I can relate to how you felt when you described the sequel as a good JRPG that you weren’t satisfied with. For instance, I always think back to Tales of Vesperia when I think about that type of game. The combat for TOV was definitely cool and different from what I experienced before, but I was not gripped by the story from beginning to end. The characters were meh. The main villain kept changing, and I would always take long breaks from that RPG. Anyways, I thought Neo was a fun experience. My whole experience with it was fine except for the Rewind moments.
Your comment about Rindo's powers being a contradiction of the lessons he's supposed to learn throughout the game I feel kind of misses the point about why it makes sense thematically that he has time travel powers. Rindo being the time traveler of the group is a purposeful decision by the writers of the game and makes plenty of sense once you think about his conflict as a character. People keep reducing Rindo's character flaw as: "He struggles to make decisions," but there's a bit more beyond that. Not only does the boy not want to make decisions, he'd rather not think for himself or be responsible for his own thoughts or feelings. He'll either latch on to the ideas of others or piggyback off of anyone else he found to be "more capable" than him. So how do you challenge a person like that in this kind of narrative? Give them time travel powers. What better way to challenge a boy with indecision issues than to make him the ONE person in the group with all the information whose decisions will alter their fate. You're thinking about this all backwards: the time travel powers don't allow for Rindo to continue being indecisive: In any media that has a protagonist use time travel, when have you ever seen it be a walk in the park for them? The catch 22 most of the time in those stories is that the weight of time-traveling eventually takes its toll on you, forcing you to have to make decisions to reach the best possible outcome with no do-overs. Time travel over time makes you more accountable for the decisions you're making because you're changing the fate of so many people, fates that if it were an unfortunate one, would constantly weigh on your conscience until you could. *SPOILERS IN-BOUND* Your comment makes it sound like Rindo could just keep time traveling to fix things, but the story establishes with no ambiguity whatsoever than Rindo can't just keep doing that to undo the choices he makes. Once he decides to change fate, that's it; he's done for the day. Initially, Rindo feels a sense of relief with knowing he can travel through time, and why wouldn't he? For someone who doesn't like the burden of making decisions, this is pretty convenient for him. But all too soon does he start to realize through the visions he gets, his role as team leader, and the powers that he has, that his decisions are the ones that matter the most to the team's survival, forcing him into the role of having to take more responsibility than he'd ever want. We can see through the game how some of his indecision leads to him needing to time travel, how that comes back to bite him in the ass near the climax, and how the narrative goes about making him confront those mistakes through the boss itself. I mean, that sounds like a pretty well-thought out narrative device to develop a character rather than a contradiction. It's a purposeful narrative tool used to deconstruct Rindo's complacency, pick at the flaws of such a trait, and shine light on what he needs to do to overcome it. The story elements in Neo are laid out pretty well and succinctly for the most part, the time travel being the one of the most integral and sensible part of the story's narrative. Shame you also didn't talk much about Shoka, who's essentially this game's deuteragonist and how her character arc runs in contrast yet parallel to Rindo's. There are a lot of storytelling elements that players seemed to have missed and I'm always surprised when I encounter a viewpoint that demonstrates this as the case. While I agree with the story's pacing is a bit shoddy, I disagree that the characters are lackluster. Let's be fair, it's not like every character in Twewy had the intense, psychological deep dive that Neku (and to a lesser extent but still significant enough, Shiki) had. Our lovable Beat doesn't get the bulk of his character development until week 3, Rhyme barely has any, and while Joshua's character traits are a blast to watch, he's mostly enigmatic throughout the game and mostly serves to challenge Neku.
Thank you. I was scared people were gonna be mad cause I'm not in love with it. It's odd I heard nothing but praises for a while and while I was playing I'm like huh? ... Are we playing the same game or are we just ignoring the terrible pacing?
I think the battle system was really solid, and I can understand that stance. That said, idk there is something about the original I just can't do away with. For what it's worth I certainly didn't like the original right away but as you get used to it it's just stupid fun.
Just found this channel! I was looking for a good review of the game as I liked the combat, music, and aesthetic in the demo but was feeling like it was still missing…something. Your review was excellent and kind of confirmed my biggest hesitation on buying it. I still intend to get it, but feel better waiting on a decent sale with the story as it is. But anyways, then I open your channel and see a bunch of videos on tons of awesome games! You got yourself a new subscriber eager to binge your content! Keep up the awesome work!
I had a very similar experience. The game wasn't bad and I do want to recommend it for the fun combat & nice call backs to the original but story and characters fell short for me and made it a little less exciting to go through/finish.
