Impact Player for about 4 years before Marvel brings him back. Despite bringing in like four other Wolverine analogs to replace him. It's the reign of the Supermen all over again.
The retelling of this story by you guys is about 100000x more entertaining than the actual story. I distinctly remember putting this book down as a 20 year old who was a big fan of Bendis and just viscerally griping aloud, "wow, what a piece of shit."
Now that I think about it, hearing Sal recount this whole event, that I realise that Age of Ultron is just that segment from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V where Homer tries to fix the toaster but ends up making a time machine with Wolverine in the role of Homer Simpson and Ultron in the role of . . Ned Flanders. God how I wish there was a timeline where Wolverine kills Hank Pym in the past causing it rains doughnuts in the present.
Yup. In Rage Of Ultron by Rick Remender. Came out around the same time as the age of ultron movie (which was no relation to the comic other than character and name).
Wolverine shows up back in the original timeline and tells his story. Hank Pym: So you really killed yourself? Wolverine: Well maybe I didn't incinerate every single cell, but basically I killed him....yeah... Disbelieving stare Time breaks. Incursions start. Deadites rise.
This may be one of your best Back Issues episodes ever! The reactions, the intellectual discussion at the end, and the "loophole" about Death of Wolverine, great job guys!
Another analogy I've heard that's similar to Ethan's supernova comparison (1:01:42) is a rubber band that repeatedly snaps. While it can be tied back together, it gets smaller and more fragile each time it's broken.
this was my first comic. I loved the story. yes it didn't add much to the continuity but it was a fun to read the perspective of alternative reality of characters like captain America.
I REALLY enjoy this edition of BackIssues!! I wanna see ALL of the edits, and ramblings on time travel, on next episode of Tangents! .... AND I MEAN ALL OF THEM, SAL!!!!
Holy shit! Can we have a side show where Ethan just explains physics to us? Call it "Getting Phisical with Ethan." Anyway, thanks for another great episode!
Pretty sure he went as far as the analogy would stretch the first go around, after the supernovas I was worried ninja was going to drag qe into some multiverse explanation and I was going to have to bail small doses work, small doses
Howard Roark I often find myself on both sides of the fence when it comes to "realism" in comics. On the one hand, I scoff at the ambiguity behind the meaning of "time shattering" or "punching reality". Magic exists in Marvel and DC so it sometimes irks me that when they want to do something completely insane they don't just say "it was magic" and leave science out of it. On the other hand, I resist the idea that vaguely defined concepts like this can be put into a box where "that wouldn't have happened". It's easy to say "well if time shattered then nothing would exist anymore so this doesn't make sense", but real physics is often quite non-intuitive. And since I don't know what the heck it even means for time to "shatter", it's hard to say what would or would not result from that. So when Sal or Ben (usually Ben) express incredulity with some of the more outlandish uses of science in comics, I try to come up with analogies that would explain why it might not be so far fetched. To me, if you accept that "time shattering" is a thing, it doesn't make much sense to then pick it apart because you're already well outside of anything even remotely real in physics. At that point its more fun to try to come up with something real that it might be similar to, and maybe expose people to just how weird and interesting real physics can be.
Ethan explaining the Bendis time-travel rules as magnetic re-connection in the Sun is brilliant. Bought trade number since I started watching Back Issues: 19
There was an awesome episode of Red vs Blue where the same character kept going back in time to fix a problem and he ends up meeting a crap ton of himself. Each one tells him don't bother it won't work.
You guys had me really confused on this one. I saw the "What If? Age of Ultron" book, so that's the one I went out and bought. A quarter of the way through I thought "Either Sal had a seizure during this episode and was just rambling, or I bought the wrong one." Then I found the right book, should have checked the link in the description, but I try not to buy online unless necessary, since my brick and mortar local store needs all the business it can get these days.
Doesn't it seem like an easy way to bring Wolverine back from his recent death is that the main Wolverine wasn't killed? He's been living out of a cave on one of his nature sabbaticals.
Don't know if you guys keep an eye on the comments of these old videos. I just had a brainwave about Age of Ultron, the absolutely horrific comic, inspired Flashpoint and the change from New 52 into Rebirth!
So Age of Ultron is the reason why the All-New X-Men CAN'T go back in time. Cause time still works, but not as well as it did. I just realized this while watching this video. I hated reading AoU, but it really was a good catalyst for everything currently happening in Marvel.
