I honestly do not know why this is not at Stairway fame. My theory is it does not conform to the gatekeepers’ prejudice towards Led Zeppelin. A love song? A guitar laden symphonic love song? Don’t really care, it’s my favorite song It’s appropriate for all seasons of my life. I appreciate it more as I get older

Most likely because back in the day, popular songs were singles driven and Zep wasn't a band that lived on singles. You have nine great albums with one MAYBE two songs off each album being pushed by radio so thats about 15 songs picked for the airwaves. For a double album, this song slipped under the radar. Pick a song for radio from the album: Kashmir? In the Light? The Rover? We could go all day! But this tune lays bare the genius of Jimmy - the layered guitars and simple riffs are out of this world but the engineering is the masterpiece here. How he manipulated sounds. Nobody better.

Jimmy Page and the band had this incredible gift of creating a mood and vibe in all of the tracks that just take you away. It’s like they created an alternate world to escape to, with all the vibe and symphonic depth and mythology. That’s why people from 15-80 wear Zep T-Shirts to this day

Not many "heavy" bands produce emotional classics like this....one of the things that separate Zep from other great bands.

Thank you for your reposts. Yes some zeppelin fans can be extremely fanatical. I remember that September day in 1980 that forever changed the history of Rock music.
Led Zeppelin had been my favorite band I first herd Zep at 10 yrs old in 1972.my sisters played their records.I would sit outside her door and listen. At 11 years old I got a record player and my first Led Zeppelin record for my birthday.it was my only record and I played it over and over again. I saved up my money and bought the second album.I was now a fan with Zeppelin posters as wall paper .Back then we all looked up to them as Gods, or Super heroes. In 1977 I was 15 years old .my sisters went to a sold out concert. I wanted to go so bad but my parents said I was to young. When TSRTS came to movie theaters. I won a pair of VIP tickets from a radio station. It would be the premier showing in SD. It was like a concert crowd.I was determined that I would see them. I remembered how my sisters waited in line the day tickets went on sale in 1977 they were lucky, because later that day it was announced the show was sold out. So when the 1980 tour dates were released in February I reserved front row tickets from Trip Tickets (a ticket agency) paid $100. The show was going to be in October I couldn’t wait. Music was so much a part of my life and Led Zeppelin was the best. September 5 1980 I turned 18 years old. I had every Zep record and every poster I can find. Only one more month to wait until I could see my favorite band. Then that black day September 25 when the world learned that we lost Bonzo. The sadness, the anger, the depression that every Zep fan had. It was like we all lost a brother. We all were bitter when hearing he choked on his own vomit. Why why why??? He was so young and superhuman to all of us. Shortly after Jimmy made the announcement. That the band would not continue. There was so much more music that now would never be produced by Zep . Every fan was hurt every fan lost part of their heart, my honest feeling that die hard fans like myself. Would hold on tightly to the band that was the greatest band. John Bonham was alive every time you played a record. Every time you herd a song on the radio. No other band would ever earn the right to be better than Zep. Fans like myself who just missed the opportunity to experience live shows. Never got over the loss of Bonzo. He couldn’t be replaced so how on earth could we replace his legacy? You couldn’t so therefore Led Zeppelin lives in our souls now and forever as the greatest band there ever was or will be. We loved them. Sorry for the long post but I just felt the need to share my experience and my beliefs on the reason Zeppelin fans are so die hard. We are music lovers. Growing up music was everything. Zep, Floyd, Sabbath, Stones,Beatles,Rush, Rainbow,Purple, Priest, Scorpions, Metallica, MSG, Dio, Ozzy, Guns ñ Roses, I can go on and on. They are all great bands all have a place in our hearts. Difference is Zeppelin was there first and just like your firs love will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. From inside the mind of a ZepHead.

The solo in this song makes me think of Destiny, Fate, the Universe, the Past, the Future, etc.....I don’t even know how to really properly convey it. It just makes you think of the grandness of everything. IMO, the finest guitar solo I’ve ever heard, because it taps into inner emotion as well, or as better as anything else I’ve ever heard. This solo is an example of why Eddie Van Halen, despite all of his talent and technical ability, can never be BETTER than Page. Jimmy had this ability to tap into another universe unlike anyone else I’ve heard.

Wayne, bro, you ask why Ten Years Gone never achieved the same level of commercial recognition as, say, Stairway to Heaven or Rock and Roll. I can remember when the double-album Physical Graffiti was released. Ten Years was seen by the vast majority of fans as just another track on a great sprawling album of 15 songs. I mean, we liked it, but not necessarily as a clear stand-out track on the album. I think that the subtleties of the song got a bit over-shadowed by other big and instantly recognisable songs such as Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot and In My Time of Dying. It certainly never got any airplay on UK radio, but it was always rare in any case to hear any Led Zep on UK radio. Appreciation of Ten Years Gone gained over the decades as the subtleties of the song and the beautiful guitar work became clearer. For me, it is one of their best. Peace.

