  • In a recent viral post, the community has reacted to a college in the US where a teacher banned the 18-55mm kit lens from their course. A snippet with the proof of this has been shown around and is included within this video. So there is a lot to discuss here within this topic. Are kit lenses really that bad? Do kit lenses belong in college courses? With a lot to cover, I go into detail from my personal college experience, my education and access to gear. Being a huge topic right now, what do you think about this? Should colleges ban kit lenses? Let me know in the comments below.

    If a teacher can not teach someone the art of photography independent of equipment, this is a true indication of the terrible teacher.

    lol, My wife shoots weddings with a 18-55mm kit and they are generally the photos that the couples wanted multiple prints and as large prints too. Much more important than what lens or camera is knowing your gear.

    One of the most important lessons in any discipline is learning to work around the limitations of the equipment. Sure an 18 to 55mm kit lense may be crappy (which is debatable - the 15 to 45 that came with my fuji rocked) but a good photographer will be able to take a good photo with it regardless. They may have to adapt their approach to compensate for the "lower quality" of the kit lense but in the end it boils down to the photographer's skill and not their equipment.

    I teach digital and darkroom photography at the college level. I require a 50mm prime lens for my darkroom class, as those are not difficult to afford, and are typically more common than zooms on film cameras. While I strongly encourage my digital students to buy a standard prime lens (35 or 50 based on sensor format), I don't require it, as some brands don't have a good cheap standard prime option.

      see but that's the difference right, you REALLY suggest the 50mm just bc of its versatility right, especially in film. But you arent broadly banning or talking down on things. You sound like you're an educator who deserves to teach lol

      50mm was the kit lens for 35mm SLRs.

      @@DonaldWMeyers-dwm Yep, unfortunately some kids still show up with terrible 3rd party zooms attached to their cameras, lol.

    That sounds like a really stupid policy. I tend to stress not what you have but how to get the most out of the gear you’re using.

    Oh my goodness. I showed a professional photographer 3 photos I took with a kit lens. Her response, “Sweet. These need to be in a magazine. “ I just laughed and said thank you. Now I wished I would of told her I took these with my kit lense.

    I kind of see what the teacher is getting at but it really just seems like bad news for students and the teacher comes off looking kind of lazy in just banning kit lenses rather than instructing students the shortfalls of kit lenses. Its a really good teachable moment that those students will never get. Also any cage that is only open for two hours is not even a good one at all. That needs to be open all the time for students or just don't even have one. It just seems really lazy the whole way around.

      lazy is the perfect word to use actually!

    Kit lenses have come a long, LONG way in the last 10ish years. These aren't the junky lenses from 20 years ago.
    This is a failure on the teacher's part - what lens is on the camera doesn't change the basics, it all still applies. A good teacher would allow the lenses and demonstrate the difference from kit to "pro."

    • @Eric_Rossi

      oh for sure theyve developed and become really solid for the most part. Like I said, thats a super teachable moment just missed out on

    Nothing wrong with starting with a kit lens ,especially for college students .It will force you to learn the aperture better with the variable aperture on kit lens .

  • @miamidolphinsfan
    @miamidolphinsfan 2 года назад +3

    This is a silly rule. Is the college going to help the students pay for the better lenses ? This seems to be an elitest economic warfare on poorer students

      The school would justify that by saying we have the "cage" but yeah lol

    Kit lenses rock! Banning kit lenses is the dumbest thing I ever heard. I use kit lenses for personal and paid jobs all the time. I have no idea what credentials this professor has, but not seeing the educational value in using a kit lens is unforgivable. Why not just ban crop sensor cameras while they're at it?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  2 года назад +1

      lol or just make the student have to have gear valued over 2K just to take the class

  • @nerwin

    I used kit lenses for a long time, nothing wrong with them. He said 18-55....does that not include Fujifilm's excellent 18-55 2.8-f/4 or their 15-45 or 16-50 which are all decent kit lenses for the money. I agree that the Nikon 18-55 I used was crappy, terrible quality but I still learned the basics of photography on them. Maybe this teacher really likes bokeh 😂

      lol hey students, only use 1.2 lenses only or else instant fail

    I can see both sides; one of the best exercises I ever did was spend 30 days shooting ONLY with a 50mm lens. But saying to never shoot with a “cheap” lens because it’s no good is crazy. It would be a better lesson to learn how to create good images with crappy gear!

      oh yeah, its def a missed teaching moment with just a broad sweep of a brush to just say no. I just know for sure, I wouldnt attend that class lol

    if you decide to pay or to take on a loan for college you should be able to use whatever you like, just maybe have some recommendations

    Students should go to another class, at another college. It sounds like a bad teacher. I prefer primers for most of my stills, but still I use a kit lens for most of my video work. It’s the best kit I’ve got for the job.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  2 года назад

      I just think the teacher couldve used it as a great educational moment, right, theres so many things to explore. Primes vs variable lenses. Low light, lens compression etc.

    Well, no pearls of wisdom to impart, however, I read that article a few weeks back, I went into 🤣 ‘mode’. I am not going to rant on the quality of “higher” education nowadays, that's for another channel. Like you, I attended a University with a great photo dept (1980s) with an equally great “cage”. Access to top-notch gear was easily accessible, however, we were encouraged to use what we actually owned and not become dependant on the mega FD or Nikkor glass as in the real working world, that type of gear would likely be out of reach upon graduation and entering the job market unless you were fortunate enough to land a job at a paper/ wire service or another photographic venue where top quality gear was readily available. Making a decent living in this field was always difficult and becoming more so nowadays, this educator putting pressure on those students to purchase high dollar gear is teaching the wrong lesson. BTW, I shoot with Fuji gear, and the 18-55 is my “go-to” lens for quick down-n-dirty shooting when a lens with a moderate reach is needed, love that lens.

      yeah 100%, I think pressure is a good word for the situation. It's unnecessary pressure

    If an instructor wants to ban a kit lens to focus on prime lengths…fine. But to ban it due to low quality? Need a new instructor.

      it couldve been a teachable moment for sure, def a diff way to go about the topic but yeah I feel the same, the teacher needs to re think the approach imo