45:34 "just go back in time and kill Morgan Le Fay" "YOU CAN'T JUST KILL MORGAN LE FAY" Isn't that the plot of the first arc of Dark Avengers that Bendis wrote like 3 years before Age of Ultron? lmao btw I discovered this channel last month and I've been watching every video, you're great
They had access to a time machine but chose to go to the future to battle forces they couldnt possibly beat rather than go back to the past where they could if not affect change then at least prepare for Ultrons rise???
aaaaaaand Sal has correctly predicted how they're bringing wolverine back to life some time from now. Wolverine A that "died" in death of wolverine remains as such, but the wolverine B that got "killed" off panel by wolverine A in age of ultron, didn't really die and later appears as having been hiding in a sort of sabatical decade or two and is now ready to go back in action for whatever reason.
Hey!! I made a fan made trailer as if they had done the comic version for the film. I slightly altered it and I made a description of what's happening in the trailer so you can understand. Just thought you would like it. Tell me what you thought!!
She’s the heart of the fantastic four. It’s not within her character to immediately want to strong arm or force her Allies to do what she wants. She’ll try and reason with them. Even when she knows they have really bad ideas
Like you said. You tell someone or make someone not do something. Some people will retaliate. It’s not just the big brains. Wolverine can be STUBBORN. But by reasoning with him and respecting his thought process, free will, and autonomy she hopes she’ll be able to get through to him in a civil manner
Recently subscribed to the channel and I really dig the Back Issues with this crew but all of a sudden I noticed that Ben and Ethan always seem fresh to these story arcs. So what do they/have they read to contribute to the channel? Loved the callback to King Arthur & the knights of justice... I guess B&E make some fun side commentary
I only just now realized that Ultron basically took a page from the Bastion play book. Access the future/past, send a bunch of drones from the future to attack the past.
TV Little House Comics I remember it was cool because blood was actually portrayed. If memory serves, the blood was even (gasp) red. Great job with these vid; it really brings back memories.
Hello 2017 Sal. To quote you from 2014, "You'll ruin the whole comic book industry if you Reboot to many times." Did you ever think we'd actually be at the point where the literally would be yearly reboots?
He basically transmuted the car like an alchemist. Taking only the contingents in that car and bending them in an impossible way to form an Ultron. With all the same components before the transformation.
I've noticed that you guys show pictures of different snapshots in the comic except when you show Ethan and Sal and i REALLY what to know what you guys are looking at so im saying you guys put those pictures in
This actually explains the 616 Ultimates. Only now did someone decide to start policing time travel, only after it's destroyed everything in multiple everywheres. One was not enough.
Star Trek TNG did the "head thing" in an episode where they find Data's head in a cave on Earth, and it's from the past. Which Data has no memory of being there. So the crew goes back in time and teams up with Mark Twain.....and it shows time as circuitous and self fulfilling lol (with a plot hole pertaining to Data's memory, but oh well..heh heh) There's an issue of X-Men, where Professor X has a (Batman style) list on how to take out every one of the X-Men if required, and his way to stop Wolverine was, beheading, then taking the head as far from the body as possible (then i guess try to destroy the two somehow) and speaking of plot holes (one of the many)...why didn't Logan smell Sue in(around?) the time machine?
Good episode. Only thing I hated about this story was Red Hulk, considering Green Hulk proved he was best Hulk in a certain story that was super awesome. More Hulk imo. Fuck Rulk.
Perhaps Ironman being the one to tell Wolverine not to go back in time and breaking time is a meta reference to the TIMESLIDE and whole Teen Tony period?
No, I have a BA in physics and I once took an astronomy class lol. I actually messed up the explanation a little bit. It is true that the sun's magnetic field gets twisted up and resets itself on a recurring cycle. But a magnetic re-connection is when magnetic field lines merge, releasing a burst of energy which can manifest as a solar flare. This happens many times over when the field is wound very tightly near the end of the solar cycle. Eventually the field becomes so twisted that reorients itself, the poles flip, and the cycle restarts. So I got the terminology a bit off but the basic point remains: there are natural precedents for systems becoming so complex and stressed that they destroy themselves and revert to a simpler structure.
Ethan Marsh Mixed terminology or not, still some pretty solid science. Sounds interesting as fuck, all this talk of magnetic fields and solar flares makes me want to re-watch Cosmos. Thanks for the clarification!
Me trying to go back in time and take out Hank Pym Me: your really this fascinated by me and my time machine. You are crazy! Hank Pym: THAT'S SCIENCE!!!!!!😜
Ok so this is how all the current stuff got started wolverine my favorite character broke time. I guess that is why they had to kill him off so he would not mess anything else. Dammit logan this is why we can't have nice things.
