    Honestly. The fact they split MJ and Peter up isn't what bothers me about this story. It's the fact that Peter the hero who is supposed to embody responsibility does something incredibly selfish to avoid facing the consequences of his actions. If it had been handled better(Like say MJ was the one who got shot or they had this HUGE story arc involving Peter and MJ's marriage falling apart in a realistic and believable way) I guarantee you this story wouldn't be that big deal 10 years later. Instead it's 10 years later and people are STILL complaining about this. It's astounding how badly they fucked this up. It's almost transedent.

      Sins Past takes the cake. One More Day is awful, truly awful, but Sins Past besmirches the memory of an innocent character whose death literally ended the silver age of comics. As stories, they're both abominations, but Sins Past is vile for what it does to Gwen.

    Even though I massively disagree with the editorial mandate to undo the marriage, here's how to fix the story.
    Have Mary Jane get shot instead of Aunt May. Peter discovers she's going to die, and makes a deal with Mephisto to save her. But Mephisto will only do it if he gets to also undo the marriage, as Mephisto wants to feed off Peters misery or some dumb shit like that. Have Peter remember the deal but MJ doesn't, and if he tells her she'll die, which would give Peter a reason to keep his distance from her.
    So Peter will lose MJ either way, but at least this way she'll live. This way Peters deal becomes a selfless act instead of a selfish one. You could even link it back to Gwen, and how Peter failed to save her, and him say he can't fail to save MJ this time.

      The fact that you came up with a better and more logical story than a staff of professional writers and editors is really fucking sad. Sure the marriage being erased still sucks, but at least your idea makes sense and doesn't make peter out to be a whiney dipshit.

    I must say, Sal, it's very satisfying to hear you call out _Brand New Day_ for the eye-roller that it truly was. I've seen far too many fans try to defend _Brand New Day_ as a great period that "rejuvenated" Spider-Man when it was actually a huge creative failure. Almost all of the new villains, supporting characters and sub-plots introduced during _Brand New Day_ didn't stick around and were either dropped, ignored, or written out of the series entirely.

    I have a lot of trouble wrapping my head around why the marvel editorial thought this would be a good idea. What spider-man fan really thought it would be better if Peter was single? Honestly this feels like a bunch of men trying to fix something they didn't agree with when they were kids, current fans be damned. Obviously the reverence for comic relationships like Sue and Reed Richards, Green Arrow and Black Canary, Superman and Lois, etc prove that comic fans are fine with this sort of stuff.

    Yeah I still remember taking my original copies of the issues and burning them behind my high school. I was a pissed off 17 year old emo kid at theses books. I think a reason it's still hated so much is cause Marvel keeps acting man children about this. from rigging a fan poll that voted OMD as their worst book ever cause "we didn't appreciate it yet", the awful OMIT story that took Peter and MJ's wedding issue's panels of pre-wedding jitters out of context and revealing the bullet wound NO ONE can heal is fixed by Peter's "love", throwing MJ under the bus saying "well she took the deal and wanted out" ignoring Peter guilting her into it, having a X-Men wedding cover showing every marriage in Marvel but Peter and MJ's cause "they only wanted happy marriage's" like you know Hank and Janet, Wanda and Vision, and Jean and Scott they all lived happily ever after..... And finally Tom Breevort saying that fans need to "shut up and take their medicine cause they now what good for us."

    I actually liked married Spider-Man. It’s just a part of character growth and change as time passes. Hell I grew up with Spider-Man and I read the past issues where he was single and struggling as a photographer, I also saw him get married and dealing with the issues of it. To me it was just natural. You can only keep a character the same age, in the same life situation before it gets stale, sure him being married may have felt stale but taking him back to a point he was in even before that doesn’t really seem fresh either.
    I personally thought the married man thing could have still worked if ya gave him an new element in it to deal with like I dunno.. a kid!!!! But nope marvel couldn’t have that. 🤦🏻‍♂️
    I mean we had Peter the high school student, Peter the college student, peter the single photo journalist and Peter the husband. The next logical step was Peter the father.
    Edit (12/31/21) - how having a baby could add to his story. Having to juggle crime fighting with an infant at home, hell normal parents have a hell of a time with losing sleep cause of the demanding nature of an infant. Use that to show the lack of sleep, the juggling of tasks wear on his superhero work. Have the strain and infant causes lead to arguments with MJ. Have MJ legit worried about Peter (the father of their child) getting hurt or killed while out there. Her being worried if he does get exposed it not only puts her life but the life of their child in danger. Also have there be an ongoing plot thread of both wondering if the child will inherit his powers with both hoping different outcomes.
    This all could have lead to MJ separating with Peter (just separating not divorce) and Peter has to move out of the house and into an apartment. We could then see him deal with that stress while continuing to fight crime. Another interesting twist, couples counseling where him and MJ talk to a counselor about their issues while talking code to keep his secret. Then ultimately MJ serves him with divorce papers and she and the child move.
    Then say a couple of years later in the publication we find out why, the child manifested powers like Peter and that scared her to the point where she took the kid to live isolated (home schooled) so no one would see the child has powers (like a babysitter seeing the child crawling up a wall would be an issue etc). We find out she didn’t want to divorce him but she wanted the child to have a normal life, that no matter how much she did and still loves Peter she will always choose her child.

    • @idongesitusen5764
      @idongesitusen5764 Год назад

      That simple pitch almost got me teary-eyed. Maybe the strain of not being able to see his kid as much due to the seperation would also affect his professional life (assuming he had a job like Horizon Labs/ Parker Industries) & knowing colleagues have to make excuses for his behavior; heck have Madame Web be part of helping them. If he found a relationship with someone else, that could cause some good Parent-Child conflict as long as his kid was pre-teen age (5-12).