I've not played it. Trying to decide if I will. Based on your comment I'm just curious do you like anime and the original and felt the story fell short or do you not like anime and it just felt too anime? Did you watch the anime based off it and if you do like anime was it any good?
For me I think the highlights regarding characters were Beat and Shoka I also think it doesn't help that secret reports reveal info that should be in the main story especially for Tsugumi, Rindo, Hazuki Regardless I enjoyed the game and hopefully a new setting takes place for possible future TWEWY games (especially with how Uzuki explained the game locations)
Yeah, the pacing of this game is sluggish. The turf wars slow it down, and the lack of urgency for the first half of the game really hampers the progression. The last half of the game has me hooked, but it just took so long to get there!
Oh totally, the later half of the game things were picking up but going through THREE turf wars, albeit the last one wasn't too terribly bad but still...
Hey Lady Pelvic! Just found your channel last week as I was searching for some Ys reviews. Next thing I know I'm binging your channel haha. It's been so much fun learning about so many games, old and new. I love when you talk about the game's ost and point out some of your favorite songs. I'm really enjoying the passion here :D Thank you for being awesome and keep on rocking!
Should prob follow up upon the full review. This was my first, I'm excited to play the og but those feelings you have seem pretty harsh to me. The padding is rough but I kinda figured it was budget related. The characters and story were so endearing to me. Really wanna check the first one but I think that title bogs the og fans out on this one too much.
I can't believe i only found your channel now with all your years of video making, even more when you talked about games i like or had interest of looking for a review. Great review by the way, all the points flow one to another as your analyze all the facets important to the game, the size is just right to watch after a long time focusing on something and you need to get back just after, what in my view, is something being lost in a lot of reviewers that talk taking circles in some aspects, got a new sub.
The style, presentation, and gameplay here are so damn good that I'm having just as much fun working on the 100% as I did with the OG, but honestly I'm glad I'm not the onlyone that felt underwhelmed by the plot. Baby spoilers but it had it's hype moments and everything, but almost all the character archs fell flat in the end. The biggest offender was Rindo in how I didn't really feel him learn his life lesson. The game just barely touches on his issues outside of a few lines on the side and suddenly during the final boss we get an out of nowhere line basically saying "wow Rindo you sure have overcome your character flaw!" It could just be a problem with him following up Neku's god-tier character journey but I just felt that he had a flat arch that ended with the game telling us he experienced development. Fret basically had the most engaging and relatable arch but I just felt that once his story was getting good and was really starting to go somewhere, it just abruptly stopped. Nagi was easily my favorite character but I just felt the game really didn't do much with her. Like it seemed like they were gearing up to say something about escapism and losing yourself in fiction towards the end there but did nothing with it.
the original TWEWY is one of my favorite games, and I really love NEO, it's been total joy for me! I'm sorry it didn't resonate with you as much. I think for me, things like the rewinds and turf wars didn't bother me as much, but I'm also the type who doesn't get disengaged by minor repetition, either. Either way, NEO has been an absolute treat for me, and one of my favorite games this year
I feel like I'm one of the few people has the opposite feeling about this series. I enjoyed the first game (played final remix on switch, not the original ds version), but I feel like it didn't live up to all of the praise I've seen for it over the years. On the other hand with Neo, while I haven't finished it yet, I haven't been able to put down. The visuals, music, and gameplay have all had huge improvements from the first in my opinion. I can't really comment much on the story though, since I'm only on the 3rd day of week two atm
I really enjoyed the Ps4 demo as this seems like a good game to just chill with rather than being taxing. Really good to hear your perspective seeing as I didn't play the first one. Think I'll get this when it's mot full price.
I'm going to be working on NEO next after I finish Great Ace Attorney. If anything, to answer your question about feeling underwhelmed with a good title, it's probably Great Ace Attorney. I like it, but it just doesn't have that impact that Phoenix Wright's titles did. Don't let my words sway your opinion. Give it a try and see if you like it. I'm almost done, so when I start NEO, I'll let you know what I thought. Awesome review as always, milady.
I think I agree with you 100%. I just got to the second points challenge. I said, nope, and took a break. Lol. The first TWEWY is definitely a much better experience than this one. I do like it, but not as much as the first.
Thank you for the tip to watch the switch version recap; TWEWY is one of my favorite games ever and I am enjoying Neo. Great review, I appreciate you describing the characters in detail, not a lot of reviewers do that.
Being a long-awaited sequel to what was basically a standalone title gave me a little apprehension, but I think it turned out pretty good. This is the kind of game that fans of the original are either gonna love, or totally hate based on how hyped up they let themselves get. Basically it's a good game, but the original DS title is a must play classic.
