Richard is the kind of guy you simply can't get enough of. I hope for a third interview, or better yet - a dozen of these. Obviously, the man has a million stories to share, that one about Billy Joel was so interesting and impressive. His past solo work surely also deserves a discussion.
Richard Bennett was working at Al Casey’s music store with Mort Marker in August 1967, when Maxine Casey took the famous Bartell Fretless prototype to George Harrison on Blue Jay Way. The Beatles called it the ‘secret, mad’ guitar. It is the rarest of Beatles guitars. Richard was extremely supportive as I researched the story of ‘Finding Fretless’, we corresponded regularly and spoke a number of times. What an incredible career he has had. I first meet Richard in the 90s, chatting to him backstage after a Mark Knopfler gig in Brighton. It looks like Richard is playing a Hot Rod Red Fender Knopfler signature model. Mark signed mine, which is currently on loan to British session player Ray Russell who ended up with the Bartell Fretless that Richard first saw in 67, George Harrison gave it to him in 1985, how’s that for a connected story!?
can't wait to hear this one. am i correct and is this the 2nd time you've interviewed him or was it someone else from the Knopfler spectrum that i am mixing him up with?
Been a big fan of Richard's since forever... but nearly 5 hours...?? I just haven't got that time. Pity you couldn't edit it down to a series of +-10-15 minutes clips. Sorry. 🤷♂
