The Lizard has never looked more intimidating. For all the criticism the writing gets, one thing that really works is just how much Peter is falling to pieces. The scene when he thinks he's killed Lizard the first time and he's begging forgiveness and clutching his aching head is really powerful.

Well, they did say they know how big comic pages of original comic art are. They’re huge, there are thousands produced monthly, shipping costs a lot and the companies have paid for it already. The people making the decisions not to archive were Adams’ era - John Romita Sr, Carmine Infantino et al. Guys who worked in the era of newspaper comics. Of course the situation is better now! Artists email work to Marvel, DC etc, keep the original art and sell to collectors. Must be nice to be paid twice for your work.

I love your way of presenting a comic story by not only telling it in a fun way but also giving a lot of context. Sals knowledge and inside into the comicworld will never stop to impress me. You guys brought me back into the hobby of collecting comics by showing me their value again after falling out of them as a teenager a couple of years ago. In the last two year I started to gather a lot of the most seminal Superhero Comics, especially Batman and Spider-Man (still my Favourites after all the years. Stories like Sandman or Saga are now between some of my favourite literature-based stories ever.

Why? Because this fuses the history, art and story of comics! And it works so well in this episode, just naturally.
Re: original art, I believe Marvel had a policy of trying to return original art to the artists if they can? I guess it’s all digital now so they don’t need to, but I did see a video of that somewhere on RUclips.

Erik Larsen will probably always be my Spider-Man artist of choice, and I always liked how Todd would draw masked characters and monsters, along with how he would compose panels, but I was never a fan of how he drew normal/unmasked people...they usually looked as though they had no bones, were made of Silly Putty, and were in various stages of melting.

It's one of my favourite covers of Spider-Man, if not THE favourite Spider-Man Torment #1! Todd Mcfarlane's art is truly unique, like every artist you have some not so good art but there are way more iconic pieces to make up for it and Todd definitely has plenty to be remembered. For John Romita Jr and Todd Mcfarlane are the true definition of what Spider-Man should look like in the comics, unfortunately today's art never does.

Whoa, so hearing how much the phrase "Rise above it all" gets repeated in this book makes me think of something. In the Spiderman Musical Turn off the Dark (which I saw on Broadway as a kid) they used "Rise above it" as the obligatory twist on the classic "great power, great responsibility" motto, and it was an important enough phrase that it got a major song and then a redux. I have to imagine this storyline is where they got that from.

People say the big sales were because of the collector boom, and that may have been a part of it. But as a kid at the time, I really was big into Todd McFarlane and Jim Lee's art on Spider-Man and X-Men. They were the first artists I actually knew by name and could recognize their work. I bought Spider-Man 1 and X-Men 1 as soon as I saw them, not because I was thinking I would resell those later on and get rich, but because I thought the art and the characters were really cool and I wanted to own those comics to keep for myself. If the Avengers or the Fantastic Four had relaunched with a new number 1 in the early '90s, I don't think kid-me would have bothered with those.

Not to mention you guys are just a funny now as you were 10 years ago (and more so).
P.S. Hey Sal, not trying to cancel you in any way or anything like that but apparently “peanut gallery” is considered a bit of an insensitive term due to it being used to mock the cheaper theater seats often used by poorer black patrons.