Duude, this is my first twewy and you just spoke my heart out: i felt weird because i was not really enjoying much and wanting to put the game down all the time, at the same time there was cool things that made me still ask myself “you should be liking this game, right?”. I took the decision to stop the game for a while, play another rpg idw, i want that cool feeling of being invested for real in a game
Totally understand how you feel on the game, time rewind and turf wars I just had to sigh whenever we had to do them. They can drag on a bit Character development doesn’t hit as strongly as the first game because you have to go a bit further to read between the lines. That being said, it is a lot more satisfying once you read the Secret Reports and look at the lyrics of the music, ‘specially for Rindo While there is not as much inspiration as the first game, it did kinda push me to make an important decision for my own circumstances instead of being on the fence about it Now while this game doesn’t leave as strong of an impression on me, it’s still plenty worth it as a newcomer or a fan of the original
Ooooo, top five art direction video would be sick. I’m a sucker for cell shaded games. Makes them timeless in IMO, just look at Wind Waker. I thought Gloria Estefan was playing in the background, then you brought up your fav track.
Some of the pacing of Neo was really rough, I have a hard time fully looking at it in comparison with the original, because a lot of my favourite parts are directly tied to its position as a direct sequel to the original game. Without getting into deep spoilers, I will say I do think Rewind being counter to the lesson Rindo needs to learn (this strengthened by the secret reports) but I don’t think that disconnect was explored as deeply as I’d have liked. I have not felt Life is Strange 2 nearly as much. Mechanically, graphically, it might in a lot of ways be stronger than the original, but each time I try to dive into LiS2 Episode one, I just kinda bounce off it. The protagonist isn’t as likeable as Max or Chloe to me, and, while it deals with heavy, real politics that are important and meaningful to talk about to me, I don’t think the opening earned its stakes. I hope I don’t feel the same way about True Colours. Oh, Jak 2 also, but that might just be I’m salty I’m bad at the game’s driving. Great review as always
For me this is one of the best games ever made, each character was perfect, the combat is some of my favorite, progression was fun (you didn't mention eating), music is one of the all time OSTs made even better, and we must have REALLY different values in storytelling as I could not stop playing cuz I needed to know what was going on. Oh man the returning characters too they handled it perfectly, also I had no crashes at all on switch so either I was lucky or you were unlucky.
Bird in the Hand was my favorite too! I thought it was funny the first game had Give Me All Your Love with the lyric "Touch me when you want me anytime." And then this game had "Never touch me again." 🤣
I wanted to finish the game before I watched this review, so here I am. Honestly, I loved the game as a whole. The Turf Wars weren't that bad at all in my eyes and the Rewinds were only meh at times. I feel like, without spoiling why, the consequences do become heavy over time when it came to Rindo's powers and such. I actually got upset and had to put down the game during certain twists, not because they were bad, but they hit me so hard because they were that effective. Honestly? 9/10, maybe even 10/10 game for me.
For sequels that left me feeling cold, Ni no Kuni II so far really got me feeling bah after really enjoying the first. I also definitely think there's quite a few Spyro and Crash games that were less fun than I anticipated, especially in the PS2 era.
I loved this game, just slightly less than the first. I give it an easy 9/10 IMO. Loved the stories and characters, and I actually loved how they talked like modern day slang, I would disagree that it feels forced because... that's how people talk and text. I found it so cool and helped the immersion. I agree with you, I did not like the time travel sequences for most of the game, but the last few were really cool to end the story. Also, playing the PS4 version on the PS5 was absolutely GORGEOUS, and it was a smooth 60fps, I honestly do not think it dipped below it even once during the most intense sequences. Definitely DEFINITELY play this version if you have the choice.
These days its hard for my to push through games that lose me even a bit. Once I go back I forget what was even going on and when I recap my investment is pretty much zilch. Happened with Tales of Versperia and Berseria(reached the end at least), I didn't think they were bad though. God now I remember I dropped Dragon Quest 11 too and that has a lot going for it. Its strange because I pushed through Suikoden 5 last year and loved that so maybe its not all just me changing. I think unless the main story grabs me and I care about the characters I cannot finish or recommend those games. Probably won't be able to do that again though, was a 10 day gaming binge 100+ hours on file.
I definitely feel that way about RPGs. Back in the day I devoured every release I could get my hands on. These days it takes a lot more to keep me interested than the standard RPG plots we see and I rarely play through them to completion anymore... Edit: Oh yeah, and Suikoden V is fire! Freaking love that game!
