STB - There are Zep songs where the raw energy is just incredible. In the Song Remains the same, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Song Remains the Same blast out with so much power and energy. I was just listening to it very loud in my car. Wow! To me, the live version ofIn My Time of Dying is unequaled . At the beginning of COVID, I went on walks and nearly every time I finished with In My Time of Dying, and I’d slip out of my house to have a listen on our brick steps.
As regards to live or studio?? Well I was 10 years old I’m 1972 when I first herd my sisters listening to Led Zeppelin 1 ,over and over. So growing up when studio versions were all you got. Up until the release of TSRTS and a rare bootleg live from the bbc. After my first listen to the live version of my favorite songs. I loved the longer versions. Then hearing a then rare bbc recorded live concert. Hearing new different versions I then realized that Zeppelins live shows were never the same . Each taking on different variations. Now with you tube there are so many bootlegs available so for me the bootlegs are like reliving the past and hearing songs again for the first time. So I am drawn to all the bootlegs. And for me nothing is better than live
Watching Led Zeppelin live is exhilarating and illustrates first hand how amazing of a band they were. Paige is not only a guitar master but a true showman. John Bonham and John Paul Jones put the spine into the performance and Plant just belts out tremendously awesome vocals
I like Led Zeppelin anyway they come. I love live because its something rare and its cool to see how they do it. Also live is great especially with Zeppelin because of improvs and jams.
These were great videos, not sure if I’ve seen them before but the camera work is really good in showing the band in all their glory. Thanks for posting and thanks to your viewer that sent you the links.
First i was impressed their vinyls, then i found their the song remains the same, i were only listening that, now .. after 30 years, i like to hear both, studio's are live too.. "like stairway to heaven solo in 1st take" that i heard, and so on.. i love to listen those TALENTS what they got and has!
I always love live versions because of how different the songs are... the whole guitar intro/verse line is completely different from studio on Over the Hills yet is just as cool and makes sense to play it live that way with one guitar. Overall, I prefer to listen to live versions because they’re more fun to play along with, however, some songs are better in studio from the recordings we have to compare to
To answer the question of those songs not being included, they’re on the 2003 DVD. It’s got footage of TSRS missing tracks , Earls Court 75 , Knebworth 79 & Royal Albert Hall 70. And yes I’m working on getting “all that shit!” 😂 Cheers!
All depends on the end result as to which I prefer, I play it strictly by ear, I do however always enjoy watching the visual performance regardless of any other factors involved.
Re LZ, I like some of the live songs better and some of the studio versions better, but I'm glad we have both. Some bands live try to replicate the studio sound (I've heard Rush mentioned as one of those) and some don't try to be exactly the same but to experiment and improvise and add guitar solos (like Led Zeppelin)
I'm in the Zep camp every which way. And every time Bonham just knocks my socks off. Most of that great live footage didn't come until much later. And no other band has ever served up the songs different every time like they did. Even to the point of not telling each other where they were going just to keep themselves interested & on their toes.....like the great jazz masters of the past.
No but who wouldn't like to buy each re-release as they came out. Let the 100 only white vinyl go, no money when you need it as usual.. The big 2018 TSRTS release with bluray special stereo and 5.1 surround mix etc box set cost a fortune, well it would be worth it I admit, but way beyond my pensioner income pay grade. Like when I was at school the $5 for an LP was a hell of a lot of money but somehow managed to get all the albums on release up to CODA including TSRTS vinyl on release. Seems what goes around comes around albeit 50 years later. 😎😆🇭🇲
It depends on the concerts, as some Zepp live is better than others. But I like TSRTS over the studio versions. And some of their other earlier live stuff. Earls Court, too.
It's a mix for me. Dazed and confused is most definitely better on Song Remains the Same, but a song like Achilles Last Stand I have never heard a live version even come close to what was mastered in the studio. It's all good!
I like them both either way like the Rover studio but I agree with you the song remains the same and celebration day I’ll like that live.. Led Zeppelin the best band in rock ‘n’ roll.. anything else is generic
Knowing that JP has utilized new tech and repackaging formats I personally do not care to enrich their bank accounts by having to have everything that LZ puts out...those people have too much money and time..I am a huge LZ fan btw
Needless to say, Grateful Dead’s live stuff is much better than studio, except for the beauty of albums Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the song Unbroken Chain.
I saw them in 1977 at the Pontiac Silverdome. Attendance was open seating of 76 thousand crazy fans. Rick Lake of ELP said if you remember it you weren't there. I remember walking and finding myself in the middle of the 40 yard line. Rick Lake was right. The rest is a mystery. I recently watched a bootleg of that concert. I'm pretty sure I had a great time!
Don't worry. I was just calling Perla Batalla, Bella, on some comments earlier today. She was one of a duo of Leonard Cohen's backup singers for several years.
Way, way, way to much Zeppelin STB !! We need more Prog .... Classic Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant Live, ELP, Nektar, Jethro Tull etc ! Please : D
Unfortunately, Zep live was not always top notch, for the band was often sloppy due to alcohol and drug abuse. That being said, TSRTS live is great. It's the best of the best live. Earl's Court is good too. But the studio albums are usually where I go for Zep.
some live versions, some studio, it depends on the song. But mostly studio tracks i.e. the song Kashmir *must* be the original studio version *ONLY* (or the re-mastered studio track). I absolutely *will not* listen to the live version of that song, period..
I'm in the camp of liking whatever Zeppelin song is playing.
Live, or studio,, it's all captured works of musical genius, that we, and future generations, have the privilege of enjoying.
Never could figure out why this stuff was cut out of the movie. Along with Black Dog, MMH and The Ocean. It’s all gold!
You'd think they could extend the movie if there wasn't room for them.

What a treat to come home and finding another Led Zeppelin reaction from you! Good times!

What a great guitarist Jimmy is! He was high as a kite and still killed it! What performers they were!!!
In a league all his own. Possessed.

Great vid and comment on MSG 73 , thanks STB

Thank you! Will do!
For Your life...studio version

95 percent studio for me .

By the way.. love your zero tolerance policy!

speaking of Celebration Day...when are you checking out that concert....I remember you said you would be into it around Christmas...
Idk why Jimmy changed the audio for the 2007 remaster... the original 1976 release has the better version of Celebration Day.
It's a mix for me. Dazed and confused is most definitely better on Song Remains the Same, but a song like Achilles Last Stand I have never heard a live version even come close to what was mastered in the studio. It's all good!

Pink Floyd sounds good both ways, but after seeing them live twice in Kansas City the sound and visuals are almost too much to take in at once.
I'd put The Who consistently better live than in the studio.
I agree with you. I think The Who’s studio production could’ve been more powerful. Didn’t hurt having Jimmy Page as Zep’s producer!
