Just a little note from my days in retail: A lot of packaging is bigger than it needs to be in order to help stop people from shoplifting! If it's too big to conceal easily, there's hope that it won't get stolen.
Manufacturers don’t care about shoplifting. As far as they’re concerned, that’s the retailer’s problem. This set is for a GIFT. They are trying to make it look like a quality item. The smaller the package, the less likely it is that people will pick it up. Most shoppers need to feel like they’re getting more bang for their buck. This packaging is all illusion to those shoppers. From a manufacturer’s standpoint, it’s always only about the display. Period.
i think with all these kits being a lot of packaging and a huge box is to remember, theyre trying to trick people into thinking theyre getting alot of items. for a lot of consumers, even subconiously, big box = more stuff.
That, plus they want to stand out on the shelves, and it helps keep brick & mortar customers from ripping open the packaging to "see what it looks like," then putting it back on the shelf to buy an unopened one.
I wanted to point out that there was a mixup in the soaps when testing! You made the single color bar out of the basic white soap but called in the shea butter soap later! :0 So that is why the single color bar didn't lather as well as you expected because it was just the basic white soap. It may also explain some of the melting issues maybe? I'm not familiar with melting shea butter that much.

A trick my sister and I do when we're making soap (we're just simple hobbyists) is we fill the moulds we're going to use with water, pour the water into a small jug, then convert the fluid measurement on the jug into the same number of grams of soap... Its not perfect but in a pinch it helps when your scales are broken and you only have a jug
Thank you for this. I bought the same kit at my local Walmart about 2 months ago to try my hand at soap making. I wanted to make some soap for family for Christmas and bought 3 kits. I started with the white soap bar and it gave me so much trouble too. I even tried to add the clear to the whit and it was just horrid. I was sure melt and pour wasn't for me and I ended up wrapping up the other two kits for family rather than making the soap. You sharing this with us has made me want to try again and maybe use some melt and pour from Hobby Lobby!! There is still time! Thank you!
I really really really like this channel and how much you value the origin and quality of the ingredients, and how much waste is produced from packaging... really mindful. I love it !!!
My 1st soap encounter was a kit from hobby lobby and it worked really well. Had oatmeal to add and several different molds. And then I took the dive and am making glycerin soap as a hobby business. I still think this walmart kit is for kids. Theyre sample bars, not full bars. Not terrible for the price though
Yaaayyy! I love these kit-testing videos!! I really like the two you did where you combined the types of soap, they both looked very pretty and (imo, as someone who sees soap as 'oohhh pretty!' and not in any professional capacity) it seems like they would be a more satisfying final product. I've never actually tried any sort of soap kit and it's really surprising to learn that giving actual measurements/amounts in the instructions isn't standard, I would think that would be a basic thing to put in the instructions.
Been in retail for decades and, not excusing it, but excess packaging is for a few reasons. 1. Fools you into thinking you are getting more. 2. Ready made gift. 3. Bigger package= harder to hide/ steal ( this is for very small things especially) . I bought a similar type of kit geared towards adults, cute looking, colour blocks, little boxes to put the finished soap in ( not the best for glycerine soaps but hey...) and a great book...which had recipes for loads of soap ideas with ingredients that totally didn’t come in the kit. BUT such small amounts of soap that you get will harden SO quickly that an inexperienced person may think they are doing something wrong. For me, this one, in particular because of the useless fragrance, is not worth $5. That’s $7 CDN lol. Maybe if I wanted to teach someone the basics without “wasting” my good ingredients? Nah, even then I’d rather use the good stuff because it’s gotta smell good!
we bought like 4 of those kits, rhey were on clearance at our walmart for $2.50, and... we had skull molds, and neon mica lying around with cedarwood and vanilla oils so we had lots of fun ❤❤❤❤‼‼‼ thanx for the review ❤🥰🥰🥰
Thank you Katie for cracking down on packaging! It’s an uphill battle but we must all do our bit, even when the odds are not in our favour. Ever wonder why some companies keep using oversized cardboard and plastic packaging? It’s because other companies need to sell cardboard and plastic. All industry is interconnected by the need to sell their products. For example; If all shampoo bottles stopped being made of plastic, how much money would plastic manufacturers lose? ‘Saving’ the planet will never be as important as making money for them.

Katie, love your energy and videos! Melt and pours have been my favorite this year. Thanks for reviewing the kit- I’d say this one is worth the cost. It’d be fun to learn how to make different textures (via soap molds or other).
I literally got this kit about a month ago. On the clearance rack at Walmart. I had it in the microwave for 45 seconds, it overflowed over my bowl and burnt dark brown. Apparently that was far too long, and to their credit, they said 20-30 second intervals. It produced a cloud plume of death that reeked like a poisonous carmel scented vapor that you know you shouldn’t huff. 8/10 would recommend. Slightly less for the discoloration of the microwave and toxic cloud that the evil queen from Snow White herself would deem a bit excessive.
When i started making soap back in march, I used the Ikea muffinmolds Katie uses in the video. I found that turning them inside out makes a cuter design for the soap :)
I absolutely love your channel and family. I never thought watching soap making we had me waiting for the next video. These test videos are very entertaining especially when Mommy has her little helper.