It was my first first TWEWY game, yes. I watched a let's play on the first game a year prior. Honestly, I do get the criticisms. The characters aren't as good. The first game always dropped new threats or something to develop characters, and the sequel crams it all into the 3rd week. That aside, the gameplay, visuals, and music are all awesome so there's that
Very similar experience. I'm 29 and the characters just.....eh. I really only liked Nagi and the man himself, Sho Minamimoto. I have yet to beat it because everytime I pick it up it feels more like a chore than fun. I LOVE the aesthetic and have since the first game but yea....no real stakes when you can rewind. Kinda reminds me of the Dragon Balls from DBZ. Who died? Who cares? Bring em back.
I adore this game. :) Best OST I've ever heard. People who've played Final Mix instead of DS may disagree. It's ironic that Lady Pelvic would connect so strongly to Nagi, given that she has incredible communication skills.
Well I believe we shouldn't hold things in comparison to their predecessors. NEO to me is a fun and worthy sequel in its own right and not as messy as KH3 in terms of plot
This game came when I needed it to lose myself in another world. Melbourne had just gone back into lockdown, work was stressful as all heck, I felt really isolated and this game felt like an antidote for all that. I had played the original but I did it when I was 22 and while I enjoyed it, I also wasn't like the biggest fan of it. I do think there's a lot less at stake at the start since it really doesn't feel like a death game until much later into it. The Scramble Slams are definitely awful (especially the 2nd one). That said, I actually really liked the characters, the interactions between them all, the blending of a new cast with a couple of surprises. Just seeing friends kind of hang out and have fun dialogue was way more enjoyable and kind of felt more engaging than having just Neku and partner. It does limit the stakes a lot, but that was more of what I wanted. The music is also top notch. In the end, while I think the original is more creative and utilised the DS so well, I actually prefer this game just because it smooths out some of the rough edges from the original.
I agree with you, this is a solid 8/10 game where the first TWEWY is a 10/10 and those 2 points are lost because the pacing isn't amazing at first and the end of the game has most of the story content but it's also very drab. Also the characters are not as good, save for 2 of them, but the soundtrack and fighting is still good and that's the core of the franchise. So I would say this is a good game and I played on PS5 and platinumed it last Thursday.
Kinda sad people didn't like it that much in general. I for one really liked it from start to end but would be lying if the time back sections where bruh at times and the pacing was really bad with the story being rushed as fuck in the final days I know it would be much to ask but the game would be better with a 4th week for really giving time to all the reapers and main cast to do their arcs or at least something instead the game needs to put like 9h just on the final day with everything being explained as fast as possible. But really besides that "it could be better" I like it, the gameplay is fun, the bosses all have an unique mechanic to work around, the art is great and so is the music, I would still recommend it to any twewy fan not in therms of YOU NEED TO PLAY IT, but it does enough to deserve a chance in my perspective. Now to spoilers of neo and og The story is... Something like the plot is good half of the cast is interesting and charismatic. But as said I felt most of it rushed like why you didn't do a mini arc or something for Minamimoto why Fret is the only secondary with real scenes, it would be easy to give an arc to Nagi by giving her problems to enter other people minds being a metaphor of understanding other people better and only being able to do it without problems by the last week we she needs to get past thar or smth like that it wouldt be that hard to give her an arc, and beat is there for surprise and lore dump of the first game only, like this was the perfect time to give him something more like thinking a little before acting because he could die again and there are people waiting for him idk And there are more cases like tsugumi which is explained in a 3 min scene and that's all she has even if the game was hyped because of her. Really some more scenes could really helped the plot, while the original wasn't a masterpiece at least by Desing by having 1 partner it gave time for everyone which makes it better overall, by neo having 6 party members it falls flat in some ways, not a bad story, but I can tell why someone would say it is bland and perfectly accept it Also I think you mis in te the idea of Rindo (is not like the game does a good explanation of it in any way is really subtle outside of hehe time travel bad kiddo) at the start of the game Rindo is literally unable to speak his opinion in fear of losing something like his friends for it, not that he is someone totally different behind it but time and time again he prefers others taking his responsability in things by taking decisions (another way or giving his mind in this context). He is unable to accept defeat because one of his decisions and keep moving foward like Neku says at the end he really should try to move foward. Someone is defeated? Time travel, you didn't get points? Time travel, but uh oh the Kubo is using it for his advantage, being just saying that every time you where unable to accept the consecuences of your decisions you just made things worse. On top of that during every sprite of Rindo he is holding his phone, his "phones" like neku just that his time it represents a mentality of running away from the