    what might help you also, is thinking low. People are used to thinking if the note is high, you automatically think oh here it comes and I can't reach it, because it's to high, what means you're forcing the muscles in your neck and that's what you don't want to do. What you have to do is, if you're getting high, you must think low, so your muscles will relax and you will get the confidance.

    I'll post an update video on how I go singing that phrase in a couple of months. Not only does it take a long time to build the coordination to hit the high notes, but then you need to spend time developing the tone, removing tension, singing it expressively. Remember guys what we are working for is PERMANENT CHANGE. We want to be able to hit these notes for our whole lives, not just to get us through one gig etc.

    You earned a sub man. Thanks a lot! I've been practicing singing by myself since I was a freshman, but I could never find videos on singing in this genre and Alex Gaskarth is one of my all time idols for singing because of how strong his voice is. I've always wanted to sound like him, hopefully it'll work for me.

    Good exercise. Definitely good way to get tactile stimulation to help relax the face and voice! Perhaps make sure your camera is focused well. Not sure if it's just me but it seems a little fuzzier than it should be.

    Amazing tip!!! i saw you doing this in a phil video with him, i thought it was just some specific thing i wouldn't understand so i didn't try it, but man! as soon i tried my range suddenly opened up as my tone etc, how the hell did that happen? lol, appreciate it! do you do this while doing vocal exercises?

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  8 лет назад

      +Misael V. :P Wow thanks so much for checking out all my vids! I do this exercise when i'm struggling to sing the melody. I use it when singing just over my vocal break, at about A4.

      Doug Zeigenbein Well Thank you for making them!
      On my own vocal journey for quite some time now, trial and error.
      Pretty serious about it, have made some good progress, literally study all day everyday lol my new years resolution was to improve a lot this year.
      So yea, always looking for some good info on the voice, good stuff right here.
      Expect me to stick around for sure.
      Considering your journey, your a good inspiration for people like me striving to reach a higher level of vocal transformation, your vocals are already pretty damm pro sounding to qualify for a mentor to such people.

    Hi, good video, I follow you from Peru. I've been practice really hard with songs of Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, I See Stars, All Time Low but I have problems to get to my head voice. I can't do it without it sounds like it's a falseto. If you could do a video explaining how to get from the chest to the head voice it would help. Thanks :)

    Thanks for sharing Doug. I'm a little confused. Are you singing the high notes in mixed voice or in full chest voice?

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  8 лет назад

      +svegaldde Good question! I'm singing in my mixed voice. I'll explain why now. The high note (even the one I embarrassingly broke at) is an A4. I have two approaches to singing this note A4, I could personally belt my full chest which I have the ability to do- but there would be a lot of tension and it would be even too powerful. What I mean is I could take the voice I am singing with at the start of the phrase "I've just got to tell you one last thing" which is full chest voice and just push it up to the A4, but that creates a lot of unwanted tension and overall damage to the voice.
      What I did instead is lighten it into my mixed voice, which I define as more of a blend between my head voice and chest voice. The great thing about practicing it this way is that even if it sounds a bit too light such as the way I'm singing it, OVER time you will have built a lot of vocal coordination and then you can do something called "rolling in the weight" of the chest.
      So long story short- singing it in the light mix to build coordination, one month from now it will be strong, then I can try and shape the tone more to sound like weighted chest because my vocal musculature can support it!
      P.S This is absolutely necessary to building your voice as you won't be able to sing high notes like high C unless you strengthen your mixed voice. Check out my Real Friends cover in the annotation at 1:05. It's my best sounding recording to date and you will hear the high notes sounding really good at G#4. BUT I was just using weighted full chest, still sounds good but I need to move on to achieve higher notes!

    • @svegaldde
      @svegaldde 8 лет назад

      +Doug Zeigenbein Thanks for this detailed explanation. I think I personally have found my mixed voice, so that I can connect from top to bottom without a crack. I just really need to bring this weight in. Will there be a Video about this topic?

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  8 лет назад +1

      +svegaldde Yep sure its a great topic, very soon I'll get to it

    • @svegaldde
      @svegaldde 8 лет назад +1

      +Doug Zeigenbein Actually I can explain my problem with a recent video Phil posted: "Singing through the Break/Bridge/Passagio." Towards the end of the video he sais "strengthen the bridge and rolling your chest through it." Well that's exactly the part where I stuck. I don't know how to do it without straining.

    Thanks for these videos man! I haven't taken vocals lessons since high school but I live in Austin Texas so there's plenty of good teachers here.
    Any tips of what to look for in a vocal coach?

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  8 лет назад

      +Chad Rockwell Hey man look for a vocal coach who has proven results, with transformations or successful artists. I have no doubt there are great teachers in Austin but just be wary of vocal tutors who just listen to you sing a song every listen without showing you foundational techniques etc.
      Above all make sure you get a teacher who is passionate about you being there and is actually listening!
