As a Guitar player for many years, the big appreciation I have for Page and Zeppelin was the ability to always grow and change it up. Look and listen to the band play a song live early on, a couple years later then again after that. Page may sound like he's playing the same song but it will be played in a completely different way. Parts added, removed and changed around. The same goes for Plant, Bonham and Jones. This IMO is the reason Zeppelin was masterful LIVE!! Never bored of repeating the same song thousands of times and writing it in. Each song Live was a fresh Jam, still enjoying playing together and getting in the groove. Don't forget Rolling Stone did similar writings of other top acts of the day. There was a lot of politics and money involved on who got great reviews and who didn't. In the end record sales and longevity separated the best from the rest. Cheers my friend, keep up the great work
I always loved the Mystique around Led Zeppelin. I was born in '70 so I missed their heyday, but they still ruled the World from Exile. I knew nothing about them when I was 10 yrs old, but could recognize them in an instant when I heard their music.
You know, it's really hard to pick Zep favorites, but this song is definitely one of my absolute favorites, from what is probably my favorite Zep album! Yeah, that reviewer for Rolling Stone was clueless! But then, like all people, critics' opinions tend to be just as varied as "normal" folks, which just re-proves that there is something for everyone, and not everyone will like the same things! Like you, I love the change-up from mellow acoustic, to rocking banger! And, like you, I also really Love the lyrics! Especially these lines: Many times I've wondered how much there is to know! and "Many" is a word that only leaves you guessing - Guessing 'bout a thing you really oughta know! Loved your analysis! Right on, on all counts! Thank you!
Clueless indeed. Go back and look at the reviews for Rush, now also acknowledged as one of the GOATs. I always equated Rolling Stone reviewers and Grammy voters as Priests of the Temples of Syrinx from "2112" or title character of "The Necromancer" of Caress of Steel: the Gatekeepers of "acceptable" culture.
Can you imagine what it was like to be a teenager bringing home "Houses of the Holy" the day it arrived at the stores, slapping it on the turntable, and out comes "Over the Hills and Far Away?" Another "hidden" Zep gem.
I remember the time when these heavy rock legend bands were around and the battles we used to have as fans when it came to favorite groups and their albums. Some defended the 'early' stuff, most agreed that they had a particular favorite album, while some enjoyed the whole catalog and others just hated that particular band. The personal taste and opinions of magazine critics was just part of extracting the very best from a group that we as fans demanded as well. As time goes by, often albums that were seen as 'sitters' would find a new enjoyment for a bunch of reasons. Most of the time me and my buddies had cross overs in our taste. Failing that, even though the 'discussions' were often volatile, we mostly agreed to disagree. There was so much music to choose from back then and the very best was never an easy task to distill. signed: the dolphins off the starboard bow.
I recall that Houses of the Holy was generally viewed as a disappointment by fans and critics alike in the wake of Led Zep IV. I mean, not everyone disliked it, of course. But, on the whole, it was viewed rather negatively. As time has passed it has grown in stature.
Great response because I agree with 100% of it. You made excellent points, superbly describing the music and theme. It's the only Zep album I own, stupidly, but that will change. Great work! Not listen to Jeck Beck and Rod Stewart on "People Get Ready," from JB's "Flash" album, insanely good! But you probably can't play the official video. Peace
You were close...they performed together until Bonzo passed...12 years. Had a few special engagements after that, but never performed as a band after his passing because their hearts just werent into replacing John. Great reaction, ty. Oh, P.S. Guess the blue print porn links have reached your channel as well. 🤦♀️👇 lol!
My impression is Rolling Stone and other critics kinda held a grudge because Zep didn't give interviews. I'd like to recommend RP's "I Believe" and "29 Palms"
Bro, l am sure you get these recommendations for Zep songs all the time. When you said hidden gems, you really coined the term. This is why l am hoping you do a reaction of one of my greatest songs of all time. This song l am recommending is actually the last song where all 4 band mates worked in studio. "I'm gonna crawl" That song actually proves to me that SOUL can be rendered in a rock and roll Zeppelin song. Sadly it was the last song they played together in studio. Bro, if you already did a reaction to this song, please disregard this song.
@@SoulTrainBro Thank you so much for your reaction to that Zep song I'm gonna crawl. It took awhile to find it on Vimeo but while looking for it l got sidetracked on a bunch of other reactions you did including the Lemon Song. That took me on a Howlin Wolf excursion starting with "Killing floor." Pretty damn cool😎 it was.
This man has reacted to every LZ song from every album, plus a ton of rarities, live performances, the entire TSRST album, and god only knows what else. You should check out his Patreon page!
Hey SSB, Great content as always! Would you mind considering reacting to Highway Tune by Greta van Fleet? Cant find them on your channel. I think you would enjoy that song a lot!

This is my favorite zepplein song. Which is saying something, since I love them all. Love the changes.

@@chrisbowling4060 Yes Sir, exactly!!
This song is a good example of what Jimmy Page means when he says "whisper to the thunder".
And "Light and Shade"
Over the Hills is absolutely one of my fav's. So glad you totally dug it!! Lyrics remind me, real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance

I remembervery well!
Of course we can! 🙂
I could totally hang with you and talk music for hours man! You completely GET it!
I love these reposts! Takes me back to 2018!
Led Zeppelin in concert and beyond!! was as true then as it is now.
Their best song.
"Did you hear those drums?"
😉
The offer still stands of me supplying you with the UNEDITED 1969 BBC London Playhouse Theater Rock Hour show. 😉😉😉
Light and shade is what Jimmy called it.
Good luck, Wayne! I will miss the spirit of YOUR delivery.
Thank you kindly

My favorite zep song usually is the last one I heard
You need to review "Travelling Riverside Blues"
Such a great song....as someone close to me said "hard to wrap my mind around Jimmy Page"....Ditto...

Other Zeppelin lyrics have clear influences from The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings; not so sure about this one, despite what the article says.