world via internet friends like Shoka was, he could met Shoka before the game but he didn't he was afraid of changing the status quo, instead he just uses her during half of the game to ask for help with decisions like joining Kanon team and so, instead of taking his own decisions. In the final chapter, his way of thinking ended up getting everyone killed even trying to redo it once it didn't help, however he is saved he could accept the consecuences and keep moving foward even if a big price, this time without the phone to hide, and no friends by his side. However he is given an opportunity, and having to make a decision at last without anybody by his side to push it out of his way he ends up doing it ending in the ending of the game. Or well at least this is my interpretation of the character, not at the level of neku but is actually a good idea if not that great done in the end
I definitely agree about the Turf Wars and the Time Reversal bits slowing it down. For anybody who hasn't done them yet, I'd genuinely recommend just speeding through the Turf Wars on the actual playthrough and then just coming back to do them in the post game when you can set up a combo of pins to amass a lot of Team Grooves fast. Bird in Hand is an absolute banger, but by the end of the game it got beat out by Shibuya Survivor for me. Top Three songs in the game would be Shibuya Survivor, Bird and Divide, easily. I really resonated with the story, so we disagree a bit there, though Nagi being the best teammate is straight facts, no argument there. I disliked the more sluggish bits particularly because I wanted to get back to the story. There were some bits that could've been more fleshed out, but overall I really liked it. One complaint I'd have is that there aren't any common female human enemy types. It would've been some nice variety over the different groups of recolored human guys you fight (and also would make sense with the plot. The fact there are no girls is wack).
Oh! Pel, If you have problems with your Switch crashing, What you need to do is completely turn off your Switch. Jirard had the same problem with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. It kept crashing because he kept putting his Switch in Rest Mode. But once he figured out that it was that, the crashes stopped happening.
You should have a mini video of what you’re looking forward to and what you wish there was in the latest Nintendo direct. It was finally a good one lol
I'm just interested to see how this connects to the first game. I'll look out for it come Christmas tho. Also thanks for the warning with the Switch version I'll go for PS4
I own TWEWY (ds) version, i bought Neo TWEWY for both continuation and a new game. Best girl is Shoka and Pelvic Gaming, best boi is Susukishi and Neku.
I always have this thought that TWEWY will have a hard time for its sequel and this review kinda confirms that for me. Everything about the first game is meticulously crafted, picked and chose to tell a story about Neku and his lesson in underside of Shibuya. It is bound to not do well because the same world cannot be easily used for other characters and still resonate so well with their development on the same level.
Tbh I'm still waiting on a really breath taking new jrpg story myself...I'm putting my hopes on tales of arise and shin megami tensei v. This is gonna sound different but while not a mediocre sequel I thought persona 4 had better story/characters than 5. Persona 5 kinda dragged at times for me but I love the game tho
Squeenix addressed why they didn't call it TWEWY 2, they didn't want new players to feel alienated. Makes sense considering og TWEWY came out in 2007 😅
I never got into the series. Never owned a DS and I remember getting the KH vibes from it. Still willing to give a shot at the first one, cuz one thing I feel from the second one, it seems cluttered? Ya know? All I know is that I can't unsee Rindo having a beard, lol! Yeah, a real fear is not really feeling the characters. Whenever that happens I focus of something else I like (combat, music, etc). Some games that made me feel like that were FFVIII and X for example. PS: shoutouts to the experienced jrpg characters, we're them now, lol!
I can't say I enjoyed the demo when I played it, it felt like something that'd get tiring fast, and it doesn't seem to get much better from what I've seen or read. Maybe if the game goes on a super cheap sale on PC I'll consider it (given the port isn't a mess), but right now, I'm not too interested to play anymore of it.
I don't know much about these games, but I'd always pronounced TWEWY as TWOO-wee in my head, for some reason. I haven't exactly been hip to JRPGs since probably Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, so I'm probably wrong on that, but TWEE-wee has me thinking about that old David Byrne song, Now I'm Your Mom. That's definitely not a complaint.
This game has a contemporary music soundtrack, takes place in the real word with real landmarks, has technology heavily incorporated into the plot, the main character is obsessed with a mobile game Inspired by pokemon, go and the characters all wear Shibuya streetwear...and people were worried about memes and slang dating this game. 🤨 While yes, localization, taking liberties is an issue. But you gotta realize somethese two games will be a bigger time capsule to Japanese audiences than Westerners. In the same way, you can tell final fantasy fifteen's development hell because Noctics is clearly from 2006.
My mediocre experience with good (or at the very least decent) games would have to be the games made by Tokyo RPG Factory,: I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and Oninaki. They're not bad games but my experience with each left me wanting more. They're what I call hollow games, interesting but don't offer as much.