Hey so Sal, don’t know if you read these comments still. But I actually have the Age of Ultron Comic, And I’ve read it a bunch, and then I listened to you tell the story and I just had the revelation.... Like, The Wolverine that makes it at the end, That’s the Age of Ultron Wolverine, The Age of Morgana Wolverine, he dies, right? Age of Ultron Wolverine kills him........ Where the fuck was present day Wolverine? Shouldn’t there be a Wolverine that never went through Age of Ultron alive in the present day universe?
LeGioNoFZioN I bought an issue of that run the other day on a whim. It had Iron Fist and Power Man in it, it was shockingly un-crappy! Although I did have the uncanny urge to buy Rom action figures when I finished reading it.
GankMo lol, I feel you. as a kid rom was one of the few toys I didn't have. Rom tied in the the X-men and New Mutants a lot towards the end of the run. I have fond memories of that book.
Trevor Merritt it was all about the comic, but back then most toys were crappy. they didn't have uber geeks who obsessed over toys for 30 years developing new ones in the 70's and 80's.
Wouldn't there be 3 Wolverine's at one point? #1: The one that killed Hank Pym and then went back to stop himself from doing that #2: The one that Wolverine #1 stops from killing Hank Pym #3: The one that already exists in the timeline that Wolverine's #1 go back to when they shut-down and defeat Ultron So when Wolverine #1 is killed by #2, wouldn't there still be 2 alive in the main universe?
Wait, I think we missed something.. Wolverine went back in time from the Age of Ultron, kills Hank Pym, causes the Morgan La Fey Future, convinces Hank to change the program instead, and then Age of Ultron Wolverine kills the Wolverine that had lived through the La Fey timeline.. but, what happened to the Wolverine that was alive during the 8 days Prior?
I REMEMBER this. Oh man I never finished it. I felt like this was Marvel's final push to MAKE people like Hank Pym. Like I remember saying to a friend at the time, no one likes Hank Pym, he is no one's favorite character. So how some way that reached Marvel and they were like, FUCK YOU! YOU DON'T LIKE PYM WE'LL SHOW YOU WHAT MARVEL WOULD BE WITHOUT PYM!.. And still no one cared.
Wolverine must of watched "Back to the Future" and thought to himself. "They shoulda just killed Biff"
"You know what'll fix this?.....Time travel."
Oh Logan, you will be missed.
Impact Player for about 4 years before Marvel brings him back. Despite bringing in like four other Wolverine analogs to replace him. It's the reign of the Supermen all over again.

Favorite episode ever XD
I lost it at : Why don't we stop Eve from eating the apple.
Subscribed after watching this. My one regret is that I didn't know about this channel sooner.
Thank you!
Yup. In Rage Of Ultron by Rick Remender. Came out around the same time as the age of ultron movie (which was no relation to the comic other than character and name).

Disbelieving stare
Time breaks. Incursions start. Deadites rise.
azulral Groovy.
Really liked Ethan's solar magnetic fields analogy. Interesting and likely more thought out than what they were thinking.
Lol, that double face palm at 38:48.
That's actually way better than what I said. I think my brain was stuck in astrophysics mode.
this was my first comic.
This is why I love you, marvel explained, and comicstorian. Because you guys can tell the same story, yet make it so different.
Wow! So the time shockwave from Age of Ultron is what eventually caused the events leading up to Secret Wars.
after the age of ultron, shouldn't the real question be what happens to the universe when you kill death.
The writers of Endgame must have read that fantastic four time travel story.
What if the Age of Ultron lasted about a day give or take? MCU: Hold my beer.
Looking back at this event, it is one of my favorites! imo it has aged really well and has become better with time
Holy shit! Can we have a side show where Ethan just explains physics to us? Call it "Getting Phisical with Ethan." Anyway, thanks for another great episode!
Lol Love that pitch
Pretty sure he went as far as the analogy would stretch the first go around, after the supernovas I was worried ninja was going to drag qe into some multiverse explanation and I was going to have to bail
small doses work, small doses
Small doses physics not Ethan jus realizeday come off assholish, & qe: quantum entanglement

Why doesn't Magneto just walk up to Ultron and rip him apart like he did with Wolverine's skeleton?
Amazing question.
***** haven't you seen what magnets do to computers?
I think Magneto was already dead so they could avoid that... Oh My God this stupid event
Ultron demagnetized himself
Christian Linares when nigga, tell me when causd that's some dope ass shiznit
this is one of my favorite pre-couch back issues, so sprawling and epic [in a bad way]
27:00 is literally a line from Avengers Endgame
Ethan explaining the Bendis time-travel rules as magnetic re-connection in the Sun is brilliant.
