I like the idea of a key for your camera, all cameras these days have some kind of Bluetooth system and that could easily be used with a bracelet or even your phone to give access to the camera without all the password or finger print stuff cause it takes time to dial a password or the camera to process a finger print (more hardware) and some of us want an instant reaction of the camera to start shooting. So something like a Bluetooth bracelet that gives access to your camera at a certain distance from the body, if the camera gets out of that range then it's useless until it gets back on the range. Easy system that can get implemented on any camera with Bluetooth and a firmware update.

ohh I like the phone idea with NFT tech. We normally have our phones either in our pockets or our bags, so that could be an option as well!

@@Eric_Rossi yea but thinking on the situation of a robbery it's very likely that they take your phone, camera and bag so something that stays out of sight but still on you all the time would be a better option (bracelet or device on your keys or necklace)

Thanks for covering this immensely important topic, Eric! Let’s turn up the heat on the manufacturers together. 💪

I dont think anything will be done in a few years, sadly, but Sony or Fuji is pretty "quick" to jump onto something but I guess we will just see. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Honestly I'm hoping someone steals my ancient, half-broken gear so I can have the excuse to buy something new, lol.

The point about manufacturers making it possible (and in fact encouraging!) to register your gear for warranty, but at the same time not having a simple process to verify serial numbers against theft reports is ridiculous, but it makes (cynical) sense for the manufacturers to not provide a service that would also facilitate the second-hand market for their gear. Which in turn speaks volumes about how massively overpriced new gear really is across the board.

Lenstag lets you upload your gear info and search online for it being used.
We can put passcodes and such on cameras, but I'm not sure what could be done for lenses in that regard. Lens linked to camera? Would need a way to undo that if you sell it...
I think the easiest option for cameras that could be put in to many mode modern cameras is a passcode, or a link to your phone to unlock it - pretty sure all major camera brands have some kind of phone-camera software. Down the road a fingerprint sensor might work, I'd prefer a combo like in most phones - fingerprint for quick access or passcode if someone I trust wants access.

    I agree on principal but...
if you get mugged at gunpoint the mugger can force you to open the phone with the code or camera.
regarding database it will make it harder to sell second hand cause the hardware will have to go through proof of sale hassle.
to me the wiser way is to encrypt the pictures and only the code the camera owner has at home unlocks them for editing/copying. that way stealing the camera becomes useless cause you can't use its pictures. anything that you know or have on you can be forced out of you. if the unlock code is in New York and you get mugged at south America or another state the thief can't do shit with the gear.

99 per cent of stealing is someone snatching your stuff and running away