I think that Rindo's replay, explained towards the end is much more like a: you are not above consequences kinda deal, which further increases the stakrs of the decisions he struggles to make, which makes it harder for him to bother himself with making such.
Thanks for this, your thoughts at the end seem to validate my suspicions. I loved the original and 100% completed it but something about this game seemed … underwhelming? The art style transitioned very well to 3D but beyond that nothing was making me want to play it lol. Guess I’ll pass
9:29 I agree with literally everything you said from here on (only thing is I EVEN found the OG's combat more fun) TWEWY is my favorite game of all time and I have to agree that Neo is very underwhelming, I'm just gonna be honest the trailers made Neo seem like it was gonna have a great story and the story ended up being well really...bad imo
Wow. We obviously played different games. I actually loved it. Chef’s kiss of a sequel. I never had any crashes, either. The game is superior on Switch so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
It was definitely the time traveling that got on my nerves and Beat talking in more AAVE than usual lmao. I especially hated that time we had to time travel to avoid getting jumped by the River Society gang, as if we couldn’t handle them right then and there. Also I thought Rindo’s lesson was that he needed to learn how to depend on himself and stop looking for others to help him win or make the best decisions.
I think the problem with the Deep River Society ambush needing Rewind was that you were not only out numbered immensely, but also had to deal with a swarm of fake gold pigs. Maybe from a gameplay point you could win, but story wise you're essentially a team of 3 fighting 2 armies at once. Sho COULD turn the advantage, but he was intentionally not doing anything to force Rindo to rewind.
TWEWY is my favorite DS game, and one of my favorite RPGs ever! Does this new one do anything? Honestly, eh. It doesn't hold a candle to the first tbh, but I don't think it needs to. However, I will say this sequel is good enough, and that's all I have to say.
I'm interested in playing both of these for the alleged Kingdom Hearts tie in but I'll temper expectations. As for me? I found Mario & Luigi Partners in Time very underwhelming but kinda ok? Especially since it's in a series and I like all the others a lot in the series (haven't played Paper Jam though I heard it's not officially part of the series?)
I really enjoyed the original back when I first played it and I don't know if it's just me getting older or what, but I purposely chose to skip this one. I haven't played the first one since then only because I'm afraid that I wouldn't have the patience to deal with the mechanics etc. When I saw this game I was like "ugh do I really wanna deal with all the mechanics of fashion and pins?" so then I skipped it lol, great review though doesn't sound like it's a bad game overall.
I felt the same way you did about this one. I've been obsessed with the first since it came out, but this one couldn't hold my attention. I feel like the character designs were a bit more bland, and the story was less punchy than in the original. Also, they had the opportunity to let your clothing choices actually change the character's models and they just didn't do it, lol.
Loved TWEWY but I don’t think it’s possible to recapture everything it did right. I had similar feelings about Eastward which launched recently; great music, art style was amazing, but I can’t recommend it to anyone who wants a good story and the gameplay doesn’t make up for it.
I'm about 15 hours in and you hit all of these on the head --- Rindo is a serious disappointment as a protag, especially compared to the instantly interesting Neku/Shiki. One of the characters constant 'blackccent' quickly started to grate on me, too. Still, overall it's an enjoyable experience and the battle system is definitely a highlight.
Like u said classic case of a sequel just not living up. I enjoyed the hell out of the damn and i will play it for all the spoilers that show up later half of the game. But ti answer ur question persona 5 royale is doing all that for me right now. Not as good as previous ones on certain aspects experience is mediocre in story and the bounus semester was just bot needed at all
A great JRPG but had a mediocre experience with it? Probably Baten Kaitos Origins with me. I liked a lot about it but I was way more into the story of BK then I was with this prequel. It was a good story, but it just didn’t compare to BK.
I'm not big on open world games, but some get enough love that I decide I'll try one again. Fallout 3, skyrim, gta. I get that millions of people love these games but as I run through the open world I just lose interest. Breath of the wild is the most recent failed attempt by me.
To me the biggest disappointed was playing scarlet nexus, it's literally perfect, except for the characters are boring especially the stupid guy protagonist, i hated him. Also the way the story progression was a bit weird.