Bought trade number since I started watching Back Issues: 19
"Moonknight cant sell more than two issues,"
Moonknight proceeds to become one of the most steady titles under Marvels belt for several years
And now has a show.
@@jm329I wish they would do more back issue of him now that he’s much more popular, and a lot of his comics are good man..
There was an awesome episode of Red vs Blue where the same character kept going back in time to fix a problem and he ends up meeting a crap ton of himself. Each one tells him don't bother it won't work.

Doesn't it seem like an easy way to bring Wolverine back from his recent death is that the main Wolverine wasn't killed? He's been living out of a cave on one of his nature sabbaticals.
Totally. The guys and I actually have a theory that there's a third Wolverine running around somewhere.
came back to this video because Ethans explanation of a magnetic re-connection is so damn rad i had to hear it again
This is one of the best episodes.
Don't know if you guys keep an eye on the comments of these old videos. I just had a brainwave about Age of Ultron, the absolutely horrific comic, inspired Flashpoint and the change from New 52 into Rebirth!
I've never heard anyone else reference Ecco the Dolphin... yes!
You can't just KILL all your problems BEN! Lol
I kind of despise time travel stories. They make my head hurt.
So Age of Ultron is the reason why the All-New X-Men CAN'T go back in time. Cause time still works, but not as well as it did. I just realized this while watching this video. I hated reading AoU, but it really was a good catalyst for everything currently happening in Marvel.
I think Ben just described the end plot of Bender's Big Score.
45:34 "just go back in time and kill Morgan Le Fay"
"YOU CAN'T JUST KILL MORGAN LE FAY"
Isn't that the plot of the first arc of Dark Avengers that Bendis wrote like 3 years before Age of Ultron? lmao
btw I discovered this channel last month and I've been watching every video, you're great
Lol once we actually figure out how time travel works in real life so many comic stories will be fucked haha
That King Arthur show, I remember! It was called King Arthur and The Knights of Justice.
Referring to 45:35 : So can we assume that Ben is now planning to take over TV Little House after he finishes killing all of his problems.
Iron Man- “WOLVIE YA GOTTA STAHP YOURE BREAKING TIME”
Wolverine- “I’m thinking it’s Time for some more Time Travel, bub”
They had access to a time machine but chose to go to the future to battle forces they couldnt possibly beat rather than go back to the past where they could if not affect change then at least prepare for Ultrons rise???

i know they'll bring him back i just hope they leave it alone for a long while... at least like 2 years :P
Zeke Dixon-kitt but i know they wont :'c
Hey!! I made a fan made trailer as if they had done the comic version for the film. I slightly altered it and I made a description of what's happening in the trailer so you can understand. Just thought you would like it. Tell me what you thought!!
Whoa. Hocus Pocus reference on Back Issues? Watch out world, Ethan just went early 90s ABC Family on your ass. D:
Funny thing is Ben and I spent Halloween watching HP. I don't think it was on ABC Family, tho.
I think the last time I remember watching it was on that channel.
She’s the heart of the fantastic four. It’s not within her character to immediately want to strong arm or force her Allies to do what she wants. She’ll try and reason with them. Even when she knows they have really bad ideas

I only just now realized that Ultron basically took a page from the Bastion play book. Access the future/past, send a bunch of drones from the future to attack the past.
This one either needed to be 10 issues longer or 8 issues shorter.
Time travel makes everything better...but it doesn't make everything good.
wolverine should have asked tony why didn't he think of any of that smart shit in the first place.
I bought a Moon Knight comic, back in the 80s. It had a werewolf . . .
That's awesome! Sounds about right... Wolf, moon, etc
I sincerely hoped not.
_"I didn't do or think of those things because I'm Wolverine! I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do... Isn't very smart."_
"Fuck you, I don't believe it." Haha, great line.
Luke Cage survived, only through a Hanukkah miracle!
Marvel just got back the rights to ROM this year.
I wonder if this will get Bendis to go back to Marvel.
He basically transmuted the car like an alchemist. Taking only the contingents in that car and bending them in an impossible way to form an Ultron. With all the same components before the transformation.
I have been waiting for this... I can die happy now.
I finally read this last night after having seen your video a million times. I kinda liked it. It wasn't GOOD per se, but I had fun
I've noticed that you guys show pictures of different snapshots in the comic except when you show Ethan and Sal and i REALLY what to know what you guys are looking at so im saying you guys put those pictures in
alot of people hate this event but after hearing this it seems not that bad... it has great concept but the story is just everywhere.
This actually explains the 616 Ultimates. Only now did someone decide to start policing time travel, only after it's destroyed everything in multiple everywheres. One was not enough.
