Everytime I hear Sal talk about Ironman I can't help but think of his drunken rant to Jarvis in Demon in a bottle (which I recently rewatched) "Shut up Jarvis, you're just a butler" "Very well, sir" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As far as I understand Ethan is a very busy guy. That being said I’d love to see a show where Ethan calls out the “science” in comics and tell us how it’s either BS or possible.
I agree with Sal’s point on adaptions. The point is to see what we enjoyed from the page in moving form in the movie or cartoon adaptions. Sure, you have situations where you can absolutely reinvent or do your own thing but when there’s a lot of great stories and characters to adapt, there’s no point in changing them
I love Sal, and your guy's opinion is valid in some ways. But I heavily disagree. If I wanted to see the story I just read, I would just read the story again. Adapting things to make a one-to-one copy on the screen is boring. I hate how fans now believe that is the only way to do an adaptation, and will cause mindless dramas because something is different from the source material. The backlash that creatives are getting for dairing to make any changes is stupid. Fuck that. I believe that if you are going to do an adaptation, keep the broad strokes and characters the same-ish, then do your own thing. Go in your own direction. Create something new with something familiar. It's why I enjoyed Full Metal Alchemist so much. You get two animated stories that start from a similar point, but then go in their own separate directions. Or DragonBall Super. The anime and manga both follow Akira Toriyama's notes and outlines, but the events that happen within each plot are wildly different, giving me two enjoyable adaptations for me to watch and read.
this take is also valid but it really feels like (i feel like this happens more with super hero stuff) a change happens just to dumb something down for the audience or just as an excuse for a creator/producer to go "that is my stamp on this characters legacy" And this would be fine if like more people would recognize the original books or if the publishers wouldn't change stuff to be like the movies. Its like if after Spider-verse people were like 2099 is a super buff angry Spider-man that protects time lines. Then a comic book fan would be like, no he isn't though. But then Marvel comes out with a new book where 2099 becomes that in order to appeal to the movie people in a storyline that makes no sense to anyone who only watches the movies.
22:31 So you’re telling me The Mandarin was a loser who made up his own backstory and then opportunistically took the first bit of power he could just to be a threat and be respected? Huh, Iron Man 3 did get that correct.
On the Mandarin in the Iron Man animated series: he loses the rings in season 2 and spends it regathering them till the final two episodes which are a two parter and Mandarin learns Iron Man is Tony Stark, it's great
During like 45:00 I was like “OOOOH they’re gonna have the baddies pilot tony as iron man once they find out who he is and USE HIM to commit crimes AND THEN tony is gonna have to fight himself with the drone while trying not to kill himself and eventually free himself! This sounds rad!” And then I watched the rest of the video and was severely disappointed

Yes, more Iron Man! Definitely want to watch and support more IM stories on the couch, because I've been re-reading the era of Warren Ellis '"Extremis," "Director of SHIELD," and Matt Fraction's run lately, and I'd love to see any of that period covered on the show. Just a crazy good run of comics with some really fun science fiction concepts being thrown around.
So glad you covred this story. I always thought I was missing something when I read the story years ago. I always though "hey where is the armor in this armor war? Seems like it's just generic villains and not really dealing with armor technology. Dragon stuff seems cool though." Now I did watch that animated series of Iron Man, and I remember there being 3 Fin Fan Fooms. Two were mecha units, one being gold the other silver, and then the real FFF. THAT would be a sweet Armor Wars. Iron Man vs. Mecha Dragons.
I love how there can be a whole hour long back issues about this book without even remotely touching on the insane Mandarin plot that takes up half the book
There are some of the best Iron Man moments in Romita Jr's run at this time. The massive Fin Fang Foom allied with the powerful Mandarin. Redesigned Living Laser. Great stuff.
Cool Beans, I got the most recent episode 😄. Been laughing along to your explanations Saul and crew! It's funny to think about how insane some these stories really are.
For those curious about the actual ending of Dragon Seed Saga other than "it ends disappointedly", Iron Man, in a last grasp of desperation, grabs Mandarin's hands and repulses them, causing a blinding blast that shakes the entire earth and destroys the rings, which subsequently defeats the dragons. Iron Man's armor has the color burned off, resulting in a cool chrome design, and Mandarin is revealed to be alive, but missing both hands. It was a pretty awesome ending to me.
I liked that Iron Man cartoon 😅. And to that shows credit he does wreck Iron Man and Force Works before he's defeated. Dammit now I gotta watch that show after this
I found one of the issues of this in a long box at my local comic shop. Unfortunately it was 5 dollars per single issues. I would’ve picked it up for the art but the story from what I saw was so weird, I didn’t feel like it was worth the money.
I had a few scattered Iron Man issues as a kid. Some of those were parts of Armor Wars 2. I had little to no context for most of what was going on. Still, they were fun reads.
Ethan..! Tiff...! Salvatore, my main man..! Pitch for ya: Freshman Year should have been a 7 episode live action series - starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei and introducing Brendan Gleeson as uncle Ben. Just the classic origin - a science fare mishap turns Parker into arrogant superpowered showboater, but fate teaches him THE lesson. Perhaps get Aaron Paul to play the "uncle slayer" (just to give that character some weight and dimension). Ben dies in the end of episode 2, and then we follow Peters journey through the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance - all cumulating in the final lesson: "With great power comes great responsibility!" Enemies like The Enforcers and Tarantula could lead up to the reveal of the shows "big bad": The Chameleon! - a copy-cat criminal bound on discrediting the reputation of New Yorks newest hero! (Simultaneously foreshadowing No Way Home, and establishing why JJJ hates Spider-Man). Just my two cents on the matter.
1:15:58 @comicpop did you unknowingly predict the future here or do have reality warping abilities and decided to bring RDJ back to satisfy your personal cinematic agenda?