Hahah I had the opposite opinion about this game. (I agree is meh but for different reasons) I hated the combat. It's next to impossible to play defense cuz you aren't in full control of all your characters just one at a time. In boss fights this is so frustrating. Also all the pins felt "samey" like I get they have different elements but all the attacks just felt the same. That was such a bummer cuz the first game I love the combat cuz it felt like you could do anything. The pins could make you an electric God or like mewtwo or whatever power you wanted. This game just felt like they were going through the motions The story I actually really liked. It was the one thing that kept me going. I'm not going to say any spoilers but seeing old characters again was great and seeing how they changed really was the highlight of this game. Nagi was my least favorite character because while she says she's a college girl she acts like a 7 year old and she's just the worst. Everyone else I liked.
xenogears was my mediocre experience. i played xenosaga first and that story and characters were so polished and tight that i was expecting another perfect experience especially after all the hype and it was a great game and way ahead of its time but not as good, imo, as xenosaga
Just finished the game, and yes, those rewinds were rough. Not only repetitive, but way to guided and scripted too, where there was no room for improvisation. It also felt "budgety" for me, it if makes sense :(
Oh man, all I gotta say is time travel. This game forces you to redo so many sections. Good game design is allowing your choices to mold your experience. But this game forces you to see every bad option, using time travel, until your characters realize the right choice was there all along. It gets old fast and feels like a really lame way to pad out a game. It doubled if not tripled the length. When you reverse time, they even force you to redo most of the dialogue. Without giving spoiler specifics, this trend continues to the very end. You are always redoing entire days.
The original World Ends with You is probably the best game I can't stand playing. The hero starts off as the kind of selfish asshole who seems way too common, these days. And the game forces you to suffer when he can't figure out obvious clues. There's better ways to torture myself. No judgement on those who played it, and enjoyed his character growth, or those who learned to be better people from that story. Or even if you just enjoyed the gameplay. I'm happy you got more out of it than I could.
Appreciate cha, and the next review will be on NieR Replicant (finally!). And the next TOP 5 video will be on the best JRPG openings voted on by my patrons! If you'd like to vote on what video games/TOP 5 videos I do next be sure to join the Patreon at the dollar tier! My whole experience with it was fine except for the Rewind moments.
thank you i feel the exact same way the game is good but the plot is underwhelming and hate the turf mission
*SPOILERS IN-BOUND*
Your comment makes it sound like Rindo could just keep time traveling to fix things, but the story establishes with no ambiguity whatsoever than Rindo can't just keep doing that to undo the choices he makes.
Thank you for making an honest review.
This was a really solid review. I appreciate your thoughts on this one. I too feel like Nagai really was written better than the others.
Thank you. I was scared people were gonna be mad cause I'm not in love with it. It's odd I heard nothing but praises for a while and while I was playing I'm like huh? ... Are we playing the same game or are we just ignoring the terrible pacing?
This is actually fair… like Nagi was on thin fucking Ice when I met her.
But as time went on, she basically became my favorite after Sho and Shoka.
That's because he's from the same tribe as Jesus Christ. Not even kidding.
I really appreciated the battle system in Neo over TWEWY and the music was fire
Hello and thank you so much!!
I like how you said you were stood off to Fret right before mentioning you related the most to Nagi.
This was actually my first twewy game and tbh i really loved it
The style, presentation, and gameplay here are so damn good that I'm having just as much fun working on the 100% as I did with the OG, but honestly I'm glad I'm not the onlyone that felt underwhelmed by the plot.
Like it seemed like they were gearing up to say something about escapism and losing yourself in fiction towards the end there but did nothing with it.
i know i love the combat and the style but the plot is aggggggg
Girl, you are so wonderful! Never stop being you.
the original TWEWY is one of my favorite games, and I really love NEO, it's been total joy for me!
It's fun if you enjoy the combat, but the story left a lot to be desired. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Thanks this helps SO much. And the vibes I got from the demo
You're welcome! Thank you for watching. ^w^
Just finished the game! Finally can watch this
Thanks for coming back!
I appreciate your video lady of pelvic
Thank you so much for your review, that’s very useful and enjoyable! Hi from France!
They can drag on a bit
Character development doesn’t hit as strongly as the first game because you have to go a bit further to read between the lines.
That being said, it is a lot more satisfying once you read the Secret Reports and look at the lyrics of the music, ‘specially for Rindo
While there is not as much inspiration as the first game, it did kinda push me to make an important decision for my own circumstances instead of being on the fence about it
Now while this game doesn’t leave as strong of an impression on me, it’s still plenty worth it as a newcomer or a fan of the original
I...did mention eating...
@@PelvicGaming oh
Odd, I play the switch version and it never crashed on me so far
That aside, the gameplay, visuals, and music are all awesome so there's that
Thanks for the review
Did you do a Drakengard 3 review? I think you did, if not it's worth checking out.