Yes! I love when you test kits. Honestly, you could try any kind of kit and I would love it. I am so glad you did this video. I got the same soap kit and a candle kit for Christmas and am using this as a reference when I make my soap bars Thank you!
I'm a graphic designer and I work in the fashion/jewelry industry mainly working in package design. I've been in this field for 5 years and I still don't understand excess packaging... at the company I work at, we really try to use as little packaging as possible because 1. save the environment.. and 2. its just overall cheaper that way... its so strange how companies will use all this extra packaging just to try to market their product as more "high quality"... not only is it a huge waste of money that the company is losing.. but also with their packaging being so large, it would be able to fit fewer on a shelf.. which is another loss for them!
Lydia (4): You make more soaps and we will make them. I love you and your daughter. We make soaps. And we used to not. *nyuuuum-pssht* Mama: I'd skip this kit and take my $10 to Brambleberry. For $10, I could get 1 lb M&P, a color block or two, and a trial size fragrance oil. That doesn't cover shipping and I'd need to use a silicone mold from home, but those soaps are dreamy and leave Lydia thrilled.
In the late 1990’s/early 2000’s I used to make soap using kits from Life of the Party. Their soap was pre sectioned into squares making it easy to cut with a sharp knife! They had some great scents for the soaps! I loved it so much I’d save the molds from the kits and buy more soap base, scents and color! They still make the kits are are available online! I even got to where I was making 2 and 3 tone soaps and half logs that I’d slice into smaller soaps as per the directions! I gave much of my soap away as presents! One of my sisters loved it because she didn’t have a lot of money saying, “I won’t have to buy soap for a long time!” 😂
I SURRENDER!!! After watching NUMEROUS of you videos...I have just subscribed. You are an artist and I love your attitude towards your audience. Anyway...just wanted to say Hi and wish you and all the family a Merry Xmas.
I bought and used this kit and it was fun to make! I only watch this channel I don’t make soap but for a complete beginner who just likes crafts, I really liked this kit. I got a kit from the same brand but it had a different fragrance, mold, and color. My mold also held about a whole soap cube.I still haven’t finished this video so I don’t know her review yet, but I just wanted to leave a review for anyone who is wanting to make this kit.
I do melt and pour craft with shea butter soap, and it does have a tendency to get weird and lumpy and sticky much faster than clear M&P soap. I've also found that it gets worse the more times you re-melt it. So it's kind of a pain to work with, but it is nice!
I made these soaps. I mixed them together and i didn't use their coloring and i added some fragrance to mine. They where kinda on the cheap side but i was impressed with it for maybe a kids project that aren't going to be using professional soaps.
So this month I made my first 3 batches of soap, and am planning the fourth for tomorrow! Followed your tutorial, though I did go a little off-script since I had different fragrances to work with. I got the celestial collection you talked about, as well as some clay additives (rose clay and sea clay) and both worked splendidly in two of my batches. The third batch I used was activated charcol, but that was more for appearances. All three of my batches worked out so well, and I'm looking forward to making the fourth! Thank you for giving me the confidence to make something so useful and amazing!
I bought these kits on clearance a few months ago with the intention of making them for Christmas gifts, I haven't made them yet but I'm glad I now know what to expect from them!
im so excited you tested this kit! I had been wondering about it for a while, and thought about buying the candle kit or the soap kit to make with my niece and nephew as Christmas gifts for family. thanks for testing it katie!!

“I’m going to put in the rest of the fragrance oil”
A few moments later.
😂😂😂 I’m dying.
I actually laughed so loud my son told me to be quiet XD
I am so glad you did this video. I got the same soap kit and a candle kit for Christmas and am using this as a reference when I make my soap bars
Thank you!
*nyuuuum-pssht*
Mama: I'd skip this kit and take my $10 to Brambleberry. For $10, I could get 1 lb M&P, a color block or two, and a trial size fragrance oil. That doesn't cover shipping and I'd need to use a silicone mold from home, but those soaps are dreamy and leave Lydia thrilled.
This really helped alot, my neice brought this kit and I was so unsure of the measurements too.. Good thing i watched this before getting started
Ive used this exact kit. And many of this company's other ones. The soap kits are by far the best in their brand (in my own experience).
I was so excited when I saw this! It’s the 12 days of soapmas! 😄
Katie you should think of creating your own diy soap kit it would be really cool giving the soap making experience to others especially to beginners.
One of my sisters loved it because she didn’t have a lot of money saying, “I won’t have to buy soap for a long time!” 😂
My first order from your shop arrived. I’m so impressed!!!
I mean, I would hope anyone using these would realize that they are a bargain soap project and not expect pro results! Love these videos! ❤️
I bought one my first time making m & p soap and it was done in 20mins sitting out
I love your channel I watch it every night when I go to sleep. You are amazing!
Just woke up to a new Royalty Soaps Video. What a great way to start my birthday. 🥳😁
Happy Birthday!!!!
I SURRENDER!!!
After watching NUMEROUS of you videos...I have just subscribed.
You are an artist and I love your attitude towards your audience.
Anyway...just wanted to say Hi and wish you and all the family a Merry Xmas.
I feel a Royalty Soaps soap making kit with exact instructions coming up 🤩
I bought and used this kit and it was fun to make!
Katie is the best!! 💙💙☹️soapmas ❄️⛄🤶🎅🦌🌲🎄❄️
This is my first soapmas and I am excited!
You can always fill the mould with water (to the level you want) then measure the volume.
My first Soapmas! Looking forward to all you have planned ❤
These videos help me get to sleep, thank you
