You should do back issue on Batman/ Superman issue 16-22 and annual issue from 2021 it sliver age Batman and sliver age Superman meeting each other/ crisis on multiple earths
I’m the best friend of one of yawl’s biggest fans & commenters Ben Parrish. We are two nigh-40 yr olds that have been writing a 4 novel series “The Norseman Saga” that we hope to self-publish by September of 2024 Nashville in the building
As sad as it is now with his passing, I can’t hear Alan Grant’s name without thinking of Ben saying “the man who’s neither Alan Moore or Grant Morrison”.
I know the other Clayfaces are iconic for being full on clay people, but I feel that the Preston Payne Clayface is underrated. He's just so 'weird', but in a way that would make for a great horror comic. Also, RIP Alan Grant. We lost another giant.
One of my favourite versions of Clayface is from The Batman 2004 series whose name is Ethan Bennett and is an old friend of Bruce Wayne's and is an entirely original character for the show. Are you guys familiar with it? While not as good as the Animated Series, some characters like Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Batgirl and surprisingly Firefly are actually much better handled than in the animated series.
Thank you, I also thought the animated series never really got the best handle on Catwoman. The “ Batman for the animals“ was always a weird concept, and by the time they got around to telling better Catwoman stories, it was around the fourth season with that weird redesigned… The Batman cartoon had a pretty cool Catwoman
Alan Grant (R.I.P.) and Norm Breyfogle are definitely one of my favorite duos to work on Batman, with this definitely being a highlight of their tenure on the character. However, my favorite Batman story of theirs is probably the first appearance of the Ratcatcher. That is one seriously underrated tale and character.
This is the only comic channel where you can be having a serious discussion about Batman and then 20 seconds later have a random tangent on Jurassic Park. I love this show.
I’m disappointed that at not one point in the story all the Clayface’s don’t morph together into a giant tidal wave and try to drown Gotham in a… Mudslide… still a fun story though
This episode just reminded me that Alan Moore wrote that Batman annual featuring Preston Payne and his relationship with Helena. That story is legit great.
You guys covering these older stories like Contagion, Prodigal, Ten Nights of the Beast, etc have made me appreciate this classic blue and grey suit with the yellow oval. I used to think it was goofy compared to the Black and grey but I really like it now.
Okay Sal, I completely love your best way to get into comics tangents. That is exactly how I got into comics. This is the second time you brought it up recently. I think we need a full comic pop returns video or CBR article devoted to this topic. I actually sent the last one to my mom who taught for 20 years, has become a private tutor, and teaches English and writing. One of her elementary students loves graphic novels. So I made a clip of you talking about single issues sparking the imagination and sent it to her because it sounds like a great learning and writing activity for her student.
The Mud Pack all share a collective brain cell, and that brain cell's coming from Matt Hagen. I only know of them because they were mentioned in my "Batman: The Ultimate Guide to the DC Comics Superhero" and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Even then, DC were so proud of the idea.
Every time I think of Clayface, I think of the one from Arkham City. I would love to see Matt Reeves’ version of Clayface in a Batman sequel. 7:57- as a fan of The Flash, yes Ben. You are 100% correct about STAR Labs.
Loved this episode. It seems like a random story arc but you ended up teaching us the long and somehow complicated history of the clayface character and powers.
Credit to Tif for keeping a straight face through Sal's rant. I was dying because I knew where he was going, but you played it totally straight while Ben was losing his shit. 🤣
Nice to see some love for the other Clayfaces. I keep forgetting there's been so many of them, since Basil's probably the most well-known of the bunch. I did enjoy Basil's semi-redemption arc in the pages of Tynion's Tec run and Ram V's Catwoman run, but I do wish Matt Hagen, Lady Clayface, or even Preston Payne could share the spotlight every once in a while.
Tiffany looking into the distance, disassociating while Sal and Ben are thinking up the "War Of Clay & Puppets", was extremely funny. Especially when it ended with "and then [Clayface 3 and 4] had a kid together"
Me, listening to Sal's step-by-step getting into comics explanation: That doesn't seem typical. Also me, looking at my copy of X-Force #33, part 3 of 4 of the "Child's Play" X-Force/New Warriors crossover event: Not typical at all...
Preston Payne will always hold a special place in my mudpit for the simple fact Lein created him with Rogers Mudpack for me is just pure comic book goodness.
There is an Alan Moore story on Clayface III and his insane love affair with the manequin Helena published in 1986/1987 in an Annual...would be a fun follow-up on his, hitting several points raised and much debated on your couch (Alan Moore + Clayface III + the bewildering pseudo-sexual affair with an inanimate object).
Clayface always seemed like a bizarre Batman villain. I mean we have a bunch of insane genius psychopathic humans and the next cell is a highly adept shape shifting mud monster.
And next to him is a mutant crocodile-man, and a lady who controls plants, and a guy who dresses up like a moth, etc. Batman’s rogues gallery has always been weird.
After the epic first 17 minutes (and identifying so hard with the "people getting out of comics give you their random comics" bit) I'm watching the rest of the episode even if its an hour of fart noises.
This is sounding like one of those comics that reminds you how goofy comics could be And how good you had it watching Batman the Animated Series when you were a kid. How lucky I was to get BTAS at the right time.
Sal’s way into comics is exactly how I got into comics. My first comics when I was 7 were Detective comics 588 (part 2/3) and a reprint of ASM 102 ( part 3 of the Six Arm Saga). Hooked me in and I’ve read ever since.
@1:35 What about some kinda weird Clayface-esque Voltron; Cassius Payne, Sondra Fuller form feet and legs, Basil Karlo, Preston Payne form arms and body, and I Matt Hagen will form the head. (LOL)
My first Batman comic was Legend of Dark knight 195 with Clay Face origin where he crushed everyone's skull with his hands and wrecks Batman. Fell in love with Batman stories immediately. It was so gothic and scary. That was written by Alan Grant too!!
15:53 that’s exactly how I got deep into comics, more specifically the long ass Maximum Carnage… Christ I remember getting part 12 in my first long haul of comics from the shop and thinking how the hell did we end up here? Pete’s parents are alive? Why is Venom in chains over fire? Who is this weird six armed Spider-Man with a Venom mouth? Why are these other lame superheroes in my Spider-Man comic? And is Maryjane smoking?!?! Yeah I definitely had to get more to figure out what’s going on
Fun fact, Preston and Lady Clay go on to have a kid called Cascious Clay Payne who is another Clayface in his own right for a time before Karlo returns
I mean... Sal's not wrong on how to get into comics. I inherited a bunch of 90s-early 00s books from my step-mom's brother and there were some gems in there. Dude had the entire FF vs. X-Men series and a four-part storyline where the Batfamily (and Huntress) were hunted by the military.
@@SpiralSine6 Just dug it up, it's called "Batman: Outlaws." Cover of one of the books is of Batman holding the corpse of Jim Gordon. Series was written by Doug Moench with art by Charles Yoakum.
Found all 4 issues in a dollar bin at a second hand store when I was looking for old cheap comics to wrap my Christmas presents in. I chose not to wrap my presents in this since it was a complete series but I very much debated it.
It occurs to me that what Gotham really needs is Code Enforcement. I mean if you just tear down all the abandoned amusement parks, movie theaters, toy factories......etc. These guys would not have such easy access to lairs. I mean there's a housing shortage and that's what drives them all to Gotham and why they just do not leave for greener pastures.
Sal....i had issues 2-3 of 4 of the MudPack. Never knew what was happening and everything you said is so true! Except I don't have my own show to force my non-wife and best friend about them haha