I did. ruclips.net/video/GwUXbj6GUtA/видео.html
Hope you enjoyed my Neo: The World Ends with You review.
Best OST I've ever heard.
People who've played Final Mix instead of DS may disagree.
It's ironic that Lady Pelvic would connect so strongly to Nagi, given that she has incredible communication skills.
I’d give that honor to either Donkey Kong Country 2, Hotline Miami or Chrono Trigger.
Best OST? Bu-But... NieR/Sonic/Ys?
I was happy to get a good conclusion to characters I loved
11:23 not a game to what I can remember but a movie I would say citizen kane
Do u do manga to
Kinda sad people didn't like it that much in general.
Now to spoilers of neo and og
The story is... Something like the plot is good half of the cast is interesting and charismatic. But as said I felt most of it rushed like why you didn't do a mini arc or something for Minamimoto why Fret is the only secondary with real scenes, it would be easy to give an arc to Nagi by giving her problems to enter other people minds being a metaphor of understanding other people better and only being able to do it without problems by the last week we she needs to get past thar or smth like that it wouldt be that hard to give her an arc, and beat is there for surprise and lore dump of the first game only, like this was the perfect time to give him something more like thinking a little before acting because he could die again and there are people waiting for him idk
And there are more cases like tsugumi which is explained in a 3 min scene and that's all she has even if the game was hyped because of her.
Really some more scenes could really helped the plot, while the original wasn't a masterpiece at least by Desing by having 1 partner it gave time for everyone which makes it better overall, by neo having 6 party members it falls flat in some ways, not a bad story, but I can tell why someone would say it is bland and perfectly accept it
Also I think you mis in te the idea of Rindo (is not like the game does a good explanation of it in any way is really subtle outside of hehe time travel bad kiddo) at the start of the game Rindo is literally unable to speak his opinion in fear of losing something like his friends for it, not that he is someone totally different behind it but time and time again he prefers others taking his responsability in things by taking decisions (another way or giving his mind in this context).
I gotta ask, why is your channel called “Pelvic” gaming?
You should have a mini video of what you’re looking forward to and what you wish there was in the latest Nintendo direct. It was finally a good one lol
I'm just interested to see how this connects to the first game. I'll look out for it come Christmas tho. Also thanks for the warning with the Switch version I'll go for PS4
looking forward to replicant. bummer to hear about the laptop - towtansua
I own TWEWY (ds) version, i bought Neo TWEWY for both continuation and a new game. Best girl is Shoka and Pelvic Gaming, best boi is Susukishi and Neku.
The experience of being underwhelmed by the sequel to a game you loved is my experience with bravely default 2
Oooo I feel that
I thought bravely second was the sequel
It would be funny if they named the game "The world ends with you, too" ;-)
I always have this thought that TWEWY will have a hard time for its sequel and this review kinda confirms that for me.
Makes sense considering og TWEWY came out in 2007 😅
This sounds like how I felt about bravely default 2. Great combat, but I don't care about the story
I agree Those turf wars were something........😂
I found you because i was looking for rouge galaxy gameplay and you popped up
This game has a contemporary music soundtrack, takes place in the real word with real landmarks, has technology heavily incorporated into the plot, the main character is obsessed with a mobile game Inspired by pokemon, go and the characters all wear Shibuya streetwear...and people were worried about memes and slang dating this game. 🤨
While yes, localization, taking liberties is an issue.
That is actually my fear with those games.
The games not bad its just like...ehhhhhhh :/
Wow. We obviously played different games. I actually loved it. Chef’s kiss of a sequel. I never had any crashes, either. The game is superior on Switch so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
I wish I didnt have crashes. Well I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Well I did play the ps4 Demo version, I only enjoyed it because I played the original on the DS🤷🏾♂️…I just brought the full version from the PSN sale
I think my biggest regret for this game or the anime is that Ali didn't do the opening credits
I never got into Astral Chain, and I tried. I like the designs, and the combat, but it never clicked with me.
OH MY GOD THAT MAKEUP!!!!
The first games music just went over and over and over. I had to turn it off. How is it in this one?
You nailed it! Wow I'm impressed and I started wild arms 3 because of your last review. Can you clone yourself and give her my number
Forty-three here. “Hello, fellow kids!” 😂
Yeah Give Me All Your Love is a bop from the original TEWEY
Review Tales of Arise!!!
Hair on fleek haha
(I agree is meh but for different reasons)
I hated the combat. This game just felt like they were going through the motions
The story I actually really liked.
Week 3 is where everything comes together. But see, it should have been that good on week 1.
Oh god, pronouncing the abbreviation TWEWY physically hurts me.