Congratulations Tony Stark just killed himself🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
A new episode of Back Issues is like a shot of espresso for the soul
Very eloquent
A cold glass of coke zero for the soul
That’s exactly how it feels!!!
Memmmorrrrieeees!
Tiffany’s execution of the “sphincter ready” bit is masterful.
Must be Sal's birthday 😂
I will always love Sal and/or Tiffany talking about the often Circus of Events that led to a book's creation or story decisions.
Jim: "Tony...why...did you put yourself in the armor? Why didn't you use the drone? Or call the Avengers? Or use the drone? Or anything else?!"
Tony: 'I'm here for a good time, Rhodey. Not a long time."
That was…weirdly insightful.
Tony: “Dude, do you really expect me, a billionaire tech genius, to pass up trying out one of the best technological advancements that the world has ever seen and being the hero?”

As far as I understand Ethan is a very busy guy. That being said I’d love to see a show where Ethan calls out the “science” in comics and tell us how it’s either BS or possible.
Yes this would be awesome
I think there's a book covering that very topic. In fact, I think someone sent him a copy in an episode of Letters Page.
"What is an atomic cannon?"
"it's the 90's who cares!"
*me fondly remembering the 'black hole lasers' from Superman: Unchained (2013)*
it's funny David Michelinie went from Armour war to Venom because Venom is kind of like Peter's armour that went to a rival.

This channel is essentially the only time I really expose myself to Iron Man and its always a good time. Also that 90s Namor series is underrated.
Love when Sal picks an iron man story. Usually they're dumb and dumb stories make the best back issues. Keep up the good work guys!
25:19 Sal said "we never doing this" which this year of "broken promises" means "give few month".
22:31 So you’re telling me The Mandarin was a loser who made up his own backstory and then opportunistically took the first bit of power he could just to be a threat and be respected? Huh, Iron Man 3 did get that correct.
Somehow...it always goes back to Dragons.
You know, for a guy who is so anti-war, Tony suuuure lands himself in a lot of wars
It's ironic... and you stole my line.

On the Mandarin in the Iron Man animated series: he loses the rings in season 2 and spends it regathering them till the final two episodes which are a two parter and Mandarin learns Iron Man is Tony Stark, it's great
A whole team piloting Stark like a Megazord is so funny
Armor Wars, the Iron Man story so nice they did it twice. Like many great stories!
This is a very different tale from Armor Wars I. IMO it's much better.
During like 45:00 I was like
“OOOOH they’re gonna have the baddies pilot tony as iron man once they find out who he is and USE HIM to commit crimes AND THEN tony is gonna have to fight himself with the drone while trying not to kill himself and eventually free himself! This sounds rad!”

This episode put the image of iron man stopping a crime and flying away while emptying his back hatch on the ground into my mind

The Living Laser is such a good supervillain name
An Iron Man Back issues is a great early birthday present lol plus Sal really sold me on going back and rewatching that old Iron Man cartoon
Be careful what you wish for, I’m Jim Shooter should have been written on the front door of Marvel’s office
I love how much Ethan and Tiffany were constantly asking questions that Sal tried answering for the comic!
Yes! We got a "rollin in and take shit over!". I feel like it's been so long since we heard that. Now we need a "move the car George"
Punisher's iconic Tagline: I Just Do This
When you said the MARRS Corporation, I immediately thought of GI Joe and Destro’s MARS Corporation.

At least you can't blame Armor Wars 2 for being derivative of the original.
So glad you covred this story. I always thought I was missing something when I read the story years ago. I always though "hey where is the armor in this armor war? Seems like it's just generic villains and not really dealing with armor technology. Dragon stuff seems cool though."

The leaps in logic these characters go through for the sake of the story is wild to me. It’s the best, I love it!
I love how there can be a whole hour long back issues about this book without even remotely touching on the insane Mandarin plot that takes up half the book
Ok we NEED the Namor back issues episode
The last two issues of this arc were my first two Marvel comics. Been a fan of JRJR ever since.
Batman = stabbed by a hooker
Iron Man = shot by a one night stand
Maybe rich superheroes should stay away from women
I love me some armor wars between iron man and his closet full of murder weapons that also everyone seems to have
"He had a second bottle, with an even BIGGER demon" lmfao
I didn't expect Tiffany to suddenly mention gundam, but i love it!
I love the new scoring system Ethan came up with for the science of the story
How many semi-incestuous-twin-brother-and-sister-villain-duo's do Marvel have, exactly?
I love the syncronised outfits between Sal and Tiff. Checkers/Plaid over Captain America Tshirt. Idk if that was intentional but you guys look great!
So excited for back issues every week.
Tiffany is Queen for rephrasing Marvel Super Heroes FG
"Behold!" 😂 😂👍🔥🔥
I had no idea there was a armor wars 2 because I always assume there was only one iron man armor wars.

Omg!!!! This is is my favorite Iron Man story, partly for writing but mainly because of the John Romita Jr art. 😍

"100% BETTER!"
"oooh noooooooo..."
"He doesn't fight purples"
Except he did one issue before this arc. Samurai Steel is purple. But he did have a head.
I think that Woman looking after Tony in San Francisco was Typhoid Mary.
Iron Man: Chip War wouldn't have been as catchy but more accurate.