When I saw the notification for this at work earlier, I told the nearest coworker how excited I was that someone remembered a silly Batman story from my childhood, and made a video about it. This is sure to be a fun one.
Sal is right. When I was about 10, a neighbor of mine gave me about 100 comics because he was older. I did the same for my buddies kid when I got older. Hopefully he does the same because theres a lot of trash out there, but at least 80s comics were funny. Love you guys.
I got all four issues of Mudpack a few years ago. It's not Shakespeare or anything, but I enjoyed it. Comics are supposed to be silly and weird; they don't have to be Watchmen all the time. Also, Sasha Wood has an entire playlist about all the Clayfaces on her Casually Comics RUclips channel if anyone is interested.

Sal's entire getting into comics monologue is just the origin story for his hunting down of the Bloodlines event.
its his villain origin story lol
It's true. That's kinda how it was for everything before trades were everywhere. How I started too.

Sal explaining his journey with comics and this show was hilarious.

I loved it
Sal’s rant about the best way to get into comics is sooo good and accurate. Gotta clip that one asap
I definitely thought I was getting into Green Lantern at the ground floor with the New 52 🤡. I ended up on that exact journey. Lol
That was 9 year old me when I had parts five, six and eight of Ultimate Clone Saga
i think this is my favorite episode of back issues now
I felt that journey into comics. So funny and so accurate
Can totally agree with Sal! That was hilarious
15:55-16:45 is arguably a top 10 ComicPop best moment tbh
I literally did not see where he was going with that until we were there.
I know the other Clayfaces are iconic for being full on clay people, but I feel that the Preston Payne Clayface is underrated. He's just so 'weird', but in a way that would make for a great horror comic. Also, RIP Alan Grant. We lost another giant.
Absolutely, if they're going to put Clayface in the movies I hope its Payne, portrayed similarly to the Arkham Asylum: A Serious House version.
I always liked Payne's character, but he never seemed like a "Clayface". Maybe he can pop up again under another name.
Preston Payne is basically mano from the fatal five
One of my favourite versions of Clayface is from The Batman 2004 series whose name is Ethan Bennett and is an old friend of Bruce Wayne's and is an entirely original character for the show. There's no justification for calling Preston Payne a bad character when that issue exists. And his debut arc by Len Wein is great too.
“The mudpack” the story to break Sal to the point he tells his comic collecting life story