"Lawnmower Manny"
Is he like a generic version of Handy Manny?
lol
awesome back issues, thank you
i am very far back in time right now
The funny thing is, they made a Mountain Dew vending machine bot, and good name is...Dispensor 😅
Nothing happens but changes everything. Lol
I can only imagine if i ran into myself, my first question would be What did you dooo?
Dude I thought the story of time travel in this was gonna be the concept of endgame
Most interesting thing about Ultron is that Ultron wins. Twice it's shown that in the future, Ultron takes over. Ultron is really boss.
Hank Pim updated Ultron's privacy policy.
Star Trek TNG did the "head thing" in an episode where they find Data's head in a cave on Earth, and it's from the past. Which Data has no memory of being there. So the crew goes back in time and teams up with Mark Twain.....and it shows time as circuitous and self fulfilling lol
(with a plot hole pertaining to Data's memory, but oh well..heh heh)
There's an issue of X-Men, where Professor X has a (Batman style) list on how to take out every one of the X-Men if required, and his way to stop Wolverine was, beheading, then taking the head as far from the body as possible (then i guess try to destroy the two somehow)
and speaking of plot holes (one of the many)...why didn't Logan smell Sue in(around?) the time machine?
Good episode. Only thing I hated about this story was Red Hulk, considering Green Hulk proved he was best Hulk in a certain story that was super awesome. More Hulk imo. Fuck Rulk.
I'm a huge fan of Bendis's Avengers run, all of it. this storyline was kick-started there. would I like age of Ultron?
Perhaps Ironman being the one to tell Wolverine not to go back in time and breaking time is a meta reference to the TIMESLIDE and whole Teen Tony period?
I love you guys so much. Awesome episode
Ethan... are you an astrophysicist? Cos damn son, that solar science was solid.
Holy shit echo the dolphin I remember that
Apparently this is an instance where the movie did something more interesting. Even though I never thought it was perfect
that may be so. But ultron is still a better father than youll ever be
Sal, what if I told you this artist would write Justice League XDXDXDXD
Me trying to go back in time and take out Hank Pym
Me: your really this fascinated by me and my time machine. You are crazy!
Hank Pym: THAT'S SCIENCE!!!!!!😜
Jesus sal talks fast at the end
Fantastic episode!
Ok so this is how all the current stuff got started wolverine my favorite character broke time. I guess that is why they had to kill him off so he would not mess anything else. Dammit logan this is why we can't have nice things.
Like the longer vid
Can't believe it took me this long to find this channel. I've been watching yalls videos all day😂.All of y'all do a great job!
Hello to anyone watching this in 2021🤙
Spoilers from the future: Avengers Endgame's time travel works like that old story😂.
Hey so Sal, don’t know if you read these comments still. But I actually have the Age of Ultron Comic,
And I’ve read it a bunch, and then I listened to you tell the story and I just had the revelation....
Like,
The Wolverine that makes it at the end,
That’s the Age of Ultron Wolverine,
The Age of Morgana Wolverine, he dies, right? Age of Ultron Wolverine kills him........
Where the fuck was present day Wolverine?
Shouldn’t there be a Wolverine that never went through Age of Ultron alive in the present day universe?
If ultron was a cat, it would say imPURRfection..........sorry had to do it.
dissing Rom the spaceknight ... c'mon man.
my dad still has most of that run
LeGioNoFZioN I bought an issue of that run the other day on a whim. It had Iron Fist and Power Man in it, it was shockingly un-crappy! Although I did have the uncanny urge to buy Rom action figures when I finished reading it.
GankMo lol, I feel you. as a kid rom was one of the few toys I didn't have. Rom tied in the the X-men and New Mutants a lot towards the end of the run. I have fond memories of that book.

Did you notice the time paradox in Back to the Future where Twin Pines mall turned into Lone Pine mall upon Marty's return to 1985?
Yes we've known for a while, nice of you to join us.
+Leonard Fabian. Shit!!! Why am I always the last one to the party?
lol don't worry about I know people who've not even heard of star wars or back to the future.
Wouldn't there be 3 Wolverine's at one point?
#1: The one that killed Hank Pym and then went back to stop himself from doing that
#2: The one that Wolverine #1 stops from killing Hank Pym
#3: The one that already exists in the timeline that Wolverine's #1 go back to when they shut-down and defeat Ultron
So when Wolverine #1 is killed by #2, wouldn't there still be 2 alive in the main universe?
Another great video
Bring Back ROM The Greatest Of The Space Knights
its so bad everyone forgets it
even joss whedon thinks its bad
Wasn't the Timebrokers and Exiles created solely to prevent stupid ideas like these from happening?
