They may not be as fancy as other more expensive units but you can't beat the value. No hate here. They are REALLY good radios for the money. I would recommend them to anyone. Maybe they will entice you to take the exam and get more into the hobby like me.
Yup, same here. I have been taking the prep test over and over on the android app, and now I have passed it once. Since already know basic circuitry stuff it provided me a way to look up all those acronyms for radio specific stuff.
I have a very expensive ICOM and a cheap Baofeng. I use the cheap Baofeng more often because if I drop it, lose it or whatever I'm not out that much. It is barely compliant with FCC regulations as to spurious emissions and things like that; not good, but adequate!
Exactly. I don’t know what he was getting on about in this video. The hams on the internet may hate them, but everyone I’ve ever met in real Life has a baofeng. Usually used in field situations.
The FCC however has deemed it illegal for ALL these uses. FRS , GMRS, & Amateur Radio. All for different reasons. FRS - illegal because it doesn't for guidelines. I’m very new to HAM and I’m trying to learn. Seems like there is a lot of people that are not very nice in comments and FB groups. Thank you for being very patient and polite.
These radios also receive the NOAA weather stations. I highly recommend you program those frequencies in your radios, especially if you spend a lot of time without reliable cell coverage. Just don’t transmit on them.
I ordered one of these exactly for the reason you describe regarding communication on off-road trails, BUT because it has the VHF band, I can also use it to call my boat. Thanks again for a great review!
This has been very helpful. I was overwhelmed until I found your channel. You definitely made it easy figuring these out. Thanks so much brother. Very informative.
For my purposes this is without a doubt the most informative video I have found! Thank you for posting and sharing your awsome simplistic instructions for us radio dummies! Hopefully I won’t always be that way but your video gets me started and encourages me to learn more. Again thank you so much!
I checked this out too. They keep saying they're switching it to $35... "someday... maybe..." Even at $7 a year it's not bad. I do find it funny how some people lose their minds over the Baofeng radios, and this guy's videos are great to counter that.
Wow dude! Classic mode! I’ve watched all of your recent GMRS videos. My daughter just bought a jeep…. And we are doing a rebuild as she works toward her license so suddenly all of the keep videos are relevant too. I went crazy on GMRS radios and now you are going to cost me some serious money! Great vids and cool to see the evolution
Thanks so much for making this video. Just got into offroading and was looking for a set of decent radios to pick up. Had no idea how to use them until I found this video.
Great video. You inspired me to get a couple UV-5Rs with extended batteries and Diamond antennas as well as GMRS licenses for me and my girlfriend for our SHTF items. Thanks for everything Randy.
Its pretty easy to program these with the CHIRP program. I just googled frs/gmrs frequency list and downloaded my first radio onto chirp. Then added the frequencies to the channel list in chirp, using 1-22 so it matches the bubble wrap channels, then uploaded (cloned) both my radios from the list.
Thanks a ton Notarubicon....... Though I generally don't comment, would love to thank you for your humorous way making us better at what we need to know when working with these radios.... Keep it up you humorous gargantuan Continue telling us and teaching us more

Correct. We only use it as a walkie-talkie, while in the mountains, where CB frequencies are only in the range of up to 2 miles. These radios are loud and crisp, without all the noise, we have to listen to, plus the fact, that others are on it, interfering, with you and the people you wanna talk to. I love it. @@Loco_Lui While it's true that this is all technically illegal, I would challenge you to provide even one instance of someone being fined or going to jail for using a Baofeng. There was that guy in NY/NJ that was messing with NYPD a few years ago.. He got a huge fine and jail time but he was messing with law enforcement. AND, if you look to 11 meters.. 4 watts is 4 watts. 20 seconds of listening to any CB channel will tell you that no one you hear is running only 4 watts. How many of these folks are the FCC bringing down on an annual basis..? Yep.. none. So, yes.. it's illegal to use a Baofeng on GMRS.. but 5 watts (or less) is not disrupting our ham bands to any appreciable level and no one is going to jail over it. If they actually gave a crap, you'd think they would take care of that mess on 40 meters (7200). They're way too involved in selling off more and more of our bandwidth to bother with 2m/70cm issues.
Please do not post comments with your unsolicited legal advice. For information on the legalities using of the UV-5R see this video: ruclips.net/video/VqdgFepzZ_c/видео.html
Thanks for posting this informative video! I have been a HAM operator since 1996 and I have been battling the "HAM NAZIS" since I first discovered them, or more accurately, they discovered me. These people are literal control freaks. They are the progenitor of all things "Karen". I control a GMRS repeater in central Texas, Experiment with homemade HF, UHF, and VHF antennas. And own over 10 Baofeng HT's(For friends/family events). I also own three 6x6's, and three diesel 4x4's and a Kawasaki KLR-650. And now I am a subscriber to your channel. Again, thanks! This video WAS very much needed. 👍
Exactly said as above... I use my Baofengs all the time on GMRS/FRS. I can almost bet 99.9% no one is going to bother you. Im in a dense location and there is almost NEVER any traffic on the radio. Plus the RANGE here is less than 1 mile... all HILLS etc... so Since there is NO TRAFFIC on the radio and the HILLS... Ill guarantee im not bothering ANYONE... And if your not bothering anyone, no one is gunna SNITCH on you claiming your using to much power etc... Plus no one can SEE my radio that it has a removeable antenna etc...