    I'm a college student studying in they're arts, and I've done limited writing since high school. I've always considered trying my hand at drafting up a comic pitch for some of my favorite characters, especially Spidey. About a week ago, I suddenly had a huge brainwave that kept me up all night thinking, and now I'm seriously writing a pitch for a Spider-Man story with the working title "Sins of the Father". The goal is to deal with One More Day and all of the problems people have with it without retconning it out of existence or trying to reset the status quo to him being married. I am going to take the fact that my favorite RUclips series has chosen to talk about One More Day now as a sign that, at the very least, a story to deal with it is a good idea. Also, Sal, I'm half considering sending the pitch to you first before Marvel, so... Hope you hate this story enough to be excited to read about current comics Spider-Man saying it sucks!

    This story right out assassinated Peter Parker as a character ANYONE could relate. You could go out and ask anyone out on the street "Hey would you make a deal with a demonic figure JUST to save the life of an ailing dying relative from a SIMPLE bullet wound?"
    10/10 would say "NO! What are you STUPID!?!?!"
    This is the Story that makes me WARY to even go near most modern spidey comics to KNOW that this..THIS is part of Spidey's actions, that the guy who had fought to make things right for his Cloned "brother" Ben Reily when he got accused of crimes he didn't commit, the guy who FOUGHT against the EASIEST instinct to just END Cletus Kassidy's campaign for MAXIMUM CARNAGE because doing so would just only make him JUST like Carnage, the GUY WHO STOOD UP AGAINST THE MANY THOUSANDS OF CRIMINALS AND MANIACS WITH EVERYTHING HE'S GOT...Taking the EASY way out to get SOMETHING he wants. Something which I am VERY sure that he's faced with the chance to get his uncle or his parents back in probably the same manner of way and said, FLAT OUT "NEVER"
    but yeah it was to get rid of a marriage that made "PETER LOOK OLD" and didn't want a NORMAL divorce because "IT WOULD MAKE HIM OLDER!!"
    Blech.
    I am with Lewis Lovhaug on this mindset: If this Deal was dealt with FACE FRONT and directly in a story, I will follow Spidey's exploits all the way back upwards...HAPPILY.
    until then Marvel, THIS hangs over your head.

    Editors couldn't handle the marriage of one of the most iconic couples, and so a very terrible storyline of a demonic deal destroys it.
    Now we have a cursed Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson that are shadows of themselves.

    The sad part of this is that Marry Jane and Peter will likely never be together again anytime soon. Slott is one of those writers who needs Spider-Man to be single. Slott has done some good stories so I'm not saying he's a lazy writer but he's just one of those people. With MJ in invincible iron man it's not gonna happen for a very, very long time.

    My question is who's bright idea was it for Green Goblin and Venom to forget Spider-man's identity.
    Firstly it makes no sense because their history is so entwined with Peter Parker's life. Are you telling me that Norman doesn't remember why he killed Gwen Stacy or why Venom broke into MJ apartment? That's ridiculous.
    Secondly it ruins the characters. They are instantly less interesting characters by not knowing who Spider-man is. It just turns them into generic super villains instead of personal threats.
    Lastly it's not even consistent with other characters. How can Jackal and Morlun remember but not Venom. It's bullshit!
    At least Green Goblin is sort of back. I've given up on ever seeing classic evil Venom again after that awful symbiote home planet story.

    • @TevyaSmolka
      @TevyaSmolka 8 лет назад +17

      I agree it's bullshit that venom aka Eddie Brock and green goblin don't know Peter Parker identity that's what's pisses me off even more because those two villains were far more interesting knowing Peter Parker identity then without :(

      @GreenGoblinsOckVenom 6 лет назад +11

      Which one? The 90's one or the 2015 one because the 2015 one was great.

    • @DrMadd
      @DrMadd 6 лет назад +4

      Darth Shadow I think both are bad. I did not like the 2015 version because of all the wasted potential and bad retcons.
      A planet of nothing but symbiotes could have been an amazing story about the Guardians trying to escape the planet before being consumed by the residents. Instead we get: "don't worry guys symbiotes who have ALWAYS been evil are conveniently not evil and never were. Also they have a dues ex-machina which makes Agent Venom a less interesting character with a stupid costume".
      The story takes one of the most creepy characters in the Marvel Universe and turns him into a worse version of Blue Beetle. Hopefully it gets retconned later that the Klyntar actually are evil monsters and only pretended not to be for some sinister agenda because making Venom and Carnage secretly good guys makes absolutely no sense.

  • @MiseryBrick
    @MiseryBrick 6 лет назад +10

    Coming back to this episode after reading the first couple issues of Nick Spencer's run.
    Like this screwed Spider-Man continuity and removed a lot of interesting arcs and moments in Spidey's history such as Harry's resurrection and with Brock and Norman knowing Peter's secret identity. This did cause the mentality around Marvel about that "good ol' Parker luck", where he should never be happy and act like a total child regarding all of his circumstances, and just not considered on the same level as his colleagues. Just because they wanted Peter to revert to his silver age status, despite being a man in his 30's.
    Also while this isn't Quesada's fault for the retcon, this story most definitely doesn't work as Peter and MJ came to accept Aunt May's passing in #400. Especially with her knowing and telling them it's her time to finally go.
    As someone who, even as a CHILD, loved the Peter and MJ relationship, this turned me off of reading the character for a while and just never understood the fascination of cliched material that could come from a flavor of the month romance. (Like Ethan said, it's just lazy writing for lazy writers.)
    Here's hoping Spencer going back to basics will result in one of the positive moments in Spider-Man's timeline.
    But aside from my rambling, I think this was a nice run through and explanation of one of the worst books that's come out of Spidey's history, so great job Sal!