@@zepdawg1234 Cheers, Dave. I appreciate your taking the time to comment.
Yes, two great songs right there. I think I would go along with you. Asked me 10 years ago I would've said SIBLY was the better.
I'm trying to think what links them as I replay them in my head. Perhaps the range of dynamics within each song, though contrasting. Highs and lows. Ups and downs. Loud and soft. Each song ebbing and flowing within itself. Astonishing musicianship, of course. Two of Jimmy's most amazing solos. TYG the more yearning and nostalgic, subdued and understated. My favourite of all Jimmy's solos, I think. There's a haunting beauty to it. I love, too, Robert's restrained vocal in this song - just striking the right depth of feeling. SIBLY is perhaps more fiery, more urgent and visceral. Anyway, just a few thoughts. By the way, I still have an edition of Mojo magazine from 2014 that ranked the top 50 Zep songs as voted by the readers. TYG came in at #16, and SIBLY at #6. If there was a poll of Zep fans tomorrow, I think that SIBLY would stay pretty much at 5 or 6, but TYG would go up to maybe 7 or 8 as it has only continued to gain in reputation over the decades. Best regards

I will fly against the face of popularity and say that I think this is Led Zeppelin's best song. It maybe because I'm tired of all the usual suspects, but this song has it all. Great intro that moves into the multi-tracked main riff, into a melodic great guitar solo, into a slamming, killer bridge and then back to the original with MANY overdubbed guitars to make it sound like 'Jimmy's guitar orchestra.' Phenomenal song.

I know the story behind this song, because it's one of my favorites and I have read up on it. Robert Plant's first great love was a woman named Shirley Wilson. He was trying to get his career off the ground. She didn't want to be married to a "rock star" and all that comes with it. She just wanted the man himself. She gave him an ultimatim. "It's either the music or me". He chose the music, because he knew it was his passion in life and he had to keep going with it. This caused their relationship to disintegrate and they went their separate ways. Nevertheless it caused him great pain and anguish that lasted for years. He ran into her ten years later and she was married to another man. Hence the title "ten years gone". Yes, it's a song about reflection and lost love.

Wheras many songs have to compete with each other, it was led zeppelin albums competing against other led zeppelin albums. Most bands then were struggling to just make a hit song among a lot of filler on the album's they were on.

When Robert Plant said 'there's a gamble for you', I think he's highlighting that he was gambling that his future career would make it worth the sacrifice of his relationship with his then girlfriend. I've never heard 'there's a gamble for you' used to mean there's something to think about'.

Hey, Hey, It's the Soul Train Bro... Ya Know?! I'd like to Thank You for this wonderful Channel. I've enjoyed my every visit. For some, as yet unknown reason, I felt compelled to respond to your very thoughtful breakdown of "Ten Years Gone." I have always appreciated this song, more than most of their other music. For me, I believe that this song's "purpose," or reason for "Being," is quite different from most of their other works and I believe this is one, of the many reasons that stands out so prominently, from most of the other works. I believe, as you do, that this was Written, Composed and Performed, with a higher purpose in mind. I also think that today's Music industry is to blame for most people developing the "Short Attention Span" that is so very pervasive in today's society. Songs today are, on average, between 2 to 3 minutes, right? Yea, well "Patience" is a lost virtue today. When I observe people "Reacting" to Pink Floyd, (in example), I can see so many become almost irritated at the length of the "Intros" into the songs. I can hear them thinking "Next!" Sad, but true. I apologize for making you suffer through this Book that I've written. I just have so much more I'd like to say, after hearing your thoughts regarding "Ten Years Gone," as they so closely parallel mine?! Regardless, I think that I'll wrap it up here, for now. Thank You, for all that you do, for so many of us. Relax, Live Easy AND Keep Smiling...

A great question about why this song is not more prominent in the LZ catalogue. I think one reason may be that it got lost in the greatness of Physical Graffitti. Maybe if it was a track on a single versus a double album it would have stood out more. Just a theory.

the answer is because there is so much that is great from led zep but also there was so much being released and created in those years for example there are about 8 stones albums where every song is classic and did not get airplay only one or 2 hits per albums full of greatness exile on main st is a double album and there is not one bad song so many many great pieces....you reaction people have a long way to go when it comes to some of the true 1st tiers like beatles stones greatful dead j tull the who etc...

These are Robert Plant's lyrics. I read somewhere that the lyrics refer to the sister of his then wife whom he dated first. She was the one who made him choose between her and his music. If that's so, he did reconnect with her later on after his divorce and had a son by her, Jesse born 1991 but it didn't work out ultimately.

I believe it was Robert Plant, he was a poor Kid and a Laborer Paving Roads, supposedly it was His Girl that told him to not pursue a Singing Career.

Reminds me of spy movie music, somehow, that one riff....

It's a ballad, not considered macho for zeppelin back in the days I guess, Imho. One of my favorite page solos.

To answer your question...yes, Jones is playing bass pedals in addition to acoustic guitar.

John Bonham is as great as Jimmy, JPJ, and Robert.

I believe that this song was published after Robert's son died and he & his wife divorced.?

      How?

    • @rickdmon1dancing769

Because the “Average Listener” is not able to break down how JPJ and especially JB carry’s and sets the stage for Plant & Page.
You always do a Gr8 job of explaining that, which is why I enjoy your videos, but I think LZ is a band that will only be appreciated by a certain ear. By-the-way, “Ten Years Gone” along with Aretha Franklin’s version of “Call Me” are the 2 songs that stops me in my tracks and makes me listen when I hear the first note.

    Why Ten years gone is
not regarded like stairway is probably because stairway came before it. Simply could not displace that song from the top perch. And when physical graffiti came out ppl were still getting led zeppelin 4 so it simply had too many good led zeppelin songs to compete with. Also, Houses of the Holy had come out before and again, too many good zeppelin songs competing with each other.

You might already know that these guys in Led Zeppelin were heavily influenced by the Delta Mississippi blues. Many of their songs are amplified blues songs from African American blues artists. One can't respect and honor Led Zeppelin without honoring the great African American blues artists that inspired them.