Why can’t I get my UV-5R to transmit to regular walkie talkies? I took a walkie-talkie and hot mike’d it and then would have my Baofeng scan until it locked onto the frequency of the bubble wrap radio. I can speak to the baofeng but the baofeng will not transmit to the walkie talkie. I have checked the settings and even used to chirp to see if my transmit was disabled and it’s not. What am I doing wrong?
@@caseycroucher9191 either the walkitalki is on a frequency that the Baofeng cant transmit on, or you have a privacy code on the walkitalki preventing it from hearing you.
I've read that because the radio has the capability of transmitting on other frequencies u still need a ham license to transmit outside of an emergency situation but u can listen by all means
Yes that is correct and that's why this radios aren't everyone's bad list because it can be used on a circle freight types of frequencies even emergency from what I hear
You can always listen - no restrictions. When you transmit, you have to have the right license for the frequency you are on (Amateur, GMRS) or FRS (no license). FCC enforcement has been pretty lax, but if you interfere with an ongoing operation, you might be subjected to fines (upwards of $10K).
Looking back at these earlier videos you were less jaded by the hammie trolls. Thanks for the quick tutorial on this we’ll come in handy for off-roading and airsoft with my son
Ham radio operators stop many people from being ham operators. By restricting the working man from getting into ham radio. We can’t afford those outrageous priced radios
UV82 is better than the UV5R, imo. The BTECH models improve upon the quality of transmission over the Baofeng radios also, but they're more expensive (and worth it)
You can save yourself and your friends a lot of time and frustration. Get one person in your group to buy a Baofeng programming cable. In combination with a free program called CHIRP, you can easily pre-program all off the GMRS frequencies and weather radio in the software one time and then push it to each radio in about 5-10 seconds. Any time someone gets a new radio or dorks things up, you just connect the radio and push the config again. You can even set custom start up messages and back light colors along with a lot of other customization like turning off the beeps and setting up to use a repeater. And btw the spurious emissions do matter when using these for GMRS just as much as it does us HAM guys. Even if it was a toaster it would still be violating FCC Regulations. (I still own one anyway for a backup)
i love them... i got one when they came out years ago with them and it still works flawless.. also got a newer one because they simply cool devices and the work
1:39 On the contrary, I got my HAM license BECAUSE of these cheap radios. They are great radios and I would recommend them to anyone. I have 4 of them that I loan to my friends and family when we go out on an adventure.
Question, which channels are illegal ? And how do I know which channels have the best reception ? I bought two radios , my wife and I will be using them to stay on contact with each-other on our property , a lot of acres.
Among the tons of videos regarding various radio equipment, this is among the best! Clear, succinct, and verbally clear. Excellent! Please continue to make more informational videos!
Thanks for the tutorial. I just bought 2 for my Autistic son and me. I have been given 2 Motorola gp328 units but honestly too big for him. And i have heard the baofeng uv5r is excellent for the money. If he breaks it, I can order another like you said. Youve been a big help! Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
Do you have a video that explains what each menus item means & does? I have a vague idea from other videos but I feel like nobody else could explain it better.
For offroading, I own both a gmrs and a ham, both are boafeng and both are very inexpensive. I also have a handheld CB. I probably have less than $120 spent for all three together.
I am an avid JeepAholic. My wife and I do a lot of Jeep outings. You never know what communication type you may need. So I still use CB, I have a UV-5R programmed with GMRS, HAM, Race radio, Rugged radio.... Most Jeep outings, I am not talking, just listening to directions. Nice one radio (UV-5R) can do all that, for whatever I encounter.
I wish I had found this video before I spent endless hours trying to figure out a knockoff radio I found on the internet. I think that the guy in this video should work for the company. He could make informational videos for those of us who are not quite so technical savvy.
I personally have these Repeaters as well , the BF-FBHP they're pretty damn good .. 👍... & remember folks , get a Ham radio too, cause when SHTF, actually hits the fan , don't be scared to contact a loved one pushing that button on your Ham Radio, it's not going to kill someone, and the damn FCC will not have the time , to find you just cause you absolutely had to get a hold , of a love one a state over , just saying... Oh, O , probably gave out bad advice , but hypothetically speaking, use it only for emergency reasons.. Just speaking truth , don't kill the messenger.
Nice review. I have a Ham license and purchased one of the Baofeng's as well as a Yaesu handheld. You're video helped me to understand some of the simple operations, yet not always easy to decipher from the manual. I am also an off roader (2016 JKUS) and decided get my ham license and some radios was the way to go to supplement my handheld CB which I still also carry when off roading. Safe travels and God Bless!
I have the BF-F8HP with a respectable 8 watts of transmit power. Great little radios. I’ve upgraded the antennas on all mine, we easily get a couple miles out of them in less than ideal conditions. I may need to look into that extended battery. Haven’t needed it yet but better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Thanks for the good information. I’m pretty new to overlanding . I’m putting together a Jeep/trailer combo. I’m upgrading from a Walmart bubble radio setup. I’ve ordered the BAOFENG UV-5R5 hopefully I can figure it out with the help of your channel
Hi Randy, first let me say you have fun and funny videos. I got my Commertial FCC LICENSE in my 20s and worked in a two way radio shop. Then the price of 5 watt VHF and 4 watt UHF portables were over $1000.00 each made by GE land mobile or Motorola and they struggled to just transmit and receive. The Baofengs of today do it so well and easily for $20 to $30 bucks. So hams hate Baofengs ? Oh hell no quite the opposite i love the 10 that I have they are great little radios !
@@minicowman if you change the ham radio to gmrs you don’t get the satellite feature on the ham frequency’s huh?
The beginning? Well and truly done!
Please do not post comments with your unsolicited legal advice. For information on the legalities using of the UV-5R see this video: ruclips.net/video/VqdgFepzZ_c/видео.html
I LIKE THE VIDEO ON HOW TO USE THE BAOFENG RADIO ON GRMS THANK YOU I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS.
Another great video, guys! Always enjoy watching your desert adventures.
Waiting for a couple of the UV5Rs to arrive and was looking for a quick use guide. Outstanding video many thanks.
miklor DOT com Pretty much anything you ever wanted to know but was afraid to ask.. this guy has information for you.
I'm a ham radio operator and I personally don't see a problem with the Baofeng i use a TYT TH-9800+ A Baofeng UV-5r+ and a Baofeng UV-5RA
I've got the same - tyt th-9800+, a bf-f8+, and 2 uv-82's - I actually like the uv-82's better.
UV82 is better than the UV5R, imo. The BTECH models improve upon the quality of transmission over the Baofeng radios also, but they're more expensive (and worth it)
Great video for beginners. I’ll definitely be sharing this video with my friends that are just starting out. 👍
I would take your word over theirs any day Russel. Stay strong brother.
Very easy vid!! Have my unit programmed with a GMRS frequency and a NOAA weather. I didn’t accidentally transmit on HAM or police/fire frequencies.
If you are programing with chirp, There is a spot where you can disable the transmit function for the frequencies you do not want to transmit on.
i love them... i got one when they came out years ago with them and it still works flawless.. also got a newer one because they simply cool devices and the work
1:39 On the contrary, I got my HAM license BECAUSE of these cheap radios. They are great radios and I would recommend them to anyone. I have 4 of them that I loan to my friends and family when we go out on an adventure.
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Very minimal but so freaking clear. Thanks.
Talked me into it, thanks for the excellent content
Just starting to look around at diff personal radio options and found your channel. Thanks for all the great info!
This is helpful. I bought one for emergency purposes
The best and clearest explanation of this I have found - thanks 👍
Thanks for the tutorial. I just bought 2 for my Autistic son and me. I have been given 2 Motorola gp328 units but honestly too big for him. And i have heard the baofeng uv5r is excellent for the money. If he breaks it, I can order another like you said. Youve been a big help! Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
Do you have a video that explains what each menus item means & does? I have a vague idea from other videos but I feel like nobody else could explain it better.
Best explanation yet, I thought it was hard
For offroading, I own both a gmrs and a ham, both are boafeng and both are very inexpensive. I also have a handheld CB. I probably have less than $120 spent for all three together.
If you don't tell anybody you can program GMRS and 2 Meters and 70 cm all on the UV5R.
This is the best video I’ve seen that explain how to operate these videos.
Thank you! This takes some of the unknown out of them, for the newbies. Got my license and the radio should be delivered today. 🤞👍
Iv had my radios sitting in the box for months every video on RUclips was confusing in less then 5 min I got them going thanks
Same lol
Hate to be a sad ham HOWEVER love the newer videos with your technical terms like fars, FCCEES. Granted this was informative
So is a “Channel” just a stored specific frequency ?
Yes.
Thank you for being very helpful and enjoy the humor that some ppl can't understand or just can't. hahahahahahahaha keep creating great how to videos.
We or lucky in the U.K. we do not kneed a license to use the public frequency we did have to for the old FM CB radio back in the 80s
Thanks for the good information. I’m pretty new to overlanding . I’m putting together a Jeep/trailer combo. I’m upgrading from a Walmart bubble radio setup. I’ve ordered the BAOFENG UV-5R5 hopefully I can figure it out with the help of your channel
How do you find an unused frequency to start using for your group?
Use GMRS frequencies
Hi Randy, first let me say you have fun and funny videos. I got my Commertial FCC LICENSE in my 20s and worked in a two way radio shop. Then the price of 5 watt VHF and 4 watt UHF portables were over $1000.00 each made by GE land mobile or Motorola and they struggled to just transmit and receive. The Baofengs of today do it so well and easily for $20 to $30 bucks. So hams hate Baofengs ? Oh hell no quite the opposite i love the 10 that I have they are great little radios !
Keep up the fun Randy just keep up the fun!
How the hell does almost 500k people watch these videos but only a handful of thumbs ups?
